How To Double Knot a Long Strand of Pearls

For years readers have been requesting a post on how I knot my pearls. Well, instead of writing a post we’ve put together this very short video. It’s a dead simple step by step tutorial on how I achieve my knotted pearl look.

I use an extra long, 72 inch, glass pearl strand necklace. It’s important to use a beaded necklace with a bit of weight so that it drapes better once knotted. You won’t achieve quite the same effect with a strand of lightweight plastic beaded pearls. Of course, you don’t need to use pearls. Any long beaded necklace with a bit of weight will work.

Let me know if any part of the video needs further clarification!

Here are some of the outfits I accessorized with knotted pearls:

How To Double Knot a Long Strand of Pearls

I’m glad this was a dificult post to write because this way we could see you and listen to you. It somehow brighten the rainy day over here :)
That’s a great technique and the end result is beautiful.
Thank you for posting this.

Fabulous, and though I don’t have time to try this before jetting off to work, the tutorial looks very easy to follow. Thanks for taking the time to do this post, as I’ve been very curious about your knotting technique.

This is totally different than the knotting experiments that I was trying. My long faux-pearl necklaces actually unhook, so I was detaching the clasp, creating some knots, wrapping the necklace around my neck, and then fastening it again. My version is more complicated to undo, so I will certainly give yours a try.

(You have such a lovely voice!)

Thanks, Angie! I always wondered how to do this. Watching you do it and hearing your instructions is so helpful. You sound just like I imagined!

Lovely Angie!!

How many inches is that long pearl necklace? Just an estimate so I know how long is long enough??

Gah! I just watched the video on the home page without the text– I just clicked the link and saw– 72 inches! Sorry about that!

oooh, slapping forehead! That’s how you do that!!!
Thanks for sharing and congrats on your video debut! I hope to see many more youlookfabtv videos in the future ;-)
Off to practice

Angie! Videos are brilliant! What a fab tutorial – I can’t wait to try it. I hope there are more videos in the future! I could listen to you talk alllll day. :)

Oh no, I can’t get the video to work!! It may be an accessibility issue. Regardless, congrats on your first foray into video!! This will no doubt be a super-popular feature!

love it- darn should have bought that super long strand of white faux pearls at the Rack the other day..!
Also cool- after reading your blog for so long now I have a “voice” to go along with it!

OMG!!! What a wonderful treat this morning !! LOVED seeing and hearing you. You just made my day!!!

What a great video. I don’t have any pearls that long, but now I am on the hunt. Thank you so much for sharing!

Thank you for taking the time to do this. It brighten my day and I will try this tonight as soon as I get home!

So nice to hear your voice… I love the styling of that strand of pearls! I am not a pearl wearer now, but you may have just inspired me to be one!

So excited about this – I’ve been wondering and wondering about how you do this. Will save this up as a special treat to enjoy when I’ve got the children into bed tonight… Thanks Angie.

Angie, you are a magician! Brilliant! Many thanks.

Angie! You are so lovely! I absolutely loved seeing and hearing on you on video. I love the idea of YouLookFab TV!

Brilliant and easy to follow video too. Will definitely be giving this a try! Think it could work with the Nordies blue glass beads too?

OMG!!! Youlookfab TV!!! I am practically dizzy with excitement. What a wonderful addition to the site and a great tutorial to launch it. I was one of those many readers who asked about how you knotted your pearls, and I am thrilled with the video demonstration. Angie, any recommendations on where to find pearls with the appropriate weight to them? I know Nordstrom’s has long faux pearls and I was wondering if those would work.

It was such a treat to see and hear lovely you this morning!

Go YouLookFab TV !! Angie – I hope this will become a more regular feature..( even if the post is not difficult to write :)

Me again! Angie, here is the necklace that I was considering:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/29.....tback=2035

Do you think this one would work?

Thanks for the kind and encouraging words, ladies :-)

Marianna, the method will absolutely work with the turquoise beads too.

Deb, I linked to a suitable pearl necklace in my post and popped it into the Store. Have a squizz. Those are the very ones I have and am demonstrating with.

Wow, Angie

That was really helpful! Great video. I’ve been considering doing video clips on my blog, and you are so right about some things being too difficult to describe in words or even in static pictures. I’m new to your blog, and I am loving your great advice!

Thanks!!! Kristie

I’m so excited to view your video when I have some time this weekend. I’m off to work, but am interested to see how close I came to figuring this out. Extra excited to hear and see you in action working your magic, what a treat! Thanks for going to all this trouble for us!

