10 Must Haves for Spring and Summer 2011

I’m right on schedule because today is officially the second day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. The list is shorter than it was last year because we’re keeping things strong and simple this season.

The list cuts across all body types, fashion personas and age groups. It’s a question of finding the right items, at the right prices, AND wearing them in flattering and appropriate ways so that they feel like lovely YOU. (I’m afraid that I can’t take the devil out of the details). Try to keep an open mind and don’t flat out say “no” to a look until you’ve at least given it a fair chance. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

  1. Flared Jeans: I’m making this a must! Flared jeans also means bootcuts, so no need to worry about bell bottoms, trouser cuts and wide legs if they aren’t your cup of tea. This is a season of contrasts. Flared legs, skinnies and straight legs are all on-trend.
  2. Soft blouses: It’s a blouse season, so add at least one soft blouse to your top collection as soon as possible. Think pussy bows, smocking, bat wings, empire cuts, embroidery, bell sleeves and neck ties in soft fabrications like rayon and cotton blends. Stock up if you’re a blousy gal.
  3. Fit and Flare Frock: Pencil skirts and figure hugging sheath dresses dominated the fashion world for a couple of seasons. Now add a bit of volume to your lower half and sport a flared dress.
  4. A Striped Item: There has got to be a stripe that tickles your fancy. Multi-coloured, low contrasting, high contrasting, narrow width, broad width, variegated, anything at all. Striped tees and knit tops are an easy solution, but there are also striped jackets, blouses, trousers, shorts, shoes, belts, headbands, hats and handbags.
  5. A new look pair of trousers: Think flared slacks, tapered and pleated styles, short shorts, harem pants, skinny cargos, cropped cargos and palazzos. I dare you.
  6. White stuff: Nothing says Spring and Summer quite like the colour white. Lighten up with white tops, bottoms, jackets, trench coats or dresses. Add in white accessories and footwear. Think handbags, shoes, watches, belts and sunglasses. Optical white is not your only choice if it doesn’t work for your complexion. Choose off-white, bone-white, or cream to substitute optical white.
  7. Sport the new colours: Citron yellow, tomato red, lavender purple, coral, emerald, cobalt, and turquoise are where it’s at with colours. Wear them together for a fresh colourblocked effect. If you’re colour shy, sport the hue through an accessory or shoe instead of a clothing item.
  8. Wedged Sandals: Even I can manage this one with my fussy feet. Cork wedges are casual, whereas self-fabric wedges are dressier. The heel can be either high or low.
  9. Low heels: Kitten heels are retro and fab with the slightly longer hemlines (both straight and flared) that are slowly but surely becoming more popular.
  10. Long pendant necklaces: It’s easy and inexpensive to add this one to your Spring and Summer style. Urban Outffters has a fabulous selection of quirky long pendant necklaces this season, which you can wear all through the year.

For the more adventurous and fashion forward there are: Midi skirts, pleated skirts, crop tops, floppy hats, crochet cardigans, mini crossbody bags, sharp shouldered jackets, gilets, animal prints (preferably cat prints), conversational prints, cut away backs, clogs, sling backs, small silk scarves, chain handle bags, tie-dye, fringe and flat oxfords.

I wouldn’t be doing my job if I left out strong seasonal trends like soul-sucking beige, casual maxi dresses, casual maxi skirts, and leg shortening cropped capri pants. But I’m hesitant to encourage these looks because in my book, they are very hard to wear well no matter what your body type or skin tone.

How does the list look ladies? What’s on your shopping list as the weather warms up?

10 Must Haves for Spring and Summer 2011

wow, I have almost everything on the list…………….

Thanks for the heads up Angie.
I would like to try the soft blouses, that would be a real change for me, and those new season colours are calling to me!

Perfect timing!

I’ve got bootleg jeans, blouses, stripes, wedge sandals and long necklaces on my radar. I just picked up a pair of pants and shoes yesterday, and I am heading back for that denim dress. I guess I am right in line, but will have to see what finds me.

Thanks for the list Angie!
I had my spring shopping spree yesterday, and I felt so ready and informed thanks to you and the ladies on this board. It was the best shopping experience I have had in a long, long time. And I am very proud to say that many of my purcahses are on this list! Now if the weather would just catch up with the calendar so that I can wear my new spring fashions.

First, I LOVE these lists. Now on to my tallies.

1.Flared Jeans: Easy one for me, I always own at least one or two bootcuts and just picked up a pair of Hudson’s with a 24″ leg opening. Check.

2.Soft blouses: I hope to add at least one or two blouses this season. My problem is finding one’s that are not dry clean only and are not itchy. Want to check.

3.Fit and Flare Frock: Does my new full Ann Taylor skirt count? Then check.

4.A Striped Item: I need to stay away from stripes, I already own far too many striped tops. Double check.

5.A new look pair of trousers: I never find trousers easy to fit, I’ll stick with my new full skirt. :)

6.White stuff: I always love white for spring and summer. I have been saving a Fossil bag I snagged for a song end of last season for this year. Check.

7.Sport the new colours: The only color I can see working on me is turquoise, and I have a turquoise dress from last season, so one more checked off.

8.Wedged Sandals: Another item I always love for spring and summer, I have at least 3 or 4 wedge sandals. Check.

9.Low heels: I favor a 2 1/2 to 3 inch heel as my highest heels anyway, and if these can count as low heels (compared to the 4 and 5 inch I keep seeing in stores) then another check.

