Team Athleisure or Team Jeans

Athleisure bottoms are leggings, workout pants and shorts, joggers, skorts, and any type of sporty or travel bottom made of technical and performance fabric. You are on Team Athleisure if you prefer them to jeans, and vice versa. You typically find these types of pants in athletic brands like Athleta, Lululemon, Zella, REI, Patagonia and the like. By jeans I mean any pants made of denim, including denim shorts.

Take into account what you wear in cold weather. You might be exclusively in athleisure bottoms now because of Summer heat, but back in jeans as temperatures cool.

I have four pairs of performance leggings from Zella and wear them for yoga and physical therapy. I don’t wear them as regular casual wear or as loungewear. I don’t have any other sort of athleisure bottom. I have several pairs of blue, red, patterned and white jeans and enjoy them enormously. I can wear them year round here in the Pacific North West because our Summers aren’t very hot. Jeans work well for my style and lifestyle, and I bat for Team Jeans.

Over to you. Do you bat for Team Athleisure or Team Jeans? Tell us why and no batting for both teams. My guess is that the results of this poll will be very close given the swing to Athleisure as a preferable way to dress through the global novel Coronavirus pandemic.

SIMPAT Style

Living with and through the novel Corona virus pandemic, and the stress that goes along with it, has made many of us reflect about our lives, our loved ones, and what’s most important. For me, these reflections have meant figuring out and focussing on the priorities of my little family, adapting and evolving how I operate as a fashion professional, simplifying the parts of life that are too complex, and adding enriching dimensions to the parts that are bland.

I’ve reflected a lot about the fashion and style platform because it’s both my hobby and livelihood. It’s awfully uncertain how manufacturing, retail, and the way we shop for future wardrobe items will shape up, but one thing is for sure: Our relationship with fashion and style has changed forever.

New normals have accelerated changes that have been brewing in the rag trade for a while. They have also solidified my own thoughts on what the future pillars of great style, fabulous dress sense, and effective wardrobe management will be. I think these six pillars will capture the most important elements of an effective and enjoyable personal style.

1. Sustainable

It is important to make sustainable and ethical decisions about the way we live. This includes how we add and subtract from our wardrobes. As far as possible we should also consider where and how wardrobe items are made, who makes them, what they are made out of, and how their laundering needs and longevity factor affects the environment.

It’s tough to make extremely sustainable and ethical wardrobe choices. There are no slam-dunk solutions, and many compromises. The socio-economic implications are huge, and reliable information is lacking. But we all have to start somewhere or things will never change. Try to make the most sustainable and ethical choices that you can manage. The good news is that more and more brands have strategies to become more transparent and sustainable over time. And if you purchase thoughtfully, you are also doing your bit to wear what you have for years instead of regularly adding to the landfill.

2. Individual

Sartorial preferences differ greatly between people, and these should be celebrated. Make sure YOU like what you wear, and don’t worry too much about what others think. Select a few people from your life whose opinions matter and seek their advice when you’re unsure. For the rest, wear what you want.

I get that this is harder to do within the confines of restrictive dress codes, mandatory uniforms, and even the expectations of your audience. But it helps that fashion trends and dress codes are becoming less important. There is zero need to chase a fashion trend unless it tickles your fancy. The concept of dated wardrobe items is in itself dated, and so-called fashion rules were made to be broken. Doing your own fashion and style thing with ease and confidence is where it’s at. Be individualistic.

3. Manageable

There is no point in having a fabulous style that you cannot manage in terms of time, resources, laundry, and fuss factor. Figure out how much time and money you’re prepared to put into the fashion and style space of life and stick to it. This includes your hair, nails and beauty regimens. You also have to figure out what is the correct size of wardrobe for your needs and wants. A wardrobe has to be large enough to service all your dressing needs, but small enough that it’s easy to manage.

4. Practical

Your wardrobe and grooming routine should support your needs and not an imaginary life. That means it has to align with the internal factors that impact your style like your aesthetic preferences and body type (although body type guidelines have greatly relaxed over time), as well as the external factors like your lifestyle, climate, and budget. Choose affordable-to-you clothing, footwear and accessories that are flattering and comfortable to wear in your climate, and a hairstyle and grooming regimen to match.

