Loafers are often labeled as dowdy, but not in my book. They can look cool when you choose an interesting style and pair them with a hip ensemble. Very Euro and always stylish.
Loafers tend to look a little more masculine than ballet flats, which makes them the more arty and edgy choice. I’ve always liked the look of loafers and now more than ever, view them as the “new look ballet flat” . So I’m slowly but surely adding fun loafers to my flat shoe collection.
When purchasing loafers, be mindful of the style detailing and think about how you will wear them with other items in your wardrobe. Here are some guidelines that may help:
- Low vs. high vamps: Generally, both high and low-vamped loafers work best with boot cuts, straight leg slacks or jeans. But loafers with low vamps can be worn with skirts, dresses and cropped pants as well. Add fun hosiery into the mix for an eclectic look.

- Sporty vs. retro styles: Styles with chunky rubber soles look more casual and aren’t quite as versatile as retro styles with refined rubber or leather soles. But if you’re after a completely casual look like the ones I got at the Tsonga Factory, then stick to wearing them with jeans.
- Interesting colour or texture: Loafers tend to look extra classic in a flat black and brown leather. This is ideal for those with a classic sense of style. But if you’re after a trendier vibe, choose loafers in a fun colour and interesting texture like the styles you see below.
- Add the attitude: It’s how you wear the ped that counts. One of my favourite ways of wearing the cream Tsonga loafers is with boot cut or straight leg jeans, a black top, scarf and belted burnt orange 70’s style vintage leather jacket with faux fur trim. The drama of the scarf and the edginess of the jacket offsets the classic integrity of the loafers. I dig that type of contrast.
Loafers are also great to wear with trouser socks or thin wool socks, which makes them a super alternative to booties, ankle boots, ballet flats or fashion sneakers. A nice closed shoe option for nippy weather.

An assortment of fun loafers. All the vamps are high except for those on the pewter and purple pairs, so those are the types of styles that you could pair with skirts, dresses and hose.

Angie, kind of off topic but that is a fabulous picture of you featured in today’s post. Really great!

I don’t care much for loafers because I don’t think they look good on my feet. But I love the photo! I used to wear a similar jacket when I was a in high school, I “stole” it from my aunt’s closet together with her bell bottoms. She used to wear them in 1970s.

Yay, I have been eagerly awaiting this post. Can you wear socks with the low vamp loafers too (even with straight legs, where the socks will show)? I need a pair IMMEDIATELY.

(Thanks, agrace).
Oh, Danja! I bet loafers look fabulous on your feet. But I know that you prefer very girly looking shoes. I love girly shoes too, but I have always been drawn to androgynous looks. I guess I like the challenge of making them feel and look girly
Maya, you can wear socks with low vamped loafers as you’ve described, and hip young gals in HK wear the look all the time. They look adorable. But it’s a tricky look to get right. The elements of your ensemble have to work in harmony and you don’t want to look like a Christmas tree. Experiment!

Hallelujah, the loafer post is here!
I am furiously taking notes. I have a pair of funky Patrick Cox loafers in chestnut that have been gathering dust, but I fear the toe is too square. It might be time to take them out and start experimenting, and if not, to start hunting for a new pair. Thank you for the inspiration!

What a great picture of you Angie. The sun is shining on you!
I have never been drawn to loafers. I do like the ones pictured that veer away from the classic penny loafer style, and I like your very simple and smooth Tsonga loafers. Thanks for describing the different kind of loafers and how to wear them. I have always walked right past any thing close to a loafer style, now I will give them a second look, but they’d have to be the kind that I don’t need alot of attitude with.

I think loafers will always look a bit dowdy to me. But I can see now how with a bold look such as Angie’s wearing in the photo, loafers would create a contrast that makes sense.

I can see how the loafer will conjure up a dowdy or preppy look to some people.
Had a pair of Bass brown penny loafers that was so comfy and lasted for years!
Now I sport a sleek grey metallic embossed lizard Joan and David pair – very comfortable and has a slight menswear edge that is fun. Love some of the styles you choose Angie.

I like low vamp loafers, especially the round toed ones because they make my long narrow feet look smaller. My feet tend to look like canoes in high vamp shoes. Those metallic ones on the top left are right up my alley. The ones I have seen are mostly perfectly flat–I like the idea of having a little bit of heel.

Thank you so much for this article Angie! And you look gorgeous in that photo!
As you would say, the penny has dropped. I have never been much into loafers, but after this article I can totally see how they could work and solve the flat shoes issue for the transitional weather. Now I am kicking myself for passing on the purple Me Too ones ( top row right) that I saw at DSW a few weeks ago on clearance for $30.

I am so glad I never got rid of the red Camper loafers I bought in Barcelona nine years ago! They’ve been hiding in the back of my closet for most of that time, because I never really knew how to wear them. Countless times I contemplated giving them away, but I just couldn’t… they are soooo comfortable. This Summer I dug them up again and I have been wearing them quite often ever since. I’m definitely a loafers convert;-) And I’m extra glad I decided to buy them in red instead of the brown I first saw in the shop.
I’ll definitely be adding another pair to my wardrobe (I adore that specific colour green in the top row, they’ve been on my wish list for ages, just because of that colour).
P.S. You look fantastic in that picture Angie, quite glamorous!