Thanks Angie! In my excitement, I completely missed the link. I just went to the YLF store and placed my order!

Thanks, Angie! I’m anxious to try your technique. I’ve only begun wearing pearls within the last couple of years, and although I feel quite proficient with accessorizing, the way the doubled/tripled strand of pearls moves around all day, drives me nuts! My favorite pearls are some fresh water cultured ones, because they’re a bit irregular. I’ll be interested to see how they knot. They have fantastic weight.

It was so nice to see you, Angie! Unfortunately I cannot hear you as I am at work but I will do it later tonight!
This tutorial is great1 i thought i had it all figured out how you knot your pearls but I was completely wrong – you do it in a different way. I am going to practice tonight!
I assume this technique should work with freshwater pearls as well, right?

Angie, you are made for the camera. Awesome video and so clear and helpful. Thank you.

You have such a lovely lilt and cadence to your voice, Angie :)

Thanks for putting together this tutorial, it helps more than you know to just see the process visually once. Can’t wait to get my hands on a longer strand of beads to try this out…

So fun to see a video of you! Love it! I’m going to give it a go next time I wear my super long pearls.

Angie – you are so lovely! Thanks for the tips. I think the video made it perfectly clear and I can see how this was totally impossible to show through a blog post.

angie, yay! the video is brilliant!!! please, please, please keep them coming. i am wearing a long strand of pearls today and am off to try your knotting method. i ♥ it! happy friday!!

*clapping excitedly*
I have been longing to know how you do that!

Only those who have met you in person will know for sure but you appear very natural in front of the camera. I can hear South African lilt in your accent. Fabulous.

I’m picky about the pearls and the clasp. I went to the Nordstrom website and they didn’t show the clasp. Can you post a picture of it, or describe it?

Thanks!

Perfect! LOVE you on video! :)

just tried the knot on the same strand (in gray). love these pearly beauties. wearing them knotted now.

Angie, you were made for video! Fantastic! Can’t wait to try the knotting, too! Please do more videos, they’re great!

This is the post I have been waiting for, yay!!! I’m one of those people who kept nagging you about the pearl necklace knotting technique, so you’ve just made my day, Angie. And I didn’t know we are pearl necklace twins, I have the same one. It’s a fantastic necklace, you can wear it so many different ways, and now I can start practicing this particular technique.

Thank you sooooo much!!!

Oh, and I’m positively giddy at the prospect of a Youlookfabtv series. You’re a natural at this, Angie, and you have the perfect voice and accent!

What a brilliant idea to have Youlookfabtv! It was that old video that got me to your site in the first place, Angie. Your wonderful on camera and the video quality is excellent…Greg? Looking forward to more (no pressure or anything…maybe a tour of your closet?) Thank you for yet another new addition to your site.

I add my congrats to your video! Thank you, I’m going to be practicing – the video helps alot in figuring out the how to. And we get to see and listen to you again and again. Thanks so much, looking forward to more videos!

Ok, I had to report back. I just tried it, and it works perfectly!! My knots seem a bit smaller than yours, but that’s just a detail, right;-)

Oooh I was so excited to find this video when I logged on! I have wondered how your knots were done. I have tried many different things but nothing ever worked. Your video was very easy to follow–thank you!!!!! Since I have been following YLF I have become devoted to team pearls thanks to seeing all your lovely posts. :)

OH yippee!! I have one of these strands of black freshwater pearls (quite heavy, quite large diameter, basically just like yours but black) and when I just loop it around my neck, I end up with the longest loop sliding down and the shortest one virtually choking me. I HATE that! I am so going to use your advice, though I may have to watch this video over and over with the pearls in hand to get it right. No matter, though, I find your voice charming!

Angie- I love the video, and I love your top! Where did you get it? Please keep making videos – you are so telegenic and charming.

Wow fantastic to ‘see’ you, great tutorial x

Great tutorial! Thank you. I love seeing and hearing you in action. More videos, please!

So adorable… you, your voice, your smile, the video – thank you, Angie!

What a treat! So happy to see video coming to YLF. More Angie to enjoy :-)

Just tried this with the turquoise glass beads — works great! Thanks. :)

Whoa.
Weirdly good timing. Packing for a cruise had me just last night twisting long pearls into a passamenterie cording & tassels combo. Excellent video. Thanks.
Greg, sound quality would be much improved in a smaller room with more upholstery or draperies. Acoustics here are a little harsh for Angie’s pitch. Too much echo. Still loved it!