5. Authentic

Soul search a little, or a lot, and sport a style that feels genuine and true to who you are as a person. The way you pull yourself together each day should be in line with your beliefs, values, and personality. Strive to be a fabulous version of and honest representation of yourself, and not a fake imitation of someone else or someone else’s style.

6. Therapeutic

Have fun with fashion and style, relax into your style journey, laugh a lot, and don’t take it too seriously. Allow your style to boost your confidence, and be the non-stressful part of your life. Allow what you wear to create calm, be soothing, and make you feel good about how you visually present yourself to the world. Your interest in fashion and style can also be a creative outlet, a social adventure, and an effective distraction from the challenges of life. Take from it what is empowering and therapeutic, and reap the rewards.

I’m starting to refer to these six pillars with the acronym SIMPAT.

Remember that style is beyond age and size. It’s an energy, attitude and confidence that is expressed through clothing, footwear and accessories. For some style is an innate and intuitive thing, but more importantly, it can be learned.

Weekly Roundup: Assorted Sale Items

Fashion retail is at an unprecedented place. With COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines everywhere, times are extremely tough. Shopping in brick ’n mortar stores is not what it used to be. More and more retailers are filing for bankruptcy. Product assortments have stood still for months as new inputs were held back or cancelled because physical stores were closed. I don’t know what the future holds for fashion retail that’s not online shopping. I guess we will see.

All of that said, there is a lot on sale across the seasons if you’re after a bargain, and some retailers are slowly adding new stock. Here are this week’s top picks. Browse the colour options and read the reviews for a different perspective.

  • JENNY BIRD Imogen Double Hoop Earrings: Jenny Bird makes timeless future classic jewellery pieces, and these earrings are no exception. Versatile, and effective Zoom meeting pick-me-ups.
  • MALI + LILI Melissa Reversible Vegan Leather Tote: An easy to wear and wipe down faux leather tote that is lightweight and practical. The wide guitar strap is comfortable and works crossbody-style.
  • Söfft Bali Sandal: Soft, cushioning, supportive, versatile, and comes in a few more neutrals.
  • MIA Devon Stripe High Waist Crop Wide Leg Jeans: Vertical stripes are unique, especially on a pair of wide crops. These have some stretch, and glide over straighter curves and straight hips and thighs.
  • DEAN DAVIDSON Lagos Pendant Necklace: An easy statement necklace to wear over a crew neckline if you're after some vertical integrity.
  • DAYDREAMER Elton John Graphic Tee: For those who like a bit or a lot of Elton John music. The Daydreamer brand has tees with other artists too.
  • KARINE SULTAN Bee Charm Pearl Bracelet: A pearl bracelet with a bee charm is unique and quite enchanting. The size is unfortunately not adjustable. A timeless conversation piece.
  • DEAN DAVIDSON Lagos Huggie Hoop Earrings: Interesting hoop earrings that are as chunky as they are dainty. Versatile.
  • Free People Marni Asymmetrical Ruffle Tunic: Casually bohemian, great over slim bottoms or long shorts. Wear it as a beach and pool cover-up. It runs big and is very roomy. It's long and much like a short tunic.
  • Boden Viola Multiway Bag: This is one of my favourite styles of bag because of its versatility. It can be a dressy satchel and a more casual crossbody. Beautifully made and comes in emerald green. Both are on their way to me so that I can effectively pick the right colour.
  • BUENO Turner Slide Sandal: A soft and buttery slide that comes in five colours and works on a NARROWER and more low-volume foot. Could be fab for at home Summer days since we're staying at home a lot more these days. I ordered the white, but they were still too wide for me.
  • Gap Brooklyn Wide Leg Crop Pant: Wide crops that come in five neutrals, and work on an assortment of body types, both straighter and curvier. All the pros of technical fabric.
  • Gap Flow With It Pant: An avant-garde and edgier silhouette in modal spandex that does not crease is a rare find. Works on most body types because the style moulds to the body. The waist can be pushed down to create a better fit if you are short in the waist or rise. Comes in grey.
  • Nic + Zoe 'Summer Fling' Flirt Skirt: Flippy Denim Skirt Fabness. Runs a little big and comes in petites.
  • Ron White Astra Sandal: These hard-edged sandal booties are great with a black top and cropped pants, or cropped black pants. Comfy, soft, and best on regular volume feet and for Team Silver.

