Fabulous Unplanned Wardrobe Purchases

Whether it’s rigid, loose, or intuitive, wardrobe planning helps you to fill holes, prevent duplications, and evolve your style. It helps you stick to colour palettes, and to maintain the right top-to-bottom ratios, solid-to-pattern ratios, and seasonal mix. It also helps you to build a foundation of the right wardrobe essentials and basics. This practical, organized approach to shopping eliminates the feeling of having a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear because it forces you to think about the way individual items can be combined to create fab, pulled-together outfits.

But there are times when you find wardrobe items — or they find you — that are not on your shopping list. They are unplanned, spontaneous, impulsive, do not fill a wardrobe hole, and are not necessary. Yet they evoke a high level of positive emotion that can not be denied. You love the way you look when you try them on, and they make you smile. Budget and storage space permitting, I vote get the item because this is in itself a fun experience that keeps the heart and emotion in your wardrobe and style.

Practically though, it’s good to make sure that the spontaneous purchase works with what you have in your wardrobe in order to prevent orphans, and “what was I thinking?” feelings that might come later. Also, make sure that the item fits and feels as good as it did when you first tried it on. And most importantly, that you will actually wear it.

I made two very unplanned purchases recently. First with an orange pair of vegan leather wide cropped pants, and second with a tomato red Lodge wool coat. In both instances, the unexpected purchases found me, and it was love at first sight. I raced across J.Crew to try on that orangey red coat — that’s how excited I was about it. It’s beautifully Mod in a great ‘60s way and has a gold zipper. It also has a VERY warm Super-fill lining that makes it as insulating as a puffer coat. I was further encouraged by Greg giving both items the big thumbs up when I tried them on in stores. Neither was on my shopping list. But since I am fleshing out the solid components of my wardrobe, and these are dead right for my colour palettes, they earned a place in my wardrobe. Practically, they are the right items for my climate and lifestyle.

I have worn both items multiple times already. There is something to be said for the occasional fabulous unplanned wardrobe purchase because it’s fun, and gives you quite the adrenaline rush.

Of course, relying too heavily on your emotions when shopping is problematic because you forget to purchase for your needs. Your emotions need to be focussed on the right pieces in order to create a functional wardrobe. This brings me back to the importance of creating a stylish balance. Consult your head AND your heart when adding items to your wardrobe.

Trend: The Sweatshirt Dress

Think of an extra long sweatshirt with a length that finishes somewhere between the middle of the thigh and the top of the ankle, and you’ve got yourself an on-trend sweatshirt dress. They are made of French terry, fleece, or rugby jersey, and are super soft. Silhouettes are usually fluid or oversized, sleeved, and sometimes hooded. Necklines are high, but zippered versions open up the neckline. Occasionally there’s a fitted, or mixed-media version. Sometimes there is drawstring detailing to define the waist. Most are solid, and some are patterned, embroidered, or colour-blocked. Some have fun side entry pockets. Sweatshirt dresses are more substantial than T-shirt dresses. Some look more athletic than others. Here are some examples:

These ultra-relaxed dresses can be worn on their own, or over leggings, skinnies, or hosiery. For footwear, sneakers are a slam dunk, but so are Birkenstocks and casual boots. They are soft, cosy, and very comfortable. You can wear them out and about, to the beach, use them as a swimsuit cover-up, or wear them at home. They make pretty good loungewear too. With more people working at home, the trend has gained momentum and is mainstream.

I keep looking at these dresses because their casual vibe appeals to me. I’d wear them with sneakers and bare legs in the Spring or Summer. I’d pop a denim jacket over the top if I needed an extra layer. A moto or bomber jacket would work too. I haven’t found one in a midi length that is gently fluid with a very neat and tidy hood in a colour that I like yet. But when I do, I will give it a go.

Over to you. What do you think of the sweatshirt dress trend?

Fun Fashion Quote

Let’s start this new year with a quote by creative director Libby DeLana on Cup of Jo that made me smile so much:

“I went gray when I was 32. It was salt and peppery, and I knew that it would take time and money to dye it. Then, one day, this little girl came up and said, ‘Your hair is like glitter! It has magic in it.’ And I thought, that’s right! It is magic. Now, it’s who I am.”

Happy New Year

Time flies by far too fast, and it seems faster each year. As I said back in July, I’m making an effort to be more present for the small and wonderful things that happen every day. I don’t want meaningful moments to pass me by because I’m focussed on what needs to be done, or waiting for the next big event. The anticipation of that is in itself wishing away precious time. The global pandemic makes it tricky to plan too far ahead anyway. So I might as well relax the regimented calendar I normally like to have in my life, and roll with the punches. Cheers to more spontaneity, and seizing of the moment in 2022.

Each year I try to move forward in some small or big way, which is why January has become a month of soul-searching, reflecting and goal-setting. I think about my priorities and the priorities of my loved ones. I think about how I can do things in a better way, and become a better person. I think about what I want to achieve, and how I’m going to achieve it. I try to make peace with the things that bothered me last year so that I can move forward with a positive attitude. I also think about how I can provide a supportive environment for others, and what it means to be self-fulfilled.

These are heavy things to think about, and it can be challenging and stressful. When I reflect about fashion and style, on the other hand, I find that things are more light-hearted, enjoyable, and easier to troubleshoot. That’s why having fun with fashion and style is important. Don’t take it too seriously, and don’t let it boss you around. Be kind to yourself, laugh a lot, and relax into your style journey. I wish you a happy, healthy, safe, and fabulous 2022. Onward we go!

Compliments of the Season

Our year was filled with sadness and stress, but little Jo arrived in April and filled our hearts with joy. The only thing better than having one Yorkshire Terrier is having two. Twice the fun, companionship, energy, cheekiness, playfulness, and affection. Jo is as precious and special as can be, and we’re excited to have our first Christmas with Sam and Jo together.

Of the doggies that Greg and I have known, Sam is the most well-behaved of them all. He is naturally chill, sweet, cerebral, sensitive, playful, affectionate, and very obedient. He’s an awfully good little guy, who earned his ‘NICE’ Christmas bandana right away. In contrast, his little sister Jo is the naughtiest puppy we’ve ever had. She is bold, cunning, tenacious, full of beans, and gets into everything. I was sure that she was going to sport a ‘NAUGHTY’ Christmas bandana this year. But as Jo grew up she developed beautiful manners, and has become a very good little girl. She is as sweet, obedient, and affectionate as Sam, despite her fiesty persona. Jo earned her ‘NICE’ Christmas bandana after all.

Fully grown at five pounds, Jo is the most adorable tiny thing. She loves big brother Sam most of all, and although little sisters can be annoying, Sam grows more fond of Jo every day. They sleep and play together, and have become a formidable team. They enrich our lives in that incomparable way that dogs do.

We’ll be having a festive holiday at home in Seattle. Presents and cosiness at home in the morning, and fun with our very close friends in the afternoon. It’s impossible to have a quiet Christmas with Yorkies. But we are guaranteed a fun one with laugher, personality, good spirits, and lovely long walks.

That’s a wrap for 2021. Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, let this be a time to feel comforted, generous, compassionate, and think about the good in our lives. A time to have fun and find peace in our hearts. We’ll be back with stylish thoughts and fashionable fun in the new year. Wishing you and your loved ones a safe, peaceful, festive and happy holiday season.
