Black-black skinny jeans have arrived

July 29th, 2008

Haute Couture windows in Paris, London and Barcelona have displayed black-black skinny jeans for the past year. This trend was destined to filter down to prêt-a-porter collections and mainstream fashion in a matter of months. It has arrived.

Black-black skinnies are black. Not a faded black, dark grey or blue-black. They’re a true rich black which is as Gothic and punk rocker as it gets. I bypassed the grey denim trend last year, but feel I can do the black-black skinny jeans thing again.

I bought a pair a few weeks ago and I’m thrilled with them. Black-black skinny jeans are my preferred way of wearing black pants (I don’t own black slacks). They look great with ballet flats, chunky heeled red patent pumps and black booties. I also plan to wear them tucked into the slouchy chestnut knee-high boots that I hope to purchase later this year.

This is the next big denim trend. I highly recommend the look if you love skinny (or straight-leg) jeans. Trend setting YLF forum members Ana, Patience and Tanya are ahead of me. They’ve been sporting their black-black skinny jeans for a while! Thanks for the inspiration ladies. You look fab.

I bought the Marc Jacobs style on the left and they fit like a dream. It’s a super sleek and slimming look with black heeled booties.

Wow, thanks for the mention and wonderful compliment Angie! *blushing*

I have had my black-black skinnies for about two years, and I got them simply because I liked them, not because of the trends or anything like that. I find them really versatile, and comfier then denim skinnies, because the material is very soft.

Now I have a question on wearing them with black ’stylized’ biker leather jacket. What’s the right silhouette and length ( and maybe even color) for a top to wear under the jacket with these pants? Something loose and flowy, and how long, or ?
And would these work with black booties, or it is to much black? Thanks!

My inner Goth/punk kid is definitely drawn to this look. If I could find a pair of straight legs that would fit over my calves, I’d seriously consider getting some!

Thanks, Angie! I’ve got the ones in the middle and I actually had them hemmed to clamdiggers so I could wear them now. I am planning on getting another pair to keep full length for when it gets cooler. I also realized the same thing– that denim works better for my lifestyle than slacks.

Angie,
This look is really cool! I tried getting the LAMB jeans at the NAS, and they were out of my size by 12p on the first day of sale! I am on the lookout for the black skinny jeans. What kinds of tops would you wear with these?

My new black-black skinnies are being shortened because they came with a 36 inch hem. I can’t wait to fetch them and wear them. Hopefully this afternoon. I’m going to wear my white and cream AF blouses with them. Love the contrast. That’s how I like the look best Tanya. I’d stick to white or cream if you add the biker jacket. I’m temped with cobalt blue and pearls too. Ohhh! I’m excited.

The black Franco Sarto booties work really well with black skinnies. It’ like having an uber long black legs!

You’re right Tanya, they are softer. I can see them becoming my favourite jeans pronto. Lannie, you’ll have to give in to your inner punk rocker.

Black-black skinnies are on your shopping list Patience. I know that makes you happy.

Thanks for the tips on the tops Angie! If the jacket is fitted and cropped, should the top be longer and not so fitted, i.e. blousy versus fitted knit? Sorry for this many questions, I really like the idea of this look and would like to get a few tops to make it work.

Your suggestions of cream, cobalt and pearls sound yummy. I’m sure you’ll look under-stylish in it.

Angie, did you say you would be wearing yours with chestnut colored boots? What about a maroony brown color? would that work as well? I’d like to get some flat boots to wear with jeans and am considering a color other than black.

I love skinny jeans. I’m a fab plus size (14) and couldn’t find any skinny jeans that fit well. However, I found black and indigo skinny jeans at Ashley Stewart. I can’t wait to wear them with my peep-toe booties!

You’re all fab and stylish! I love the look of these black skinnie jeans.
Thankyou Angie for this blog and sharing your knowledge and talent with us.

I’m a late-comer to skinnies, and still a little gunshy. I know you say they work for all figures, Angie, but I’m still plenty body conscious in mine and nowhere near ready to lay down cash for a second, black pair. But I definitely appreciate the look!

Thank you Angie! I love my black skinny jeans! I actually bought them a couple of years ago (I think Tanya and I have the same pair), but couldn’t really get my head around how to wear them before coming to the site. Now I wear them so much, I think I’m going to try to pick up a second pair. Skinnies are my new favorite denim silhouette, so I am definitely planning on expanding my collection.

If you are new to skinny jeans, black or dark denim is a great color to start with. Give it a try! :)

I’m a women’s size 18 and over 50. Can I get away with this look or is it too young?

These look amazing. I wouldn’t wear them myself but I love the idea.

They look great! I’d grab one when it comes to the main stream stores like AT or ATL where most of my jeans came from.

I’ve just fetched my altered black skinnies. Wow, this takes me back to the 80’s. I never thought I’d be doing this again. They are delicious.

Tanya, both a fitted and voluminous blouse or knitted top would work under the biker jacket. Longer is good if the jacket is cropped.

I see a whole range of possibilities Nafisa. Other than a black top, the world is your oyster with black skinnies. I like the idea of white, cream, yellow, red and cobalt tops best. Tartan too. Oh my. SO ’80’s.

Paulajewelry I think you could wear this style. My Mom is FAB at 60 (and wears a womens 18) and loves her skinny jeans. She wears then with tunic tops and flats.

Angie, thank you for this post! The idea of using these black black jeans instead of black pants as a wardrobe staple gave me an “ah ha” moment. These will be more likely to be flattering on my body. I will try both skinny and straight leg styles.

Yes, Julie, I hope to match black skinnies with chestnut boots and a cream or white top. Maroon sounds like it would work too.

Try a straighter leg, Paulajewelry. I have no doubt these will do the trick.

I can’t wait to hear the verdict Joy!

I have always loved very black jeans, but I’m sticking with straight-leg styles. The problem with black jeans is that you have to replace them often because they don’t stay very black for long. After a few months of washings, they are already noticeably fading, and faded black jeans don’t look good to me at all.

I love dark black jeans. I have a pair from last year that I never wore that much so hopefully I’ll wear them. My other pair is faded and might never be worn again.

I love skinny jeans, especially black ones. Love to wear them with knee high boots and a sexy top for clubbing.
