Creative and Polished Mum-on-the-Go

Cynthia Yang (44) is a full-time Mum of three girls in the Metro Detroit area who writes about fashion, food, fitness and everything in between on her blog My Rose Colored Shades. Our blogger loves skinnies, colour, pattern and heels, which she switches up with flats and sneakers. Her style is creative, fun, polished, practical and relatable. She enjoys mixing trends with Modern Classics, and likes to add a bit of urban edge here and there.

“It’s been a gradual process but I’ve learned to let go of silly fashion rules that have been ingrained in my head ever since fashion became part of my vocabulary. I’ve been able to break out of those constraints and take risks, more so in the last five years than ever before. In the process, I’ve realized that having a sense of style is not about following rules but about being comfortable enough in your skin that you are able to honestly understand what shapes and colors highlight your best features, inside and out. At the very core, my style has always been classic, minimalist and selectively trendy.”

A stylish and easy-to-throw-on outfit that gets its pizzazz from the fun colour combo and plaid scarf. Tucking the high-contrast chambray shirt into coated skinny jeans lengthens the leg line. Popping over a hip-length blazer with sleek lines also enhances the vertical integrity of this look. The camel colour looks chic against the light blue, and dresses up this casual outfit. The waxed skinnies add textural interest and a touch of rock ‘n’ roll. There’s some subtle pattern mixing going on with the plaid scarf and leopard print pumps. A simple, dark blue satchel and Cynthia’s trademark rose-coloured shades are the finishing touches.

Polish and hard edge-lite go together seamlessly in this monochromatic skirt look. The exposed asymmetric zipper, leather panel and cut-away detailing transform the Modern Classic skirt into a trendy hard-edged rendition. Cynthia further plays up the hard-edge vibe by accessorizing with a large black tote and sporting black caged wedge sandals with gold hardware. The cut-outs and shorter skirt length create a long lean line. Opting for a relatively unstructured popover shirt in a drapey fabric softens the outfit. The blue and white stripe adds a fun, preppy juxtaposition. Dainty jewellery and Cynthia’s hair worn down provide further feminine softness.

Cheeky Sporty Luxe with feminine charm. The slouchy navy cargo pants are the perfect length on our 5′ 4″ blogger. Together with the slim, sharp-shouldered schoolboy blazer and striped pullover they are the tomboy elements in this look. The moss green with white stripe sweater is unexpected against the navy. And don’t you just love the navy trim around the collar. Such a great touch. Throwing in a croc-embossed tomato red clutch and heels adds ladylike vivacity. Cynthia has an impressive shoe collection, and these red studded criss-cross ankle strap pumps work great with the elasticated pant hems. A simple lariat necklace and dainty bracelet echo the preppy gold buttons on the blazer.

Cynthia looks terrific in these denim-y shades of blue. For a relaxed weekend look she’s wearing distressed boyfriend jeans with a pale blue denim popover shirt. The dark trim on the shirt creates outfit depth. Rolling the jeans showcases girly pointy toe flats. The blush colour and criss-cross straps give them a sweet ballerina-esque vibe. The webbing striped belt adds a playful preppy touch. Our blogger is also mixing metals with three bracelets, two necklaces and earrings. The pendant mimics the shape of the earrings, and by keeping all the pieces dainty and refined there’s no visual overload.

Cynthia has a knack for putting together stylish and on trend outfits that are practical for an always busy Mum-on-the-Go. Here are her top two tips for achieving this:

“I think the key to looking stylish and on trend without being a fashion victim, is to anchor your outfit with at least one item that you’re completely comfortable and confident in. I would never wear an outfit that’s out of my comfort zone from head to toe. If I did, I would probably feel like a fashion clown on display and wouldn’t be able to pull it off. For example, if I’m trying a trendy color that’s not an every day color for me, I’ll work it in via accents and accessories at first. If I’m trying to mix a set of patterns and textures for the first time, then I’ll make sure there is a cohesiveness in the colors that makes me comfortable. Be realistic about your lifestyle and determine how you can incorporate a trend in a way that works for you, and if it doesn’t work, don’t wear it.”

