March 24th, 2009
Today is the third installment in my quest to hold out as long as possible with my existing Spring wardrobe, only indulging myself with new accessories that liven up my wardrobe and lift my spirits (refresh your memory with the first two installments here and here).
I’m not particularly partial to florals on fabric unless they’re abstract patterns, but I love floral motifs on accessories. So my heart skipped a beat when I saw this turquoise belt. It was the perfect way to add this season’s it colour to my wardrobe without breaking the bank.
I’m amazed at the versatility of this belt. It works well over last season’s knitwear, blouses and dresses, and it’s going to work equally well over old jackets, knitted tops and basic button downs. I could easily wear this belt with different outfits every day for two consecutive weeks without feeling bored.
I love turquoise with white, yellow, green and red, but can’t help reliving my 80’s memories by wearing it with bright pink. With my current frames the turquoise belt picks up the turquoise on the inside of my specs. I love that. It’s an interesting, subtle detail that will make me want to wear this belt more frequently.

This belt is bold, so in most instances I don’t wear it with other accessories that make a big statement. Only my watch, wedding band, specs and handbag. My chunky pearls work when I incorporate a plain white shirt or blouse, but that’s it. I don’t want to look like Christmas tree.
Belts are not for everyone and the ornate integrity of this style might rule it out for you. But I love them and this one is true to my individual style. It’s modern, retro, trendy, professional and fun at the same time. If you’re a belt wearer, adding a new belt each season is a cost effective way to look and feel fashionably refreshed.
I got particularly lucky with the price of this surprisingly well made belt. One would expect an accessory in this price range to look cheap and nasty, but it doesn’t. It’s virtually an exact copy of the belt styles Anne Fontaine had in her collection last Spring, which cost $300 a pop. Mine cost $34. Fabulous. It passes quality AND budget control.

LOVE this belt…. especially with the white shirt! Where is it from?

You have outdone yourself with this series! Everything you’ve shown, from scarves to belts, has been so practical and stylish. Thank you to Greg for the beautiful photos, and to Angie for showing us how to update our looks while staying on budget. Hurrah!

What a fabulous belt, Angie! At first, I thought it WAS the Anne Fontaine belt. I have been ogling it for a while in either black or white. J. Crew has some interesting floral accessories out right now, and I have been on the hunt for some flower accent sandals for this summer.
Great post! I love seeing your outfits–can’t wait for more!

Absolutely LOVE it, Angie- and that floral dress you’re wearing!

If anyone is so inclined, here is a budget-priced alternative, available in black, cream, pink and red:

Oh my gosh, the belt is gorgeous. And what a treat to see you in the HK dress!!!

Thank you, Tanya, Laura and RSRP. It helps that Greg is an excellent photographer.
Well done, Pat! Those are fantastic floral belt examples and thanks for sharing them with us. Great prices. I hope the quality is nice too. I bought mine at Macys and they had them in black and pink as well.
I’ve seen the ones you’re speaking of at J.Crew Ana and they’re awfully sweet. If it’s your thing, I hope you all get a fun floral belt to liven up your Spring wardrobe.

How pretty! I love it. I’m not inclined to wear bright colored clothing, but something like this is totally up my alley. I love your dress too, Angie. I’ll definitely check out Macys, JCrew, and the other links listed above.

All the ways you wear the belt are beautiful, and I love seeing how you combine color and patterns. I love the outfit with the white shirt and denim skirt. It is simple but interesting and elegant.
I want one!

Oh, and the view of your wall of bookshelves is also lovely. I’ll buy a new book any day.
Posted on March 24th, 2009 at 8:57 am
Oh Angie, you are too cute! I’m with Cricket, my favorite is the denim skirt and white shirt and I love your wall of books.
Your pictures are so helpful to me. If I had seen that belt in the store it would have caught my attention but I would never have purchased it because I wouldn’t know how to pull it off.

Sarah! I’ve often seen you wear bright colours and you wear them well. What have I missed? Is it your preference to wear neutrals with bright accessories instead? I sport that look a lot too. Cricket puts it well: “it’s simple but interesting and elegant”. (BTW Cricket, books are one of our weaknesses).
Antje, it’s finally warming up for dresses if I layer them with cardigans, jackets or a trench and add hose. I know that’s right up your alley too. Yay dresses! (Anyone spot our adorable Rosie?)

Rosie is so cute and funny.
I love all of your outfits but especially love your floral print dress. Oh I wish I had your pizzaz.
Posted on March 24th, 2009 at 9:27 am
I’m another one who keeps eyeing the books in the background
I love the belt you’re wearing, Angie, and the ones in the links from Pat. Very fun! And a way to spruce up the heavier clothes that are still needed this season where the weather changes at least once a day, if not more.

Hi Rosie! I do wear bright colors from time to time, Angie, but it is my preference to wear neutrals or muted colors. I try not to ever say “I won’t” or “I don’t”. You never know….

That is a great belt! I love the flower detail. Thanks for sharing all these great ideas for updating spring wardrobes. I’m ready to do some shopping for spring and these posts have really helped. Thanks again!
I did spot Rosie. It’s so cute how she peeks out from behind you.

