It’s a skirt season and this is the skirt of the year. The silhouette is a straight or A-line denim skirt at a midi, midaxi, or maxi length with a long front slit. Some have back slits to mirror the front slit. The fit is body-con, tailored, or fluidly tailored. Cargo pocket detailing is found on some versions. Blue denim washes are popular. Black, white, metallic, and earth-toned denim are available too. Most denim brands and retailers are offering a version of this skirt. It’s ubiquitous.

This collection shows a variety of different examples.

In most cases, the front slit is high, which falls open as you stride thereby showcasing the thighs much like a mini skirt does. Ironically, although the length provides leg coverage, the slits offset that coverage. That said, some versions have shorter front slits that showcase the knees while keeping the thighs covered. Also, wear hosiery for leg coverage if you like that idea.

As seen in the examples, most types of footwear can be worn with the skirt. From casual sneakers and gladiators, to clogs, loafers, mules, platforms, dainty pumps, stiletto strappy sandals, tall boots, cowboy boots, wedge sandals, Mary Janes, ballet flats, slides, booties, flip-flops, Birkenstocks, and ankle-strap pumps. Take your pick.

This silhouette is not for me because I dislike high slits on skirts and dresses that reveal the top parts of my legs. I prefer coverage. I have a denim skirt on my shopping list, so I tried Mango’s Vent Midi Denim Skirt instead. The asymmetrical back looks as good as the front, and no slits. I also like the even light blue wash. It was not a good fit on me. Too long and overwhelming and hard to alter, but I like the concept.

If you enjoy showcasing your legs and wearing denim, the skirt of the year might be worth a try. It’s breezy and easier to walk in than expected. Quite alluring too. The A-line versions, and versions with front and back slits provide more ease of movement than the tight versions with a single front slit.

Our 19-year-old goddaughter tried one on in white denim and a midaxi length. It looked great and she liked it. She didn’t feel constricted when she walked up and down the dressing room corridor. She ultimately passed on the skirt feeling that she might not wear it because – like her godmother – she favours pants, jeans, and dresses to skirts.

Over to you. What do you think of the skirt of the year?
