Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Top Picks

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale has officially begun. After a week of early access to cardholders, it’s now open to all. Brand new merchandise for Fall and Winter 2017 will be discounted for two weeks only. Prices go back up on August 7.

I spent a couple of weeks preparing and preselecting the sale with clients and it was FABULOUS. We refreshed our wardrobes, had a ball, and got a great start on the new cold weather dressing season. Items ran out of stock faster than usual this year, and I’m not sure why. Reduced inventory levels, an increase in the number of cardholders, a more desirable assortment of merchandise — your guess is as good as mine.

Generally, I was impressed with the level of quality. Neutrals and blouses reigned supreme, knitwear was in short supply, and there was much less leather. Topshop’s offerings and the dress department were disappointing, but coats and jackets were particularly good.

Along the way I noted the top items I saw, and have put together five lists that might be helpful if you’re navigating the sale:

I’ve seen all of these items in person and on a range of body types and sizes, across petite, regular, plus and tall women. You’ll see a wide assortment of items here, reflecting the range of lifestyles, style preferences and budgets of my clientele.

A few things to consider as you browse the lists:

  • I’ve collected one colour in each item, but be sure to browse through ALL the colour options.
  • Check whether the items are available in petite and plus because in most cases I’ve only provided the description in regular sizes. Nordstrom’s in-house brands usually provide petite and plus sizing.
  • My descriptions are detailed and specific for a reason. They suggest a match for a particular body type, comfort level, or style preference.
  • Items do come back into stock throughout the fortnight of the sale, so be tenacious and keep checking back on the items that tickle your fancy.
  • At the end of each list there’s a link to the relevant collection page where you can see the items together with their descriptions.

Feel free to ask questions in the comments sections about my picks or any other NAS items, and I’ll do my best to help you out. We’ve also been discussing NAS items on the forum, which is particularly helpful because you can see the items across a range of body types. And please share your own winning purchases in the comments sections.

Ensemble: Utility Pretty

This ensemble was inspired by a wild card birthday present from Greg: a pair of Vince Zip Ankle Utility Pants in dark olive. He chose them because I have nothing like that in my closet, and he fancies the idea of me sporting the look. Why not! I instantly loved them because they’re very tailored, have fun zippers on the ankles, and the olive is more brown than green. The length is perfect, hitting me an inch above the ankle bone.

I don’t want to create a masculine vibe with these utility pants. No basic button-down shirts, T-shirts, oxfords, or sneakers. Instead I want to wear them with flouncy shirts and blouses, pointy toe flats, dainty sandals, classic loafers, statement bags and pearls. Here are the exact tops, shoes, bags and pearls from my wardrobe that I’ll be wearing with the new utility pants. You can see me sport the look in the forum.

Choose any colour palette to create your own version. Here are the components of the outfit formula, and some visuals to get you started.

Utility Pants: Choose a pair of neutrally-toned utility or cargo pants. I’ve used shades of olive, brown and khaki because that’s most authentic, but feel free to wear any colour. Chinos will work if you don’t have utility pants.

Pretty Top: You’re after a casual or dressier girly blouse in a solid or pattern to amp up the pretty. No T-shirts, shirts, or tops that look Tomboy. Wear it out, or semi-tucked with a belt. Add a lace camisole if that tickles your fancy. I will.

Feminine Footwear: Choose shoes that are refined, flat or low-heeled. No boyish oxfords, sneakers or chunky shoes this time round. Think pretty pointed flats, ankle strap flats, d’Orsay flats, mules, wrapped sandals, wedged espadrilles, delicate gladiators, or classic loafers. Choose a colour that works with the outfit.

Accessories: Finish off the look with a bag that works with the outfit. Don’t go too casual in the bag if you want to amp up the polish. Add jewellery, eyewear, headgear and watch as desired.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Shopping Strategy

For me, the NAS is perfectly timed. I like to shop early in the retail season so that I can forget about shopping for a while and simply wear the heck out of my clothes. This means that I’m usually done with Spring and Summer shopping by about the middle of May, and ready to think about my Autumn and Winter style in the first week of July.

