August and September are good months to purchase jeans in the US. It’s right at the start of Autumn collections and fresh inputs of denim silhouettes in all styles, cuts, sizes, washes and lengths are aplenty. This is the time when I focus on shopping for jeans with clients because we can get the best picks of the crop, just in time for cold wet weather.
This season, my curvier clients have had great luck with the styles listed below. It doesn’t mean that these jeans will automatically fit, but they are a good starting point if you’re after a higher rise to combat muffin top, a contoured waistband for extra structure, a longer leg length and a slightly fuller cut on the thigh.
The premium denim suggestions offer superior denim quality and won’t stretch or bag out after several wears. But the non-premium options haven’t stretched out that badly either. Remember that you can also have the waistband adjusted to fit if the styles gape at the back of the waist.
Interestingly, some of these styles work just as well for straighter body types. For example, I have a pair of COH Ambers and David Kahn boot cuts. I don’t own Paige Premium “Hidden Hills” and COH “Elsons” but they fit well too. So don’t rule out the styles if you’re not that curvy on the lower half of your body. You might be pleasantly surprised.
We all know how stressful jeans shopping can be, so I was hoping that you could add to this list. Curvy gals, let’s hear about your favourite brands of denim jeans.

GREAT list. I love my David Kahns. What do you think of Jag jeans for curvy gals? I purchased a pair recently and love them. They fit so well and are so comfortable.

I love my 7 For All Mankind High Waisted Bootcut jeans, first and foremost. I also love COH Hutton jeans.
I recently purchased a pair of the Gap jeans in the curvy fit. Definitely not premium denim, but they fit great. A good go-to pair for me.
I’m looking forward to trying David Kahns and the other COH jeans you mentioned. I am wanting a pair of straight legs, so I’ll try those Elsons first.
I do have a pair of Joe’s that I like, but unfortunately I can’t remember the style name.

What a great list Angie! I have three from the list: Page Hidden Hills, COH Amber and Joe’s Muse, and love them all! The fit is great, and the slightly higher rise does wonders. My body type is slim but curvy, and these jeans work very well for me.
Btw, the last photo is not ‘click-able’. Are those Elsons?

Angie, thanks for this list. Last year, you suggested I look into Lucky Brand jeans, and since then I have lived in the Easy Rider and Classic Rider styles. It amazes me you can so unerringly make winning recommendations based on photos and descriptions!

Those are the Elsons, Tanya, and unfortunately I can’t find them ANYwhere.
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 8:10 am
I have been known to approach total strangers in the grocery store or mall and ask them what brand of jeans they are wearing if I see that they are shaped like me and their jeans look great on them. As a result I am going to be checking out Lucky brand this fall.

I am not curvey and I can wear the same ones you mentioned that you wear Angie. The stretch factor has changed our fashion world so much.

Another David Kahn fan here. I just bought a new DK skinny jean. I also own the Heidi http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/28.....rchresults, and I used to have these twisted seam jeans before I wore them out, and they are so flattering: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/30.....rchresults

I have the Elson’s and I wear them all the time. They are fabulous jeans, worth every penny.
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 8:24 am
I’ve got a round butt and muscular thighs so I thank you for the recommendations on jeans! I have such a hard time finding ones that fit my butt but aren’t huge at the waist or that may fit my waist but won’t go up my legs because they are so skinny.

I rate “stretch” as the most important technological breakthrough in fashion history. It is indispensable.
Marianna, Jag changes their fits all the time and so does Calvin Klein. But if you happen upon a gem, I can believe it. I have popped happy curvy clients in those brands too.
Sarah, they have the COH Elsons at Nordstrom in stores right now (not online). I had two clients in them last week. Off you go to Nordies asap!
Tanya and Sandy, I’m glad you chimed in. We have similar body types (the non-curvy variety), yet we wear some of these styles well too. That’s quite interesting.
Becky, I guess lots of mileage in this area helps! The only reason the Lucky brand styles are not on this list is because they have fairly low rises. They won’t work if you want to combat muffin top. I have curvy clients wearing Lucky “sweet ‘n lows” and “easy riders”, but they don’t have muffin top challenges or long rises. The above list is a little more flop proof. However, Lucky is always worth a try.
Melissa, anything will fit at the waist if you have it altered. If you’re a pretty pear or have a slight sway back like me, it’s the only solution.
The other annoying thing about jeans shopping is when you want to duplicate a pair of perfectly fitting jeans and they discontinue the style. I haven’t been able to find higher rise 7’s for my clients this season. Very frustrating.

