Weekly Roundup: Quiet Neutrals

This week’s roundup is for neutral lovers with trendy touches of ‘90s tan and stone. There’s a lot of blue in stores and not nearly as much grey, which is spot on for Spring and Summer trends. I also see cobalt coming through, which is a less neutral blue and not as quiet, but gorgeous with black and white.

The brand Tommy Hilfiger is making a comeback as I see it appear in retailers who haven’t stocked it for years. Banana Republic is looking better than ever thanks to a new design director and merchandising management. I’m impressed with their commitment to sustainability, wearable design, fit, a more diverse size assortment, and all round better quality and service. They’re getting a larger chunk of my fashion budget because the quality, fit, silhouettes and colours are working well for this leg of my style journey.

On to the items.

  • Tommy Hilfiger Stripe Long Sleeve Tie Front Top: If you like tailored tees with pizzazz, try this. The front tie detail is unique, not bulky, and you don't need to tuck the top for structure. The clever placement of the directions of the stripes is flattering on most body types.
  • Tommy Hilfiger Slim Fit Plaid Cotton Double Breasted Blazer: Tommy Hilfiger blazers are beautifully made, look a lot like a Veronica Beard but cost a fraction of the price. Here's a Spring and Summer check that is gorgeous with white, olive and blue. Nice over dresses too. Best on a small or regular size bust.
  • Tommy Hilfiger Lawn Stripe Button-Up Shirt: An interesting vertically striped shirt in nice fabric. Fluid and fab drape. Works well semi-tucked. Lovely turn-back detailing on the sleeves, and I think nicest in the light neutrals.
  • Tommy Hilfiger Polka Dot Long Sleeve Peplum Top: A romantic blouse that works best on those who can fill it out. The blouson waist is more flattering that you expect. Comes in light neutrals.
  • Reiss Pixie Pleat Back Trench Coat: Check out the back of this trench coat. Unique, beltless, excellent versatile length, and almost sold out. Beautifully made. The fluid fit works on a range of body types.
  • Reiss Jean Pleated Floral Long Sleeve Blouse: I can't believe they styled this gorgeous blouse tucked because it's trapeze in silhouette with beautiful back knife pleats. It's supposed to be worn UNTUCKED and drapes like a dream. Beautifully made and gorgeous fabric. Sensually modest.
  • Reiss Archie Leather Crossbody Bag: A crossbody with a handy front pocket for your phone. Lovely quality.
  • Club Monaco Jessyn Pleated Chiffon Pants: Hello '90s palazzos! Fun swoosh factor. These look great with a short or long welted pullover or knit top. Or a short boxy top. I prefer them with dressy flats or sneakers.
  • Banana Republic JAPAN EXCLUSIVE Poplin Ruffle T-Shirt: A great little avant-garde knit top for Team Earth Tones that works well on a smaller bust. Lovely fabric.
  • Club Monaco Cavalry Twill Cuffed Pants: A nice cuffed nod to the '90s that works well on both a straighter and curvier figure. Lovely thick fabric, beautifully made, and very earthy. The toffee is less orange in person. Length is quite long.
  • Banana Republic Snake Print Lightweight Rectangular Scarf: Safari Scarf Fabness. Very lightweight and works well creased.
  • BAUM UND PFERDGARTEN Jodi Print Turtleneck: If you like to wear mesh tops, try this one - although you'll need to like turtlenecks too. Lovely fit and quality, and not too clingy. Needs a camisole unless the bra is a showpiece.
  • Eileen Fisher Classic Collar Silk Shirtdress: Silk Sack Dress Fabness. It's beyond body type, comes in black, and runs a size big.
  • BAUM UND PFERDGARTEN Brooklynn Crop Cotton & Linen Jacket: This looks best on those who can fill it out with broad shoulders, a larger bust, and long arms. Fashion forward and versatile.
  • AllSaints Polly Denim Midi Dress: A fitted yet not constricting denim dress that looks better without the layering tee and belt. Fits a range of body types. Well made. I've ordered it!
  • Tommy Hilfiger Stanford Stripe Crop Pants: The fabric is soft and drapey, feeling luscious against the skin. The vertical stripes are unique and pretty in the low-contrast stripe. The mid rise is comfortable and the fit works quite well on curvier figure despite the vertical stripe. Good room on the thighs.
  • Club Monaco Matie Gingham Crop Pants: The micro check is for Team Cobalt Blue. The mid rise feels quite low compared to high-rise everything. The fit is very fluid on a straighter body type, and good on a curvier body type. Lovely fabric. Good room on the thighs.
  • Zara Asymmetric Poplin Shirt: The white is more see-through than I'd like. It's NOT a well-made item, but the fabric is quite good and the cut is genius. It will not overwhelm a small frame as you might expect. I have it in a blue stripe. The striped fabric is better than the white, but the white looks great with a white camisole layered underneath it.
  • French Connection Amalie Lace Blouse: This is GORGEOUS. The sleeves are a work of art and the boxy fit is architectural. The lace is off-white and not scratchy (not soft either, so consider yourself warned). It runs a size big. It would have been mine if it didn't run big and I wasn't sized out.
  • Alfani Printed High Low Tunic, Created for Macy's: An interesting stripe in a flowing and drapey tunic that is crease-resistant and machine washable. Runs a size big, and works on an assortment of body types. Comes in other patterns.
  • Banana Republic Linen Raglan Cropped T-Shirt: A simple short tee that is sufficiently opaque and works on a range of body types. Many colours and read the rave reviews.
  • Banana Republic High-Rise Wide-Leg Cropped Jean: These worked on a range of clients as long as the length was right. Two to four inches above the ankle bone is great. Flattering, dramatic, and comes in lengths. You can easily trim the frayed hem if that's not your cuppa.
  • DKNY Faux-Leather Moto Jacket: Good faux leather jacket for Team Broad Shoulders. Runs a size big. Very pretty off-white.
  • INC International Concepts INC Fringe-Hem Button-Front Straight-Leg Jeans, Created for Macy's: Go Team Woodstock. These come in four washes, are super soft, mould to most body types, and are very comfy. The fringe is more dramatic in person.
  • Anne Klein Knit-Trim Tweed Jacket: You have to see this fabulous piece in person to get the right impression. The classic Spring tweed bouclé jacket is trimmed with a sporty striped rib creating fabulous tension. Impeccable quality.
  • INC International Concepts INC Plus Size Tummy Control Zenith Boyfriend Jeans, Created for Macy's: Super cute trendy fluid jeans with rave reviews.
  • Ecco Soft 7 Woven Slip-On Sneaker: Extremely polished, casual and neat on the foot. Comes in other neutrals and can work well with orthotics when you size up. Wear them with just about anything.
  • DKNY Cropped Bomber Jacket: A crinkly bomber jacket that is very lightweight and loud because the fabric makes a noise, but is awfully fun and will not date.
  • Theory Treeca Check Crop Pants: IMPECCABLE light blue micro check pants that are made of extremely gorgeous crisp fabric. Crease-resistant, comfortable, and very polished. Good cigarette silhouette, and not skinny. Fits a range of body types. Runs big unless you want them to fit roomy like the model. I sized down to achieve a more tailored fit. They are mine and are the BEST Theory pants I've ever had.
  • Banana Republic High-Rise Tapered Pant: The best fitting carrot pants of the season. Lovely fabric, sueded, best on a curvier body type with a defined waist, and the waist tie lies VERY flat. The rise is not too high either. It worked on straighter figures with a less defined waist too. Comes in three neutrals. SUPER CUTE.
  • Banana Republic Classic Utility Jacket: Great utility jacket that comes in more than just olive. Good side entry pockets and reasonably structured fit. Read the rave reviews.