I practice what I call organized emotional shopping. I’m a very emotional shopper who listens to her heart and feelings. But I temper my emotions so that my purchases are sufficiently practical and sensible choices. It works for me.

The Emotion

I like to evolve my style every season to keep things fresh. Otherwise I get bored with my style. So unless I’m replenishing wardrobe essentials, I’m looking for something different when I go into the NAS.

But I don’t go into the NAS knowing exactly how I want to evolve my style. I enjoy this uncertainty, and I trust that my emotions will help me solve the puzzle as I select, try on, and assess items in the NAS dressing room. Apart from shopping with hubby Greg for my birthday, the NAS is my most enjoyable shopping experience of the year because the element of surprise is an adrenaline rush and it is so very satisfying to step outside my comfort zone and find a winning item.

The Organization

edit and review my closet monthly, so I know what I own, how it fits, and how I currently feel about it. This prevents me from duplicating items when I shop, and gives me an accurate mental picture of the types of outfits I was wearing last Autumn and Winter. It provides the frame of reference for the items that I bring into the NAS dressing room.

I also keep a running list in my head of wardrobe holes, items that need replenishing, the factors that affect my style, my budget, and my 2017 style goals. This is the “organization” that tempers my emotions when I shop.

The Process

With all this in mind I began focussed NAS browsing at the Flagship Nordstrom in downtown Seattle. You can see what I brought into the dressing room in this forum thread. Footwear, knitwear, jeans, trousers, shirts, scarves, jackets, a dress, and a coat.

A few more points:

  • I tend to shop higher price points at the NAS, which eats into my budget faster than lower price points. I therefore come home with fewer items.
  • I don’t shop for wardrobe basics like undies, hosiery, socks, loungewear, yoga wear and sleepwear at this sale.
  • I prioritized footwear this year, because I need to replace a number of shoes.
  • I’m always on the lookout for interesting, warm knitwear, toppers and boots because that’s what I live in from October to April.

I started browsing the sale in the footwear department because shoes were the priority. I was instantly drawn to Aquatalia’s Genna Weatherproof Tall Boots because they had pointy toes. Favouring booties, I haven’t worn tall black riding boots tucked into jeans in years, but was once again feeling the vibe. The boots fit and felt like a dream, and that was that. It was right then and there that I knew how I wanted to evolve my style: Casual Equestrian. If you’ve been on YLF for a while, you’ll know that my love for horses runs very deep.

Casual Equestrian led me to Sam Edelman’s Faux Fur Collar A-Line Anorak and a pair of Rag & Bone Dre Slim Fit Boyfriend Jeans in dark olive. I was drawn to the clean dark olive as a break from the faded denim distressing that continues to flood the retail market. And I knew Greg would like them! The newness for my style here is manifold. Casual Equestrian instead of Dressy Equestrian. Multiple shades of olive. An anorak. Knee-high boots. And full-length jeans that are relaxed when tucked into tall boots.

The full-length jeans feel fresh amidst my cropped jeans and pants. With the longer length on the jeans, I could entertain booties with a shorter shaft. As a Paul Green fan, I headed straight to what the brand had to offer. The Paul Green Logan Bootie in grey suede worked well with the olive jeans, felt heavenly on my feet, and looked a little equestrian. Grey is my least favourite neutral, but the grey is lighter and more textured in person, and works well with my pearl grey Furla satchel.

I went back to the dressing room having fully committed to the two pairs of boots. After that, a chunk of my budget was gone, so I had to be careful about what I chose next.

As lovely as the blouses and shirts were, I don’t wear them from October onwards, especially since I just got new blouses for my birthday last week. Off they went onto the “no thank you” pile in the dressing room. The J.Crew tweed blazer was fabulous, but I have two Smythe riding jackets. No thank you. The scarves weren’t the right colours, and the trousers were not a good fit.

