Link Love: The Top Nail Trends for F/W 2017

Nail art trends and nail polish colours change with the seasons too. Let’s have a look at what’s “in” for Fall/Winter 2017 and beyond.

Nadya is happy to see another plus size clothing collection, especially one like White House Black Market’s new line that seems geared towards modern classic style.

After reading these shopping tips by Virginia Woolf, Lady NIB thought to herself that apparently fashion was never easy.

On the forum, we’ve been talking about how we sometimes don’t feel happy with our current style anymore. On that theme and that perpetual dissatisfaction we all feel at times, Approprio points out it’s worth remembering that fashion is, and always has been, something of a deformed thief.

Angie’s not sure how crease-resistant these impressive folding techniques are, but the tidy and compact piles they create are compelling!

Weekly Roundup: Fall Items

2017 is one of the better Fall shopping seasons. There’s lots of good stuff across a wide assortment of colours, silhouettes, lengths, dress codes, textures and fabrics. I’m having one of my best Fall and Winter shopping seasons ever, and most of my clients are extra excited about their refreshed cold-weather wardrobes.

This week’s assortment covers a large spectrum of wardrobe items and sizes. Remember that items are available in multiple colours.

  • Vince Camuto Windswept Bouquet Bell Sleeve Blouse: A flouncy blouse with exuberant sleeves that drapes like a dream. More structured in person and works well on a larger bust. The shorter length of the sleeves is practical. Also available in regular sizes.
  • Vince Camuto Split Bell Sleeve Blazer: A blazer with split bell sleeves is unique and brilliant layered over a bell-sleeved blouse. Bell Squared FTW. Sleeves can be shortened with ease. Works well on a larger bust. Also available in regular sizes.
  • Kate Spade New York Women's Cheetah 3 Pack Sock Set: These are my new favourite socks because they are thick, cosy, fun and cotton-rich. If you don't like wearing wool socks like me, try these. They also come in a red and burgundy colourway. I have both sets of colours.
  • Mango Floral Embroidery Coat: Fab Tomboy top coat with yummy embroidery. Sleek, forgiving and hangs well. Works on a range of body types.
  • Mango Planet Embroidery Scarf: Solar System Fabness in navy blue.
  • Mango Furry Hooded Parka: Olive parkas are extremely popular and available, but versions with faux fur cobalt lining kick things up a notch. Forgiving fit, and quite the statement.
  • Mango Embroidery Snake-effect Bag: Adorable small holiday bag with a strap. One for Team Bird Watchers.
  • Mango Checkered Wool-blend Coat: Checked Tomboy peacoat with a trapeze back. Quirky and fun.
  • Nic + Zoe Seamed Riding Jacket: A comfortable fitted knitted blazer that is a great cardigan substitute. The princess seams create vertical integrity, and streamline the silhouette. Read the rave reviews.
  • Mango Contrast Hooded Parka: A boxy hooded parka with an architectural edge. You have to be okay with the voluminous side view. Very 2017.
  • Anthropologie Floral Tights: Try these under a holiday dress instead of black tights.
  • Boden Bridget Clutch: A roomy and large velvet clutch that can be dressed up or down. It has a chain shoulder strap if you prefer not to clutch a clutch. The olive is as fab as the cranberry.
  • Madewell Medium Perfect Leather Belt: A simple jeans and trouser belt that is extremely soft and lightweight. It lies very flat against the waist. The gold metal buckle is subtle. All the colours are nice. I bought the black to match my new floral oxfords.
  • Gabby Skye Ruched Crushed Velvet Dress: An easy, on-trend and comfortable holiday dress for a larger bust and/or shorter neck.
  • Alfani Houndstooth-Check Ruffle-Sleeve Blouse, Created for Macy's: A ruffled-sleeve blouse that works well on an apple shape with a larger bust and strong shoulder line. Comfortable and with weighty drape. Excellent with black bottoms. Crease-resistant. Good for travel.
  • J.Crew The 2008 Andover peacoat in Italian wool: If you're after a purple peacoat, try this darling. An absolute classic that transcends the trends. Best on a straighter figure.
  • J.Crew Faux-fur leopard vest: Faux Fur Vest Fabness. Size down.
  • Madewell Plaid Tie-Neck Shirt: An interesting pussy bow blouse in an earth-toned check. Casual, yet dressier than a regular plaid shirt. Nice drape.
