The Shaggy Vest: Yay or Nay

The shaggy vest (or fur vest) in both real and faux fur was very fringe last year. Although the item is by no means mainstream, its gaining popularity both in stores and on the street. I guess we’re building up to a very 70’s inspired Spring and Summer 2011.

Shaggy or fur vests have a delightfully dramatic retro appeal. Fabulous and fun. Wear them casually over a simple layering top with jeans and boots. Wear them over a soft blouse and skirt combination with hose and pumps. Or my favourite combination, over a sleek dress with hose and feminine footwear.

Wearing a fur vest with or without a colour contrasting  layer underneath makes a huge difference to my eye. Sometimes I like a high contrast between the layers and sometimes I prefer a low or no contrast at all.

Fabric technology has come a long way and these days faux fur really can look like real fur. But I’m still fussy about the quality of the faux fur so I vote yay if it doesn’t look like a pets blanket or human hair. I’d wear an extremely cropped fur vest that has mega vintage integrity. I’ve ordered the black Kenzie style below and plan to wear it with a low contrasting black dress and cream go go boots. I’ll let you know if my experiment works.

How do you vote? Would you wear a shaggy vest? If not, can you appreciate the look on others?

A Festive Cardigan Over Dress Ensemble

I like to layer jackets and cardigans over my short sheath dresses. Sometimes my layered creations are modern classic and at other times more retro and trendy. Every once in a while I like to throw in a more creative and arty combination, just for fun. This outfit is one of the fun ones.

I guess you’ve noticed I’m Team Red. And that’s bright tomato red 99% of the time – one of my very favourite colours. This is a Calvin Klein sleeveless sheath dress I had altered to fit perfectly. I layered over a cascading cardigan that’s virtually the length of the dress in front and scrunched up the sleeves. No waist definition in front but there’s an unexpected party at the back of this outfit. The cardigan’s shorter length, patterned satin inset and waist definition add an edge to the ensemble. This is a Ted Baker cardigan I scored at this year’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and I love it to death for many reasons. Most importantly, it doesn’t make me itch!

I finished off the look with some unusual pairings like Greg’s tie and a layered pearl necklace. I threw in sheer polka dot hose, Clarks Turkish Blend grey suede booties and my good old black and cream Michael Kors satchel. For the chillier weather I would add a knee length trench or coat on top of the whole lot.

When I match black with a bright colour I add white or cream with the mix to soften the effect. It gives me another great reason to wear my pearls. I also chose grey booties instead of black to further soften the integrity of the outfit.

This combination is not as clean and crisp as one of my typical ensembles because there is a lot more going on. Different colours, fabrics, textures, lengths and accessories all competing with each other. But to my eye there is enough harmony to make the outfit work, even though it’s an acquired taste. It’s nice to change things up once in a while.

Long Johns as Pants

Leggings as pants is old news – long johns are where it’s at now! Seriously, this style is sold as pants and looks just like my skiing underwear. Granted, the model shows them worn with a long tunic, which is at least something. But even as leggings they aren’t so fab. Or are they?

The Best Part of Acquiring a New Wardrobe Item

Acquiring a new wardrobe item happens in so many different ways. Sometimes we need the item for a specific occasion and a lot of planning and forethought is involved. Other times we stumble across an item when we least expect to (I often like those impulsive purchases best). But just for the purposes of discussion I’m going describe the process in 7 simple steps.

  1. Scoping out looks and trends and picking the ones that tickle your fancy
  2. Planning the shopping list
  3. Searching for options
  4. Ordering a whole lot of goodies online, or physically purchasing them in brick and mortar stores
  5. Experimenting with the options at home
  6. Deciding which items to keep
  7. Tearing off the tags and putting the new item through its stylish paces

I enjoy all seven steps, but the last one is my favourite. I am wildly excited when a new item makes it into my wardrobe and wearing it as soon as possible is always the goal. I want to wear it NOW. In fact, I have been known to leave a store wearing the item I’ve just purchased. At the very least I want to wear it that night, or the following day. It kills me when I have to wait because it’s an occasion item or the weather isn’t cooperating.

I love, love, love step 1 and it’s the next best part of acquiring  a new wardrobe item. I also really enjoy step 3, searching for new wardrobe items, because I adore browsing through retail stores. However the search side of things can be frustrating when you have a very specific item in mind and can’t find it, or if it’s out of your price range. Experimentation, step 5, is also lots of fun because it pushes my fashion envelope and injects newness into my style.

Over to you. Do you enjoy the process of acquiring a new wardrobe item as much as actually wearing it? Is the excitement over once the search is complete? Do you enjoy the experimentation process best? Or would you gladly dodge the whole search process for a closet full of instantly perfect pieces?
