A Fab Avant-Garde Gilet

One of my clients looked absolutely sensational in Derek Lam’s Double Face Sleeveless Coat last week. This client is regular height, short-waisted, dramatic, in her fifties, and has gorgeous long curly brown hair with auburn highlights. She loved the black so much she had to wear it right away.

The gilet does NOT run true to size as Nordstrom suggests, but two sizes large. A US4 fit my US8 client with a good amount of architectural drape (just like the model in the photo). Roomy, but with just enough structure. And in this case, the gilet looks better buttoned-up in front to temper the volume.

The gilet is soft. You can drive in it, keep it on indoors, or work in it at the office. The gathered collar looks fussy but stays put. You don’t need to have a long neck to wear the collar because it folds down to create a flatter shape. It’s ideal for moderate climates, and the side entry pockets are great.

The charcoal is an easy match over a column of black if you like black and grey outfits. This particular client prefers combining black with earth tones and jewel tones. So here are the exact items that we paired with her new black gilet. No blue denim! We finished off the look with black booties and pumps, a chocolate brown bag, and a fun orange necklace.

Must-Haves: Fall & Winter 2016

Fashion has become a complex melting pot of sartorial choices that almost anything goes as long as you add an intentionally trendy aspect to the outfit. Here’s a shortlist of eight must-haves for the cold weather season that cut across all body types, ages, price points and lifestyles. As always, it’s a question of finding the renditions that work best for you.

1. Create A Maximal Effect

Maximalism is the most important trend of this season and seasons to come. It’s about wearing it all together to create a harmonized whole. That means remixing patterns, textures, colours and silhouettes, because the only limit to the aesthetic is your own tolerance for the complex combination. Sport multiple accessories, combine a range of colours and patterns, dress in multiple visual layers, and don’t forget dramatic nail polish, rainbow hair, and make-up.

Of course, Maximalism runs on a continuum, and you’re free to interpret it as fully as you see on the catwalks, or to tone things down considerably.

2. Wear Cropped Bottoms with Boots

For the third year in a row, cropped lengths — in any silhouette of pants or jeans — are THE on trend silhouette for bottoms. Sport leggings or skinnies at cropped lengths. Straight or flared jeans or trousers at cropped lengths. Boyfriend jeans, slouchies and harem pants at cropped lengths, or any shape of culotte at cropped lengths. Crop lengths two to four inches above the ankle bone for an intentional effect.

Pair cropped bottoms with shooties, booties, high-shaft booties and taller boots. Expose a slither of skin between the tops of the boots and the hem of the bottoms, or wear taller boots under flared or wider crops to insulate against the cold.

3. Enjoy a Little Waist Definition

Showcasing the waist is back with a vengeance. Wear belted tops and toppers, and all sorts of tailored pieces. Haul out the wrap tops. Think fit-and-flare frocks and high rises on jeans and pants. Tuck fluid tops into pencil skirts. The higher rises on jeans, pants and skirts are all about defining the waist when tops are tucked or semi-tucked.

If you’re apple shaped or uncomfortable showcasing the midsection, simply wear an untucked fluid top that glides over the tummy area under an open tailored jacket that is fitted at the waist. The vertical line that is created down the front of the body by the open jacket is slimming. The fitted side seams of the jacket hint at the waist, while the fluidity of the top camouflages midsection lumpage and bumpage.

4. Add Some Faux Fur

Think faux fur coats, jackets and vests, across solids, patterns, and in any colour. If a faux fur garment is too much of a commitment, wear faux fur as a trim on a garment, or sport it through an accessory.

5. Sport Round Square Toes & Block Heels

Dainty pointy toe footwear was all the rage for many years. But these days it’s becoming a modern classic. If you’re a trendy shoe gal, sport round square toes, along with all sorts of Mary Janes, flatforms and platforms. Just about any shoe with a block heel looks trendy at the moment.

6. Flirt with Dandy Flounce

Wear dandy garments that swish with ruffles, pussy bows and cascading flounces. Soft, romantic, and actually as masculine as it is girly. Think back to how well the New Romantics wore this vibe in the ‘80s.

7. Rock the ‘70s

There is no stopping the sensational glam, boho and disco style sensibilities of the ‘70s. Think full-length flared jeans and trousers. T-necks layered under dresses and tops. Fringe, suede anything, leather trench coats, midi skirts and dresses, wrap tops and dresses, bell sleeves, and half-shoulder silhouettes.