See I knew loafer were way cool!!! I have always loved them and my hubby bought me a pair of electric blue suede “Prada” loafers last year. I place parenthesis on the Prada cause although they have the logo, I am suspiscious. But anyhoo, l love them and think they are edgy even though most of my friends don’t get it.

Wonderful pic, Angie! Attitude is the canvas AND the icing
I go through periods of love-hate with loafers and presently I am back in love again. They are perfect for work and running around as MOTG.This season does have alot of fun options.Turns out that my one plaid purchase this fall was a pair of grey plaid loafers that I adore, go with everything and are super comfortable. Thanks for the post!

I have a pair of Claudia Ciuti blue metallic loafers w/a bow on them.
They are darling.
I also notice that when I read the comments section, I can’t page down, it just jumps to the bottom, I have a Mac and Mozilla, but what a pain to have to scroll, instead of pressing the space bar to just page down and read posts.

I just don’t get loafers. Or moccasins. Love how they look on others, but they mystify me … I have no idea how to incorporate this shape of shoe into my look.

Just when I was about to toss out some of my shoes, you manage to come up with a new/old look! But, what I really appreciate is the story behind the Tsonga shoe company. Thanks for giving us the real story behind the product.

Oh fiddle sticks! I thought I had the flat shoe dilemma sorted and then bosh another option. Out of curiosity is the T in Tsonga silent?
Your photo looks like it was taken on a glorious autumn day, I love how colours pop in the autumn light.

I got a pair of Cole Haan driving loafers recently. They are more casual but I love them! Thanks for the tips– now I want the red DP pair too.
One question– are loafers okay with skinnies?

I”m sure they are fab on you Angie, but I’m gonna pass on them. Funny, just last night my husband and I were trying to explain penny loafers to the boys. They just couldn’t understand why anyone would put pennies in their shoes.

Yay! This is just the sort of post that I have been hoping to see. I’m going to be checking out these options right away!

Great picture! I’m sitting here trying to figure out what I’d wear the purple loafers with. Love the color. They might be the cutest shoes I’ve seen in a while.

I love loafers. I’m tall, so people get a bit pissy when they see me in heels in a way that inconveniences me as they always want to ask if I think I’m tall enough (I usually respond no) or if I’m worried about getting a man (As that really matters to them).
Either way, there’s only so many times you can wear ballet flats before you want to hurl yourself and your freshly baked cookies overboard. Loafers help by diversifying up the amount of dressy responsible adult shoes I can wear in situations that I meet new or fairly new people that aren’t used to the fact that I really don’t mind being Godzilla in Tokyo because of my shoes. That and loafers look unique on my feet because people think they’re dowdy and preppy and not something Sciencey-cool me should wear.

It has been many years since I have worn loafers….but the day will come again:)….

Hooray! I dig my loafers too! I got a pair of patent loafers from Aersoles, and they are unbelievably comfy. I am going to work on creating an outfit with attitude.

Loafers rock! I *heart* my Tod’s loafers, which I got for a steal at a designer consignment store… they are very pale tan, and cut a bit more masculine than what you might think of as the typical tod’s driving shoe/loafer, which I find look a bit prissy and tapered and old ladyish. Mine look more ‘arty and edgy’ as Angie puts it.
Have been a big Tod’s fan since… I bought ONE great pair of black patent Tod’s ballet flats this year instead of 2 or 3 (or 4) pairs of inferior shoes (do the sums and it works out cheaper) and I’ve never been so happy with my shoe wardrobe in my life.

Great post, Angie! I love loafers, I just wore mine on Sunday.

Halleluja! Thanks Angie, you have just solved my “but I want to wear socks AND cute shoes” dilemma! Loafers are back baby, now I’m out to find the right few pairs whilst trying to avoid the dowdy look they often portray.

I love all pairs. Well, except for the snake-skin one. Those look like something a pimp would wear.

I love loafers. I’ve been eyeing some really cool patent leather styles for quite some time now!

Such a cute picture. You look super fresh in the sunshine.

What BlondeAmbition said – yay! We can wear shoes with socks after all.
Hmm…now I need loafers too. Just got a few pairs of ballet flats recently, and the weather’s turned all cold. Perhaps this loafer idea will work
See, none of my pants are PPL yet for the few heels I have, and of course – the ballet flats are meant to be worn sock-less.
This is good..I can keep looking for good jeans/pants in the right length, but in the meantime, perhaps a fun pair of loafers will do the trick.

Great picture! I love loafers, and I love the pewter pair on the top left corner!

Do you think you could explain the difference between loafers, brogues and oxfords? I get these styles mixed up a lot. Also, I love how Kate Moss wears her loafers, ultra Euro-chic.
