Team Bold Lip, Bold Eye, or Both

We’re kicking off the week with your make-up preferences. You bat for Team Bold Lip if you prefer to accentuate your lips instead of your eyes by wearing bolder lipstick and wearing very light eye make-up (or leaving it off entirely.) You bat for Team Bold Eye if you prefer to accentuate your eyes with mascara, eyeliner and eyeshadow, and wear subtle and soft lipstick (or no lippie at all.) Or maybe you enjoy accentuating your eyes AND wearing bolder lipstick and bat for Team Both.

I LOVE wearing mascara and tightlining my lids, and use a bright blue in both beauty products. I have big eyes and long lashes so wearing eye make-up brings out those features. Wearing blue eye make-up makes my eyes look greener. I don’t wear eyeshadow at all. I wore it once to my high school dance in 1987 and that was that. Never again. I have defined arched brows that I shape with brown eyebrow pencil. Adding eyeshadow to the mix feels and looks like too much eye make-up, especially since I wear bright red specs daily.

I LOVE lipstick, but keep it very soft, light, and subtle so that you can barely see it. Half the time I stick to glossy lip balm keeping my lips their natural colour. I used to wear red lippie for formal events at night a couple of times a year but don’t do that anymore either. I bat for Team Bold Eye and leave my lips soft, shiny and almost free of colour.

Team Bold Eye! I am pretty fair overall, and without mascara and eyebrow pencil my eyes disappear from my face.

Team Bold Eye. I usually wear very little make up but I do accentuate my eyes. My eyes are blue/green and I like to bring out the colour with make up. I wear black mascara and dark brown eye liner. If I wear eyeshadow I wear natural colours that are matte. I tint my eyebrows brown. My lipsticks are all natural coloured.

Bold eye for me too! I have always worn eyeliner and mascara but rarely lipstick, except for lip balm. Lately I have started wearing very neutral, long-wearing lipstick that I like and don’t have to reapply often. Even that seems like too much sometimes

I’m happy to switch back and forth! Sometimes I wear just a light neutral shadow to even out the skintone, mascara and a red lipstain. Other tames, I wear a bit of shimmer and contour on the eyelid and a neutral lipstick. I work in people’s homes, or in my small teaching studio — mostly one on one. This means my makeup is more natural now. I need to look professional without making a client’s mom feel overmatched as she does the laundry while I conduct a therapy session with her child.

I love that you wore eyeshadow ONCE and that was that. That made me laugh and wonder “What happened?”

I generally go neutral with eyes- brow gel and mascara with a little neutral eyeshadow but sometimes go a little bolder with eyeliner.

I ALWAYS wear lipstick and liner too! I wouldn’t call it bold though. It’s just a shade darker than my natural lip color.

Team Bold Eye since my eyes are, I think, one of my best features. Typically I use just a little bit of taupe shadow, liner pencil (in plum or taupe), and (sometimes) black mascara. The eye liner is what makes the big difference in my eyes “popping” so that is the most important element.

Team Bold Lip! Very near sighted, can barely see my own eyes without my glasses. So all about the mouth. Bright red in my youth, now darker reds and pinks.

I’ve been trying to do better with make-up, and have been defining my brows now for over a year. That and two coats of mascara is my eye routine. Sometimes a line of plum shadow at the outside corner of my eyes. Lippy is low key. So, steam bold eyes.

I was amazed that no makeup artist ever put eyeshadow on you. You know what you like. I am more experimental. As a green eyed blond, I always at least wear mascara. As I’ve gotten older I am wearing more eyeshadow to define my eyes and help them show up, since I wear glasses. I am team bolder eye. I love lip products, but usually end up with a very soft lip.

I know I’m on Team Bold Eye, but not sure about Team Bold Lip. I always have color on my lips, but it varies from red (different shades) to bright or deep pink to coral to (occasionally) a pinky-mauve. Is that bold enough? I definitely feel I look sick without some kind of lip color!

Bold Eye is no question, though. I have hooded lids, and my eyes are a little small and oval and close to together. So I always wear eyeliner: A very thin line on the top lid itself, and a pretty bold wing to open them up and move them out. (I finally figured out a technique for placing the wing correctly on hooded lids!) I always use mascara as well, and usually eyeshadow. Again because of the hooded lids, I concentrate the shadow on the outer part of my eye, where the crease would be if I had one, and up on the lower part of the brow bone. Combined with the liner, this seems to set off my eyes fairly well.