At that stage, I felt I needed to inject some Pretty into the mix. I loved Rebecca Taylor’s Merino Wool Blend Pullover with embroidery, but the fluff of the wool irritated my nose, so no go. Then I fitted on Classiques Entier’s Bell Sleeve Silk & Cashmere Sweater, and it was a slam dunk. Fitted, very pretty, comfortable, and perfect with my pearls. The sleeves do not overwhelm my slight frame. It looked fab with the olive jeans, riding boots and anorak.

And last, I needed a pair of essential jeans because one of my workhorse pairs that I like to travel in bit the dust (holes on the crotch point are not a good look). I was smitten with the Frame’s Le Nouveau Split Hem Jeans, which were a perfect fit. But they are Summer jeans for me because I don’t want to wear them with socks. So back they went. More sensible were the Citizen’s of Humanity Emerson Boyfriend Jeans, which are ideal to wear on ten hour flights to see my Dad in the Netherlands.

And last, I loved Fuzzi’s Print Tulle Sheath Dress. It fit and draped like a dream, was an elegant length, and the textured embroideries are sublime. So, so, so pretty. It would be a great holiday dress, and I could wear it with low heels. Alas, my budget was gone. For a while, I debated getting the two pairs of boots and dress to stay within my budget. But I’ll absolutely get more use out of the jeans, anorak and pullover, so the dress joined the “no thank you” pile. It doesn’t help that almost every client I shopped with at the NAS asked if I’d bought the frock because they perceive it as “an Angie dress”. Fun to hear, but I must be practical about my purchases and I can’t have everything.

Built through trial and error, my NAS shopping strategy works well for me. These are the NAS items that made the final cut and followed me home. I did very well, and am thrilled with my start to Fall and Winter 2017:

An Addition to My Skincare Regimen

I’m not one who enjoys browsing and trying new beauty products. I stick to a regular skincare regimen, using products until they fail or are discontinued. That way I can forget about skincare products, keeping that part of my life uncomplicated.

That said, every once in a while I introduce something new to my skincare regimen. A few weeks ago, at a wonderful birthday facial, I discovered Caudalie’s Vinosource Overnight Recovery Oil. I’ve been using Caudalie’s products for about a year, and was delighted to hear that the essential oil that the aesthetician used in the facial was from Caudalie too. The idea is that you apply moisture — like an essential oil — to your skin first so that moisturizers and sunscreen are more effectively absorbed afterwards. A moist sponge is more absorbent than a dry one — and the same applies to your skin.

I apply six drops to my face and neck in the morning and at night, and can feel and see the difference already. My skin looks “shiny like an apple”, and feels supple and nourished throughout the day. I have dry and sensitive skin, so use the product twice a day (once a day is good for regular skin.) The aesthetician, who has oily skin, also uses the product. It sounds counter-intuitive, but apparently the right essential oils work wonders on an oily skin too.

On advice from my dermatologist several years ago, I need to use extremely gentle products for my sensitive skin. He was dead right, so absolutely no Retin-A, retinol or alpha hydroxy acids for me. Like all their products, Caudalie’s essential oil is wonderfully gentle and ever so slightly scented. A little goes a long way, and I’m thrilled with the addition to my skincare routine.

Do you use essential oils for your skin? Have you found that you use them in very humid weather too?

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: Top 30 Teaser

This is my 12th Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (NAS for short.) It’s my favourite sale of the year because it’s NEW season items that go on sale for a short period of time. Personally, I find the timing perfect because I’m done with Spring and Summer shopping by the middle of May and ready to think about my Autumn and Winter style in July. The ambiance is particularly fun when you live in Seattle, because Nordstrom is a Seattle company. I LOVE the NAS, and look forward to it every year.

Preselections for the sale are in full swing for Nordstrom cardholders. I’ve been working around the clock with clients helping them refresh for the upcoming season, and it’s been fabulous. As always, my comprehensive top picks lists per wardrobe category will be posted just after midnight on Friday July 21st when the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is open to all. In the meantime though, here’s an early teaser. Thirty items across all price points that blew me away. They looked better in person and on people than they did on display. That’s why it’s very important to try things on, and get intel from others on how things fit, feel, look and drape! Generally, I was impressed with the level of quality this year, so you’ll hear me say that a lot. Some of the items are available in multiple colours, and in petite and plus sizes.