8. Glam Up Gothic Romance & Renaissance

Incorporate velvet, brocade, lace and jacquard in any wardrobe item. Feel free to wear these textures together for maximal effect. Wear head-to-toe black with LOTS of texture and garment interest. Remix black lace, faux fur, brocade and leather in one outfit instead of flat head-to-toe black. Add bling for shine.

Trends like extended sleeves, plaid coats, shearling coats, sandals with socks, over-the-knee boots, pink anything, military ink blue, embroidery, sharp shoulders, maxi cardigans, leather coats, trouser suiting, fashionable puffer coats, forest green, balloon sleeves and reconstructed denim provide extra variety. And trendy new outfit proportions amp up the freshness of an outfit.

Which trends are featuring in your Fall and Winter wardrobe refresh this season? Are there any surprises?

Ensemble: Two Plaid Shirt Combinations

Autumn is a fab time of year to wear a plaid shirt. In Seattle plaid shirts are almost part of the culture, so good thing I’m a fan. This ensemble was inspired by my new fiery check boy shirt from J.Crew, which I’ve worn a lot with jeans and jackets over the last few weeks. It also matches my old tomato red skirt.

Plaid shirts across all sorts of check designs are an iconic classic. These days, plaid fabrications are super soft and drapey, making them very comfortable. Most of them are casual and boxy, although dressier and more fitted versions are available too. I insist on semi-tucking or fully tucking my own plaid shirt so that I don’t feel schlumpy. A little structure can go a long way.

Both of the outfits here were inspired by my wardrobe (you can see the exact items in the collection). I’ve worn the version with the jeans a couple of times and felt very happy in it. I guess the only thing left for me to do is get a faux fur coat and some cold weather pumps.

Here are two ways to wear a plaid shirt. I like my own shirts bright or in high-contrasting neutrals, but feel free to sport ANY colour palette.

Plaid Shirt, Jeans, and Bling

Combine a plaid shirt with trendy jeans like culottes or flared/straight crops and semi-tuck the shirt for structure if needed. Scrunch the sleeves for extra structure too. Add footwear that works with the silhouette of the bottoms. Add a bling necklace or a pile of pearls for a maximal effect. Add a topper like a blazer, moto, tweed or faux fur jacket. A shearling or wool vest will also work.

Plaid Shirt, Skirt and Statement Topper

Combine a plaid shirt with a pencil skirt, and top things off with a dramatic topper. I’ve chosen faux fur for drama. Finish off the look with footwear that works with the skirt, like pumps, booties, heeled loafers or tall boots. A bling necklace is optional. Add jewellery, eyewear and watch as desired.

Five Reasons To Love a Cashmere Wrap

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to see the light, but better late than never. I’ve become a cashmere wrap convert and don’t want to be without one. I nabbed Halogen’s Cashmere Tavel Wrap in oatmeal when it went on sale, thinking it would be extra cosy for freezing long flights on a plane. It’s GORGEOUS, and I confirm the rave reviews. Ultra soft, cosy, warm, lightweight, flattering, and a good size for wrapping.

I haven’t travelled with the wrap yet, but it’s become an instant wardrobe workhorse because it double duties in many ways.

1. Super Statement Scarf

Of course, it’s a great statement scarf, as you can see from the photos in the collection. Dress it up or down, and wear it with just about anything. It’s not going to date, so if you look after the wrap, the cost per wear will whittle down to nothing.

2. Perfect for Plane Travel

You can wear the wrap as a scarf or wrap on a flight, or drape it over your legs as a blanket. Softer and larger than the blankets they give you on a flight, and probably more fragrant.

3. Handy to Keep at the Office

It’s a good idea to keep a dressier wrap in a versatile colour by your desk at the office for when things get chilly. It looks good, and seamlessly becomes part of any outfit. It doesn’t get in the way when you type and it’s extremely comfortable. I’ve been draping mine around my shoulders when I work at my desk in our home office.

4. Fabulous Loungewear

It’s a good item to snuggle up with when you’re watching tele, chatting, or reading quietly at home. Wear it over regular clothes or your pyjamas. You might as well be stylish when you lounge!

5. Keeps Your Yorkie Happy

Our doggy Sam is just as delighted with my new wrap as I am. Sam, who weighs barely six pounds, sometimes sleeps on my lap as I work first thing in the morning. This is hands down my favourite way to use my cashmere wrap.
