Lots of Linen: Yay or Nay

There is an extreme amount of linen in Spring and Summer collections this year. This makes sense because linen was big in the ’90s, and ’90s trends are a big influence on fashion right now. The question is, how do you feel about it?

My feelings are mixed. I quite like 100% linen for a hot Summer’s day. I wear linen shirts, and occasionally a pair of linen pants. I used to wear linen dresses, skirts and jackets, but don’t anymore. There’s simply too much creasing and I’m no longer unconditionally at peace with the crease. I don’t mind a linen blend, but in warm and hot weather, my heart is with summery 100% cottons, or viscose, silk, rayon, and tencel blends.

Right now I often find myself giving potentially fab new items a pass because they are 100% linen. Although I like linen, and wear it from time to time, I don’t want to wear a lot of it. So I would prefer to see a little less linen at retail. I’m a nay for lots of linen.

I have one dress that’s 100% linen, the rest are blends with cotton or rayon. None are especially problematic as far as wrinkles. I like linen, but definitely wear more cotton and rayon.

I’ve added a number of linen pieces in the last three years, and love the look with a pair of wooden-soled clogs, so I’m a “yay.” I did find that the wrinkles were a bit too casual for some work events, so also added a couple summer dresses in blends that are more wrinkle-proof.

Most of my linen is in tops, with some having a blend of fabrics that includes linen. I have a few very casual pants that breathe like linen with fewer creases. I like the breezy feel of linen in heat and humidity, but wear it when I am less concerned about wrinkles. I used to press some of my linen with light starch, but that is less apt to happen now. I do a lot of wrinkle prevention after washing, stretching and straightening as it air dries. Since my pieces are very casual, it often is enough. Poor quality linen has been frustrating as the pieces seem to fray quickly at the seams, even when handled carefully.

I got a couple of linen skirts last Summer that were workhorses. I also quite like linen jackets. They get the thumbs up from me. I’m less keen on linen tops because I tend to find linen scratchy against my skin, and it bothers me in tops more than bottoms. The wrinkles don’t worry me, at least not for daytime wear. I probably prefer linen to viscose and silk. I think they are stickier than linen to wear in Summer (although I do wear those fabrics too). My favourite Summer fabric by a long margin is cotton. I also like a cotton silk blend. A little touch of silk gives cotton a nice sheen.

Nay.
I have been wearing linen for most of my life despite I never really liked it – did not like the creases and the texture. In my opinion linen is overrated. Now I have stopped wearing it, I much prefer cotton and viscose for hot weather.

Linen lover here!! I live in an extremely hot, humid climate and linen is my best friend!! The humidity practically steams the wrinkles out in real time. I am stocking up on linen this year and loving it!!

I have one linen jacket that I wear camping, as a sun coverup. Linen feels a little rough to me; I generally lean towards other fabrics.

Yes and yes! I love linen. I wear pants, shirts, tops, sweaters (my favorite), dresses, scarves. Also have a jacket and a blazer.
I iron all my clothes, I can’t imagine wearing anything straight from a dryer or a clothes line. But once ironed, wrinkles in linen don’t bother me. They smooth themselves in time and give texture to fabric.
A few things, though, worth of mentioning. Cheap linen is rough and looks not great. Linen t-shirt are often look shapeless and I wear them home.
Overall, linen is very specific, casual fabric. It gives me a sense of summer, vacations and nice, relaxed time. I don’t often wear linen to the office.
I don’t like and often avoid mixed woven fabrics. Cotton/linen mix especially, it wrinkles like linen and doesn’t have any texture.

I have a couple of linen pieces — mostly linen blends — and they’re ok. I’m not the biggest fan. Maybe it’s because a lot of linen pieces have an unstructured look or muted pastel or flaxen color palettes that I find difficult to work with? I really don’t like the prominent wrinkles/creases on linen bottoms in particular. Tops seem a little less problematic. I did buy a green linen shirt last summer and don’t wear it often, despite loving the color. I need to try styling it in a way that makes it feel more me.

My summer weather is mostly cool and humid so I wear cotton instead of linen. I do have one heavy linen jacket that is perfectly fine and a couple that are impossible to iron and never look the way I want them to so I’ve not wanted to add more linen to my wardrobe.

I love the idea of linen – cool, breezy, comfortable – and added a few pieces, mostly bottoms, over the last couple years as they’ve reemerged. But I do feel like they do me no favors from a figure flattering standpoint. And yes I do care. I just feel frumpy. I rarely reach for them. I guess I could at least wear around the house as leisure wear… but my husband already wonders why he never sees me in any of the nice clothes I buy, save for in the morning as I head out the door to work, since I go to the gym almost every day AFTER work and come home in athletic wear that I then cook in, then Jammie’s! Haha, he’s not wrong…. I could do “end of day” better.

