Make an outfit instantly look and feel more Summery by adding white. It freshens things up, especially when contrasted with a bright or dark colour like black, navy, chocolate brown or grey. The effect is often eye-catching, which is why white acts like a bright, even though it’s a neutral.
Think of incorporating the following white items into ensembles as temperatures rise:
- White tops: They often need a camisole to make them look whiter and less see-through which is not ideal in sweltering weather, but it’s worth it if you’re in air conditioning. A white top accessorized with texture and contrast is flop proof.
- White bottoms: I’m a huge fan of white jeans, clamdiggers, pants and skirts. They are the perfect bridging piece as they make existing wardrobe items (like black tops) feel seasonally right. White bottoms do not make you look fat if the fit and fabric is fab.
- White camisoles: Where you would have opted for a black camisole, try using a white one instead. You’ll be surprised at how this one change can make a big difference.
- White outer layer: Consider white lightweight jackets, denim jackets or cardigans if you need a second layer. In order to prevent “the lab coat” effect, choose jackets with a contrasting button in black or a metal.
- White handbags and shoes: If you don’t like to wear white clothing, sport the colour through handbags and shoes instead. It packs instant punch.
- White accessories: Think white chunky beads, pendant, bracelet, watch, belt, earrings, specs and sunglasses when you’re adding Summer accessories to your look.
If you don’t like to wear optical white, choose a variation like off-white or cream. They work just as well. Also, you don’t need to be tanned to wear white next to your skin. I’m pale skinned and somehow wear white well. If you’re still not convinced, use it as a layering vehicle instead.

I’ve adored all things white and cream since I was little. There is something magically clean, crisp, sophisticated and cool about this neutral, which is why it holds a special place in my heart. Most of the time white is my black. I do lots of laundry because of my impractical obsession with white things, but it’s worth it.

I needed an excuse to replace a stained white denim jacket – thank you Angie!

Love white handbags and accessories. They look so fresh this time of year!

I bought white denim shorts and absolutely love them!

I love white and own many crisp white shirts – both basic and ornate. I also own 5 white camis – because I wear them at least twice a week and can never keep up with laundry enough. And it’s worth it. I find white works well all the year round too by pairing it with the right colors and jackets, etc.

I love wearing white in the summer and am willing to use oxy-clean on my clams just so I can wear them around my kids!
I’d love to get a white watch too. So pretty! I’ve been wearing an older watch the last few days and enjoy handily knowing the time.

I agree, Angie- I ge tons of use out of my white tanks and camis too as layering pieces!

I too enjoy wearing white. My white jeans are a staple and white tops are go to, especially for summer. In the heat I wear them in cotton lawn, cotton/silk and cotton/linen fabrications.
To your point Angie, I am fair skinned and look fine in white & cream both. Nor do I feel white jeans make me look any bigger on the bottom.

I agree completely, and am doing more and more white with each passing summer. Angie, do you feel like this emphasis on white – especially bottoms – is new? It feels new to me, but I haven’t been tracking trends ALL that long and could be totally wrong!

I love white too, but how can I best keep it clean and crisp as it should be? I know to wash promptly with like colours in cool water, but stains often seem to appear after I have laundered. I think some sunscreens can also stain or discolour white clothes. Is there some additive other than bleach that can help? (I try to use all biodegradable/”green” detergents and cleaning agents)
Thanks!

I still maintain that black looks best on me, but black and white is a combination made in heaven. I love wearing my black trench with my white pash, and I have white pants, clams, and a white cross body bag all on my wish list.
I bought a white cami, thinking it would be a versatile option, but whenever I try to swap it in place of a black one, I feel that it is too dominating and bright. I want my camis to simply act as a coverup, not to draw attention to themselves, and white projects while black recedes. I think I just don’t have the right tops for it, but it does come in handy under white tops that are too transparent. Unfortunately no matter how hot it gets, almost all of my tops require a cami, as cleavage is simply unavoidable at my size.

I love the look of white, especially in the summer. However, I don’t wear a lot of white for some reason, although it looks good on me. Part of it is fear of dirt (2 kids = 4 grubby hands). Other is the transparency issue, with both tops and pants. I do have a white cami though, so that’s a start!

