Roundup: Summer Items

Weekly roundups are back in full swing now that we’re back from our four week trip. Many of the items below have been winners on my clients, and five of them found a home in my own wardrobe. I’m thrilled with my Gabor oxfords, Clarks ankle strap pumps, COS shirtdress, Ann Taylor boatneck sweater, and J.Crew Breton stripe sweater. I’ve also ordered the Franco Sarto Holts in gold since the ones I have in white have been brilliant Summer shoes.

  • Helmut Lang 'Sonar Wool' Asymmetrical Sleeve Dress: A little sheer, but forgiving around the midriff, tummy and hip area nonetheless. The diagonal sleeves are short, but still pretty covered. Wear shapewear if it’s too sheer, and enjoy its avant-garde integrity. One of my clients bought this in grey and looks like a million bucks. Works well on petites and regular height lasses.
  • B44 Dressed By Bailey 44 Stripe Knit Midi Dress: These magical diagonal lines do not disappoint because they have a wonderful way of either straightening curves OR accentuating them depending on your preference. The handkerchief hem is unique and the back strap detailing is breezy and alluring.
  • Mural Cape Blazer: A breezy, avant-garde and dramatic topper for Summer. Also available in white.
  • Free People 'Pick Me Up' Drapey Tee: Casual, trendy and very breezy. Fab over shorts or slim bottoms.
  • Gabor Gibson Perforated Zip Detail Shoes, White Leather: A fun laceless oxford that's extremely comfortable. Buttery leather with an ultra soft and supportive cushioning footbed. Remarkably, the style works as well for high volume feet as it does for low volume feet. The perforations make them breezy closed shoes for Summer. The zipper on the vamp is a nice trendy touch. Note that these are UK sizes. A US size 6.5 is a UK size 4.
  • Clarks Chinaberry Ice: Block heels and square toes are an on trend '90s touch. These Clarks are very comfortable and feel quite supportive. The square toe provides a roomy toe box fit. The snakeskin is a versatile pattern. Note that these are UK sizes. A US size 6.5 is a UK size 4.
  • Leonor Shirtdress: A voluminous and delicate shirtdress that works as well with flats as it does with heels because of the strategically placed high-low hemline.
  • Petalprint Cross-Back Dress: A Retro sheath in a crisp cotton with plenty of length. Fun back detailing that's good with a regular bra.
  • Aleta Wrap Top: A soft shirty blouse with waist definition. Good on hourglass and pear shapes.
  • COS Cotton shirt dress: A cocoon shaped shirtdress in a very lightweight cotton. Fun pockets and tiny grandpa collar. Great on apple shapes but just as good on a straight figure. Can also work on curvy hourglasses with a smaller bust.
  • Franco Sarto Holt Two-Piece Flats: An extremely comfy ankle strap flat with genius back criss-cross strap detailing. The top and bottom straps are attached to each other, which makes the style more stable to walk in because the straps stay put.
  • Striped Peplum Tank: A great top for the ultra curvy figure. Defines an already small waistline, and is forgiving on the belly area.
  • COS Oversized knitted t-shirt: A fab oversized linen striped tee with lots of length. Non-scratch. Best partially tucked at the side for a bit of structure. Lots of length for tall gals.
  • Amaya Dress: A breezy frock that works well on curvy petites who are prepared to surrender their waistlines. The diagonal colour blocking and handkerchief hemline provide just enough structure.
  • Zara Wrap Jacket: A very lightweight topper with lots of arty drape. Fitted and voluminous in all the right places. Works surprisingly well on petites.
  • Ellen Tracy Belted Print Cotton Fit & Flare Dress: A classic fit-and-flare that works well on a larger bust with a defined waist.
  • J.Crew Seaside pant: Excellent casual linen trousers that provide a nice alternative to jeans.
  • J.Crew Honeycomb cocoon top: A fab top on a curvy body with a larger bust. Looks good semi tucked, but just as good worn out over slim bottoms because of the curved hemline. Gorgeous crease-resistant fabric.
  • J.Crew Summerweight cotton sweater in stripe: A very lightweight, soft and gauzy Summer pullover that runs a size large. Modern Classic Breton Stripe Fabness.
  • Ann Taylor Boatneck Sweater: A crisp and cool open-weave boatneck pullover that comes in three colours. It's short so best worn faux tucked with a belt. Best on a long neck.
  • John Fluevog Gladice: Comfortable and spunky black tipped shooties. Love the low heel.
  • John Fluevog Scheme: Comfortable if you manage the heel height. Eye-catching party on your feet.
  • John Fluevog Bekkie: The most comfortable Summer cut-out booties of all time. Refined Hard Edge. They would be mine if they came in white.
  • Trouvé Pointed Hem Tube Skirt: A pencil skirt with a sloping hem makes for a fun change. Two fun patterns to choose from. The chevron stripe is especially slimming.
  • Cynthia Steffe 'Maya' Tie Waist Fit & Flare Shirtdress: A super shirtdress for petites and regular height gals. The curved hemline and broad waistband are unique. Comes in four colours.
  • June & Hudson Tie Open Front Midi Dress: Breezy yet covered. Good on a larger bust.
  • NYDJ 'Nanette' Stretch Crop Jeans (Hayburn) (Plus Size): Fab fitting cropped jeans that can be dressed up or down.
  • Vince Camuto 'Emore' Leather Sandal (Women): Season after season, Vince Camuto makes comfortable cage heels if you can manage the heel height. I vote tan or red in this style.
  • Eileen Fisher Drape Front Shift Dress (Regular & Petite): A brilliant breezy sack dress that looks especially fab on petite apples with a short neck and larger bust. Lots of great colours. Size down a size. Read the rave reviews.
  • Eileen Fisher Drape Neck Jersey Shift Dress (Plus Size): A brilliant breezy sack dress that looks especially fab on plus size apple shapes with a short neck and larger bust. Lots of great colours. Read the rave reviews.
  • Calenzana Dress: Elegant, pretty, flowing and semi-structured. Perfect with white footwear.
  • Sejour 'Addison' Stretch Crop Pants (Plus Size): The best plus size cropped pant this season. Fits well over both a curvy and straighter bottom half. Read the rave reviews.
  • J.Crew Drop-waist sleeveless dress in pinstripe: 1920's inspired and super flirty for the office. Loving the dropped waist. Different.
  • COS Top with split hem: This peplum top is AMAZING. Trust me - the photo does not do it justice. It has great detailing like curved side slits, a flounced drop-waist peplum, and a high-low hemline. It works extremely well on a curvy upper body with a large bust in a US size 16. Hides midriff lumps and bumps. And the fabric is pebbled too. Excellent over a pencil skirt or narrow pants. You'll have to try it to believe it. Comes in black too.