Eyes. I wear distinctive eye glass frames and my eyes are my best feature, so I emphasize them. I wear tinted balm on my lips.

I wear mascara and lipstick, but neither are bold. No eyeshadow or liner because they just don’t do much for my small eyes. My lip color is always soft and neutral. So team neither/ natural?

I’m back on Team Bold Eye after a 2 year absence. I have an autoimmune condition that affected the appearance of my eyes so I stopped wearing any type of eye makeup, However, I always kept and still keep my eyebrows groomed and tinted After a lenghty period of medical treatment, my eyes are much improved in appearance and I’m wearing matte eye shadow…especially pink, plum and copper shades, as well as mascara.

Team Both – it is lonely here, so Ginger I am putting you on my team!

I usually wear bright lipstick and have since my teens. I did go through a phase in the late 90’s of wearing natural lipstick and all my friends freaked out “where is the red lipstick??” a bright lip is signature for me. Eye make-up – well I wear eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara daily. I love eye shadow palettes and playing with different colours and smokey eye effects. Liquid eyeliner I reserve for going out and special occasions. But I like my eyes and lips to be balanced.

In my teens, I worked on a cosmetic counter whilst attending university, I just love make-up and everything about it. I am one of those people that finds it relaxing and my “me time” to do my hair, skincare and make-up in the morning. I confounded my uni friends to show up to exams, made-up and dressed up. For me it helped settle my nerves and feel in control, ready to perform at my best. Rolling out of bed and popping on a track suit would have negatively impacted my performance.

I do both, though my “bold” lip is really a lighter neutral shade. It just looks more pronounced against my pale skin.

Because I have both light skin and light eyes, I can look a bit embryonic without eye makeup.

Team both. I don’t usually do both at the same time, so most days I do my eyes/brows and a subtle lip. Some days call for red lips, though, and I try to do less eye makeup when I’m in that mood.

My Team has changed over the years from Bold Eye to Bold Lip. Mostly due to allergies that affect the eye area and discovering that a bold lip in the right color ( coral) can brighten the face, I have switched teams. I seldom use any eye makeup use a tinted moisturizer daily and a coral lipstick over Aquaphor, seldom bothering with lip liner.

I’m so merciful you added brows to the mix. Adding eyeshadow to brows which were shaped already with even only some light brown eyebrow pencil feels and looks sometimes like too much eye make-up to us fair blondes! (especially with bright specs). I can do one or max two but never the three of them all and like to switch between them, I have my periods.

I pretty much look like a fetus if I don’t wear eye makeup, due to short, light lashes and very light brows, so I bring out the full buffet of eye makeup for that area. I don’t forget the lips, though, and use neutral pinks there.

Bold eyes. I don’t wear shadow either . I’m eyeliner and mascara and will admit to strip lashes on occasion ….worn them off an on since the early 70’s, I have lashes but I like the drama

I’m team kind of bold lip. I need to visit the make-up counter and find more than one shade at a time that I love. (Time consuming and the associates get frustrated with me bc I’m so picky, lol.)

I was doing eyeliner and mascara, but for some reason my mascara started smearing even more lately, so I’m skipping eye make-up altogether. When I wear eye make up (to me it seems subtle compared to what I used to wear,) I’ll sometimes add a little champagne shimmer right in the high point of my eyebrow arch. It feels more polished.

I feel like I could write a book on my make-up history, starting with sneaking Barbie eye shadow in the 6th grade…so disastrous!

Bold lip-easier to put on and take off. My eyes are just so sensitive that I don’t like to put anything to close to them or tug on the skin. Plus I like the look of a red lip with a bare face. Kind of French chic.

I love the look of a bold lip but am not always in the mood to try it, and am not always sure it is such a good idea on my crooked lips. I have never used much eye makeup – but want to start. I am more interested in eye and lip makeup now than when I was younger and was mostly only interested in covering up my skin.

Team Bold Eye takes the lead. Team Bold Lip is not insignificant though, and Team Both is gaining momentum. Fascinating.