10.Long pendant necklaces: I really wanted to add one of these, and recently picked up a butterfly one from Fossil, swoon! And check!

Out of the fashion forward items: I already own flat oxfords, an animal print top and a crochet cardigan, so those are checks. The only item I would still add is a pair of clogs if I can find one that my feet like. I have yet to see these in stores though.

Thanks, Angie. These are some of favorite posts, and I feel like I’m off to a good start. However, finding wedge sandals that aren’t sky-high heels is proving to be quite a challenge. Is anyone else having luck with this?

Thanks for the inspiration and nudge. I’ve been working on my shopping list, but dragging my feet on trying on all my spring/summer clothes. I was at Target yesterday and they had several cute striped tops and dresses. Will look more closely next time.

Wow, I have almost all of these (except for the white and the trousers… not sure I will go for either of those).
I’m counting platform wedges as wedge sandals… far more comfy in my book.

FAB list, Angie! And you are even more perfectly timed than you think; today is the first full day of spring, so in my kids’ minds, today is really the first day of spring (we’re conveniently ignoring the snow forecast for today in our area).

I have many things from your list, but am still looking for white jeans (wouldn’t mind a white or cream coat either), a fit and flare dress that’s just right for me, and would love a kitten-heeled sling back. I haven’t completely given up but have just not had luck finding trousers that fit me well, let alone trousers in fresh shapes. (Still need to try out your recommended BR Sloans; I do love the look of them.) Not on your list but a big hole for me are some Bermuda shorts for summer and a dress to wear to and from the pool with the kids. Oh, and I have my eye on quite a few cream or white bags.

I have recently added a pair of nude wedge sandals, bootcut jeans, the Talbots striped top in low-contrast brown, and am waiting for a blousy top on order that’s a stretch from my comfort zone but I’m excited to try out.

I’ll keep the saturated color to my turquoise clutch. :)

Soul sucking beige… LOL!!!!!!!!!

I thought I was the only one that felt like that!

I have most of the recommended list with the exception of the striped item but I am getting a Breton T so I should be good there too!

LOVE it… I already have most of the items listed, woohoo! I’m super excited to wear my midi skirts all season. Next on my list is a pair of white pants.

And I just got rid of all my fit and flare skirts and wide legged pants!! But I don’t regret it, those are not the most flattering looks for me.

Thanks for posting this – it really consolidates and demystifies the spring trends!

Most of you are off to a great Spring start! Remember that you can look beyond the list to the paragraph below it too. I have everything on the list, but am anxious to find midi skirts, red bottoms, flared dresses, a jumpsuit, more blouses and perhaps a gillet.

Lisa, your new flared skirt counts! I guess its all relative, but a low heel to me is 1.5 to 2 inches. 3 inch heels are high :) . Also, you look exceptional in the new shades of lavender and dirty coral. Thanks for being so thorough with your comment here today.

Oooh, I have been looking forward to this post! And I already own a few things.

1. Flared Jeans: I haven’t seen them in stores here in Germany yet and I also own enought jeans, so I will pass or wait until later.
2. Soft Blouses: I’m totally not a blouse girl, but as I pledged to try something new this spring, I’ll try to find a nice blouse.
3. Fit and Flared Frock: I currently only own one dress, but plan to stock up. So this is definitely on my shopping list.
4. A striped item: I have a Breton Shirt, a cardi with variegated stripes and just found a great striped sweatblazer! Check!
5. A new look pair of trousers: I’m on the lookout for cigarette pants and wide leg trousers. I have a pair that I’d like to dye, but am not sure this will work.
6. White stuff: Have a white skirt and consider buying white jeans, though it’s really stupid with two small kids. Check.
7. Sport the new colours: You bet! Check.
8. Wedged Sandals: I have a pair in blue/purple that are super comfy. Would like to find another pair. Check.
9. Low-heeled shoes: I only wear flat or low-heeled shoes, so: Check.
10. Long pendant-necklace: Angie, how long is long? I have several pendants so might just need a longer necklace for them.

From the fashion forward section I might consider animal print (I’d like a bag or a pair of flats), clogs and a maxi dress. I saw a beautiful one with blocks of colour that I want to try. We’ll see how it turns out.

OK. I’m going back to TJ Maxx for the $49 Calvin Klein striped blazer I tried on yesterday and left without buying.

Wow, great list! I have everything except the fit and flare frock, and I do have a couple of flared skirts so I think I am semi-okay in that department, too!

And I need to get my fab wide-leg bright blue pants from the swap to the tailors so I can bust ‘em out!

I’ve been paying close attention to you Angie, so I have a great head start on this list. I opted for bootcuts and have lots of tomato red accents I’ve been collecting. I have my new white and black bag, a few striped tops and new white trench. I’m waiting for the weather to warm up a little so I can put this stuff in action. I have a few sleeveless soft flowy blouses, but have been looking for some with sleeves or 3/4 sleeves that fit the bill and haven’t found what I’m looking for yet. Also need some longer pendant necklaces, that would be fun!

Thanks to you for keeping us on our toes so that we are well prepared for the season. I’m glad I don’t have to wonder what I would do without you!

Thanks so much for this Angie! This will help to keep me focused as I finish my spring shopping. Can’t wait to find a great pair of white pants!

