Feminine looks with skinny zippered jeans

September 2nd, 2009

The 80’s revival of fashion has brought back skinny zippered  jeans, but the modern incarnation is longer, sleeker and full of stretch. What would we do without stretch! I shudder to think. It’s the only way to wear tight clothing.

I was enamored with the idea of sporting zippered skinnies again because of my weakness for zipper detailing. I also fell in love with how the hems cascade over the foot and expose the ankle bone when unzipped, adding an unexpected and interesting detail to the outfit. So I recently added a premium pair to my denim collection and they’ve become a fast favourite. I’ve worn them three times in the last week.

These particular skinnies are tighter than my other pairs, but surprisingly more comfortable because they’re softer with more stretch. And you can’t even feel the zippers. Because they’re tighter, they’ve added a bit of curve to my legs which is a welcome change. It’s nice to have a variety of skinny jeans, each with a slightly different look and fit.

Zipper detailing is quite masculine and severe, so I like these jeans best when contrasted with feminine touches. Above on the left I’ve matched them with girly items: a ruffle blouse, oversized pearl beads and low yellow pumps. But I couldn’t resist throwing in the androgynous boyfriend blazer for some 80’s fun. A huge blast from the past, but much improved and I’m enjoying every second of it.

I’ve added similar feminine accents in the outfit on the right: a waterfall draped top, Chanel-esque jacket and chunky pearls. The buckled black booties are edgier, but I like how they contrast with the prim and proper top half of the ensemble.

The zippered skinny is also great zipped-up, where it essentially becomes a normal pair of skinnies. Above you can see a close-up of my new pair zipped and scrunched with flats. I wasn’t sure about unzipped with flats because of the length, but I wore this look yesterday and it worked fine. Lots of possibilities.

If you don’t like skinny jeans, this item is not for you. But if you’re all over the silhouette like I am, give the zippered version a try. They are available at Banana Republic, Martin & Osa, Nordstrom, Guess, Armani Exchange, Bebe and Shopbop at the moment and they’ll turn up in more stores as the season progresses.

I L.O.V.E. it!!! And not only because I’m a huge fan of zippers in general;-) I think the zippers here add some extra pizzazz to the skinny jean look. So fun to play around with (experimenting with different shoes and booties like you did e.g.). And of course you’ve managed to find the perfect balance between the more masculine/androgynous zipper & blazer and those gorgeous feminine tops, the pearls and bags are the icing on the cake.

By the way: maybe it’s just the way you are standing and the way your hair falls in the second picture, but you have a delicious punkrock edge there, which contrasts beautifully with that Chanel-esque jacket. SO fab!!

Wow Angie, you look incredible! The zippered skinnies are pure perfection on you and I want to run out and gt a pair myself! And the outfits! So gorgeous. I am in love with that black waterfall top.

Oh Angie, these are my favorite posts when you post your pictures. Everything is just oh so right, and marvelously styled and beautiful. I love the yellow shoes touch, so bold. And those black flats in 2nd outfit are adorable. There will be some serious copycating going on come fall. :-)
I am actually going to be in the market for new skinnies soon since my recent ones are getting a little too big for comfort, so I will definitely consider the zippered skinnies.

LOVELY! Great tips for styling the zipper skinnies too. I so want a pair but it will have to wait till next year…

FABULOUS! Sadly, not for me. I’d have to shorten them so much the zippers would be gone. ;-)

Angie, this outfit in the middle is perfection. I love how you have combined these items: Chunky pearls and Chanel-like jacket are no doubt very elegant but I can’t help to find them a bit matronly after certain age, especially the pearls… Of course, your funky hair style and persona effaces this effect too. But what I love the most is those shoes…MUST.HAVE.THOSE.SHOES :) What are they? Please, PLEASE do tell!!

I am all for the black and white jacket. Where did you find it? Also, can white pearls chunky or not, be worn year round???
Thanks :)

Thankyou for posting pictures of your outfits. You look awesome! I love each look but was awe struck by the second one with the Canelesque top and buckle booties! You are amazing and make it look so easy. After seeing your pictures I always wonder why I make it so difficult. You show style is easy and it’s fun.

I love them and i agree with Danja it’s fantastic when Angie posts piccies of herself in outfits x

I like both these looks but especially love the second one. I’m all over the edgy, Chanel-esque combo you’ve going going there.

I used to have some skinny zippered jeans years ago, from Topshop I think. I didn’t love them, but it was probably because they didn’t fit well otherwise. Love these ones on you, though!

These look great. Love your black drape-y blouse. I might just buy me a pair of these zippered skinnies.

You rock those zippered skinnies — the middle outfit has me levitating out of my chair and heading for a full orbit takeoff :) Thanks for the inspiration!

I think this line:

“Because they’re tighter, they’ve added a bit of curve to my legs which is a welcome change.”

…just swore me off of this look, and I don’t even have super curvy legs.

But, it’s cute on you!

I love it! I, too, reminisced about those zippers. I love these looks – they definitely make me want to give the jeans a try. I, too, love those yellow shoes!

Love love love the look! If I can find a pair to fit my size I’m definitely jumping on the bandwagon!

I absolutely adore both of those black tops as well. Beautiful.

Angie, I love your look in each of the pictures…Skinny jeans are just made for you…Please forgive me if I am asking a question that may have been answered in detail somewhere else, but here goes…what is the diff between skinny and straight?….Is one perferable to the other fashionwise?….Does one fit certain body types better than the other or are both accessible to all if you find the right cut?..
I love the look and am going to Nordies next week to look…

Angie, you look so fab in this that it’s even inspired an oldie like me. I actually tried on some of these at Kohls junior dept. (on sale right now) just to see how they looked and, to my eye, I think they created a wonderfully long-legged look. These had a really low rise and I’d rather find them with something higher plus finding the right pieces to wear on top, so it might not happen. Can you tell us where you found the ruffled black top in the first photo?

Posted on September 2nd, 2009 at 1:16 pm

Gosh Angie, you look amazing!!!! I hunted around for a pair of zipped leggings on the weekend, but I thought the zips looked cheap and plasticky on the pair I found. Seeing how good you look has made me think perhaps jeans rather than leggings would be the way to go. Don’t suppose you have seen any in black have you??

I love the zipper on these types of pants because they make it easier to slip your skinnies on and off. however, i must say i prefer to keep them fully zipped and kinda scrunched with flats, but slightly unzipped with ankle boots or say, a heeled oxford. just my personal preference. but you look fabulous!!

You indeed look fab! I know we’re talking about the jeans, but I really love those blazers, which is a ’40s and ’80s look I can totally get behind. And the jeans look great on you.

Thank you, ladies. Your kind words had me smiling all day.

Inge, I think I was a punk rocker in another life. I am *so* attracted to punk stuff, especially if I can mix up the look with pearls.

Maya, these zippered skinnies happen to be skin tight which makes my legs look curvier than usual. They are by J. Brand, which is a slim, snug and straight fit. Zippered skinnies by other brands are not nearly as tight.

Crutcher, skinny jeans are more tapered at the hems than straight leg jeans. The side seams fall “straight” down from the knee to the ankle. Straight legs are still more tapered than bootcuts which flare out a little.

Olar and Danja, my yellow low heeled pumps are from Nordstrom several years ago, and the buckled booties I bought in London several years ago too. I wear my shoes till they fall apart because they’re so hard to find.

Joy, the ruffled blouse was a Hong Kong purchase.

Tam, I haven’t seen black zippered jeans yet, but they are bound to turn up.

Wow wow wow…you look really *really* great. Awesome styling.