This is a fab example of how to wear a statement dress two different ways! Pairing the painted plaid dress with a long cascading cardigan with subtle ruffles emphasizes the beautiful asymmetric lines of the frock. Adding accessories in earthy tones like the braided leather belt and light brown booties makes for a great casual country chic look. Switch out the cardi for a sharp-shouldered tuxedo blazer, blue booties and a vivid royal blue clutch and you get a dressy and sharp city look. Also note how the round pendant in the first look adds softness that matches the relaxed vibe of the outfit, whereas the spike pendant in look two accentuates the urban edge.

This is my favourite outfit because the sage green with blue and black has stolen my heart. You don’t see sage green all that often, and it’s very flattering on our blogger. Cynthia is sporting a casual leggings with tunic sweater combination that is both practical and relatable. The moto and zipper detailing on the scuba leggings create hard edge and tonal texture. They also complement our blogger’s black hair. The chunky knit sweater with oversized collar adds more textural interest, and adds back some softness. The denim-y blue colour of the pointy toe stacked heel ankle boots is an unexpected choice, but it works beautifully with the sage green. A silver pendant and classic black strap watch are the accessories of choice. Finally, the relaxed, bright blue satchel ties it all together.

Polished Boho with Snakeskin Booties

A new outfit from Alexandra Grant of To Vogue or Bust, who we introduced to YLF in November 2014.

The white jeans and eye-catching snakeskin ankle boots are the stars of this texture-rich polished boho look. Alexandra has layered a black tee under a shorter light grey sweater. This creates horizontally cutting lines across the body, which she balances out by popping over a long grey coat in a false plain. Sporting low-contrast high-vamped footwear further lengthens the leg line by visually joining the foot to the jeans. The Western-style ankle boots, slouchy woven leather bag, relaxed layering, and Alexandra’s wide-brimmed felt hat and loose locks bring a boho-lite vibe to this look. The crisp skinnies and our blogger’s impeccable make-up add effective polish.

The Levi’s 501: Then and Now

Levi’s 501s go down as one of the most iconic pairs of jeans of all time. The style has a rich history spanning 140 years, but it had a period of unprecedented popularity from the late ‘80s to the mid ‘90s. By 1999, Time Magazine had named 501s the clothing item of the century They had a uniquely unisex fit. The rise was lower than what we were used to in the ‘80s. The roomy waist, which you reined in with a belt, was a new concept. As was the roomy crotch point whisker. Gals with boyish bodies looked particularly good in 501s because they were men’s jeans

Thinking back to 1991 when I wore my first pair at age 21, I remember feeling invincible in them. I felt like I had finally made it in life. They were expensive outside of the US, so I had to save up my waitressing pennies to purchase a pair, which were black and not blue. Ooooh, how I loved them. And I loved that Greg wore the same style of jeans as me in a different waist and length measurement.

501s lost their momentum at the turn of the century in favour of the new bootcut with a little stretch. Premium denim brands were launched shortly after that, and before long the era of the 501 for women was over. I believe the style stayed popular with men for much longer, which I guess makes sense because they’re men’s jeans.

Levi’s recently revamped the iconic jeans style, calling the line the 501 CT. The CT stands for “Customized and Tapered”. Apparently, tapering the legs of the original 501 was a very popular alteration. This prompted Levi’s to do it for us, thereby changing the original fit of the jeans.

Although the fit of the new 501s has changed, its wide waist, 100% cotton fabrication, relaxed through the thigh fit, and button fly remain the same. Furthermore, because people wore the original 501s both in fitted and baggy silhouettes, Levis encourages you to purchase the style in the size that best reflects the way YOU want to wear them. Size down for a slim and modern fit. Wear your regular size for a classic fit. And size up for a very relaxed fit. Watch this video for a visual explanation.