Wide leg pants, wedge sandals, soft blouse, fit and flare frock (floral, no less!), aqua and coral – check and love. I can’t wait to see more soft blouse options in the stores, I’d love to own more.

A white watch is at the top of my list for Spring.

I’m choosing a statement necklace over a medallion, and I’m holding off on the stripes for now…I might consider something low contrast and wriggly if it popped into view.

And I am going to make a blowsy floral tea-length skirt to wear with my denim shirt.

Thx for the great list, Angie!

I feel so uninformed, but what is a gillet? I tried googling and online dictionaries and am still lost…

I also searched You Look Fab and only found today’s post. I am dying of curiosity :)

I love these lists too! And I’m excited to see that I already have several things on the list, or they are on the way to me. And others are on my “to buy soon” list.

1) flares: I’m good there… have dark boot cuts in 2 lengths, white ones for low heels, and black ones on the way (perfect boot find on Ebay!)

2) blouses: one on the way, will keep an eye out for more

3) frock: would love to add dresses to my closet, so this sounds good to me

4) striped item: have black and white striped tee

5) new look trousers: not sure on this one… I think I’ve spent as much on pants this year that the budget will allow

6) white stuff: I’m there! have white bootcuts, a few white tops, white cardi, and have a white jacket I may or may not keep on the way

7) colors: I could do several of those, but my favorites are turquoise and red

8) wedge sandals: I want these in turquoise… kill two birds with one stone ;)

9) low heeled shoes: if sandals count, I’m good for now

10) long pendant necklace: I’ve got a turquoise pendant that just needs a long chain

Thanks for the list, Angie! I think I’m doing pretty well so far. Just came back from Nordstrom-triple points with:

A fit and flare dress, kind of retro…can’t wait to wear.
A bright coral cardigan. I’m going to try it with a turquoise cami…we’ll see.
A softer coral cardigan. (I’m always cold.)
A Tory Burch satchel in Poppy and…
lots of bras…not on the list, but oh, so necessary.

I’ve got super cute white jeans from J.Crew, but I’m still searching for the flares. Oh, and I’ll take you on with the pants challenge, Angie. I really need more pants, and although they’re not that hard for me to fit, they’re still kind of hard to find. I have found with the slower economy that Denver buyers have become more conservative!

I’m impressed with your lists, ladies!

PregnantMom, long pendant necklaces are long like this:

http://youlookfab.com/2011/01/.....medallion/

Amy, my fault. I misspelt gilet, which is a sleeveless jacket.

I love these lists! Thank you Angie! When I started following YLF I had nothing on the list! (I kept looking for sweatpants, but they never showed up! lol) Now I have some of the things on the list and I’m feeling so much more current and relevant. Somehow the clothes I am wearing are adding to my confidence in other areas of my life and I am feeling so grateful to Angie, YLF, and the wonderful YLF ladies! Thank you!

Terrific list!

I love me a list! Such a fun post, Angie. I feel like I’m in pretty good shape for spring. I would like to add a few blouses–that’s the only area I really see lacking. As the weather warms, I’m less inclined to layer and thus would like to find some nice blouses that work on their own. I have several Sweetpea tops that I wear in spring but nothing really blouse-y. I hope to find these elusive tops in some of the new spring colors! I’m considering a pair of new look pants as well–perhaps the loose Bermudas will suffice here.

Thanks for the fabulous list. It helps me to see that I have a lot of spring things already in my closet!

Great post, Angie! Wedged sandals are at the top of my list.

Love these lists and I feel like I’ve got a head start in most areas.
1.Flared Jeans: I’ve got some bootcuts that i haven’t worn much for awhile.

2.Soft blouses: I’ve picked up some soft sleeveless tops and have some others. I’d like to add bow blouses.

3.Fit and Flare Frock: I have two, a CK frock with fitted top and gored skirt and a black cotton shirtwaist with fuller skirt. Anything with too much volume seems to make my legs look like matchsticks though.

4.A Striped Item: I’ve got a 3/4 sleeve tee and the Bobeau striped tank w/bow brom the YLF store. I’d like to add a black or navy/grey lower contrast stripe.

5.A new look pair of trousers: Nothing in this area appeals to me yet, and trousers are hard to fit on my flat bottom. I don’t really want to go back to wearing tapered and pleated pants again. Can an over-60 style skinny cargos in a way that looks fab?

6.White stuff: I’ll stick to off-white and have mother-of-pearl specs. White scarves lighten up my winter coats for cold spring days.

7.Sport the new colours: I like all the colors you mentioned and want to stock up on more turquoise, coral and tomato red.

8.Wedged Sandals: I have these from last year, but wouldn’t mind adding some with cork heels.

9.Low heels: I’ve been stocking up on these and now have several pair. Most are patent, so I’d like to get some that are not shiney.

10.Long pendant necklaces: I want to add more but want just the right pendants in gold and silver. I’ve got several stone pendants.

I’m feeling pretty good this year! I probably have more than half of this list. let’s see…

Flared Jeans: check!
Soft blouses: I have a couple long sleeve, need to find some sleeveless once the weather cooperates
Fit and Flare Frock: does my KK handkerchief hem dress count?
A Striped Item: check!
A new look pair of trousers: hmm, I really don’t wear any pants other than jeans. perhaps I’ll think about trying something new.
White stuff: check!
Sport the new colours: can’t wait to find some of these colors
Wedged Sandals: 2 pair! woo hoo.. extra credit!
Low heels: I have kitten heel resistance. another area I need to open my mind to.
Long pendant necklaces: have a couple… am on the lookout for a turquoise one

and from the fashion forward list… I’ve got an animal print scarf and flat oxfords. who knew I was such a fashion forward gal?!