Travel Outfit: High Tea at The Langham

Outfit 13 in the series on Angie’s travel capsule for a 4 week trip

Getting dressed up to have British high tea is one of my favourite things to do. And afternoon tea in London is the best in the world. My striped midi skirt, orange cropped top, and cow print heels made it into my travel capsule especially for this occasion.

We spent a while deciding where to have afternoon tea because there are many five-star options in London. High tea is a pastry chef’s work of art these days and the competition is fierce.

Afternoon Tea - The Langham

I eventually chose the Wedgwood High Tea at the Palm Court in the Langham Hotel because their scones — my favourite part — looked particularly scrumptious. I was not disappointed. Let’s just say that they were the best scones I’ve had and that both the savoury and sweet parts of high tea met my high expectations. Beautifully presented, deliciously tasty and delivered with excellent service.

Afternoon Tea - Savory & Sweet

I shopped with sis-in-law Keri for four hours on Regent Street before afternoon tea at 4 pm, which meant that I couldn’t come home to change into this outfit. So I wore my white loafers to commute by train and pound the busy streets, changing into heels at the Langham Hotel in time for tea. Of course, I was overdressed for shopping, but is was the most practical dressing solution for the day. Thankfully it all worked out because I was adequately comfy for shopping and sufficiently dressy for tea.

It’s taken me a year to find the right cropped top to wear with this skirt, because none of them were exactly the right length. Finally I scored at Zara just before our trip and am pleased with the combination. It’s the only time I’ve worn the skirt during our four weeks away, but it was absolutely worth bringing it along. I topped the lot off with the mixed media denim jacket for a little urban grit.

Summer is well and truly here in all the places we’ve been over the last month, which includes London, Amsterdam and here at home in Seattle. Although we covered our travels and my outfits quite a bit during the trip, we’ll leave that to the next recap because we haven’t quite finished with it yet. In this month’s recap, Summer footwear, outfits from me and some outstanding outfit bloggers, three ensembles and some other must reads.

The Magical Powers of Diagonal Lines

Diagonal lines on a garment create a visually interesting and flattering effect on the body. They have a magical way of either straightening curves OR creating curves, which depending on your needs can balance out proportions. They are typically created by diagonal stripes or asymmetrical hemlines, and some garments incorporate both.

Diagonal Stripes

The diagonal stripes in these dresses, tunics and skirt play the best tricks on your eyes. They temper the volume of the white tunic by drawing the eye back to the centre of the outfit, thereby emphasizing the vertical (1). The diagonal lines on the sleeved midi dress draw the eye back to the waistline, thereby accentuating a defined waist (2). The wide set stripes break up the expanse of solid fabric in the black sheath making the model look curvier than she is (3). The diagonal lines on the handkerchief hem skirt give it some structure by breaking up the expanse of the solid colour (4). They also add a bit of shape to the wide and flowing volume on the lower leg.

Asymmetrical Hemlines

Asymmetrical hemlines are your friend because they create diagonal lines without any pattern on the garment. The asymmetrical hemlines in the first three tops create a fab sense of structure because the diagonal lines flatten the curve on the thigh and showcases more of the leg line from the hips up. Conversely, if you’re narrow on the hip, the diagonal lines of the hems would add some curve and volume. A straight hem on those long tops would look top heavy and would have shortened the leg line.

Eileen Fisher Soft V-Neck Jersey Top

This final top is an interesting use of different diagonal lines working together. The asymmetrical hemline creates a little more structure on the hip. The side ruching of the wrap front creates diagonal lines in the form of pleats that draw the eye towards the waistline, making it look narrower and more defined.

Striped Matchy-Matchy Fun

A new outfit from Amber McNaught of Forever Amber, whom we introduced to YLF in July 2014.

A bold Modern Classic outfit that is extra fun because Amber has matched her bag to the rest of the look. The structured satchel also echoes the crisp lines of the dressy trousers. Their bright red colour paired with the navy and white striped long-sleeved tee gives the look a fresh nautical feel. The wide boatneck showcases Amber’s shoulders, while the fitted silhouette works well with the tailored fit of the cropped pants. Streamlined and elegant. Gold metallic snake-embossed espadrille wedge sandals — they complement Amber’s red locks — and a big gold watch add a touch of sunny luxury.
