You guessed it. Another bit of 80’s flair that’s made a comeback. The double-wrap skinny belt brings back fond memories of having plastic studded versions in cobalt, red and white 25 years ago. I loved the look back then and I’m all for it again right now.
You can wrap the belt high or low around the waist depending on your preference. I like how it adds an interesting layering and textural dimension to an outfit and it’s certainly helped my old knitwear feel like new. The double wrap belt works well over shirts, knitted tops and dresses too. It is more comfortable than the single wrap skinny belt because it slouches more loosely around the body.
I recently purchased a skinny black studded style from Express, which was inexpensive by the time I had used a discount coupon. It didn’t fit so I first cut five inches off the end of the belt and then did my usual make-it-fit trick. I’m pleased with the outcome. The year is young, but the double-wrap belt is my favourite accessory of 2009.

Double-wrap belts are available in a range of price points (from Forever 21 to Bloomingdales). They work quite well on short-waisted women when worn a little lower down on the waist than shown in these pictures.

I bought the Express belt in cream but ended up returning it because I couldn’t make it fit. Do you just have a shorter piece without studs at the end? Anyway, then I found essentially the same belt by Michael Kors for $10 and have determined to make it work though I’m not sure yet since I can’t cut off the end on this one.

I actually cut a large portion of the belt off, Patience and then “looped it through” as I’ve shown in a previous post (I linked to that post here). You can make any skinny belt fit that way because the buckle is small enough to be manipulated.

Do you mostly wear this belt over knitwear, such as a boyfriend sweater? What are your favorite ways to wear it?

At the moment, I’m in knitwear everyday – even if I wear a shirt, there’s a piece of knitwear over it. So I guess my favourite ways to wear the double wrap belt at the moment is over fine gauge knitwear. I don’t wear knitted tops so I personally won’t be wearing them over those, but when it gets warmer, I’ll be popping this belt over blouses, tunics and dresses. I hope that answers your quezzie, Laura.

I have been looking at the Express studded belt too, though I haven’t tried it on yet. What kind of fitting problems are there with it – is it too long? It is the next thing on my to get list.
J Crew also has a patent one that I am planning to get in cream for spring.
Angie, I am surprised to her you do not wear knitted tops. Any particular reasons why that is so, other than that you are a blouse girl ?

Thank you for this post, Angie. You’ve inspired me to try a double-wrap skinny belt especially as I’m short-waisted. I’ll bet Tanya can wrap that Express belt three times around her tiny waist!

I love it too! I want the studded brown belt you show above!

How about double-wrapped belts for short-rise women? [as opposed to short waisted] I had a double-wrapped belt from the 80’s that I still own…although tragically, it doesn’t go around me twice now. I guess I’ll have to upgrade, I thought this trend was pretty cool back in the day….

Precisely Tanya, the belts are often too long if you wear a small size. But nothing that can’t be fixed. And actually I stand corrected. I have one giraffe print mesh top that I love and wear a lot. I also have the same blue fly wrap top as you, but that doesn’t come out very often. It’s like you said, I’d much prefer to wear a blouse, shirt of piece of Summer knitwear. And when it’s hot, I’m in a dress.

Kristers, you’ll probably want to wear your belt in the position that’s shown if you’re short in the rise. I hope you go for it. Tanya and Joy, I hope you go for it too. There aren’t that many inexpensive ones around at the moment, but give it time. It’s early days for Spring 2009.

I have fond memories of this sort of belt…. I may give it a try again!

That is such a cool look… Except belts are not my thing

Oooh, I’ve been lusting after a double-wrapper since I saw one on the Eileen Fischer site in September. That studded number is perfection …

If we find one of these during our NYC trip, perhaps you can clarify for me how to wear them on a short torso. The problem with being short-waisted is that I don’t have enough room on my waist to move the belt further down. It ends up around an unflattering spot, or worse, around my hips. Maybe the key is having the elusive flat tummy.

Love this look! It’s on my shopping list now.

Maya, I feel your pain. I do have one skinny belt (in silver), but it doesn’t come out all that often because it’s so hard to get it to sit right.

I have the same situation, Mai. I like how skinny belts look on me (sometimes), but by mid-day I find them so annoying I end up removing them. I imagine it’s less of an issue when the belt has a proper resting place. Anything low on the waist sits around my tummy–not a good look.

You’ll look splendid in this look Shiny and Julia. I’m glad you’re going for it (or wearing the look again to be more accurate).
Maya, we’ll experiment together in NY, cause you look great in a skinny belt.

I think I actually owned the black one.

Weren’t these in about 6-7 years ago? At least in Europe? I have a white studded one that I bought then. I was thinking of getting rid of it, I am glad I didn’t.

I like the wrap around belt look. (I love belts.) Does it stay crisscross or does it tend to bunch together around the waist? (Does that make sense?) I just wonder with a small waist and curvy hips, it would bunch together at the waist and not have the same look.

I know exactly what you mean, Eva. You have to wear this belt quite loosely for both belts to stay adequately “separated”. Mine does not bunch in the middle when I wear it and I like my criss-cross at the back. There is only one way to find out my dear, Eva.
Bella, we were living in Europe 6 -7 years ago and I do not recall this trend then unless I missed it! I’m glad you do not get rid of your belt.

I love this look. Most belts are too big on me though, in spite of the face that most sizing charts say that I’m beyond XS in the chest and hips and S or M in the waist.

Can any age wear the skinny wrap around belt?