  • Via Spiga Malena Slip-On Sneaker: Sleek and sporty fashion sneakers that work on higher volume feet. Very comfortable. All the colours are nice.
  • Eliza J Metallic Floral High/Low Skirt: A GREAT high-low skirt to wear to a dressy event. Add a sleek black top, a cropped moto jacket or denim jacket, a pair of dainty shoes and a clutch, and you're good to go.
  • Zara Wool Coat with Wraparound Collar: An ink blue cropped trapeze coat for LONG necks and arms.
  • Sam Edelman Lulie: Fabulous Modern Retro low-heeled party shoes for low volume feet and narrow ankles. Cushioning and soft. Comfortable. The buckles might catch your ankle bone, but a little moleskin on the inside of the buckle solves the problem. They look most festive in pink velvet. Comes in wide widths.
  • Madewell Velvet Bell-Sleeve Dress: This is supposed to be a dress, but works fabulously well as a holiday tunic over pleather leggings. Best on broad shoulders and on those who can fill out the silhouette.
  • Madewell Embroidered Cutoff Sweatshirt: SUPER soft embroidered sweatshirt for regular height gals and petites. Too short for tall gals.
  • J.Crew Gold half-hoop earrings: Interesting D-hoop earrings. Large but quite delicate.
  • Aquatalia 'Pheobe' Weatherproof Genuine Calf Hair Pump: A cool-toned leopard pattern is hard to find, and these pumps are weatherproof. Moderately comfortable. Well made.
  • Boden Irene Ponte Dress: A fun frock for Team Curvy with a Defined Waist. But tends to work quite well on rectangular body types too. The fabric is weighty and heavy, AND lined. Really good drape. Lots of colours and patterns. Nice length too.
  • Chelsea28 Velvet Midi Dress: A '70s inspired velvet dress for Team Curvy. Excellent in motion. Could be fun combined with a pair of statement hose or black pleather leggings.
  • AGL Mary Jane Pump: A beautifully made dark pewter Mary Jane to wear with just about anything. Nice with hosiery. Super soft leather and can work with bunions. Good with black dresses.
  • White House Black Market Studded Belt: The burgundy is darker in person. Well made and amazingly unique amidst a sea of skinny neutral belts. It perfectly complements my new Bordeaux booties - so it followed me home. Size down a size.
  • Pelle Moda Uma: Fab low-heeled ankle strap pumps for higher volume feet. They were too wide for me, but super comfortable and pretty.
  • Eliza J Floral Jacquard Midi Skirt: A bold flared skirt WITH pockets. Impeccable fit and drape. Gorgeously dramatic and Modern Retro. Extremely comfy and in a great knee-covering length. Comes in a variety of patterns and colours. It's a lot of skirt so consider yourself warned. Not good on a short waist or apple-shaped body type.
  • Vince Camuto One-Button Blazer: A streamlined blazer that creates a sleek and slim effect. Lots of vertical integrity. Good on apple, inverted triangle and hourglass body shapes. Works well on a larger bust. Read the rave reviews.
  • White House Black Market Slim Jeans: On a whim, I tried these "Slim Jeans" from WHBM. They are perfect, and more affordable than premium denim. Tailored. Dark. Polished. Flattering. Versatile. Don't cut off my circulation. Plenty of length. Don't bag out. Mid Rise. Comfortable. Not nearly as skinny in person. NOT body-con. Excellent with heels up to 1.5 inches that I like to wear. Very practical for wet Seattle. Size down a size if you need a narrow fit. I sized down. My vote for best jeans of the year. Comes in longs and petites.

Outstanding Outfit Bloggers

Casual Chic & Colourful in Haarlem

Greetje Kamminga (63) lives in Haarlem, near Amsterdam, and works as an advertising manager at a bank. She documents her outfits on her blog, No Fear of Fashion. Greetje is an ace at doing Casual Chic. Her colour-rich style is feminine, fun, and polished. She mixes Modern Classics with trendy, Sporty Luxe and some avant-garde elements, and likes to jazz up her outfits with arty statement necklaces.

“I have become more daring. I now know better what the proportions of my items should be, although I am still learning. Things like length of tops combined with trousers. That length makes a big difference when you are wearing cropped trousers or long trousers, skinny trousers or flared. There is even more colour in my wardrobe. I know which colours suit me and which don’t. Sometimes I choose to ignore it by wearing black and white. Bad for my complexion but such a good combination. I’m an inverted triangle, not the most difficult shape but you still need to know what to emphasize and what to ‘hide’. Fitted jackets are my best friends.”