I just realized that I don’t have white pants. But we’re having a rainy summer so buying them now might not be the best idea.

You are right on, Angie. I wore white pants with a white, black and yellow print top and black V cardi today and feel quite summery.
Cricket, thanks for the tip on Oxyclean for the white denim.
Joni, I found the Tide Pen works very well for stains on white or colors.

I just love this site! I learn so much. Anyone have a suggestion where I can buy a white denim jacket? I also love to wear white and would feel my summer wardrobe was complete if only for a white denim jacket…….

I got a cute white denim jacket at Target awhile back! It is fitted and the sleeves are long enough on me!
Yay for white! It looks so fresh to me. Thanks Angie for helping us wear it well.

I have 4 white shirts that just hang in my closet lonely. I’m sure if I get the right colors for cardigans or vest, or even scarves, I will be able to wear them without feeling like a beacon of light.
I also am waiting for the BR white jeans that I ordered. I haven’t worn white pants for ages but I am going to give them a try again. Now that I know more about layering I feel I should be able to incorporate white into my wardrobe.
Thanks for the encouragment Angie.

Cream kills my coloring, so there is only white for me – the sharp snow-white, not the yellowish bone-white. I love it. I don’t love the eternal washing process, though, especially with white jeans. XD Maybe I’m a pig, but I don’t wash my jeans every day. Not an option with white jeans in the city.
I also love crisp white shirts – not knits but wovens.
Not much into white accessories, white leather gets out of shape really fast. Besides, I prefer the look of slightly metallic shoes and bags with white (and cream) outfits.

I love white!!! In Houston, there have been tons of all-white parties. The looks is so elegant and glam. Looks good in pics too. I have a pair of white bootcut jeans. Looks great with a coral, turquiose or citron top. I am skeptical on white shoes. They look shoddy too quickly. I prefer a nude shoe to elongate my frame. I am 5′2.

I have a white outfit posted today.
http://fashionafterforty.blogs.....er-20.html
I rarely wear it together, but I was challenged to find something under $20.00 I like to break the white up with other colors, then it is more striking.

I’m all for it too! I bought a white belted blazer (no contrasting buttons though) on sale at the end of Summer last year, and didn’t even get a chance to wear it. I hope I’ll be able to remedy that soon.
It’s probably just me, but I quite like pairing white with something striped, feels very Parisian to me, but maybe I should curb my stripey enthusiasm, I don’t want to be mistaken for a sailor;-)

I wore a white linen skirt today…and I am embarrassed by the number of white blouses in my closet. It’s bad.

For me, the summer staple I couldn’t live without are my white cotton palazzo’s. Perfect cut for my pear shape.
Around my face though, because my palette is warmer rather than cool (too many years on the beach and with Italian heritage) my whites must have a hint of ‘red’ in them rather than cool, crisp ‘blue’ white which brings out dark circles under my eyes and I look 5 years older!

I’m so happy to see that others love white wardrobe goodies just like me. There is no substitute. White makes most Summer outfits look seasonally right.
Sal, white bottoms have been around for a while. They are a staple in Europe every season, especially in linen. White bottoms were huge in the 60’s and 80’s. They seemed to have lost their momentum in the 90’s, but the last decade has been full swing white bottoms all over again. I’m thrilled. A white pair of jeans is one of my all time favourite looks for warm weather.
Joni, oxyclean works wonders and so does Tilex.
Meream, if I let the rain stop me from wearing white jeans, I’d hardly ever be able to wear them
Lisa, Old Navy, Target and J Crew have great white denim jackets in at the moment. Eddie Bauer does too but I’m not sure of their fit this season.
Inge, hope you debut your white jacket soon.

Now that I’m a redhead I love white! It’s the first time I’ve ever really been able to wear it, since I was formerly a pale blonde and it’d wash me out.
My summer “white” staple are a great fitting pair of white trousers. There’s nothing like having the perfect pair, topped with a bold color shirt or tank or blouse.
