Link Love: The Hunt for Vintage

Designer Nanette Lepore talks about her love for hunting down vintage pieces in Fashionista’s column How I Shop.

The New York Times goes in search of the best stores to buy higher-end vintage menswear.

The Fashion Spot uses the Tu at Sainsbury’s collection to illustrate how to do vintage with a modern twist.

Recently they also shared a roundup of ten of their favourite vintage shops on Instagram because “a growing number of vintage dealers are using the app to show off their fabulous collections of story-telling 50s party dresses, Edwardian wedding gowns and 70s fringed jackets”.

L’Abeille is enjoying the series about Color and Proportion over at The Vivienne Files.

“Only a select few of us have the drive, ambition, and talent PLUS the thick skin necessary to deal with the deluge of comparison and judgment that comes part and parcel with positions of power and prominence.” Angie directs us to Sally’s post about how we need to break body image barriers in order to live a confident and unselfconscious life.

Imogen’s post about what your skirt length says about you caught Joy’s attention because she is sensitive to this because of age, but at the same time doesn’t want to look frumpy.

Laurinda thought Inside a Burberry Trench Part 2 — The Removable Liner provided a fascinating peek at a well-made coat lining. Here is Part 1.

Many forum members have been talking about or following Marie Kondo’s decluttering advice. Marlene and Suz came across an article about how she shops for clothes. Suz adds that “at least two of her recommendations are exactly the same as Angie’s: ‘Cherish the size you are now,’ and ‘If an item sparks joy, do not wait for it to go on sale’. (Because selection is best at the start of a season.)”

Annagybe found this post about What Plus-Size Clothes Look Like on Plus-Size Women pretty hilarious and telling at the same time.

Ariadne is loving the “Women Who Work” series at Out of the Bag because “it’s fascinating to see how they’ve thought through what ‘anything goes’ actually means, and the choices they’ve made as a result of how they want to be perceived.”

Ensemble: Rust, Light Blue & Gold

Zara LookbookThis ensemble was inspired by an outfit in Zara’s Summer lookbook that combines a pair of rust culottes with a light blue cropped pullover and gold sandals. The outfit itself is trendy, comfy and fab, AND the colour combination opens up a myriad of outfit possibilities.

Shades of orange combined with shades of blue are very complementary. Feel free to tweak the shades of blue and rust to suit your tastes. Think orange, peach and coral for the rust component; and sky blue, mid-tone blue or faded denim for the light blue component.

I’ve started the ball rolling with four renditions that range from dressy to casual. I’ve used solids, but by all means use a patterned piece that works with the colour palette.

1. Rust Culottes & Blue Pullover

Here are the exact pieces that the Zara model is wearing. An untucked top worn with culottes needs to be quite short to create structure. Or partially tucking the front would work if a full tuck is not your thing. As an alternative, wear the rust culottes with a white top and faded denim jacket.

2. Orange Skirt & Denim Shirt

Create a modern juxtaposition by combining an orange lace skirt with a light blue denim or chambray shirt. A solid orange skirt will do just fine if lace is not for you. Tuck in the top to showcase the waist and add heeled footwear or dressy pointy toe flats. A white bag is a great finishing touch.

3. Rust Ankle Pants & Drapey Top

Combine rust or orange ankle pants with a soft light blue drapey top. A pair of orange or rust jeans works well too. A denim shirt, light blue silk blouse or tee can substitute the top if arty-farty drape is not your thing. Complete the outfit with heels or flats. Remember that ankle strap footwear is a natural pairing with ankle pants.

4. Faded Denim Flares & Coral Top

This version turns the formula on its head. Combine faded blue jeans with a top in a shade of orange and add gold shoes. Complete the look with a white, gold, tan or cognac bag. I’ve chosen a ‘70s cowgirl look here, just for fun. Flares, a drapey top or ‘70s inspired blouse, platform sandals and a Stetson.

A tan or off-white topper works well if you need an extra layer. I’ve kept the footwear gold because a warm metal works particularly well with an earthy rust. But don’t let that stop you from choosing silver, taupe, cognac, white or nude-for-you footwear instead. Add jewellery, headgear, watch and eyewear as desired.

Nordstrom Roundup: Swimsuits & Accessories

Here’s a selection of one and two-piece swimsuits, and swimwear accessories. Many of the styles have been great for my clients. Nordstrom repeats these styles season after season because they have a winning fit and this is confirmed in the rave reviews. Be sure to browse all the colour options.

Remember that swimwear is sized differently to clothing and that you will often need to size up two sizes. For example, if you generally wear a size US8 in clothing, you will probably need a size US12 in swimwear. Occasionally a size up will do the trick if the cut is roomy. Swimwear can also be altered if a small nip or tuck is necessary to achieve perfect fit.

I bought the Seafolly ‘Boyleg’ One-Piece Swimsuit in shocking pink and am very happy with it. I adore a retro bathing costume, and boyshorts are my choice of panty silhouette so it’s no wonder that I fell in love with this style.

Outstanding Outfit Bloggers

Urban Casual with a Touch of Hard Edge

Joanna Pritchard (43) lives in Atlanta and works in marketing. When browsing her blog, Poppy’s Style, you’ll notice that she is an adventurous dresser who has tons of fun with fashion. Her style is urban casual with a good dose of hard edge. The Sporty Luxe trend seems to have been invented especially for our neutrals loving blogger whose sassy short ‘do elevates her style quotient even further.