Greetje - 1

A polished casual look with comfy slip-on sneakers for a busy day walking around Paris. Greetje is wearing an unstructured silk shirt dress over black cropped skinny trousers. The wide vertical stripes make it a statement piece. The black stripe blends in with the trousers, while the pale yellow stripe complements our blogger’s blonde hair. Her black slip-on sneakers are adorned with fringe and oversized tassels, which amps up the polish. The bag was meant to be worn with this outfit as the colours of the beautiful rubber and canvas tote echo the stripes perfectly.

Greetje - 2

I call this slouchy casual with a ’50’s space-age touch. Greetje is sporting relaxed-fit jeans with an oversized V-neck sweater in a fab shade of emerald. Semi-tucking the sweater and adding a belt to the jeans tempers the volume of the jumper. Our 5’9″ blogger’s calf-length moto-style boots read like pewter here, but are actually a light golden colour. They give the look an unexpected playful touch. Tucking the jeans into the wide shafts also provides structure. She has knotted a long black and gold necklace with crystal beads — another fun Paris find — which, together with the V-neckline of the sweater, creates vertical integrity. Greetje’s polished bob, red lipstick, and dressy navy satchel finish off the look.

Greetje likes to use statement necklaces to add visual interest to her outfits:

“That is my thing. I am far more into statement necklaces than fine jewellery. It is a matter of being focussed on it. Because I love necklaces so much, they will be the first thing I spot when I am in a shop, at a fair, in another country. Jewellery fairs are usually a good place to look. Etsy.com is great as well. Do I have a favourite? No, not really, as it is the combination of the necklace with the clothes that make or break the look. Different outfits need different jewellery. Usually my latest find gets my temporary love.”

Greetje - 3

Now this is a dress with a sky-high WOW factor! The elegant frock combines two floral patterns and two animal prints with four colourways. Very much Greetje’s cup of tea, who loves colour and pattern. The midi length, flowy sleeves, and handkerchief hem that drapes beautifully make for a romantic and elegant look. Pairing it with punchy, open-toed red pumps further amps up the ladylike vibe. Our blogger completes the outfit with a bright red saddle bag that matches the neckline of the dress splendidly.

Greetje - 4

Another fab Casual Chic look with a touch of Sporty Luxe. The geometric print top is the star of the show here, made extra crisp by pairing it with white trousers. The boat neckline is very flattering on our blogger, while the graphic black, red, and white pattern feels happy for Summer. Semi-tucking the top showcases a skinny black belt, and lengthens the leg line. Turning up the trousers draws attention to Greetje’s sequined slip-on sneakers that hold a little secret: You can actually wear them two ways. If you brush the nap the other way, the sequins create golden bling. How fun is that! Dangly gold earrings and a large, bright red satchel are the accessories of choice.

Greetje - 5

This is a great example of Angie’s Easy Poncho Ensemble. Greetje has layered her eye-catching hot pink poncho over a simple black top and skinny jeans. The light wash denim pairs well with the punchy pink. Choosing jeans that are fitted on the thighs offsets the volume of the poncho. The second statement piece in this outfit are the on-trend black suede over-the-knee boots. Wearing them over skinny jeans creates a streamlined effect, while the colour echoes the black top peeking out from under the poncho. Greetje’s beautiful navy satchel makes a second appearance, and adds dressy polish. A large vintage floral brooch in white, red, and blue is the arty finishing touch.

Greetje - 6

Greetje has an amazing knack for finding stunning dresses. Here she’s wearing a gorgeous moss green, elbow-length shift dress in a sueded fabric that drapes wonderfully. For warmth and crisp contrast she has layered it over a white top that peeks out from under the sleeves and flattering V-neckline. The just-above-the-knee length is perfect for showcasing tall boots in a rich brown that, together with the dress, creates a fab earth tone palette. Greetje’s bag with thick chain-strap handle matches the colour of the boots. A vintage ’60’s vibe statement necklace in white and light blue pops against the green frock. Red lipstick, simple stud earrings, and a classic watch finish off the look.

I can’t wait to hear what you think of Greetje’s amazing style. Let us know in the comments, and be sure to browse the rest of her outfits on her blog.

How to Wear Statement Socks

Showcasing socks by making them an integral component of the look is an example of Maximalism. Statement socks have become increasingly popular with my clients who want to add warmth and texture, add avant-garde interest, or simply change things up. There are many ways to showcase socks in an outfit, and the visual effect will vary. You have to think about how the socks will complement the shoes, and the outfit overall.