Terrific video, Angie. It took me a couple times but I finally acomplished my feat! I’ve been wearing pearls alot since YLF came into my life and I love it.

Holly

What a treat to watch! I couldn’t get the video to work on my ipad (in my sick bed–now bronchitis!), but I got up just to see this. Super technique and you’re more than perfect on camera Angie. I’ll try the first thing with my long strand once I’m back on my feet.

I’m looking forward to more YLFTV in the future!

Wonderful – have seen it now and what a treat it is to see and hear you in action. So lovely. And thank you for the pearl tutorial – brilliant!

Angie, you did an amazing job and it made me smile to hear your voice. How appropriate that pearls were your first installment of YLF TV! Great addition to the site. Congrats, Greg & Angie.

I’m joining the commentators above who must know more about that top you’re wearing in that video…

Loved the pearls video too! Out of curiosity, just how weighty is a 72-inch strand of glass pearls?

You are adorable Angie! LOVE the video posts, keep ‘em coming! Oh, and I will have to try that next time I wear my pearls!!!

I love the video and can’t wait to get my hands on a necklace to try this out.

Love the video – can’t wait to see more. Thanks for the great how to!

I just came back to comment one more time. I can’t get over what a gem you are, Angie! I just tried the technique with my long pearls and love it. Now I’ll wear them more often thanks to you.

Angie – I hope these vids show up more often. I loved the tutorial and the sound of your voice!
I would love to see a scarf tutorial as well!

You are a doll!

That necklace must be the most versatile piece of jewelry. I love it and now want one too!

okay, I’ve been practicing all day but simply cannot seem to get that accent down ;-) Got the pearls sorted though. ;-)

Thanks for the kind comments! And thanks to those who chimed in again after road testing the tutorial. Good to know the steps made sense.

April, that’s a Halogen dolman sleeved pullover from this year’s NAS.

Kathy S, these pearls don’t have a clasp. That’s a plus actually. Here they are:

http://youlookfab.com/store/20.....-necklace/

Such fun to hear your lovely voice! Can’t wait to try this with my looong strand of amber beads.

Love the video! Would love some of scarf tying as well!

Angie! It’s SO good to hear you again! What a treat!!!! :) :)

Yay, I practiced with my long strand of heavy black beads (from Nordies) and it worked wonderfully. This is so fun – thank you!

Angie, you’re so good on camera – I think it will be another terrific addition to YLF.

Totally adding “72-inch strand of pearls” to my Christmas shopping list! I’ve always wondered how get such different looks with your pearls; thank you for sharing your secret!

I love this feature, Angie! I thought the instructions were very good (must buy pearls) and I like how you linked to outfits where you use this look. Really a treat to see you in action!

Thank you for the amazing tutorial Angie! I tried this with my turquoise glass bead necklace and it worked great! I hope there will be more YLF TV in the future.

Thanks Angie for the video! It was easy to understand and follow. I had to watch a couple of times just to “see and hear” you in person. It was a treat.

Thank you Angie! Your video is superb!

I am now stringing myself a 60″ necklace of agate, jasper and sterling silver bead so I can play too.

I hope this is just the beginning of your YLF nstructional video career.

I hope this is just the beginning of your YLF instructional video career.

Oh I love this. I could listen to you talk all day! What is next? Beginner scarf tying? A PPL discussion? I can’t wait to see some more.

Love it, looking foward to more video post!

Well Angie, I just had to weigh in properly on this post, now that I can actually watch the video and play along at home with my newly-acquired extra-long pearls. Thank you for outlining such a simple and fabulous styling option for this necklace! It took me a long time to figure out what was happening and had to seek clarification on the forum, but now that I’ve figured it out, I’ 100 per cent on board! It takes no less than a minute to put the right configuration together, and as you promise in the video, you need not touch it again for the rest of the day once it’s around your neck. The necklace itself is such a win, too — substantial enough for this purpose, but not heavy enough to feel cumbersome once on. Thank you thank you thank you! I can’t wait to see your next video venture.

I bought this set of pearls for Valentines day (from my husband). After getting them home and playing with them, I opted to exchange them for smaller pearls. I LOVE them!! I tried them out for the first time yesterday and received three compliments. Thanks for sharing the link!

Brilliant! Love the video! You pull it off with such poise & distinction. Thanks for this.

I am seeing this for the first time, thanks to JulieinMI post about your pearl video! I love it and will save this to practice with my long string of pearls. Seeing it is so much better than learning to do this through print. You are a “natural” on camera, Angie, and I look forward to a few more visual-style topics that warrant imagery.