I always love these lists.. it helps me to focus on moving forward in my fashion choices rather than sticking with what is familiar and comfortable (just to realize into the season that I am a year behind!)

Angie, thanks for clarifying the necklace-length. I think my pendants are too small for this length. I wore necklaces like that when I was a teen (and flat-chested). Not sure that it will not draw intention to the widest part of my body. Will have to try.

Thanks for the rundown, Angie! There are some good ideas in there. I could really use a blouse or two. I’m good to go with the flared jeans, striped item (fab new gray stripe mod dress) , flared dress and pendant necklaces. I would love to find a way to wear a tea length skirt — I posted a separate question about that. And I would also like to find a way to wear a white top. I never like how it looks against my face, whether it’s bright white, cream or off-white.

And I’ll stay away from floppy hats, because short women wearing large brims give the impression that the hat is walking around on its own!

I’m also a lover of lists- so glad to see this, Angie, as I can regain some focus on where to put my pennies. Winter has left my wardrobe a bit…dreary.

Have a terrific pair of Red Engine flare jeans. Want a pair of white bootcuts for summer. Frocks and blouses- need!

Stripes- I go back and forth between wanting to add even more to my stripe collection and vowing no more. Wait- I don’t have a sleeveless one … yay, more stripes it is!

Would like more low heels and wedges, and want to add color with accessories. I have a few pendants- but so far, nothing fab. I’m on the hunt for this because I love the look. The Urban Outfitter pendants seem a bit young- any other recommendations for the over 50 crowd?

1. Flared Jeans: I have a pair of long and leans and 2 pairs of trouser jeans.

2. Soft Blouses: I have bought a couple but would like a couple more.

3. A Fit and Flare Frock: Looking hard for this.

4. A Striped Item: 2 striped tees for the Chanel look.

5. A New Look Pair of Trouser: Need to check into this. Would like something on the
casual side.

6. White Stuff: I have white tops a white jacket and white pants. Would love to find
white jeans. Must go to Gap.

7. Sport New Corals: Would love to find a turquoise dress or top. Love the coral
color. One cannot have too much red.

8. Wedged Sandals. Have!

9. Low Heels: Have several but would love to find a nude pair.

10. Long Pendant Necklaces: Have!

Team Jumpsuit checking in … Angie, I am right behind you in the Great Jumpsuit Hunt, part deux (since we started last fall, right?).

Second, I want to see if I can fit some midi-length skirts. If so, I will also be in for some kitten heels.

Should be a fun season!

Flared Jeans: I have a pair of Gap L&L’s that I’m about to throw in the wash and dryer to see if I can shink them a little. Plus a pair of great trouser jeans that are at the tailor because the hems need to be let out. Thank you, makers who put a generous hem allowance in your pants!

Soft blouses: I’d like to find one or two in some springy but not pastel solid colors.

Fit and Flare Frock: Yay!!! This silhouette works on me! I hate sheath dresses on me.

A Striped Item: Not easy to find any kind of horizontal stripe that I like on me, but I did pick up a cute blue and white stripey top a couple of months ago. I’ve been layering under a cardigan, but I’ll have to try it alone.

A new look pair of trousers: I may be shopping my closet for this. I’ve lost a couple of pounds and will probably be shedding a few more, so I’m holding off on pants shopping.

White stuff: I’m sporting my white band on my watch today! And a white glass pendant. :-)

Sport the new colours: I love all of those colors on me, except the yellow. Easy to do!

Wedged Sandals: I can totally get behind this look as well. Have some older pairs that still look fresh, but I’m keeping an eye out for a new pair too.

Low heels: Ditto to the wedged sandals comment.

Long pendant necklaces: I have plenty — I’m ahead of the trend! :-)

Great list, Angie and so timely as spring is finally coming where I live!
After reading through your list my first thought was: “No, I do not have any of these!” However when I began to think about it I realized I am doing better than I thought:
- flared jeans: this is my huge hole. My old bootcuts were all ill fitting so I got rid of them but did not find a replacement yet
- Soft blouses: I have a couple but would like to add more.
- Fit and flare frocks: I own 3 already – Check
- Stripes: I have a scarf and a tank – Check
- New trouser look: I have wide leg ones -do they count? I would try other ones as well but I don’t hold my breath on that as finding ANY pair that fits me is a huge challenge!
- White: I have a denim jacket, walk shorts and tunic-shirt. I would not mind to add white bootcut jeans, a skirt and a bag though.
- New colors: one of my summer dresses is tomato red and another is orange and I also have a new tomato red ponte dress and a citron rain coat. I would like to add some of these colors in blouses and button down shirts.
- Wedged sandals – this is a hole to fill.
- I own one pair of cream slingbacks with a kitten heel and would not mind to add more if they come along.
- Long pendant: I have my owl pendant. Check.
From the extra list I have some animal prints (pumps, tops, scarves, a belt) and a black gilet.
So while I still have some holes to fill i am not doing as bad as I thought!

Oooh, one of my favorite posts. Love the list, and love even more the fact that I’m doing really well against it so far.