I wear make-up EVERY day too. I like how it adds polish, glam and shine to my style. I feel blessed not to be allergic to eye make-up because I would really miss it.

TammyB, my '80s loving self never wore eye shadow. That's quite an achievement. Laura – can you believe it!

Taylor, false lashes are a look for sure, and especially these days. I see lots of women with false lashes. Why not!

Bijou, you are fabulous! Doing your own thing and enjoying it. Love that.

Ginger, your full face of make-up works well with your style. Bijou too.

Bookwormmoran, make-up artists have tried to put eye-shadow on me, but I stopped them.

I wear dark brown mascara, enhance my eyebrows with brow pencil, and wear a fairly subtle lipstick on most days. Occasionally I will use a brown eyeliner and neutral matte eyeshadow in brown shades with an oyster highlighter.

Team bold eye. Since I’m aging, I don’t care for a bold lip, as I feel it makes me look overly harsh. But that’s me, I’m not judge-y if another woman “of a certain age” likes it.

With my fair complexion and gray hair I feel completely washed out without some makeup – but it’s subtle. Always define my eyebrows with soft brow color and mascara. I tried tightlining after learning about it here on YLF. I love the look but it’s too much trouble for daily wear. Always wear lip color too – again to brighten up my otherwise washed out coloring. Lip color ranges from medium red to pink.

I think I’m on Team Subdued. My natural coloring is blonde hair(now needs plenty of help getting there) with dark brows, dark brown eyes and pale skin. I feel like I already have enough contrast going on without adding to it. I do always try to wear mascara, eyeshadow to even out my eyelids and a fairly neutral lipstick to just add color back into my lips

Bold eye for me. Though it’s a bit of an overstatement since I keep even that fairly subtle with some eyeliner and mascara – both brown to match my brown eyes. I wear red specs and prefer my lips natural or very close to it.

I used to be bold eye but now I’m definitely bold lip. That is, on the incredibly rare occasion that I wear noticeable makeup. I’d like to wear a bold lip more often as I own a couple of really pretty lippies, but feel uncomfortable whe I’m the only visibly made up woman in the room :(. And I just don’t have formal occasions at this point in my life. Anyhow, a bold lip reads more modern to me, though of course bold eyes are timeless and often little works of art.

I can’t say that I necessarily go “bold” in either direction, but I do accent my eyes. From the time I was young, if I didn’t wear eye makeup people would ask me if I was tired or if everything was okay. So I’ve always felt I need a little something as far as eyeliner goes to make my eyes stand out more than they normally would.

I also love lipstick and buy far more than I need, but I almost always keep it “me, but better.” My lips tend to have color naturally, so I try to keep lip color to what is natural for me – generally those non-descript colors like “mauve” work best for me. So I probably actually apply more lipstick than eye makeup, but that’s just because it needs reapplication throughout the day.

I think I’m mostly team neither, but aspire to team bold eye if I had to choose. My mouth and lips are pretty full and tend to get flaky. I stick to lip balms with some sheen – never really mastered lipstick, though I love it on others. Favorite lip products: Clinique All About Lips for the flakes and Clinique Superbalm. And Supergoop lip balm with SPF for sun protection.

I do wear brown mascara everyday, but think I could use a little more oomph. I want to start experimenting with more eye makeup – it’s on my to-do list! I’m intrigued by tightlining.

I wear mascara, brow pencil, eyeliner most days and lipstick, too. But none are especially bold. Rarely rarely rarely I will add eyeshadow (maybe once a year) and a slightly brighter lip.

For many years, I was Team Bold Eye.

Now I am Team Both, as seldom want to be seen without mascara and lipstick. I often wear eyeliner as well, and, for special occasions, even more eye makeup, and in most cases, I prefer my lipstick to be visible.

Sometimes, I’m Team Bold Lip. When you wear bold glasses, as I do, in some more casual settings, you often just need a bold lip to make your face look balanced, polished and alive.

Angie – I’ve got, what, almost 10 years on you? Most women start to lose definition and colour in their lips with age. A little contouring-type liner goes a long way toward redefining one’s lips. I never wore it either when I was your age

I’m mostly team natural eye and natural lip but if I’m going to wear makeup for a professional or dress up event, I’m team bold eye. My lips are not very wide or full and to me bright lipstick looks out of place. My favorite lippy was discontinued. A Revlon color called Rosy nude. I still have two tubes I bought on ebay.

