Weekly Roundup: Spring Jackets

Here’s a selection of dressy and casual Spring jackets, many of which were purchased by clients over the last few weeks. Lots of options for petites. Many of the styles are tailored which is a breath of fresh air. Some styles are fluid, and some boxy. Some items are on sale, so it’s GREAT timing. I have my eye on a few of the jackets on this list that have a Modern Retro integrity to them.

  • BLANKNYC Embroidered Denim Moto Jacket: A Modern Retro '80s style denim jacket with trendy embellishment. Fits a range of body types. Great with jeans, chinos, linen pants, and some skirts and dresses. Quite maximal with the studs, so consider yourself warned.
  • Ann Taylor Marled Bolero Jacket: One of the best business casual jackets for Spring and Summer. Lightweight. The white is a marled cool-toned pearl grey, and the dark blue is just as nice. It's tailored and has stretch for comfort. Looks sharp. Works well on curvier body types. Good on a larger bust. Very streamlining. Fab with all sorts of bottoms and a dress. EXCELLENT on petites.
  • Ann Taylor Textured Fringe Blazer: Super cute Modern Retro Summer tweed blazer. Fab shorter length. Amazing brushed gold hardware and beautifully made. Gorgeous colour and good fit. It has bracelet sleeves so consider yourself warned. Lightweight. Curvier and broad-shouldered girls might need to size up. This one followed me home to replace a very worn out Dutch orange blazer. I love it.
  • Ann Taylor Piped Linen Blend Blazer: A sharp blazer that creates a very flattering hourglass shape. The piping draws the eye up and down for vertical integrity. Extremely good jacket on petites. The tan is nice too. Suits a range of body types. If you're petite and need a sharp modern classic blazer - TRY THIS ONE.
  • Ann Taylor Petite Textured Fringe Trim Jacket: The cream is warmer and earthier in person. Very good jacket for apple-shaped body types. Chic in a Casual Chanel-esque way.
  • Truth & Pride Metallic Tweed Jacket: A fab jacket for a long torso, neck and arms. Looks as good unzipped. Beautifully made.
  • Chino By Anthropologie | Anthropologie Chino Swing Jacket: An arty swing jacket that works best on a long neck and smaller bust. It's very wide so consider yourself warned. But its short length creates just enough structure, as does the crisp collar. Its avant-garde and Modern Retro integrity give it a high longevity factor. Read the rave reviews.
  • Rebecca Taylor Tweed Jacket: A beautifully made item with a high longevity factor. Trendy Classic. It's quite delicate, and best on a longer torso.
  • Cupcakes And Cashmere Barden Fringe Tweed Jacket: The shape works quite well for petite apples with a smaller bust. Nice back frill detailing.
  • Ann Taylor Plaid Tweed Jacket: Classic and sharp. The colours of the tweed are a fantastic mix of warm blues and greens. Quite conservative, but it has its place in the right setting. Or remix it with tough and playful pieces to temper the twee.
  • Ann Taylor Grid Fringe Tweed Open Jacket: A great jacket for petites with a smaller bust.
  • Loft Botanic Blazer: A very fun pattered botanical blazer that fits an assortment of body types. Trendy Classic. It runs at least a size big so size down. Works well on straighter and curvier body types. Fun to mix with stripes and dots.
  • Loft Primavera Jacket: A unique tweed jacket with a playfully Folksy vibe. Good fit on straighter body types. The dark colour tempers the twee. Nice fringe.
  • Zara Textured Weave Cardigan With Frayed Detail Details: You have to be okay with the RATE (rough around the edges) vibe of this jacket. It's square through the shoulder and the fringe makes a large statement. Best on a smaller bust and straighter figure.
  • Boden Amelie Broderie Biker Jacket: Pretty Bomber Fabness. Works on an assortment of body types. Short enough to wear with skirts and dresses. Polished.
  • Topshop Ruffle Crop Jacket: The bell sleeves are wider than you think and make a big statement - especially in these colours. The gathers have a raw edge so you have to be okay with that too. Unlined, and read the rave reviews.
  • Boden Odetta Occasion Coat: Elegant Angelic Fabness. One of the prettiest longer length toppers I've seen. Gorgeous over a sheath dress, cropped flares, or cigarette pants. Fun over jeans too. Runs a size small. Ultra polished.
  • Boden Eve Stripey Coat: A bold jacket to wear with a sheath dress or slim bottoms. I like it over a column of colour. Polished.
  • Boden Amber Jacket: A Modern Retro jacket that looks particularly good fastened in front. Impeccable quality and beautifully made. Colour is more mustard in person. Tailored fit and textured fabric. Might run a size small. Very polished.
  • Banana Republic White Tweed Blazer: A warm-toned tweed cream blazer in a double-breasted style is unique. Looks great left open. Roomy sleeves and dainty fringe. Works well on a rectangular and straighter hourglass figure.
  • Ann Taylor Striped Sweater Jacket: I haven't seen this jacket in person yet, but the vertical stripes are interesting, and the review is good. Fab on an inverted triangle body type.
  • Topshop Crop Gingham Jacket: A RATE (rough around the edges) gingham jacket. The edges of the gathering on the sleeves are raw, so you have to be okay with that. The bell sleeves are wide and make a statement. Unlined, and a fun lightweight jacket. Suits a range of body types. Runs small.
  • Zara Short Jacket With Floral Print Details: A bomber jacket in a unique cut. It's tailored on the shoulders, and has lantern sleeves. It's ideal to wear over a black sheath dress, or with high-rise bottoms. Very trendy and makes a big statement. It's quite short, so not good on long torsos unless you're wearing it over a dress. Runs a little small.
  • Zara Gingham Check Coat With Frill Details: This longer length Spring tweed gingham jacket looks better in person. The midsection frill looks off on the hanger, but redeems itself on the body. It works on an assortment of body types if you don't mind straightening your curves. Very lightweight and easy to throw over lots of types of outfits. Runs a little small. It almost followed me home but it has a RATE (rough around the edges) integrity to it, which made me pause. Not quite right for my polished style.
  • RAFAELLA PETITES Petite Printed One-Button Jacket: Modern Classic Polished Preppy. Great on a curvy hourglass or pear shaped petite.
  • Rebecca Minkoff 'Brooke' Ankle Strap Pump: A great pair of dark blue red shoes with a comfortable fit and stable heel. Soft suede that's kind to you feet. Elegant on the foot. Best on low and regular volume feet. On trend.