I have:
* Flared Jeans – the Gap long and lean works great for me
* Soft blouses – got a couple already and wouldn’t mind getting more. I find these in consignment and thrift stores and love them tucked into pencil skirts, or layered underneath sweaters, cardis, jackets
* Fit and Flare Frock – got one at the Seattle YLF swap
* A new look pair of trousers – got skinny cargos last year; am also interested in flared slacks or a tapered style for dressier work wear
* White stuff – I love my white button downs; also thinking of getting an off-white bag and/or other white accessory, e.g. belt or bracelet/cuff
* New colors – never been color shy and already have turquoise, tomato red, cobalt items; will pick up other colors as the season progresses
* Wedged Sandals – love love my Indigo Clarks in beige
* Kitten heels – got a cheetah pair, though I’ll need to find an insole as they are just slightly roomy
* Long pendant necklaces – got one from Goodwill recently though I don’t love it; might cruise Urban Outfitters per your recommendation. Love the look.

The only item I don’t have from this list is the striped item. I’m not a huge fan of stripes, but could imagine a striped little jacket and am still bummed I passed on one at H&M a couple months ago.

From the “adventurous” list I have a crochet cardigan, animal print items (plenty ;-) ), small scarves. Would love to find a crop top if I can make it work on my body , and most of all a mini crossbody bag (delicious) – maybe in a bright color.

I like the midi skirt look though I’m not sure I’ll invest in it since I still worry about it looking frumpy compared to knee length skirts on me. Oh, and the cut-away back look is neat, could be fun for a party top.

Finally, I actually like some maxi dresses for the right occasion (summer nites…) and while I won’t be actively looking for one I would be curious to try one on just to see.

Thanks Angie, I can see a shopping list forming in my mind :-)

Great post! I’m surprised.. I have most items! When my SYC ends I must look for wedges (I have many years ago but none now, the are stylish and comfy)!

Got it all (even 1 striped item) but no fit and flair dress…how about a snug sleeveless turtleneck with a fitted skirt that flairs and comes below the knee…that I have:) would that work? a dress this style would be extremely hard to fit on me!
Such a fun list…now if the sun would just shine!!

Oooh today is Must Haves list day! I always love those!

1. I never stopped wearing my bootcut jeans and will continue to do so. I have a pair of COH Hutton jeans on my wish list and am also actively looking for wide-legged dressier trousers.
2. I love blouses (and button-downs) and want to add more of both to my wardrobe. Neck ties, pussy bows and bat wings all sound fab.
3. Definitely game for fit and flare frocks. Fingers crossed we’ll start to see some fab Summer frocks (decent length) in the stores here soon.
4. I always have my stripes covered. I bought two thin knit striped sweaters recently and would not say no to a fab striped blouse either.
5. Yes! I’m a bit bored with my pants silhouette, so I would welcome a pair of flared slacks, or tapered pants that fit perfectly.
6. White stuff: always! I bought two cream tops for Spring and everytime I see another one I go over to have a look and touch it. Can one have too many white and cream tops?? A stunning bone-white bag would be a bonus.
7. Longing sigh. I really need a lavender, an emerald, and a cobalt blue cardigan (sweaters and tops would be lovely too), but those colours are not around here yet. Fingers crossed we’ll start seeing them soon.
8. I’ve never said no to a fab wedge, so count me in. I have a pair of yellow slingback (oh that’s on the more adventurous list;-) wedge heel sandals and they look great with pants, skirts and dresses. And they’re amazingly comfortable!
9. Absolutely, one can never have enough fab low heeled shoes.
10. Searching for one as we speak.

I’m also all over the midi skirt look and sharp shouldered jackets. Do tell us more about small silk scarves, Angie, I need to know!-)

Sooo, I already have some of the must haves, but my wish and need list are quite long too. It’s a good thing I love to shop;-)

The only one really giving me pause is the new look trousers. I just still can’t imagine any of these on me but I will try to keep an open mind. Very pleased about the fit and flare dress rec. I bought one last year, but it doesn’t get much wear up until now. I needed this encouragement! Also quite pleased about gillets!

Flared Jeans: Check, though I won’t be purchasing any more.

Soft blouses: I have lots of blouses but not really any as described.

Fit and Flare Frock: Check.

A Striped Item: Must find one for summer. I have tons of winter stripes but no summer stripes.

A new look pair of trousers: Keeping an eye on those red shorts.

White stuff: I have a white s/s jacket and want a white dress but that’s it. I’m not much of a white person.

Sport the new colours: Once again I have lots of these colors but not as much in my summer wear.

Wedged Sandals: Just picked up two pairs earlier in the year.

Low heels: Check. Can’t really wear much else.

Long pendant necklaces: I have one but don’t wear it often. Good thing it was $5 from H&M.

As far as clothes go, I’d rather save my pennies for fall, so I’ll probably be getting my red shorts, a striped top, and floppy hat and call it a day. A white dress would be nice too but I have searched for yonks and can’t quite find the perfect one. Now that my budget is reigned in it will be harder than ever.

I’m another who has lots of items already that I can remix to keep up to date! This is great news.

I even have things that have me covered in more than one category, like my turquoise wedge sandals (2 categories) and my vintage white enamel fringed pendant (3 categories)!