First, the socks themselves. Here are some great pairs that will make a statement. The thick ankle socks in fun patterns work well with booties and sneakers, and create a casual vibe. The refined nylon, crushed velvet, or fishnet versions work for dressier looks. The knee-high socks make a lower leg statement.

Complementing Footwear

Statement socks can be worn with loafers, oxfords, heeled and flat booties, sneakers, high-tops, classic pumps and platform sandals. Keeping the footwear quiet while the socks do the talking is a good strategy.

Incorporating short black fishnet or sheer patterned nylon socks with black footwear into a style that is heavy in black, ink blue and grey is the easiest way to wear statement socks. That’s because the contrast between the outfit components is very low allowing the socks to blend in and read as textural interest as opposed to being a bold, eye-catching statement.

Therein lies the first tip. Create a LOW contrast between the sock, shoe and outfit if you want to ease your way into wearing statement socks, or want to create a more subtle statement. Socks make more of a statement when they’re high contrast to the footwear, or/and the pattern of the socks is bold. For example, wearing blush socks with blush sandals is easier on the eyes than wearing striped yellow and red socks with cobalt sandals.

Wearing socks that are the same or almost the same colour as your shoes creates the visual effect of wearing boots. The socks can be ankle, calf or knee-lengths. Scrunching knee-high socks over footwear creates a retro, leg warmer look.

Complementing the Outfit

The socks need to be visible, which means wearing jeans, pants, skirts and dresses that are short enough to do just that. You’re looking at cropped lengths on pants and jeans — which can also be achieved by rolling and cuffing hems — and just about any length on a dress or skirt that isn’t maxi.

Adding visible socks to outfits is easiest when the socks, shoes and clothing are black and charcoal grey. Or when all three components are dark and tonal. Keeping the palette and the integrity of the socks fairly dressy, adds a sophisticated edge to your look.

You can absolutely combine bold, high-contrast patterned socks into outfits. It can get tricky though, and my clients often feel overly casual, less than chic, and quite juvenile in this sort of combination. It is most successful when…

  • You have a high affinity for colour and pattern mixing
  • The colours of the socks match the colours of the outfit
  • The setting is very casual

Choose bold patterned socks very carefully when making a bold visual statement. If you have the matchy-matchy gene, so much the better. Here’s an example of a casual statement sock outfit with the exact pieces from my wardrobe. The colour palette of the socks, scarf, turtleneck and jacket are the same, which helps me feel pulled together.

Comfy Tall Boots for Narrow Calves

I am delighted that tall boots have made a trendy comeback. I’ve been wearing both of my newer pairs of tall boots a lot, and I’m loving it. My tall black casual riding boots with pointy toes are worn over jeans, although I can also wear them under a dress with socks or pantyhose. The dressier tall ink blue boots that I bought in London last year are to wear with skirts and dresses. I do not wear those over jeans.

It’s extremely hard to find tall tailored boots to fit narrow calves with a calf circumference of between 12 and 13.5 inches. Calf circumferences of 14 to 15 inches are the easiest to fit because they’re the industry’s sweet spot.  Calf circumference of 15.5 to 16 inches are a little trickier to fit, but wider than 16 inches, and you’re back in easy terrain because tall boots are offered with extended calf measurements.

If fitting the calf area wasn’t hard enough, the length of the boots (shaft height) can also be tricky to fit. The industry’s sweet spot is for regular height and tall gals. As a shorter person — unless you’re barely petite, or have relatively long legs — tall tailored boots are generally too tall.

Sites like Poppy Barley, Ariat and DuoBoots, will custom make tall boots to fit, which is one way to go. The success rate however, is mixed. If things work out, then you’re lucky. Over the years, I’ve seen clients order custom-made boots that fit well in the calf, but they’re still too high or short in the shaft, and comfort in the toe box is not guaranteed.

At 5ft 6”, I don’t battle with shaft heights. But with a calf circumference of 13 inches, most tall boots are too wide at the calf. I am pedantic about fit, and intolerant with boots that gape at the calves (and ankles, for that matter.)  That said, I have go-to brands that generally do a better job of fitting a narrow calf.

  • Aquatalia
  • Stuart Weitzman
  • Cole Haan
  • Blondo
  • La Canadienne
  • Chanel
  • Prada
  • Donald Pliner
  • Peter Kaiser
  • Dr. Martens
  • Robert Clergerie

Unfortunately, tall boots by these brands are pricey.

You simply have to keep on trying tall boots until you find a pair that fits. Here’s a head start for those with narrow calves that are comfortable, look sharp, and fit well.
