Outfit Formula: ’90s Inspiration

The ‘90s was an interesting fashion decade because it looked quite different in the beginning to what it did at the end. The early ‘90s were ‘80s inspired, while towards the end it was more ‘70s. Throw in a good amount of grunge, bare midriffs, baggy clothing, velvet ribbon chokers, slip dresses, bias-cuts, dungarees, lug soles, and an extreme amount of black wardrobe items, and Bob’s your uncle.

The ‘90s are trending so if it was your favourite fashion era, milk it. Here are some looks to get you started. I’d say choose any colour palette, but black was the colour of the ‘90s, especially for footwear. So outfits with at least some black skew more ‘90s.

1. Bias-cut Skirt, Aviator, and Chunky Boots

Combine a bias-cut slip skirt with a tee or tailored pullover. Finish things off with an oversized aviator jacket and flat, chunky mid-calf or knee-high stompy boots. The example here is black from head-to-toe, which is very ‘90s. But feel free to create any colour palette. You could also wear a patterned slip skirt, and keep the rest solid black.

2. Long Blazer and Tapered High-Rise Pants

Long double-breasted blazers were big in the ‘90s, and I had a few too. They’ve made a comeback and are topping all sorts of outfit combinations. Here, a long plaid blazer tops a pair of early ‘90s high-rise tapered black pants and white tee. The tucked tee lengthens the leg line from the hips upward which offsets the leg-shortening effect of the long blazer. The pointy-toed boots add an ‘80s touch. Square-toe boots work well too.

3. Plaid Shirts

The grungy plaid shirt of the ‘90s is a Trendy Classic. You can combine it with just about anything. Wear it casually, or tuck it into high-rise bottoms or a skirt for an ‘80s effect. The more ‘90s way means combining plaid shirts with jeans or a denim skirt. Wear it open over a tee or camisole, or button it up with a pile of pearls. Add a beanie, jacket, chunky shoes, and silver jewellery. Or keep it pretty with dressy shoes. Do your own thing!

4. Bootcuts, Blazer and Heels

Bootcut jeans and pants are a late ‘90s vibe that took us well into the ‘00s. Combine them with a dressy top, fitted blazer, and heels like pumps or boots. Or feel free to wear platform sneakers. Sub the dressy top for a tee if that’s more your thing. Add non-neutrals or patterns.

5. Floral Midi with Black Support Act

And last, combine a patterned floral midi dress with black boots and moto jacket. The boots can be chunky, flat, heeled, refined, or combat style. Shorter jackets tend to work well with dresses especially when worn with flat boots. Add jewellery, hats, eyewear and watch as desired.

Plaid and Checked Pants: Yay or Nay

I’m in the habit of referring to all patterns with crossed horizontal and vertical lines as “checked”. Actually, that’s incorrect, because there’s a difference between plaids and checks. Generally, plaids are more complicated cross-hatched designs inspired by Scottish tartans. Checks are simpler than plaids, symmetrical, and resemble miniature boxes that are of equal size. Common checked designs include gingham, buffalo check, micro checks, pin checks, Shepherd’s check, houndstooth and windowpane checks. Common plaids include tartan, black watch, madras, and glen plaids.

We see plaids and checks in every wardrobe item because it’s a classic pattern that never dies — much like polka dots, stripes, florals and animal print. Plaid and checked pants come in any colour combination, and both dressy or casual silhouettes. They can look loud, subtle, or somewhere in between. There are warm and cold-weather versions, low and high-contrast colour combinations, and an assortment of fabrics to choose from. The collection below shows some examples of plaid and checked pants.

Micro check and pin check pants resemble solids from afar, which is why they are sometimes called “false plains.” It means they can function like a solid in your wardrobe, and are particularly easy to combine with bold patterns. If you like the idea of plaid or checked pants, but want to keep the look quiet and subtle, super small checks that look like solids are the way to go. Or a larger check in low-contrast colours.

My pant-wearing clientele and friends who cover a range of body types and sizes are happy to wear plaid and checked patterns because they change up the look from jeans and solid pants. Most prefer their plaids and checks in the neutral, small, low-contrast and subtle spectrum. A few will wear large scale plaids and checks in brights and high-contrast combinations. Dressy and casual plaid and checked pants are equally popular. Skinnies and straight silhouettes are more popular than wider silhouettes.

I’m a very big YAY. I love plaid and checked pants, and have worn them all my life. They are signature to my style, and I am always looking for more pairs. I love them now more than ever as I choose pants over jeans more frequently. I prefer my plaid and checked pants on the dressier side, but enjoy casual versions too. I adore both subtle and loud plaids and checks in neutrals and non-neutrals across a small and large scale. I wear them year round in weather-appropriate fabric.

Here is my current collection:

Yellow TartanCurrently, my plaid and checked pants are subtle and quite neutral, but that’s not deliberate. I usually have at least one bright and bold pair too. One of my all time favourite pair of plaid pants was a bright yellow tartan pair that was a well-loved workhorse. Some of you might remember the outfit on the right from 9 years ago.