Flared Jeans: Always. This busty, petite pin-up girl body is never going to be sentenced to “skinny” jeans. (Besides the fact that such pegged pants make my small feet look even smaller. Just not a good look.)

Soft blouses: Sounds like “boho” peasant styles look “in” again – which are also good choices for shapes like mine. And, I have a watercolor print one that I LOVE that also includes cobalt and lavender tones – another 2-category win.

Fit and Flare Frock: Love them. I also love well-cut sheaths that are hemmed to my proper petite length, but it’s great to be able to change it up.

A Striped Item: I love my purple marinière, but those are so ubiquitous right now that if I wanted to make a stripy point I would do it with funky accessories like tights or shoes. Most stripes are a no-go with this bod, unless they are work-related vertical or diagonal shirt striping.

A new look pair of trousers: Nay! These looks aren’t actually new anyway, but nutty pant cuts are so the wrong thing for a petite hourglass. Talk about hard to wear!

White stuff: Also a little difficult for my build, unless in blouses worn as underlayers, or in accessories. See “vintage white enameled pendant” (the chain is white too!). My other best strategy is to incorporate black and white items and looks. Enough white to be on-trend, enough black to make it look good on me.

Sport the new colors: I love citron and can wear any shade of blue/turquoise and most purples, but I will stay away from coral. It is nice that my turquoise wedge sandals will still look on-trend.

Wedged Sandals: See above! Plus, I will also wear nude pumps with cork-covered wedges for work. (Why are nude shoes not on the list? So de rigueur they are too obvious to mention, or *gasp* a bit passé?)

Low heels: Got my low-heeled slingbacks for one thing…they are sort of a light turquoise. Another 3-category item.

Long pendant necklaces: I have a few but would like more.

Other: I’ll keep wearing my clogs, and I’ve started to collect some silk scarves, which are a fun new thing for me. Capris: I have 2 pairs that believe it or not, I actually like on my 5’1″ frame.

(…what happened to maxi skirts that are sleek and chic and not beachy-70s-caftan-casual? The former I rock regularly, while the latter are a big nay.)

It’s fabulous to have a list that already makes so much sense for so many of us!

To the list I’d add a structured bag. I think the slouchy styles are FINALLY being supplanted by my favorite, the kind of bag that has relatively stiff sides and holds its shape. They also seem to be getting a bit smaller, which is going to be a more difficult adjustment for me, but my neck and shoulders will rejoice. :)

Oh Angie, I heart you. I think i am going through blogsmosis, because i have a lot from that list. And you are to blame for 1. striped coral and black and white full skirt , gray and black striped dress and fit and flare black and white polka dotted dress.:) And a white sundress.(LWD) So i hit colors fit-and-flare and stripes with the bottoms. I have white jeans ( from last Christmas actually), but no white accessories. Hmm, time to stock up. I have a pair of cork wedge sandals , or more like ( peep toe booties sling-backs) that were my mom’s in the 70′s. I still have no low heels, i have flats and 2 pair of high heels. I would definitely look for a nice gillet ( i have the goofy puffy one ) and red jeans. Or red wide leg trousers. but i have to find the right blouses, i just never see them in the stores. Did I tell you I love the list?

This is gonna be One Fun Season.

I double checking and think that I have about 80% of the list which is pretty good!
I was a little set back on slingbacks being back. I never noticed they were gone :(

1.Flared Jeans: Done.

2.Soft blouses: Will do.

3.Fit and Flare Frock: Done — though in winter-weight fabrics.

4. Striped Item: Hmm. Not usually a fan of horizontal stripes, but I do have a pinstriped jacket and a pinstriped shirt (both older) — do those count?

5.A new look pair of trousers: Done. I have skinny cargoes.

6.White stuff: I have several pairs of white jeans and one white handbag, so Done.

7.Sport the new colours: Done — I have new summer tees in many of these colors.

8.Wedged Sandals: Done.

9.Low heels: Done.

10.Long pendant necklaces: Doing.

Great list! I am feeling good about the state of my closet, though I would LOVE to find some perfect red pants! I also have a hankering for some striped trousers, like several people were showing at the fall shows.

Angie, I’d love to see a post on “soft blouses” with recommendations in various size ranges.

It’s good to know I already have 95% of this list already in my closet – you and your website have been pre-trend for years now, Angie! The only thing to look for now this season is more pretty blouses, but that’s always been a struggle.

YAY! I love these posts, Angie, and I love this list!

I have: flared jeans, white in several varieties, stripes, wedges, long pendants and strong colors.

I need: more soft blouses, a flared frock and low heels.

I’ll add in: soft silk scarves, a chain handled bag, and a sharp-shouldered jacket

:)

Thank you for the guidance Angie! If/When I ever stop SYCing, I can see that with your help I will be a much wiser and relaxed shopper! Since I haven’t yet set an end-date for SYC, I can see that I am going to have to get creative on some of the items on your list. Here’s how I stand so far:

1. Flared jeans – yes, I have several (one in summer weight denim) that I bought a couple of years ago – they will have to do, as when I do start shopping again, I am NOT going to spring for another pair of jeans for a looooooong time!

2. Soft blouses – one of my weakest categories. I might have to break SYC for a girly blouse!

3. Fit and Flare frock – I bought a vintage one last summer that I never wore – I’m going to get it out and see if it will work. Otherwise, I don’t have any!