Ensemble: Easy & Pretty Spring Tweed

ExampleI have two Spring tweed jackets that I wear quite frequently with jeans and casual trousers at this time of the year. They’re a great weight for Seattle, and a fabulous change from Winter toppers. I enjoy the juxtaposition of the polished, dressy and twee tweed jacket with the relaxed and tougher vibe of jeans or a pair of whimsical trousers.

Adding a graphic tee as seen in the example on the right adds a further playful touch, as would incorporating a fun pair of fashion sneakers.

The collection shows the exact wardrobe items that I used to put together the two outfits that you see in the Polyvore ensemble. I’ve worn each outfit twice, remixing the footwear but using the same bag. Each outfit was worn with bright green specs. The patterned pants version was worn with pearls.

This type of Spring tweed jacket is an acquired taste, so I’m appealing to those who can appreciate the Chanel-esque topper. It’s not without reason that Chanel has been producing the same iconic tweed jacket year after year for decades. It’s versatile, and has a high longevity factor. I don’t seem to tire of wearing the jacket with jeans in the Spring, so it’s become an easy “go-to” outfit formula until the Summer heat.

The components of the ensemble:

Casual Bottoms: Choose a great pair of jeans, patterned pants, or denim skirt. Dressier bottoms can work but you’ll lose the juxtaposition of “twee with tough” and “dressy with casual”.

Layering Top: I chose crisp white and cream Spring pullovers, but feel free to choose a tee, shell or blouse in a colour that works with the jacket if that’s more your thing. A graphic tee looks fab too. Wear it untucked, or semi-tucked.

Spring Tweed Jacket: The outfit formula falls flat without the tweed jacket so no substitutes. Leave it open and pattern mix the tweed with patterned bottoms if you like.

Footwear: Choose anything from dressy pumps and dainty ankle strap shoes, to dressy flats, loafers, oxfords, booties and sneakers. I chose silver ankle strap pumps and white loafers for the blue tweed jacket outfit, and cream booties for the other.

Accessories: Choose a bag that works with the outfit. I chose a vibrant citron satchel to complement my tame neutrals. Add jewellery, eyewear and watch as desired. I LOVE SPRING.

Weekly Roundup: Affordable Tops

These tops, all priced at less than $100, were winners on my clients last week. Some of the items are on sale and available in petites. They can ALL be worn on their own as a stand-alone piece, and some layer better under toppers than others. Be sure to browse the colour options.