TEAM BOLD LIP! i have epicanthic folds so eye makeup never did anything for me anyway. now that i’m older, i finally have “eye creases” i.e., wrinkles… yay? i basically wear glasses as eye makeup + concealer (☉‿☉✿)

I’m on Team Bold Eye year round. I use an eye brow pencil, mascara and eyeliner daily. No eye shadow for me. From the end of August to the end of June I am on Team Bold for Both Eyes and Lips. I wear dark, saturated lip colors in shades of red, berry, copper and brown.

My approach is very similar to yours, Angie. A bolder eye and subtle lips. I have started in the last couple of years to fill in my slowly thinning brows with a bit of pencil, and I use a soft pencil eyeliner and mascara most days. Only on occasions do I use eyeshadow too — I still have the eyeshadows I wore for my wedding 16 years ago.

I look totally wrong in dark or bright lip color, so I keep my lips subtle with a shade close to my natural color.

I’m decidedly a switch hitter. I don’t go super bold with my eyes, but I do go bold and then add a subtle lip, but I also love a bold lip and clean, fresh eye with crisp tightlining or minimal liquid liner.

Team both – but not at the same time. I like how a dark(er) lip makes my teeth look brighter (I am a coffee addict), but I look half-dead without at least a little eye makeup, and I never leave home without my brows!

Team ‘A Bit Of Both’? I wear mascara every day as mine are almost invisible. I have my sparse(oh how I curse those 70s tweezers)eyebrows tinted and styled every month. Occasionally I try tightlining but somewhat amateurish. Sometimes neutral eyeshadows on my quite deepset eyes. Link rose or mauve pink lipstick. So I guess I am pretty much nondescript in both!

Probably bold eye, though I don’t feel it’s really all that bold. I define my brows and use eyeshadow, liner and mascara every day. I go for fairly subdued shades, though, and what I think is a light application (compared to how it looks when I have it done at the makeup counter!). I used to wear at least medium-dark lip color as well, but a bike accident last winter left scarring on my upper lip, so it is now kind of lumpy. It doesn’t really show, but it makes lipstick a bit awkward to apply, so I’ve been sticking to much more subtle colors since then. I don’t think they are as flattering to me, but I am more comfortable drawing less attention to the lip for now.

Team bit ‘o both also here. I like defining my eyes but lately even waterproof mascara ends up smudging under my eyes. I also wear glasses, love to switch up my frames, and I had my disappeared eyebrows microbladed. Defined eyebrows and glasses frames seem to have almost the same effect as makeup in highlighting my eyes, so a brighter lip completes a polished look for me!

Team Lip, which may or may not be bold. My daily makeup takes less than one minute and involves concealer in 3 tiny areas, powder over those, light blusher, and lipstick from the tube, my favourite is a MLBB colour but I do like red, coral or pink to match some clothing.
As my eyes get older and more hooded, I don’t seem to want to emphasise them so I only occasionally wear a tiny bit of eyeshadow and mascara. No eyeliner or eyebrow pencil which I don’t even own.

Love make up! Wear it all and everyday. Hopefully not too much at one time! I like to tight line my eyes and wear a neutral brown shadow and mascara. Tinted moisturizer and concealer where needed and blush to go with lips. Line my lips and wear a lipstick that goes with whatever color I am wearing that day. I used to love to wear a bright red but now I find it too aging and go for a soft red. Always have my eye out for the perfect red! Most often I wear a shade of pink. It amazes me how many shades of pink lipstick I have. Have a make up table with everything organized and easy to find so I can do it all in 10 minutes.

Though sometimes I’ve been doing a silver liquid eyeliner, under my eyes and extending out as a cat eye. I’ve gotten more than one compliment on it

I need to do both eyes and lips. As I’ve gotten older and let my hair go grey, color has also faded from my face. My features need definition. So I fill in my eyebrows, line eyes, and apply mascara after a very sheer wash of shadow to conceal eyelid discoloration. And I enjoy a bold lip, but try to stay away from a harsh look.