4.Striped Item – yes, a white with black pull-over cotton v-neck sweater, a casual blue and white striped long slvd. top, and a green and white striped tank. Cream with skinny black striped walking shorts and white with skinny navy striped baggy cargoes (haven’t worn them in a few years – don’t know if I will this summer or not!)

5. New look pair of trousers – if I already have the skinny cargos and have worn them for 2 1/2 seasons, do they count as a new look? Also, same with the harem pants – I’ve worn them steadily since last fall, so does that count as a new look? What would you suggest that I try next in the way of pants????

6. White stuff – I am craving a white dress and a white skirt – I have neither. I do have several white blouses/shirts and a white watch – so I guess that I’m covered though!

7. New colors – I don’t have any, except for a citron green baggy tank tee that I bought several years ago from Nordies and absolutely LOVE! All of my friends thought that I was crazy when I started wearing it – now, they are looking at me with new respect. LOL Oh, and I also bought a pair (last fall) of bright turquoise sandals with 2 wide black ankle straps and citron green soles that I think will go with just about everything I own this summer! Can’t wait to get them out!

8. Wedged sandals – surely I have some of these – just not the ones that I want! :-)

9. Low heels – yes – many.

10. Long pendant necklaces – yes – lots and lots – I never got rid of them the last time they were popular!

Extras: yes – 2 pleated skirts, several cropped tops, what’s a gilet? a chicken innard?, animal print wedges, flats, cardigan, belt, fedora and purse, one floppy straw hat, several mini cross-body bags, one tie-die top that I can think of, also have a tie-die silk jumpsuit, one pair of high-heeled nude clogs, no conversational prints that I can think of, no cut-backs – my age is a factor there! and 4 pairs of flat oxfords.

Ok – I’m better off than I thought. I just need to come up with creative, fun ways to wear this stuff! I look forward to your ideas!

I’m definitely going to look for some flared frocks or skirts and a striped top.

So fab – thank you. I have everything except one that I’m not sure about: the new look trousers! Also I’m not a huge blouse person but do have one.

I am looking for some navy fabric espadrilles, a floral sundress and one of those wide-brimmed straw beach hats for my summer traveling plans. We are going to Mackinac Island and I cannot stop picturing myself wearing these things while having lunch in the Grand Hotel.

I also need a pair of navy trousers to wear to work, but that seems less exciting.

Oh, I feel so left out being in the Southern Hemisphere! But I do have some winter stripes, bootcut jeans and am planning to buy some red jeans too …

Yey, I think all of these will work well for me, this is a great shopping list. Thanks Angie!

Oh how I want a fit-and-flare dress, more woven blouses, an everyday wedge sandal (preferrably sling-back) and various white items (dress, better jeans, killer bag)! I own a striped item that I can only layer with at the moment, so I need a standalone piece for mild days. I’m not in love with any of my pants, so I wouldn’t say no to updating a pair of flares either. The colour palette sounds good and easy to manage (though I’ll probably stick to deeper reds), and I wouldn’t say no to the right pendant necklace (Iactually have one copper one that I love and a silver circle on a cord, but that’s it right now). I would embrace the right midi skirt in a moment if I found it, but it’s not an urgen priority. I’m also in for animal prints (with help) and slingbacks (my favourite style of sandal). Crop tops, hats, small scarves, cutout backs, crochet cardigans and a number of the optional trends don’t light my fire at all, so I hope others enjoy!

So, Angie, first of all, thank you for this outstanding post. Lots of great ideas and inspiration. Something to get excited about! It’s step one for moving out of a fashion slump. Many sound boho-influenced, which is not my thing, but as you always say, the key is making the look work for each individual.

I was doing quite well until I hit Number 5. A new look pair of trousers, indeed. I’ll have to think about what this means for me.

6.White stuff: I also love white for spring and summer. Hmm. I had a white belt that I returned. Don’t love white pants. Rethink.

7.Sport the new colours: I can use more of the right colors in my wardrobe. I rarely buy them, though. I have had my eye on the Tiffany Reversible Tote in Tiffany Blue/Platinum but have not seen it in person. Such a fresh color and I think it would add a great pop to lots of outfits: http://www.tiffany.com/shoppin.....-ni+0-t+-k+

8.Wedged Sandals: This is on my list now, thank you. I recently bought a pair of wedged boots (Maryns) and they are quite nice.

9.Low heels: I love a great kitten heel, as long as it is sassy and not dowdy. Thanks, Mrs. O, for wearing them so well!

10.Long pendant necklaces: I’m game.

I’m interested in exploring soft blouses, too, so perhaps my list is longer than I originally thought. Should make for a fun spring shopping season.

Thanks for the list. I think I am doing OK this year thanks to you. I love all things stripped but have to pass too short and chubby. I saw several fit and flare Taylor dress on Nordstrom’s web site that are beautiful. I bought this jacket at Express in both white and black http://www.express.com/cotton-.....038;Mppg=0. Are they OK for a sleeveless jacket for spring? So glad to find them it is just too hot in the south for long sleeve blazers.

I forgot to comment on the fashion forward items in the paragraph. I’m covered on the gilet, a white crochet cardigan, small silk squares, flat oxfords and a pair of sling backs.
I’d love to find a great pleated skirt, chain handle bag, and cat and conversational prints…and possibly a sheer crop top that would be worn over a longer top.
Midi skirts, crop tops, floppy hats, sharp shouldered jackets, cut away backs, clogs, tie-dye, and fringe will be best enjoyed on others.