Angie, would the 7FAM High Waisted Bootcuts work for your clients? They have them at Nordstrom, Shopbop, etc. right now. They are the ones I listed as my absolutely favorite jeans of all time – and if I’m not curvy, the sky is not blue.

…and thanks for the tip on the Elsons in-store. I’ll head down there on Saturday.

Sarah, I have posted two links to online stores that currently have Elsons. My comments is waiting for moderation, so it should show at some point. One of them also has a 25% coupon promo going on.

Thanks Tanya, I’ll check back till the links post.

Another rave for the COH Elsons! I have them and LOVE them, fantastic jeans. Unfortunately, they seem to be too large after only one or two wears now- either they are growing or I am shrinking!
I also love almost any 7’s (FAMK) for my body type. I’ve been wearing that brand for about 8 years now and can’t see myself stopping. Not all styles work in the waist (I agree, lots are too low), but the give the best butt of any jean brand out there, imo.
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 9:12 am
oh.. I don’t have any of these brands in Europe…
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 9:12 am
Also, I’m a huge fan of William Rast. The jeans give my curvy bod great shape. I’m waiting till I lose my last pounds before I invest in a pair, though.

As the happy owner of David Khans and Paige, I wanted to promote my new obsession, Hudson Jeans. I was recently with family who all thought I had lost weight when I walked off the plane in these:

I’m narrow through the hips and I have the David Kahn boot cuts. They were my first pair of premium jeans and the first pair I’ve owned that don’t slide off my hips! Worth every penny! I believe the rise is around 9″, which helps contain the muffin top nicely. It’s so nice not to have to hike up my pants every time I change position!
I also just got the COH Ava straight legs. My Nordstrom didn’t have any Elsons. I’m wondering if the Ava is replacing the Elson? From what I can tell, they both have an 8″ rise, but the Ava is noted as being “low rise.” Confusing. Regardless, I love the Ava jeans. Worth a try if you can’t find Elsons.
I asked about the Ambers when I was at Nordstrom, and my salesperson said that their vendor had stopped sending them, because they weren’t selling. EEEK! I must say that straight legs and skinnies were in abundance.
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 9:16 am
I don’t own any premium denim, but have always had good fit with Gap ever since my teens. And though my body has definitely changed over the past 20 years from a slim rectangle to a softer rectangle with curvy bottom, Gap still remains my best fit in any of their styles. I just thrifted last year’s model — Gap Essential — and didn’t even have to try it on to know if it would fit. Its a straight leg, not skinny, but not a wide trouser either.
Interestingly, Old Navy and Banana Republic don’t fit as well.
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 9:33 am
I swear by a pair of jeans I got at Express last year. The Mia cut is perfect on me, and I’m curvy! Best part is, I don’t have “diaper butt” sag after wearing them a few times. (and they’re on sale right now, so I’m going to go get a couple more pairs!!)
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 9:39 am
I absolutely love my Paige Premium “Hidden Hills” boot cuts. I’m a straighter body type, I guess. Heaviest in the middle. But these still fit well.
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 9:46 am
I, too, have the COH Elsons and love them so much! I’m tall and “medium” curvy, and I don’t know if I’m happier with the hip room or the slghtly higher rise. They are fabulous – well worth the money.
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 10:06 am
Well,
As a rectangle with somewhat of a butt, I am in a perpetual quest to find the perfect jean.I need a boyish cut for the hips that is higher in the back than the front. I just sent back 6 pairs I ordered on line and am off to Nordstroms tonight. All jeans fall down when I sit and throughout the day. The Paige skinnies are too low in the back.
Junior jeans fit but stretch out like crazy!
Angie, maybe I will try some of the ones that you can wear amoung the others you recommended. Are you doing a blog on rectangles?
I love hearing everyone’s experiences.

I’ve never fit into the Joe’s Jeans ‘Honey’ style, but the ‘Muse’ is fantastic!