I enjoy the variety, versatility, and excitement that a pair of plaid or checked pair of pants can offer. I find them more comfortable and dressy than jeans, and appreciate their pattern-mixing ability. I dress them up with boots, and down with sneakers. Plaids and checks are amongst my favourite patterns, so I don’t get bored of the look. I keep my tops and jewellery simple and quite classic which leaves room to party at the bottom. Plaid and checked pants is one way to go. I’d entertain a fairly loud plaid or checked pants suit too.

Weekly Roundup: Quiet Items

This week’s assortment is a mixed bag of items across quieter colours and patterns. Some of them were winners on forum members and my clients, while others caught my eye and have received good reviews. Be sure to browse all the colour and size options.

  • Lyssé Estella Crop Wide Leg Pants: These are great as far as knitted pull-on pants go. Thick, substantial, and quite wide on the hems. Trendy and Katharine Hepburn-esque. VERY comfy, but do not resemble pyjamas. They will work particularly well on a longer rise and leg. Works on an assortment of straighter and curvier body types because the knit moulds to the body. They were almost mine, but found them too wide and big, and not worth altering because I prefer woven bottoms. The XS fits like a US2.
  • Gallery Long Quilted Parka with Faux Fur Trim: Chic Long Puffer Fabness. The diagonal stitching is visually slimming and the length is GREAT for skirts and dresses. Removable hood. Comes in black.
  • GOOD AMERICAN Drawcord Waist Blazer: A different type of velvet jacket with a defined drawstring waist for structure.
  • Karen Kane Studded Sleeve Blouse: A better than basic long sleeved tee with a vintage vibe. Good on Team Long Arms. Not clingy. Lovely quality.
  • Zara Water Repellent Puffer Jacket: Due to a laundry malfunction, I unexpectedly needed to replace a short navy puffer jacket (a workhorse wardrobe essential for my style). This is what I chose because it fits well, layers well under coats, is water repellent, has gold hardware, looks dressier than an athletic puffer, is well made, AND half of it consists of recycled polyester. Zara is a more sustainable retailer than you might expect, and a much more affordable one. This cost $50. Furthermore, my other Zara jackets are 5 and 8 years old and look great. Zara might not do fab quality knits, but they generally make well-made woven jackets. Keeping these jackets for longer because of superior quality is sustainable too. The fit is on the narrower side, and goes up to an XXL. Gorgeous rich shade of navy.
  • Karen Kane Leopard Print Twist Front Top: A shorter fluid top that you can wear out over skirts and higher rises instead of needing to tuck a longer top to create structure. Soft, cosy, and might run big.
  • Karen Kane Tie Dye Long Sleeve Handkerchief Hem Dress: Easy Tie-Dye Dress Fabness for Team Olive & Black. Fab on an assortment of body types because the fit skims and moves. Very comfy. Substantial knit.
  • Ariat Women's Heritage Lacer II Western Cowboy Boot: Excellent sturdy riding boots that come in a shade of cognac. Good support, insulation and cushioning. Very robust, flexible and comfy. The elastic insert on the ankle keeps things comfy and tailored. I think the kiltie is removable.
  • Linea Paolo Trinity Boot: A NON-BLACK stompy combat boot with a refined edge. The laces allow for a more forgiving fit. Soft, comfy and a little different. Comes in black.
  • Birkenstock Zermatt Genuine Shearling Lined Slipper: Supportive and warm slippers for Team Birkenstock. They are NOT as supportive as regular Birkies though. Flatter footbed. Comes in solids and patterns .
  • UGG Phoebe Wrap Cardigan: A cosy wrap to wear at home while you relax or work. Comes in neutral solids.
  • Honeydew Intimates All American Pajamas: My favourite lounge pants are by Honeydew Intimates so I trust the brand. Soft, comfy, and flattering. Great quality. My pants are 6 years old and look new. This set comes in solids and patterns.
  • Madewell Tie Dye Puff Sleeve Sweater: A trendy 100% cotton pullover for Team Lilac. The fit is fluidly structured and pouffy on the sleeves. Love the polished welt.
  • Madewell Plaid Paperbag Tapered Pants: A good pair of earthy micro checked pants that work well on a longer waist and rise. Good on a curvier bottom half. Wear them casually with sneakers.
  • Frye Women's Billy Inside Zip Bootie Western Boot: Frye boots are excellent quality and versatile Trendy Classics that look good, and go the distance. Their classic and simple cowboy boot appeals to me so I ordered these in pale pink because I've had casual pale pink boots on my shopping list for years. I love the heel height. I improved the fit and comfort with a cushioning insole. They are not for wide feet because of the pointy toe. The ankle fit is quite tailored and does not dig into you as you stride. I'm thinking about whether they will earn a place in my wardrobe. Comes in seven neutrals.
  • Theory Treeca 4 Plaid Crop Pants: Theory does a great job with plaid pants in wool blends. These are mid-rise and work better on a straighter figure. Streamlined but not clingy. The fabric is gorgeously substantial, but might be a little scratchy. I found them scratchy, but am in the minority. Darker in person.
  • TRUE AND CO FRYE AND CO.: Simple and comfy Trendy Classic Chelsea boots that look neat and tidy on the foot. Better on lower volume feet. Comes in three more neutrals.
  • Billabong Go Along Midi Skirt: A knitted midi that moulds to the body giving straight hips a bit of curve.
  • Boden Cornelia Cord Dress: A great little casual corduroy dress to wear with tights and boots. Especially good on petites, and comes in cinnamon. Easy to top with a coat.
  • Boden Caitlin Jersey Midi Dress: Fabulous dress on Team Tall with broad shoulders and a regular size bust. Gorgeous drape and comfortable to wear. Not as clingy as it looks. Comes in a warmer colour combination.
  • Gap Downtown Printed Jacket: A fitted FLORAL puffer jacket in a moody floral is hard to find. Super cute, streamlined, nice heavy weight double zipper, and has leggings to match. Might run small if you prefer a wider fit. It comes in a peachy pink colourway too.
  • Naot Polaris High Top Sneaker: Noats tend to work well on higher volume feet that like support. Very comfy and great quality. These maximal darlings are available in a toffee and zebra too.
  • Oroblu Roses Knee Highs: Patterned knee-highs are very fun, especially when you prefer wearing a range of textures to a range of colours. These come in a warm brown.
  • Boden Water Bottle: Not a quiet pattern item, but fun and different if you like dots and yellow. I want it.