Thanks, Angie! I feel so much better :)

I love this list – thank you. I like the idea of white dresses for summer but somehow they all feel either like nighties (the more flowy, romantic cuts) or nurses’ uniforms (the more structured ones) on me. How can I get over this? And… am i the only one who feels a bit disappointed when a favourite look becomes trendy? I have always loved stripes but now everyone’s wearing them, I’m dreading the day they begin to look dated.

I am *so* excited to see that I already own (and am currently wearing) quite a large proportion of your list. Yippee – I love it when that happens! :-)

I think I’ve got everything on the list of 10. I doubt I’ll do much shopping this season, but I feel I can never get enough soft blouses, color, and white white white. I’d also like to try some cat prints, mini bags, pleated skirts, and floppy hats.

Chalk me up for the “more adventerous” list! I have a few pieces off of their already.

On my list i still need a soft pussybow (ugh that word! lol) blouse. I want some longer length skirts/dresses and I *might* try a maxi dress or skirt this year. Maybe. We shall see.

Great list Angie. My stylist at Nordstrom recently visited/sorted my closet and the next week we shopped triple points to fill in the gaps I needed. Happy to see many items on your list. Hardest thing for me is finding comfy stylish feminine shoes. We then went on a trip to Santa Barbara and saw everyone wearing soft neutrals- very little color. Perhaps that is because color abounds in nature there. In Dallas we tend to be too bright. I decided to avoid embellishments but will stick to my recent purchases. Angie you are so helpful!

I always look forward to the trend/ must have posts, they are such fun!

1) Flares – I thought I would be all over this look but I have yet to find the right pair. I am wearing my bootcuts. I guess I’m dipping my toes into this trend.
2) Soft Blouses – love them and would like some more.
3) Fit and flare frock – if you know me you know the answer.
4) Stripes – just added another top to the collection, I will try to resist buying more.
5) New look trousers – already much loved.
6) White – yes to accessories, T-shirts and blouses.
7) New colours – coral, lavender and turquoise are already present.
8) Wedged sandals – I have no need for another pair of sandals in this rainy climate. pass.
9) Low heels – if stable then yes.
10) Long pendants – I have two and would not object to a third.

Of the fashion forward list only fringe, crochet, tie-dye don’t appeal. Midi skirts, crop tops, sling backs, small silk scarves, a gilet and animal prints are already present. I guess I’m more ready for spring than I thought :-)

Thank you for your concise thoughts Angie. I appreciate the time it must take to compile your list.

This list is so helpful! So far

1) I wore bootcuts exclusively till a few onths ago. Check!
2) No blouses in my closet yet but I tried on one I liked last week. It will be added soon.
3) Definitely excited about fit and flare dresses.
4) Stripes are a maybe. I’ll try them on but I’m trying to avoid adding more t-shirts and that’s the only way I could see myself wearing them.
5) I have cropped cargos but they’re gear-ish. I’m open to cropped pants.
6) I’m too messy to wear a solid white item. However, I could see myself acquiring a white belt or a black and white printed piece. My new sunglasses have cream detailing if that counts.
7) Excited about the prospect of bright colors, though I haven’t seen them in stores yet. I would love a cobalt or citron trench.
8) Maye on the wedged sandals. Only if I find something distinctive that won’t look dated once they’re out again.
9) Already ordered a pair of low heels! Definitely in favor of this trend.
10) I’ll just transfer my existing pendants to longer chains. Wondering how large a pendant needs to be to carry this off…

Thanks for putting this together Angie! It really helps give direction to one’s thought process.

Great list! I have everything on here

I’m doing well too! I’ve spent quite a lot of money (for me) over the last two years revamping my wardrobe with YLF so I don’t want to buy much this year, so I’m thrilled to have a lot of what’s on here already.

1. Flared jeans – I’m sticking with my favourite boot cuts
2. Blouses. I bought the Charles Tyrwhitt purple pussy bow blouse Angie recommended some months back. As you’d expect it is perfect – luxurious fabric, good cut etc. I think I possibly need something in more of a spring colour but at least I’ve ticked the box!
3. Fit and Flare dress. It’s an ideal silhouette for me as a pear so it’s what I go for naturally and I have just bought two more on sale
4. Stripes. It took me some time to find the right one for my Chanel gal on the go look, but I managed it (low contrast was the answer for me). So another tick.
5. New pants silhouette. Oh dear, this is my one major gap. I’ve only just embraced skinnies so feel pleased I’ve tried a new silhouette. I’ll be honest and say I’m scared by the look of these, but also really can’t justify new pants this season, so won’t be buying as things stand at the moment.
6. White. YES! I bought white jeans last summer and one day I’ll even take the tags off and wear them. When I have bought my stain removal pen, that is…
7. New colours. I’ve bought a tomato red jacket from H&M. Perhaps I could take the tags off that and wear it with my white jeans?!
8. Wedged sandals. Tick. Bought those last year.
9. Kitten heels. I score a cheaty tick for that as I do have a couple of old ones but they’re not really that summery!
10. Long pendant necklace. Nearly – I need one with a longer chain so I’m partway there.

I’m very pleased with myself – I only get a ‘poor effort’ score on No5. A couple of ‘could do betters’ as well but it’s a great start for a season where I don’t want to buy much!