I look at the new 501s and my emotions are torn. Part of me really wants to wear them because of their nostalgic integrity. Personally, I think it’s fun to wear trends a second time round when they held a special meaning to you. Perhaps Greg and I could wear matching pairs again. On the other hand, they are basically another pair of boyfriend jeans, which I have already worn extensively over the last three years. If it were a year ago, I’d probably have a pair of the new 501s already. But I’m weaning myself off the style in favour of straight legs and silhouettes that are more fitted on the bottom. As Levi’s suggests, I might try sizing down in the style to see how I like the way those fit. But for now, I’ve had my fill of big and baggy boyfriend jeans.

Over to you. Did you wear 501s back in the day? What do you think of the new customized and tapered design feature, and would you wear them again?

Tomato & Turquoise for Spring

My style is shifting, and although I don’t have a clear picture of exactly where I want it to go, I know I want a bit of change. First, I’m not enjoying the spike in my hair as much as before, so I’ve been wearing it flat and back with a cowlick sometimes. While I figure out what to do, I’m growing the top a little so that I have more to play with.

I also feel that my style has been quite tomboy over the last year. Lots of boyfriend jeans with crisp men’s shirts, blazers, motos, baggy knitwear, belts and flat boyish shoes can do that, especially when you don’t wear jewellery, stick to flats, and have super short hair. It’s not that I want to start wearing skirts, dresses and heels more often. Nor do I want to add jewellery to my outfits or wear my hair long. It’s more about amping up the feminine integrity of my outfits with tailoring, visible softness and pretty items.

Coat Side

This outfit is a step in that direction. I wore it out to casual dinner with friends over the weekend, debuting a new pair of pants and bag that I bought on our recent trip to Hong Kong. The strong horizontal lines across the outfit created by the high-contrast colours, untucked pullover, and flats are not conventionally flattering. A tonal column, heels, and a tucked top would have accentuated the vertical integrity of the outfit. But these days, opting for looks that are just flattering enough is fashionable and quite liberating.

Coat Close

I pinned a picture of a model wearing a red pullover with a red coat a while ago because I wanted to create a similar tonal effect with my own old red Lady Metro coat from J.Crew. I eventually found a chunky turtleneck sweater in a fluid fit last season. I’ve enjoyed wearing the two pieces together like a modern twinset, especially since this is my year of tomato red.

The satin trousers from Massimo Dutti were an unexpected purchase because they are skinny. I don’t think I would have bought a skinny pair of jeans, but the same silhouette in a soft and pretty satin made the difference. They are feminine because they showcase my curves more than roomy jeans, which is in line with how I am feeling about my style shift. The fact that Greg loved them helped seal the deal.

Coat Shoulders

Coat Shoulder

The pants do not require a belt to stay up, which meant that I could wear the pullover untucked, plain and simple. Ordinarily I would have felt unfinished and sloppy sans belt, but the vivid colours of the outfit, the structure of the skinnies, and the satin finish of the pants makes the outfit feel dressier and sufficiently pulled together.

Coat Shoulder Close

Jumper Side

I so wanted to add a light blue bag to my bag capsule this year, but when I saw Furla’s Piper Medium Dome Satchel in a mid-tone turquoise, that was the right blue for me. I especially love it with tomato red, so that’s how I wore it on its first outing.

Bag Close

I finished off the outfit with flat white workhorse Calvin Klein mod booties because I like the unexpected pop of white, and LOVE the comfort of these shoes. I just duplicated them because fashionable shoes that go the distance are hard to find. (I walked Hong Kong flat in these trusty little darlings without a moment’s complaint.) The skinnies cover the shaft of the bootie, but that’s okay because the hem scrunch helps lengthen the leg line.

Jumper Full

The bright colour combination here makes me feel alive, happy and ready for Spring. The skinnies definitely make me feel more feminine. The non-spiky hair, although not as dramatic, feels more ladylike and right for now. The untucked sweater changes things up from wearing a belt with a partially tucked top. I’m feeling good about this small style refresh, and excited to see how things evolve through the year.