I’m on team Bold Lip! I usually wear no makeup at all, but when I feel like my face needs a pick-me-up, I always reach for the bright lipstick. Red or burgundy on evening special occasions, coral in the summer, mauve in the winter.

In my youthful years it was all about a bold lip, since my lashes and brows were plush, and my skin was plump and firm without much help. Now it’s the reverse – bolder eyes and a subtle lip. There is some discoloration of my eyelids, my lashes are shorter and sparser, my brows are fading….. I don’t exist without putting on eyes!

My lips have the teeny lines that lipstick likes to bleed into, so I keep the lipstick light but lively now. Plus it looks a lot less harsh, but I do miss the bolder shades.

I find that wearing my glasses with no eye makeup and my usual lip color is perfect for getting out the door in a hurry. Eyeglasses are magical at disguising un-madeup eyes!

Team bold lip. I’ve always loved lipstick, and really enjoy wearing it. I tend to sport a lighter lippie in summer and stick to the pinks and pinky-browns. Plus a hot orange. Always a bright summer orange. My deeper, bolder colors and a broad palette of reds I reserve for fall/winter.

My eyes stay pretty unmade up with the exception of brow makeup. I love a beautiful brow, and I almost never leave the house without defining my brows. I’m indifferent about the larger world of eye makeup. There are just too many types available and and I can’t muster enough enthusiasm to experiment. I actively dislike the feel of mascara on my lashes—though I like the look—so I rarely wear it.

I’d be interested in that Lisa P – my lips are fading to the point where I would like some more colour, but I’m not good at reapplying lipstick. I have a natural-looking pencil I’ve been wanting to try.

Team boldeye, although sometimes I am a slacker on eye makeup. Always brow pencil to define the shape subtly. I have been in search of a good Red lipstick but have kind of given up on looking. It seems too clownish for me. And I am fine with the red lipstick I bought at the dollar store (!) to experiment. Someone told me L’Oréal makes the dollar store lipstick! not sure that’s true but worth a shot buying one and it seems just fine! I digress. Usually a soft lip and mascara. And if I am dollying up I will add brown eyeshadow.

Team Bold Lip. My monolidded Asian eyes are already distinctive and a bold eye wears me rather than the other way round, and in any case smears quickly. Also as I age, my lips need more colour and definition.

What Kathleen said. Team both when I am at work. I have a black uniform now so wearing color on my lips AND my eyes is essential. I have a pink lip color that is one of those long lasting types. They do last but dry out quickly so I am constantly reapplying lip gloss. I do not wear foundation or BB cream though. Sometimes a bit of powder concealer and blush for special occasions.

Team Bold Lip. I haven’t yet found mascara that doesn’t make my eyes red and itchy sooner or later, so I stopped trying. I don’t have any problem with lipstick, so that’s my go to when I use makeup (which is only occasionally).

Thanks Angie for the blazer info and inspo. I’m a sewist, so after checking the website details, have filed away a project idea for an ink blazer, about 24″ long, in high quality wool with a touch of spandex, and a lining with spandex as well. I can see why you were so comfortable and classy on your travels.

Team Both. With vivid red hair (from birth), I like to see my face come alive with both eye shadow/mascara AND lipstick..which these days is a great shade of orange from Milani: Orange-Gina!

I never wear eye make up but this year I intend to have my eyebrows dyed. have one or two white hairs appearing there!

I do love lipstick. Daughter gave me the colourfast Maybelline ones to try and I like them very much. Really stay on and shades are excellent . Without lipstick I feel lost!

Bold eye. I always wind up with zero lipstick about 3.2 nanoseconds after I put it on, whether from drinking lots of water or eating a snack bar or whatever, I cannot get it to stay on. So eyes it is.

Team Both. If I’m rushed for time Bold Lip ( reds,corals,oranges,rich browns,and metallics occasionally a vampy purple) . If I don’t have time for more than one thing for makeup, lipstick is my quick go to. ( It can be applied quickly at a stoplight)I’m a medium brunette with fair skin and green/hazel eyes so unlike my blonde Fab sisters my brows and lashes aren’t my first concern.
I do play with bold smokey eye looks ( usually going more neutral for lips -but sometimes I feel like doing a more full on glam look and I’ll do both) .
