Four Ways to Liven Up a Winter Wardrobe

Winter is here and for many of us that means cold grey days with rain, ice, and very little sunshine. Black and grey from head to toe makes my mood even drearier, so I create my own sunshine by adding four ingredients to my Winter wardrobe. I can wear these items all the way into our cold and dreary Spring.

1. Bright Coats and Accessories

Wearing bright wool coats makes me happy. There’s something about seeing them against a sea of black clothing and a grey landscape that makes them extra punchy and positive. Wear them with a neutral outfit if wearing one bright at a time is more your thing

If you prefer neutral outerwear, add bright accessories like scarves, hats, gloves and bags into the Winter mix. It’s a more subtle approach and less of a commitment than the bright coat strategy.

Also, brights don’t need to mean acidic citron, shocking pink, apple green, turquoise, or tomato red. Choose your brights, which might mean a rich cranberry or ruby red, deep purple, earthy mustard, burnt orange, teal or cobalt blue.

2. Shades of White

Never underestimate the power of white wardrobe items throughout the year, and I’m talking about all shades of white. From bright optical white, to off-white, bone, cream and stone. White adds brightness, crispness, lightness, and a sense of modern chic to a wardrobe. Wear white jeans, wool trousers, chunky knitwear, leather jackets, puffers and wool coats in Winter. Sport a Winter white bag, scarf, hat, gloves or footwear. Adding shades of white to a Winter wardrobe is a great way of keeping it neutral, yet bright.

If shades of white are too light for you, remix light neutrals like taupe and tan into your Winter wardrobe. They lighten and liven an outfit in a more subtle way.

3. Pastels

Wear pastels in Winter. Wear them in Winter weight fabrications with brights, shades of white, and other neutrals. This is a relatively new Winter wardrobe injection for my own style, and I’m not looking back. I added blush pink last year, and light blue and mint this year instead of saving those shades for Spring and Summer.

4. Ink Blue

Ink blue and navy (lighter than ink blue) is softer than black. It can be worn as a replacement for black, or with black. Ink blue looks particularly good with white and grey. It’s also fab matched with cognac footwear, bags and belts. One of my favorite casual Autumn and Winter combinations this year has been an ink blue and grey chunky high-low turtleneck worn with white boyfriend jeans, ink blue booties, and topped off with an ink blue blazer and military coat. A pastel turquoise clutch is the final touch.

Working with clients in Winter, I realized that not everyone feels the way I do about livening up their cold weather wardrobes by adding brights, whites, pastels, and ink blue into the mix. Some clients want to wear grey and black all Winter long. They might add the odd dark eggplant, olive, or teal but that’s it. They wouldn’t dream of wearing a bright coat, a pastel bag, or white jeans until Summer time, if at all.

Over to you. Do any of the ways I like to liven up my Winter wardrobe resonate with you? Or are you a dark neutrals gal through and through?

Great Tip For Dry Facial Skin

Last week I had a free skin consultation at the medical spa attached to my dermatologist’s office. The aesthetician knew about my tendency for extra dry facial skin and knew about the skincare products I was using (these were suggested by my dermatologist). It was an excellent experience and I wish I had done it much earlier.

The aesthetician recommended two new products to add to my simple skin regimen of cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen. One was an addition and the other a replacement for the vitamin C serum I’ve been using for a couple of years. But the aesthetician’s best tip was to NOT cleanse my face in the morning. Splashing it with water and applying the right products thereafter retains its natural oils and results in a more dewy complexion. Cleansing my face to remove dirt and makeup in the evening was more than enough for my skin type.

The thought of not cleansing my face in the morning sounded awfully grimy to me. But I did what was recommended, and I’m amazed at the positive results. My facial skin looks and feels much more hydrated, soft and moist. And since I love the look of shiny skin, I welcome the extra shine that has accompanied the new one-cleanse-a-day routine.

You too might like to leave out the morning cleanse if your facial skin tends to feel dry. It’s an especially good idea in Winter when the heat is on 24/7 for months at a time, drying out your skin even further.