You can see the items alongside my descriptions on the collection page.

Earthy Pattern Mixing for Fall

A new outfit from Jess Jannenga of Elegantly Dressed and Stylish, whom we introduced to YLF in January 2019.

Hosiery, accessories, and footwear are less frequently used to pattern mix an outfit, but are effective nonetheless. The subtle yet strong result here brings lots of visual and textural interest to Jess’ Fall outfit consisting of a black faux leather pencil skirt and fluid taupe cowl neck sweater. The black tights have vertical striped cut-outs that lengthen the leg line, and a lace floral pattern that adds botanical flair. Her heeled pointy-toe booties also lengthen the leg line, while the warm-toned leopard print creates maximal Autumnal pizzazz. Our blogger adds a third pattern into the mix with her checked satchel in two shades of brown that complement the earthy colour palette. Jess’ gorgeous red hair, dangly earrings and oversized, gold-rimmed sunnies add glam and drama. Apricot lipstick, deep purple nail polish, and gold watch are the polished finishing touches.

Spotlight: Knix

Joanna GriffithsFounder Joanna Griffiths launched Knix, a forward-thinking underwear brand, with the goal of transforming an underwear market that had too much frill and not enough function. The company believes that “it’s time that all of us lived unapologetically free.”

Free from judgement. Free from self-doubt. Free to be yourself. That’s why all our products, from the most comfortable wireless bras to super absorbent underwear, are designed to make you feel more comfortable in your own skin.

KnixKnix aspires to producing more sustainably and ethically. Reducing environmental degradation by taking into consideration our impacts throughout production, transportation and consumption is top of mind. For example, their reusable collection of leakproof underwear stops you from relying on disposable sanitary pads when it’s that time of the month. This is not for everyone, but the option is there.

As I browse the collections, I’m very pleased to see a diverse range of models sporting the items. The style sensibility of the brand is simple, sporty, streamlined, and especially great for Team Minimal and those who do not like wearing lace. Despite the basic integrity of the designs, there is a range of colours in each item, and many shades of nude. Because comfort is paramount, foam bra cups are wireless and moulded. Fabrics have a 4-way stretch. Their WingWoman bra claims to be their “sexiest wireless bra” featuring a plunging neckline, and covering side wing, which minimizes side boob and overspill.

Apart from a range of wireless everyday bras with or without padding and lift, Knix also offers everyday panties, sports bras, sports panties, postpartum items, thigh saver shorts, tops, swimwear and loungewear.

Knix Essential Boyshort

Knix WingWoman Contour Bra

At first glance I thought that their offerings were very size-inclusive, but after being able to find exactly one bra in my size, I’m not so sure. Knix goes up to an XXXL in panties and loungewear, and offers F and G cup sizes in most band widths. But most of their bra styles start at a 32. Only the Infinity bra is offered in a 28/30 inch band with a C/D cup size. So if you need a very narrow band width and larger cup size, there isn’t much for you. That said, maybe sizing works a little differently with the Knix brand because the fits are less constricting and structured.

If you’re after 100% cotton or cotton-rich panties, these are not for you. The gussets are 86% cotton. I prefer cotton knickers so I won’t be trying these. Visually, though, I do like the clean and crisp lines of the panties that perfectly match their bras.

Although I love wearing pretty lace undies, I would give this look a bash because I’m awfully curious about the comfort factor. I’ll try some of their bras next year and let you know how my most approximate sizes fit. I can also have a virtual bra fitting with a Knix fitting expert to confirm sizes and bra silhouettes.

Knix advertises on television quite frequently, and I enjoy their empowering messaging. I’ve also heard great things from our forum members about their supportive and very comfortable sports bras. If you have experience with the Knix brand, please share your thoughts in the comments below.