Hi Rosie!
The best part of these pictures is seeing your wonderful style, Angie! Thank you very much. The belt is really fantastic. I am experimenting with pinning brooches to my belts (inspired by your previous post with the black belt with flower detail.) Nothing as glamorous, but works for my budget-friendly style! Thanks for the inspiration, I hope you won’t be offended: imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I will post pictures on the forum at the end of the week.
Posted on March 24th, 2009 at 10:25 am
Thank you for this post and the wonderful updating idea. Like others have mentioned, your photos are so valuable as guides for pulling this off. Now I’d like to try. BAP (Before Angie’s Photos) I’d never have considered it for myself.

Great outfits and color combos, Angie! I also like the denim skirt outfit – so simple and fresh for spring.
As a short-waisted, long-legged, inverted triangle, I feel that I cannot take advantage of belts. Boo-hoo! Is this true? How could I do the shirt/denim skirt combo, for example?
Also, I noticed that you gave no response to the posters who asked specifically where you found your belt. Is it your policy to not share where you find your items? Or did you miss their inquiries? I’m not being snarky, I’m asking seriously to set the record straight – for my own information, as well as for others. Thank you so much for everything. : )

I’m taking a second look and notice you don’t wear the belt tight, but looser and at a slight angle. Would that help a belt work better for my rectangle shape?
Lesley, I think Angie posted about mid-way down the comments that she got it at Macy’s.

How do you resist turning around and kissing that little doggy face? Whenever my cat is within a 5 yard radius I am drawn to her like a magnet and feel compelled to at least squeeze in a pat on the head.
This is my favorite new piece you have posted yet and also my favorite set of outfits, especially that dress. Really makes me wish I could wear belts
Perhaps it’s for the best: this way there is no temptation. I will just enjoy them on you, Ana, Tanya, and all the other belt ladies.

Lesley, you missed my earlier, first comment where I mentioned that I bought the belt at Macys. (Thanks for pointing that out Cricket). YLF is about sharing and I will always offer information if I can help out. I hope that sets the record straight. To answer your body type belting question, my suggestion is to start a thread on the YLF forum. You’ll get a whole slew of useful responses that way.
Cricket, I don’t tie my belts too tight because I feel it gives my straight-ish body a little more curve. Does that make sense? It might work for you too.
Bella, I am absolutely flattered that a stylish lass like you is inspired by my belt idea. I can’t wait to see your creative version.
Maya, there is PLENTY of kissing and patting of puppies going on during photo shoots. Poor Greg. He is so patient.

Sublime outfits and colors! I love the belt, and how it adds to each outfit.
Posted on March 24th, 2009 at 11:33 am
Oh that belt is so fun! And I’m trying to be like you. I went through my entire wadrobe yestrday. I went and picked up the few foundational things I needed (a black pencil skirt and a neutral cardigan) and I told myself I don’t need to buy anything else unless I absolutely have to. We’ll see how long that will last…
Posted on March 24th, 2009 at 11:50 am
The belt is fantastic! I have also been a sucker for floral accessories lately. I bought a pair of sandals and I’ve got a yellow belt from last year with flowers.

Rosie is so sweet.
I love the belt but I LOVE the dress. Where is it from/who is it by? Love, love, love. And your glasses are awesome, Angie. I love that they have turquoise on the inside part of the frames.

The belt is lovely and you look great. I doubt I could find anything like this but I’ll look out! I have to get used to the idea of spending as much on an accessory as an item of clothing! ( I know $34 is cheap for what it is, but I would hesitate to spend that on a blouse) But seeing how much you are saving by not buying clothes and updating with accessories is informative.

Also, you’d have to be VERY confident of your waistline to pull this off – which you can be Angie!
Posted on March 24th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
It looks adorable on you Angie
Posted on March 24th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
dwj, that’s great. Keep us posted on how long you last. I’ll do the same.
Thanks, Brianna, Caramel Blondie and Anne. I bought the dress in Hong Kong last year, in a little shop that wasn’t very expensive. It’s my favourite dress at the moment. Retro and modern at the same time.
Carissa, thanks for the compliment, but I’m nowhere near as cute as Rosie

Angie that belt looks amazing on you. And you have paired it with 3 very different outfits. The dress is simply stunning on you, but for some reason the simpler outfit with the plain white shirt makes it stand out even more. Love the look!!!
Posted on March 25th, 2009 at 3:47 am
It really is amazing what an impact an accessory can have. The first thing I thought when I saw the pictures was ‘oh, does Angie have new specs’? The belt really brings out the turquoise in your glasses.
And it’s such a beautiful belt! My personal favourite is also the white shirt – denim skirt combo. But the other two outfits are stunning as well. (you already know I love that dress, and the jumper is gorgeous too).
Posted on March 25th, 2009 at 5:23 am
I love that belt! I might have to make a trip to Macy’s sometime soon.
Posted on March 25th, 2009 at 6:45 am
Thanks Inge and Tam. There’s just something magical about a white button down shirt. You know I’m a huge fan.
Diana, hope the belt works out.
Posted on March 25th, 2009 at 7:09 am
What a great belt! It’s unusual and feminine at the same time. I think I like the outfit best where you had it on with the white shirt, red bag, and denim skirt.
Because my waist is still too large for me to be wearing belts and calling attention to it, I’m not wearing belts yet, and I miss them.