I’m a fan of Gap’s Long and Lean, too …

I have a pair of the Gap Curvy jeans and they are ok, but with my high (or short) waist, they create a muffin top where none existed before. However, I have about four prs. of NYDJ (Not Your Daughter’s Jeans) and they are NOT fuddy duddy! These are literally the only jeans that make me go “wow” when I put them on! I look so much better-they don’t squeeze me, yet they seem to smooth everything out. I have trouser and boot cut, dark rinse indigo wide leg, and black. The only ones I ever returned were a pr. of cords. I do not know if they are available outside the U.S., but I am totally satisfied with them. They come in regular misses and women’s sizes. One caveat-go down one size.
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 10:59 am
All of these would be low rise on me. The only acceptable ones would be the David Kahns and maybe the Paiges.
The lovely forum members (and Angie) insist I’m not curvy on the bottom half but I have to say curvy fits are usually more comfortable on me, and don’t usually look as terrible as one might assume. I have only been avoiding them because of the insistence that I’m not curvy which makes me afraid any curvy jeans will bag and sag on me even if they look fine in the store. OTOH, I’m not “boyish” or straight either. Maybe I’m the rare and elusive AVERAGE body type (at least on the bottom). I know I don’t have especially curvy hips or thighs, but I definitely have butt, and I have the back rise measurement to prove it. I may revisit curvy jeans when I next need to go denim shopping.
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 11:16 am
I’m wearing CoH Amber right now! They are some of the most flattering jeans I’ve ever had. I tried the corduroy version this year, but they were no wear near as good – I assume the denim version has more of a “lock and load” component to them that doesn’t work with the lighter fabrics.
I also can’t wear Joe’s Honey, but the Muse fits great.
I also found the J Brand Scarlett cigarette jean to be surprisingly flattering. It’s hard to find a skinny/straight leg that works with my body.
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 11:22 am
Ack, “no wear” should be “nowhere”…..
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 11:22 am
Sherrykay, you’ve got it ! NYDJ are the best jeans ever. Holding you in without squeezing, and smoothing power – they look perfect and wash well too! I’m very “booty-licous” with a small waist and they still fit perfectly. My only issue was that I had to trim the length about an inch, no problem! They do come in regular misses and women’s sizes. Have found them at Nordstrom’s and Macy’s. Didn’t really wear jeans often until finding these. Can you tell I love them?
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 11:25 am
I am a big fan of Kut From the Kloth, which I found at Nordstrom. I have wide hips and a big rear and thighs, yet a small waist, so finding things that I can even get over my hips is a challenge. Kut From the Kloth have some stretch to them, and they are not horribly expensive (~$80).
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 11:28 am
Just last night, I bought a pair of COH Amber in a nice, dark wash. I found them at Belk on the clearance rack for less than $60. I haven’t worn them yet, but they seem very comfy and the higher rise works so much better for me. I don’t know if I’m considered “curvy” or not, but I have high hopes for them.
Now I’m on the hunt for the perfect pair of skinnies. I’ll certainly check out the BR pair you mentioned, Angie!
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 11:30 am
I don’t know anything about the premium pricey brands, but have had decent luck with Gap curvy. Unfortunately, their regulars often get a bit too short for me after washing, and the longs have a correspondingly longer rise, which doesn’t work with my short-hippedness.
The brand that I recommend to everyone with the ‘if I buy it to fit my hips it gapes in the waist’ problem is the Eddie Bauer curvy fit. They really are smaller in the waist and bigger in the hips (and they have a regular long, which has a longer inseam and the regular rise which is perfect for me). EB also has a style of pants that has the same cut.
LLBean has also recently come out with a curvy fit – the waist/hip ratio is not as big as the EB jeans, but they may work for some people, and the cut is a looser one with non-stretch denim (which I actually prefer since it bags out less, but can rarely find in something that fits).

I’m with Marianna – I recently tried the JAG Lucy bootcut jeans at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale after admiring them on my mom, & it’s safe to say that they are a new favorite. Very soft, stretchy, but they haven’t bagged out. I decided to invest in a second pair when I found them on sale so I can hem one for flats & leave the other pair for jeans.
My Ann Taylor “Curvy” jeans are great too, but the quality of the denim is definitely inferior to the JAG jeans.

