No-Chafe Slip Shorts for Skirts and Dresses

Breezy dress and skirt season is fast approaching in the Northern hemisphere. Here’s a recap on the types of knickers you can wear underneath those lovely Summery frocks and skirts when your regular undies aren’t quite right.

To prevent the discomfort of thighs rubbing together, try a slip short or pair of skimmies. Underwear brand Jockey does a great, size-inclusive collection. The lengths of the slip shorts vary depending on your preference. Note that most of these are different to shapewear because they don’t compress and control. They simply smooth out and create coverage. Some styles are made of fabrics that wick away perspiration and are cooling.

If your thighs don’t rub together, but you feel exposed in regular knickers, try a full brief that has ample coverage on the midsection and over the bottom. The extra coverage is very effective for dresses and skirts that aren’t tight and straight, like A-line and flared silhouettes.

My clients run the gamut with what they wear under warm and hot-weather skirts and dresses. Some wear shapewear, and some stick to their everyday undies. Some wear slip shorts, and some wear full briefs. Some wear their regular knickers with half slips. Some wear bike shorts under flared skirts and dresses.

My Spring and Summer dresses and skirts are midi, midaxi, fluid and flow, which means that they move as I move. The A-line and flared silhouettes are very breezy, and I do feel exposed wearing them with my everyday knickers and bare legs. So I wear slip shorts or full briefs for coverage and insulation. Neither have compression, so I’m comfortable and secure. In colder weather, I wear hosiery over regular knickers with skirts and dresses, which provides ample coverage.

Over to you. Do you wear slip shorts, skimmies, or full briefs under your warm and hot-weather dresses and skirts?

Outfit Formula: Neutral Spring Utility

Casual utility jackets in shades of olive are popular with my clients. They are usually worn on mild Spring days, and chillier Summer days, and with just about anything. Most enjoy wearing them with neutrals like black, grey, white, navy blue, denim, and earth tones. Some remix them with pastels and brights. The jackets come in a variety of silhouettes across a range of fits and lengths. Some retailers call them field jackets or anoraks. The collection below shows a good assortment.

Here are some very easy ways to create a casual neutral utility jacket look for Spring. Feel free to add Spring scarves, jewellery and a handbag of your choice to punch things up.

1. Column of Black

Create a column of black with black separates like jeans and a tee, blouse, shirt or pullover. Or take the Athleisure route with joggers and sweatshirt. Choose navy or grey if black is not your neutral. Top the look off with an olive utility jacket. Here the olive espadrilles that match the topper are a nice nod to Spring. They also break up the expanse of black when the topper comes off, which you can also do with a scarf, statement necklace and earrings, and eyewear.

2. Column of White

Create a column of colour with a casual top and bottom in shades of white. Choose light grey or tan as your white if that’s more to your taste. Top the look off with an olive utility jacket. White sneakers are an easy addition, but casual metallic footwear will work too. Or footwear in shades of brown. Add a scarf, statement necklace, statement earrings or eyewear to create some visual interest for when the topper comes off.

3. Remix Earth Tones

I like the twinset effect of the olive top and topper here. It’s effective and chic in a subtle way. The earthy chinos and white sneakers are a nice nod to spring, and break up the olive. The caramel chinos work beautifully with the auburn hair of the model. Casual cognac footwear that bookends the model’s hair would look splendid too. And if you dare, throw in a pair of olive chinos for a full column of olive.

4. Patterned Tees and Dresses

Combine a neutral patterned top with solid bottoms to match. The pattern needn’t have olive in it, but it can help pull the look together when it does. Top the look off with an olive utility jacket. Here the light cognac footwear bookends the strawberry blonde hair of the model extremely well, and picks up the same colour in the tee. Feel free to sub the tee and skirt with a patterned dress in a similar palette. Make sure you like the outfit without the jacket if you need to remove it.

Team Bookend or Team Don’t Bookend

This poll is about whether or not you like to closely or exactly match your footwear with your hair colour in outfits. This style strategy frames your look. Repeating colours on the top and bottom parts of the outfit is an easy way to pull it together. Visually, our eyes are drawn to the harmony of the repetition.

For example, light blondes wear shades of white footwear well. Redheads rock orange, classic animal print, and cognac footwear. Black and brown footwear looks great with black and brown hair. Burgundy footwear is punchy with burgundy highlighted hair. Same goes for rainbow-coloured green, pink, purple and blue hair. Silver shoes are magical with shades of grey hair. Taupe and tan shoes are fab on dark blondes, and bronze shoes are lovely on an auburn brunette.

Of course, you don’t need to bookend your hair and footwear to create a fabulous outfit. Blondes can wear black shoes with panache. Dark brunettes can wear white shoes with the best of them. Inge is a dark brunette, and wears white shoes extremely well because she wears a lot of cool-toned solid pastels, mid-tones and striped patterns that have white in them. So it depends a lot on your sartorial preferences, the colour palettes of your wardrobe, and whether you like that crisp effect.

I bat for Team Bookend. I have light blonde hair and a footwear capsule full of white and cream shoes, which I wear most of the time. White and light footwear bookends my hair, matches my white pearl necklaces I wear daily, and works well with the warm and bright Spring colour palette I sport throughout the year. Furthermore, I enjoy wearing crisp outfits, and white footwear adds an effective crisp and fresh touch. That said, I also wear blush, red, orange, gold, and citron footwear. I have one pair of tall and tailored navy boots, and no black or grey footwear.

Over to you. Do you bat for Team Bookend or Team Don’t Bookend? Tell us why, and no batting for both teams. If you can’t pick a side, I’m serving leak cakes and sautéed Brussels sprouts on the bench. Gluten-free sugar cookies for dessert.

Self-Care Saturday

I have morning and evening grooming routines that are fast and efficient, and don’t change much over time. But I also carve out extra time on Saturday morning to indulge in some self-care. I find it therapeutic and like the results. I do little extras like groom my brows, and give my hands and feet a basic manicure and pedicure, sans nail polish. Sometimes I use a facial scrub and apply a facial mask. None of these self-care routines take very long because I’m doing them myself at home, but it does feel more “spa-like” than the norm.

I also sleep in a little longer, and make a point to slow down, take my time, and not to rush around to get things done. We have breakfast a little later than normal. And unless something unexpected happens, everyone at the Cox Castle has a more relaxing start to the weekend. It makes a difference to our state of mind, especially when life is stressful.

If I have commitments on Saturday morning, I try to indulge in a little self-care on Sunday morning. Failing that, I wait till the next week. Over to you. Do you carve out a little time for self-care?