You can see the items alongside my descriptions on the collection page.

Spotlight: EcoVibe by Leonard and Andrea Allen

Leonard and Andrea AllenEcoVibe is an apparel, homeware, and gift set lifestyle brand based in Portland, Oregon. It’s the combined vision of soulmates and co-owners, Leonard and Andrea Allen. Len is a Portland native who brings 30 years of rag trade experience to the mix, ranging from buyer, runway model, and personal stylist. Andrea has a background in health, wellness, sales and marketing. Together they are committed to the idea that a sustainable lifestyle is best, and should be accessible to all.

Len and Andrea are focussed on ethical production, sustainability, and the impact that the things they sell have on the environment. They take the time and care to consider where and how things are made, who makes them, and what they are made out of. That’s why the brand’s urban mix of clothing, footwear, accessories, plants, homeware, and gifts supports local designers, women, and minority and family-owned businesses. Production runs are small, unique, and lots of the goods are made of recycled and natural materials.

Ecovibe Zena Striped V-Neck Blouse in Rust

Ecovibe Astoria Stiff Brim Panama Hat

As I browse the apparel section of the site, I see simplicity, comfort, relaxation, a boho-lite sensibility for ladies wear, and earth tones galore. There are lots of neutrals, and in some cases an extended size curve. There is an emphasis on soft and cosy fabrics, solids, nature, practical dressing, and fluid silhouettes. Their homeware is understated, serene, natural, and as rustic as it is modern. Their gift sets are unique, timeless, gender-neutral, and won’t break the bank.

EcoVibe has two beautiful brick and mortar stores in Portland, OR, or you can purchase most items online if you live in the US or Canada. EcoVibe donates facial masks to our healthcare heros, and donates 1% of all online sales to environmental causes. And last, I’m particularly fond of EcoVibe’s Instagram page because dogs are welcome in their stores, and there are some fun photos of them. What a great company, and not far from Seattle.

Outfit Formula: Cropped Pants as Shorts

Some of my clients do not wear shorts because of their lack of coverage. I suggest casual skirts and dresses as a breezy alternative, but it’s not a slam dunk because they simply want to wear some type of trouser. That makes the Summery cropped pant awfully appealing because it’s casual, covered, relatively cool, and much like a pair of VERY long shorts.

Granted, cropped pants are not as ventilating as a pair of shorts, but they are more ventilating than a full-length pair of pants and jeans. Here are some examples of the types of outfits these clients would wear when they substitute cropped pants for shorts.

1. Columned and Gauzy

This type of column of colour is popular because of its vertical integrity. The cardigan, top and cropped pants are low contrast or the same colour, thereby creating the columned effect. The sleeveless tank works well under the gauzy cardigan, and especially in air conditioning. Make sure you like the way the top looks without the cardigan too. Casual slides, sandals, espadrilles, and mules finish off the look.

M&S Button Detailed Midi Cardigan

2. Cargo, Tee and Sneakers

Combine a pair of lightweight cotton cargo pants or chinos with a semi-tucked tee or tank. Add a pair of sneakers, and a casual bag. Here the white sneakers work well with the white patterned top. You can sub a casual breezy blouse for the tee if you like, and add a pair of sandals for a utility pretty boho-lite vibe.

M&S Tencel Cargo Tapered Cropped Trousers

3. Tie-Front Top or Blouse with Cropped Pants

This version is dressier because of the shirt style and more formal fabric of the pants. The strappy sandals add a bit of glam. The shirt is something you can tie with a regular button-through shirt or blouse, if it’s not already tied. Tie the tie a little LOWER on the waist than you expect for a flattering and practical effect. I’d like to see this combination with white sandals, slides, mules or sneakers.

LOFT Plus Pull On Wide Leg Pants

4. Wide Patterned Bottom and Solid Top

This is a much liked combination with clients because the bottoms make a statement, and the roomy fit is almost as breezy as shorts. This type of bottom is lovely and elegant when it’s soft and flowing. Match up the bottoms with a top that picks up a colour in the pattern. Wear the top tucked or untucked. Finish things off with Summer shoes of your choosing, and a cropped denim jacket for the chill of the air conditioning. Add jewellery, headgear, watch and eyewear as desired.