Tailored and Lacy for the Holidays

I enjoy creating a special holiday outfit each year. Last year I was cozy and casual in gold jeans and an oversized chunky knit pullover. The year before I wore a long sleeved body con metallic midi and red shoes. And the year before that I wore a ball gown and moto jacket with a pile of pearls. This year I’m in the mood for something ladylike and tailored. Not too dressy, but not as casual as last year.

I used to be more of a frock than a skirt gal, but that preference has changed. I love the two easy throw-on-and-go Kamalikulture dresses that I added to my wardrobe this year, but overall I have enjoyed skirts more. I particularly like the creative process of remixing skirts with a variety of tops.

And although I prefer wearing full skirts to pencil skirts, I could not pass up on the opportunity to purchase the lace skirt of my dreams. It’s taken four years to find one that was knee-covering, woven, black with a non-black lining, sufficiently tapered at the side seams, scalloped at the hem, non-scratchy and well made. As soon as I stopped looking for it, my skirt found me. I love it when that happens.

I wanted to wear a soft knitted pullover because it’s warm, cuddly, and a nice juxtaposition against the formality of the lace skirt. I had several options: a fuzzy light blue cropped sweater, fluid ink blue turtleneck, chunky cream cropped cabled sweater, or basic formfitting black turtleneck, all of which work well with the skirt. But Greg and I liked the combination of this short-sleeved, sequined and beaded black cashmere turtleneck best because it’s a little dressier, different to my other black turtlenecks, and worked better as a column of colour under my pink man coat. It’s slightly fluid, which looks updated against the highly structured skirt.

It’s unusual for me to expose my entire forearm at this time of year when I prefer to cover up. It was also not my intention to wear this much black for the holidays. But the texture-rich surfaces of both the pullover and skirt, plus the extra forearm skin, break up the expanse of the black.

Fine gauge black micro fishnets are still my favourite choice of hosiery for the holidays because they finish off the leg line in a polished, yet interesting way. After the addition of the hose I was absolutely done with black. That’s why the outfit’s finishing touches are gold, mint and shocking pink.

I initially wanted to match the outfit with Boutique 9’s Mirabelle champagne pointy toe pumps because they were sleek, simple and elongating. But the dainty ankle straps on the Calvin Klein Baishas stole my heart. Not as minimal and leg lengthening, but awfully pretty and a lot more comfortable. So I went with those and I’m glad I did. They look great with boyfriend jeans, which I’ll sport to another holiday occasion with fuzzy cropped pullover, gold belt and clutch.

I chose Kate Spade’s New York radio Samira clutch as my party bag because it’s a playful juxtaposition against the classic lace pencil skirt, and provides a little colour. My shocking pink man coat provides extra colour, which makes me even happier. The versatility of my new pink man coat has been great. It works as well with jeans and Converse sneakers as it does over business casual and dressy attire. Specs, wedding ring and watch are all I need in the accessory department.

I have many opportunities to wear party outfits this holiday season, which has made it extra fun. I’m sticking to party separates and remixing this lace skirt and my Alice & Olivia black trousers with different tops and toppers. I’ll also be dressing up jeans with a festive sweater from time to time. But this is the outfit I’ll be wearing for the first two bashes. Let the festivities begin.

November Recap: Party Time

This year I decided to start the party wear coverage a little early and as a result the November newsletter turned into a bumper issue on party items and outfits. It also highlights my outfits, the two outstanding outfit bloggers we featured and two posts I wrote on outfit creation.

If you aren’t yet a subscriber, please consider signing up. Note that this applies to forum members too, because the newsletter and the forum are two separate signups.

When you sign up for the newsletter you can also ask for daily email updates for the YLF blog and finds area, but this is optional.

Finally, you can see the November newsletter here if you didn’t receive the email version that went out this morning.

A note for Gmail users: If you use the relatively new gmail Inbox Tabs, then the newsletter email message might get caught under the “Promotions” tab. So if you are using gmail in your browser and can’t find the newsletter, look for it there. If this happens to you and you would like YLF email to come to your “Primary” tab in future, then just grab the message with your mouse and drag it into the “Primary” tab. Here is some more info on Gmail’s new tabbed interface.