Thanks for the links Tanya, and for the extra suggestions ladies. This list is growing! And it looks like Elson’s are a fiercely coveted commodity at the moment.
Maya, the “Hidden Hills” and “Ambers” actually come up higher in the back rise than the DK’s. I’m pretty sure their rises would be absolutely fine for your lovely bottom.
Rute, there are ways of getting these jeans in Europe. Inge lives in Belgium and manages pretty well. I think she has a way of shipping them. You can ask her about her secret on the forum.
Sarah, William Rast is an interesting option. He is inconsistent with his cuts and styles from year to year (just like Marc Jacobs), but if you score a style that works, that’s fabulous.
Greenglove, I am trying to understand why your jeans fall off. Perhaps you need to have them altered at the waist? So far, I’m convinced that’s the issue.
I have mixed feelings about Gap and all their jeans. They generally should fit better than they do. It’s very hit and miss at the moment. But it’s great if you scored with one of their styles!
NYDJ’s have a great girdling front and back rise. There is no doubt! I pop clients into their jeans and they are happy for a while. But at the end of the day my clients feel that the quality of the denim bags out and that they don’t look sassy, hip and chic. Unfortunately, I have to agree. The quality of the denim is not stellar. That’s why the style did not make my list.
Remember that you don’t need to purchase premium denim at full price. There are ways and means of getting deep discounts and the lasses on our forum are pros at this.
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
Aren’t Joe’s Honey jeans rather low rise (at least in the front)? I prefer the Muse jeans, as a previous commentor also suggested, because they are more roomy in the thigh and have a higher rise (9 ” I think?).
But, I always have issues with my thighs fitting into jeans! I can’t wear COH or 7 jeans at all. I also like Rich and Skinny jeans – almost all of their style have stretch in them – and I have a couple of pairs of Habitual jeans that are OK, too.
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
Anyone with a suggestion for premium denim for plus sizes?
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
Angie
Many thanks for posting jeans for curvy women that do no have stars and rhinestones on the back pockets!
Besides the usual challenge of finding the perfect pair of jeans, I have been so disappointed with all the ‘do dads’ that manufacturers have felt we all wanted to parade around on our behinds.
I would rather wear a lunch menu sign for a favorite restaurant; at least I know I enjoy their food.
I look forward to trying a pair of the skinnies.
I did buy one pair at Express last year that was suggested on this site, they fit well. But it is a fine line (literally) as to whether they pass the sit down test.
Hopefully I will have some luck with one of these suggestions.
Great post.

Swirl – David Kahn has a plus size bootcut jean.

Angie, the description on Nordies says both the DK’s and the Hidden Hills have a 13″ back rise. Is that accurate? That is too short for me. I need at least 14″ to avoid the dreaded bottom cleavage, but I am happiest in 15″. The Ambers are high enough in the back but too low in the front. It’s a never-ending battle.
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
I am short and short-waisted – and the David Kahn boot cuts are the best! They’ve been laundered many times (always hang to dry, though) and they look like new!

Thanks, Boof. I was going to mention that DK’s come in plus sizes too. Also, Lane Bryant has added premium denim options to their collections so it’s worth trying there as well.
Jeneva, Joe’s “Muse” is a great fit. But I’ve found that the “Honey” is even more forgiving. But that doesn’t mean that the “Muse” isn’t perfect for you.
Maya, that is accurate. But there is something about the double-front button closure on the “Hidden Hills” that makes it feel higher in the rise. It sounds crazy, but you should try them. I also think you’ll like the BR classic skinnies I linked too. That rise is even higher.
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
I have a round butt and very muscular thighs, and wear Joe’s Honeys. But I find that the rise is *very* low–I’m only 5′1 and the top of the jeans hit me at my hipbones. Also, unlike other premium denim, I find that Joe’s stretch a lot throughout a day of wear. I might have to give the Muse a try, after all of these positive comments.
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
Swirl, sadly there aren’t many options for plus size premium denim. I own two pairs — David Kahns and Jag jeans. I adore both. Other than that I have a bunch of Gap jeans but I definitely prefer the premium pairs. There is absolutely no comparison. Lane Bryant had Seven jeans for a while but I never liked any of the cuts. Paige Premium Denim had some plus size jeans but discontinued them. You can look on eBay for those.
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
I don’t wear premium denim.I am writing from Austrlia I am another with proportionately larger bottom and thighs and I love Jeanswest “W” fit. Straightcut jeans with a high rise. I think this might be them

I’d like the BR skinnies if I liked skinnies
I am on the hunt for some straight legs and it is, as always for most women, a very frustrating process. Wish I had duplicated my Rich and Skinny jeans when I had the chance.
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 6:06 pm
Awesome article, thanks. I’ll use this as reference when I go jeans shopping. I haven’t made any attempts after my spring search didn’t yield the perfect pair… time to kick this off again. Thanks Angie!
Posted on September 24th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
I was totally excited about the 1969 “Curvy” Gap Jeans and purchased two pair. Unfortunately, they stretched out horribly after one wearing! That’s what I get for online shopping. Never again.
However, I just tried on and bought two pair of Lucky Brand Jeans (Lola Boot and Sweet & Low) and have high hopes. They seem more structured and I wised up and bought a smaller than usual size to anticipate stretch thanks to the advice of the salesperson. Lucky seems to have a good selection.

Thank you for this post. Will try these for size. .
I really like the clean deep blue wash jean that Valerie Bertinelli wore in a fairly recent commercial.

does anyone know which brands these may be?