  • Loft Vine Mixed Media Tie Neck Shell: A good Summer top for Team Teal with a short waist and shorter neck. Excellent under a fitted blazer.
  • Loft Petite Ruffle Cuff Top: The photo does not do the knit top justice. The fluted sleeve is gorgeous and the high-low hemline drapes really well. Available in three colours. Black looks best. Size down.
  • Loft Lacy Back Peplum Sweater: Classic in front, and party at the back. Super cute. Width is too narrow for pear shaped body types. Good on inverted triangles.
  • Loft Plaid Bell Sleeve Top: A swingy peplum top in a Spring plaid is unique. You have to be okay with the massive volume from the side. Size down. Not good on petites or a large bust.
  • Loft Fan Floral Blouse: A pretty, subtle bohemian blouse in super soft rayon. Covered yet breezy. Fabulous over bootcut jeans. Slimming.
  • Loft Lace Stripe Swing Top: A lacey swing top for dainty pear shaped ladies with narrow shoulder lines to wear with a black pencil skirt or regular black pants. Works well on a wider biceps.
  • Loft Geo Lace Top: You need a white tank top to wear under this darling. Gorgeous on Team Tall. It's not soft, but isn't scratchy either. Size down a size.
  • Karen Kane Asymmetrical Front Overlay Crepe Top: An architectural blouse to wear over bootcuts or cropped straights. Suits an assortment of body types. Size down a size.
  • Karen Kane Lace Trim Asymmetrical Top: A statement sleeveless lace top to wear over bootcut jeans, black ankle pants, or a pencil skirt. Gorgeous drape and super soft. Suits an assortment of body types. Size down a size.
  • Massimo Dutti Textured Weave Knit Sweater: The pullover is a warm cream and not a cool off-white. It's crisp, weighty, and excellent for travel because it's robust and does not crease. It's fluid but tailored through the arms and hips. Best on a long neck and smaller bust. Narrow cut. I bought this top and LOVE it. Perfect for a Seattle Spring.
  • Anne Klein Buckle Wrap Top: An excellent top for a defined waist, long torso and larger bust. GREAT on a curvy gal, but as good on a straighter figure and smaller bust with a square shoulder line.
  • Ann Taylor Leafed V-Neck Matte Jersey Top: The best career wear top for petites I've seen all year. Very good cut. Looks wonderful on its own over cropped black pants, and super under a jacket too. Good for apple shapes. Streamlined but forgiving.
  • Amour Vert 'Angela' Long Sleeve Wrap Front Top: Soft, drapey and sensual. Doesn't fall open in front like you think it might. Suits most body types.
  • Madewell Peekaboo Pom-Pom Top: A bohemian-lite blouse that's much prettier in person. It's also shorter than it looks in the photo. The tops of the sleeves are vented - hence the "peekaboo" description. Luxe soft cotton and fun pom poms. Very breezy and Summery. The tomato red followed me home. Gorgeous with pearls. Size down a size.
  • Banana Republic Stripe Silk Cashmere Elbow-Sleeve Pullover: Luxe fabric, lightweight, slimming and does not cling on the midsection. Fab elbow length sleeves. Good length on tall gals, and excellent on petites in a petite size. Comes in stripes and solids. Layers well under a blazer.

Two Fab Pairs of Casual Pants

Casual clients who want to change things up from jeans and leggings but do not want to wear skirts and dresses are liking the Loft’s Cropped Skinny Chinos, and Caslon’s Cropped Linen Joggers this season.

Loft’s cropped skinny chinos are available in ten colours, go up to a size US18, and are available in petites. They’re thicker than the linen joggers, but breezier than jeans. The pocket linings grin through the light colour options but are adequately opaque for the rest. Pockets that grin aren’t problematic when you wear untucked tops, nor are they all that noticeable in a more relaxed fit.

The cropped skinny chinos are cut quite straight from waist to hip, yet they fit an assortment of body types. Curvier body types might need to go up a size, or have the back of the waist altered. Narrow hips might need to size down. They look best rolled at the hems with casual flats or heels. Sneakers look great with them too. The “vivid blush” and “Summer rain” (which are cranberry and pearl grey respectively), have been popular colours with clients.

The Caslon Cropped Linen Jogger is less structured and a lot more lightweight. They’re suited to pant-wearers who need breezy yet covered casual clothing for very hot climates. They work on most body types, and are available in petites. The collection showcases all four colours with an assortment of flat casual Summer footwear. They are linen, so you have to be at peace with the crease. Good with a fluid untucked or semi-tucked blouse or tee.

Both pants are machine washable, and a denim jacket is a great topper to wear with either of them.