Team Chunky or Team Dainty Jewellery

You are on Team Chunky if you prefer wearing jewellery that is big, bold, eye-catching, and makes a statement. You are on Team Dainty if you prefer wearing jewellery that is small, subtle, refined, and not nearly as visible. Any type of jewellery counts, whether it’s costume, real, metallic, colourful, resin, plastic, wooden, glass, vintage or brand new.

I’m Team Dainty Jewellery most of the time, and have been all of my life. Back when I wore earrings they were always some sort of small stud. I wear dainty rings and bracelets exclusively, and recently added a dainty gold monogrammed letter “A” necklace to my very small jewellery capsule. I’m small-boned and dainty in stature, so to my eye dainty jewels create complementary proportions.

Pearl RingI fetched my new wedding ring last month (same husband, new ring) and chose a dainty and refined look when designing it. I’m absolutely thrilled with the result.

I make the chunky jewellery exception when it comes to my pearl necklaces. I wear one or two real pearl necklaces with chunky white pearls daily. They are neither subtle nor small, and make a dressy, glam, and Modern Retro statement. I wear them with everything, and everywhere. A few times a year, I layer piles of white costume pearls around my neck with the real pearls just because I love big white pearls. Here are ten year old photos of me doing just that. I love the look as much today as I did back then.

Over to you. Do you bat for Team Chunky or Team Dainty Jewellery? Tell us why, and no batting for both teams. If you can’t pick a side, feel free to sit this one out on the bench where I’m serving a spicy vegetarian Moroccan rice that’s heavy on the veg, ginger and paneer, with cold and sweet Sumo oranges for dessert.

Classic & Comfy Casual Chic

A new outfit from Veronica Popoiacu of Bittersweet Colours, whom we introduced to YLF in August 2013.