“Before I had my children I loved clothes but hated shopping for them — I really didn’t know what to wear and tended to buy lots of cheaper items, so I ended up lost in piles of clothes with no idea how to wear them. After my second child I lost a lot of weight and started to be intrigued by clothes once again — but I was working in the corporate world so mainly shopped for skirt suits and pants from places like Loft and Ann Taylor. As I started blogging it became easier to be more experimental with clothes. I gained confidence with the support of my blogging peers and discovered brands like AllSaints that were a little more urban and edgier. This is where I really feel comfortable these days. I wear a much more neutral color palette and stay away from patterns. I also try to consider my body shape more as it continues to change. I have boobs, no hips and slim legs so try to draw attention to my lower half. I love shoes and my investment pieces are boots, sneakers and sandals — they always fit regardless of my weight!”

Joanna - 1

Joanna is all about Sporty Luxe and loves to incorporate athleisure pieces into her outfits. Here she’s paired drapey wool sweatpants with a cropped floral print top and fitted leather jacket. The monochrome palette and longer length cami layered under the cropped top create a long, lean line. The large-scale graphic floral shows that a neutral print can be as bold as a bright floral. Joanna’s suede ankle boots and black leather jacket add textural interest and a Hard-Edge touch. Her polished short ‘do, impeccable makeup, and the floral pattern soften the look.

A military jacket has a high longevity factor. Joanna is sporting a dressy version, and casualizes the look by pairing the jacket with jeans. Opting for flares and a soft gathered blouse gives the outfit a Boho Chic vibe, which is further emphasized by the fringed handbag. I love how the feminine layering top contrasts with the strict integrity of the topper. Clever outfit juxtaposition. Matching the jeans with pointy-toe pumps provides a sleek and dressy finish. Also note how well the earthy brown accessories work with the crisp white and khaki topper.

On-trend culottes meet ‘70s Glam. Joanna got the proportions exactly right. Wearing the voluminous bottoms with heels is an effective way to lengthen the leg line. Our blogger also created a column of colour by pairing them with a slouchy cashmere V-neck sweater in the same shade of grey. The roomy drape of the pullover echoes the drape of the midi-length culottes, making for a visually cohesive whole. The tall suede boots with stacked heel — the cognac colour looks especially rich with the cool greys– and faux fur vest are fun retro glam elements. A bold statement necklace is the modern finishing touch.

Crisp white with light grey is a slam dunk colour combo for Spring and Summer. Ripped-at-the-knee jeans create a RATE (rough around the edges) feel that works well for Joanna’s urban casual Mum-on-the-Go style. Semi-tucking a fluid tee into belted boyfriend jeans adds a little structure to a casual outfit and is forgiving on the midriff. Self-colour ankle boots that meet the edges of the rolled jeans lengthen the leg line. Dainty silver bracelets and a silver watch complement the neutral colour palette.

Joanna is rocking another military-inspired jacket, this time with khaki pants that are a mix of utility cargo pants and harem trousers. Avant-garde tomboy toughness. The cropped jacket works great with the dropped crotch silhouette, while the peplum detail in the back adds playful structure. Semi-tucking a fluid tee creates flattering proportions by lengthening the leg line. Adding sockless big white sneakers amps up the Sporty Luxe factor, and feels fresh with the khaki and black. The stripes on the sneaks echo the dark colours up top and bookend Joanna’s dark brown hair.

Here are Joanna’s tips for dipping your toes into new style territories:

“I have a daily fashion mantra — ignore age, avoid patterns and take a risk. Of course don’t follow all the rules, I regularly break my mantra with leopard print but generally it serves me well. I think it helps to be aware of your body shape but there are some items I am not supposed to wear but still do just because I love them! I get a lot of my inspiration from other bloggers — over 35 bloggers, younger bloggers and street style images on Pinterest. Ideas are everywhere and there is normally a way of tailoring a look to your circumstances to make it more wearable. I like to shop on my own and order online so I can really relax and try something on without being influenced by changing room lights and mirrors which can distort reality! Don’t worry about ‘age appropriateness’ — many brands like Mango, Zara, Topshop and AllSaints have fabulous pieces that can be worn by everyone. Invest in classic items and then add cheaper on trend items from these brands to keep your style evolving.”

Putting together visually interesting looks with two items of clothing is challenging. Well, Joanna shows us how it’s done! She is wearing cropped jeans that are fashionably intentional at this shorter length. The greyish-blue wash ties in perfectly with the rest of the neutral colour palette, and the slim-fit skinnies add structure to the oversized boxy tee. The elbow-length sleeves of the T-shirt are fitted, which further streamlines the look. Elegant grey d’Orsay pumps add ladylike polish. The low colour contrast between jeans and footwear elongates the leg line. Teardrop hook earrings draw attention to Joanna’s shiny short hair.

Fab Finds: Denim Culottes

I haven’t seen these styles in person, but they look fun if you’re after a pair of interesting denim bottoms. Shorter than regular jeans and longer than denim shorts. The tailored waist provides ample structure. Fab combined with a boxy cropped top, soft tucked top, welted sweater or untucked fitted knit top.

Remember that denim is stiff, which means that the silhouette will create a voluminous effect on the body. The wide styles in particular will feel like “a lot of culotte”. Styles with narrower side seams are less dramatic, but will create a more streamlined effect despite the rigidity of the denim. And yes, you can wear culottes with flats

Petites can absolutely wear denim culottes, or any style of culotte for that matter, as long as the length is adjusted to create the right proportions for your height. Unless the styles come in a petite length, they will probably require shortening.