Note: Don’t worry if your size is temporarily sold out because some items will be restocked on Friday, AND sizes become available throughout the sale as returns are processed and items are removed from online shopping carts. Keep checking back on the items that tickle your fancy, because chances are high that your size will turn up over the next fortnight. Feel free to ask questions in the comments section if you’re unsure about any of the items, and I’ll do my best to help you out.

Also, check out the NAS category in the forum if you want to chat about all things sale related.

Here are my current top 30:

  • Veronica Beard Benson Moto Jacket: A beautifully fluid moto with a good amount of tailoring. I love the luxe BLUE striped fabric, and graphic tipping. Incredible drape. Gorgeous back seaming. The intricate design detailing is impressive. Slanted pockets are flattering thereby drawing the eye to the waist without defining it. Impeccable quality. Has worked on a range of body types. Sharp.
  • AllSaints Mast Crossbody Tote: Casual Urban Tote Fabness.
  • T Tahari Skylar Leather Moto Jacket: A dressier moto that looks best on those who can fill it out. The fit is GORGEOUS on a larger bust because it's magically streamlining - (thank you Tahari). Runs large. AMAZING in plus sizes too. Impeccable quality. Rich and smart casual. Chic.
  • CeCe Floral Scuba Sheath Dress: This dress surprised me because I thought it would be clingy. Yet, it's wonderfully forgiving on midsection extra bits. You don't need to suck in your tummy because it holds you in. Crease-resistant. Fab on a larger bust. Size up a size. Dressy and fun.
  • Eileen Fisher Leather Detail Wool Sweater Coat: Elegant Hard Edge. A slimming and heavy weight sweater coat. Camouflages muffin top. Looks best when the snaps are fastened. Works surprisingly well on a large bust and shorter neck. Runs at least a size big. Impeccable quality. Sharp.
  • Ted Baker London Lizia Leather Biker Jacket: Gorgeous fit and floral lining with unique rose gold hardware. Fitted with amazing fluidity. Statement collar. Impeccable quality. Versatile.
  • Alice + Olivia Jesse Lace Pullover: Best lace at the sale. Soft, refined, robust and thick. The two-toned effect of the blue and black is sublime. You have to wear a camisole, which showcases your shape and offsets its boxy silhouette. Solid back. Impeccable quality.
  • Pendleton Paul Bunyan Plaid Wool Blend Barn Coat: Blue Bumblebee Fabness. CHARMING, happy, and one of the best coats at the sale. Very unique, and a work of art. The leather trim around the collar and pockets is gorgeous. Fun red piping on the inside. Sufficiently oversized to fit chunky knitwear underneath. Very bold statement. Seams run off the shoulder making a very trendy statement. Impeccable quality.
  • Classiques Entier Bell Sleeve Silk & Cashmere Sweater: Silk cashmere feels HEAVENLY against the skin. If you're after a pretty, form-fitting black top that does not overwhelm a slim frame - try this top. Clingy, so not good for muffin top. The sleeves do not get crushed under a roomier coat. Ultra refined, and perfect with pearls. Dress it up or down. Impeccable quality.
  • Veronica Beard Canteen Puff Sleeve Blouse: This shirt is a work of art. There are all sorts of insets and seams that you can't see in the photo that are sublime. The sleeves are architectural. The model is wearing a size too big, since it's more fitted in person. You have to be okay with the puffy sleeves. It has worked on both straight and curvy clients, AND on a larger bust. Fun back tailoring. Impeccable quality.
  • Fuzzi Print Tulle Sheath Dress: An INCREDIBLE dress for a narrow body type. Tight but very comfortable. It's clingy, but drapes beautifully. The pattern and embroideries are stunning. Elegant length. Runs one to two sizes small. Impeccable quality
  • Halogen Halogen Leather Cuff: Graphic arm candy that looks polished, professional and pretty despite the hard edge. All the colours and metals are fab.