Veronica calls this “casual, classic, and comfortable,” and it’s indeed a brilliant example of a polished casual Modern Classic look. Veronica has paired a roomy camel turtleneck pullover with cropped white skinny jeans. The body-con fit of the skinnies offsets the volume of the top and the topper. As a topper she’s picked a vintage wool coat with a subtle A-line silhouette that matches the camel sweater. The white and camel colour combo is a classic that reads soothing, crisp and chic. Fully turning up the collar on the turtleneck creates visual drama and works well with the upturned collar of her coat. Stan Smith sneakers in white echo the crisp white of the jeans. Our colour-loving blogger adds an unexpected touch with a large structured satchel in sour apple green that brings modern zing to the outfit. She finishes off the look with a dainty pearl ring, subtle lipstick and oversized sunnies.

Easy Outfit : Casual Wide Crop Jeans

Wide cropped jeans with higher rises have gone from fringe to mainstream in six years. They are a trendier choice than skinnies, but defy the trends when they are sailor styles. Very few clients and friends fancied wide crops when they resurfaced. But things changed after they found a pair that fit, and could style them in a way that worked with their sartorial preferences. Now most of my clientele have one or multiple pairs of wide crop jeans. Never say never when it comes to fashion and style.

Once I convinced clients that they could wear wide crop jeans casually with an UNtucked top and sneakers, AND look streamlined, the silhouette had more appeal. No need to tuck or semi-tuck tops, or wear heels.

The outfits here represent an outfit formula that won over many of my clients. It’s a great look for Spring, transitional weather, or a cool Summer:

Denim Wide Crops + Short Fluid Sweater + Sneakers + Optional Topper

  • Wide Crops: Choose a pair in blue, white or black denim.
  • Short Fluid Sweater: You’re after a cotton or linen-rich pullover in a fluid fit and shorter length. A shorter length top gives structure to wide bottoms when you’re leaving it untucked by showcasing the hips and lengthening the leg line from the hips upward. A short fluid pullover with a welt works well because you can scrunch it a little shorter.
  • Sneakers: Add sneakers that work with the outfit. White sneakers are the default trendy classic, but non-white sneakers with white soles, blush, or metallic sneakers work well too. Wearing non-white sneakers in a colour that is repeated in the top or topper helps pull the outfit together.
  • Topper: Choose a short or longer topper for the most flattering proportions. Keeping the topper open creates a line down the front of the outfit that adds effective vertical integrity.

White Stuff Thea Wide-Leg Cropped Trousers

I adore this outfit formula and have been wearing it for a while with the components from my wardrobe in the collection below. The shorter pullovers are left UNtucked and most have a welt. The toppers range in thickness because Spring days can be cold or mild. I almost always add nude-for-you knee-highs for warmth, unless it’s very mild.

Over to you. Does the combination tickle your fancy?

Outfit Formula: Neutral Spring Light Blue

I find light blue extremely versatile, which is why I have a few light blue bags, some tops, light blue denim, and I just committed to a pair of light blue sneakers. Light blue looks fab with neutrals like black, white and grey. It looks great with other shades of blue, earth tones, sour brights, and pastels. It’s extra pretty when you have blue eyes because it makes them sparkle. This is my current collection of light blue wardrobe items, and I’ll happily add more.

Here are some outfits that mix light blue with neutrals for a fresh Spring look. The incorporation of white in the outfits creates an effective crisp touch. I can’t pick a fave, and adore them all.

1. Trendy Tonal Light Blue

Combine a blue and white striped shirt, blouse or top with a pair of light blue jeans, white footwear, and you’re good to go. Here, the flared jeans and big shirt are trendy choices, but by all means choose silhouettes that are classic or more to your taste. The oversized shirt has been semi-tucked for structure, but it could have been left out in an avant-garde way. The low contrast between the three items offsets the horizontal lines that high-contrast items create, which would give them just enough structure sans the hint of waist definition.

2. Spectrum of Blues

Light blue looks great with a range of blues AND white. Here, a dark cobalt top is combined with white bottoms, and a saturated light blue topper. A navy top would work well, or a black top if it’s too much blue. Think jackets if coats aren’t your thing, or too warm for your climate. The black footwear works well with the dark hair of the model. Navy, tan, metallic, light blue or cognac footwear are great substitutes. Summery sandals worn with knitwear and a woolly coat look seasonally confused to my eye, so I vote closed shoes.

Violeta Cashmere Sweater

3. Light Blue and White with Black Accents

This combination is particularly delicious with the complexion of the model. Create a white column of colour with jeans and shirt. Top it with a light blue pullover, sweatshirt or jacket. Add black shoes and belt, and even better if you have black hair to bookend the shoes. You can leave off the white top layer, and simply pair a light blue top with white jeans and add the black accents. If dark shoes aren’t your thing, add cognac, tan, metallic or white.

4. Light Blue, White and Brown

Light blue and brown was a popular combination in the ’90’s and is looking awfully fresh combined with white for 2020. Find a pair of earthy bottoms like brown, cinnamon, olive or tan, and throw on a white top and light blue topper with it. Finish things off with white footwear which pick up the white of the top, and keep the palette fresh. Add jewellery, watch and eyewear as desired.