  • Hinge Butterfly Collage Square Silk Scarf: The pattern is a work of art in both colours. Beautifully drapey, silky and soft. Fun tassels that keep the slippery silk in place. A designer look at a fraction of the price.
  • Halogen Pleated Scarf: A crystal pleated scarf in a better size than the average neckerchief. Amazing texture. All the patterns are fab.
  • Halogen Halogen Scallop Edge Sweater: GREAT solid top for a smaller bust and/or longer neck. Super soft. Semi-fitted but NOT clingy. The scalloped edges are divine. All the colours are nice. Runs small for Halogen. XL is good on a size US10/12.
  • AGL Cap Toe Flat: Deluxe Pretty Flat Fabness. The metallic leather is sublimely subtle and cool-toned. Fab comfort when you don't need a lot of arch support. Works well on bunions.
  • Argento Vivo Chain Ball Drop Earrings: Graphic big earrings that are more lightweight than they look. Dramatic.
  • Trouvé Leopard Print Blazer: I couldn't believe this was not a designer item. AMAZING architectural silhouette from all angles. The inset peplum is a work of art. Beautifully made. Tailored in a cleverly fluid way. WOW.
  • Halogen Kick Flare Knit Ankle Pants: Every client, across all body types, looked great in these cropped flares. The fit and very substantial fabric are magical because they mould to the body in a flattering way. Ideal for business casual. Not clingy. Forgiving and comfy. Good price. All the colours are nice.
  • Aquatalia by Marvin K Genna Weatherproof Tall Boot: THE casual tall boot for narrow calves, but will only work on petites if you have relatively long legs. The pointy toe is an on-trend update on the classic riding boot style. SUBLIME comfort if your foot is not too wide. Made in Italy and impeccable quality. Weatherproof. Equestrian Chic.
  • Rebecca Taylor Tweed Peplum Jacket: GORGEOUS dressy peplum jacket that looks as good with jeans as it does with business casual bottoms. Works well on curvy and straighter body types. Dramatic side and back silhouette. Luxe textured fabric adds life to the grey. Impeccable quality.
  • Earthies 'Essen' Ghillie Flat: Cutest casual flats at the NAS. Unique. Extremely comfortable, with excellent arch support. Can work for low and higher volume feet. Size up for wide feet. All the colours are nice.
  • Lauren Ralph Lauren Hooded Quilted Coat: Casual Equestrian Fabness. A beautifully made quilted coat with waist definition and removable hood. Gorgeous cognac piping. Rich and classic. Runs a size big. Chic.
  • SARTO By Franco Sarto Johanna Loafer: Super fun iridescent velvet loafers with tonal hardware. Comfortable. Runs half a size big. Comes in solid patent too. Versatile.
  • Paul Green Logan Bootie: AMAZINGLY comfortable casual booties that mould to both a higher and lower volume foot. The grey is lighter and richer in person. I love the light sole and white stitching on the grey and camel. All the colours are nice.
  • BLANKNYC Embroidered Faux Leather Moto Jacket: Super cute faux leather moto with gorgeous embroidery and tonal studs. Runs a size to two small. Very fitted.
  • Louise Et Cie Fenn Lace-Up Oxford: Polished & Tailored Androgynous Fabness. Amazing textured leather, and very comfortable. Has worked well on both higher and lower volume feet. Sharp.
  • Sam Edelman Faux Fur Collar A-Line Anorak: Fabulous cocoon anorak in a sour shade of olive. Voluminous yet structured in all the right places. It's lightly quilted so will work for Fall or a mild Winter. Roomy in the sleeves so great over chunky knitwear. Cosy and trendy. AMAZING dramatic funnel neck and faux fur trim. Will not work on a short neck unless you fold down the collar.
  • Halogen Asymmetrical Zip Boiled Wool Blend Coat: A wool coat that can be zipped up for structure or left unzipped for an avant-garde vibe. Sublime shade of teal. Has worked best on body types that can fill it out in the shoulders and/or bust. Runs big. All colours are fab. As amazing in plus sizes.
  • Rebecca Minkoff Leather Camera Bag with Guitar Strap: Chic crossbody or shoulder bag in a roomy size with fabulous interchangeable guitar strap. Impeccable quality. All colours are fab.