Interesting points everyone is making, including Janet’s comment about the flaxen color and pastel shades of linen.

You’d think I’d wear a ton of linen, but I have five items, and two are the same item, a linen lantern pant from Artful Home, in black and duplicated in purple. They wrinkle, but because they have a voluminous silhouette, they seem to wrinkle less than a closer-fitting pant might. I also have a DKNY white linen dress and a DKNY short boxy white linen top, too. I recently added a sage green double breasted blazer from Dolan that serves as my nod to the 90s. I’m happy with my linen collection!

I have more linen bottoms than tops and find the creases increasingly annoying yet I think I would still chose linen over cotton for summer wear. The cotton creases seem deeper than the linen. Silk tops go better with linen than cotton.
My bottoms, especially skirts, seem to be becoming longer. Is this normal to cover bare legs? Should I have items shortened and wear hose?

I used to be a huge linen fan but that has changed over the years. I really don’t want to spend my time ironing so that’s the main reason. I can accept the creases from wear but there is no way to avoid having to iron after washing…except to wear it, wash it, and then let it hang all summer because I never get around to ironing it. It’s just not practical for me to buy it anymore.

I also lost the love when items started feeling more and more rough and thick. What’s the point of thick linen? I’m sure the places I was buying from lowered the quality to keep from rapidly escalating the price, but these factors together make it a No for me.

Yes, Peri, some linen can feel rough and scratchy on the skin.

I also do not like sleeping in linen sheets. Much prefer cotton.

Joy, what do you mean that your own linen bottoms have grown, or linen bottoms in new collections are longer?

I’m also not on Team Linen. I do have an old Boden linen blend tee that I genuinely like, but that’s because it’s the only piece that is soft and drapes well. The rest feel stiff and scratchy to me. I like cotton, silk, and blends of the two.

I’m on the fence right now. I used to love linen, but as I think about it, over the last several years, I’ve mostly had a couple of linen jackets. This season I’ve bought several pieces.

We just got home from a trip to New Orleans. On one of the days I wore a matching set–a linen vest and shorts in mauve (Madewell). I saw a pic of myself and am horrified. The vest wrinkled UP and made my mid-section super lumpy. #neveragoal And the shorts were puffy–not sure if they stretched out or if I started with them a little big. Nevertheless, I’m horrified!

I’m re-thinking the other pieces–they may go back to Nordstrom. So although the linen was nice and cool, I’m not 100% sure I’m a fan of pieces other than jackets.

Reading these comments and feeling like the President of Team Linen! To Janet’s point, I actually really hate the natural hues that you see so much of it in, but when linen takes a deep, saturated dye, it is to die for (yuk yuk yuk). I have some hot pink linen pants with bright red crabs on them from J Crew that are my absolute favorite thing to wear. I just bought a white linen blazer for what I call my fantasy life (no one around me gets fancier than Birkenstocks generally) but I already broke it out this weekend and loved it so much!

Also to the linen sheets comment! I wish everyone the experience of sleeping on ironed, high-quality linen sheets on a hot summer night with all the windows thrown open. It is sublime. I don’t have any myself but I have been a guest in Italian relatives’ homes and it was just next-level.

Oh, back to say, more on the crab pants–if wrinkles bother you, I think a print helps. You can bask in the breeziest feel and the print distracts from any wrinkling…

Linen can be so fantastic when done well. One of my favourite things is a 100% linen button-up shirt from Power of My People in navy (Canadian company but they ship to the US and internationally). After washing, I do straighten it out on a hanger as Eliza mentions, but I do iron it as I like the look of it and I find ironing relaxing and satisfying. When wearing it doesn’t seem to get too wrinkled, even when I roll and scrunch the sleeves, but maybe because it’s a dark colour. It is also lightweight (3.7 oz.). I am eyeing a pair of 100% linen shorts on their website, but many sizes are out of stock so I am hoping they will be restocked in time for summer. I also have a 55% linen 45% cotton dress from M&S and it doesn’t get too wrinkly even where I’ve sat. Linen is a Yay from me!

I have some very soft linen summer Pajamas and they are cool and comfortable to wear. I prefer to wear cotton and silk clothing in summer and don’t see me adding any additional linen items into my wardrobe.

Absolutely no linen for me. After the last round of linen in the 1990s, I swore off of it forever. I prefer looking crisp and neat, and do not like ironing… and linen is so hard to iron. I do not like looking like a limp dish rag!

I own a white A-line linen skirt and a white linen blazer. (They are not a suit, but could be used as such.) Both are lined. They crease, of course, but not terribly, and I love them for their roomy fit and that wonderful feeling of summer that white linen gives me. Both items were handed down to me years ago. They look timeless and can be styled in lots of different ways.

I am not looking for more linen items, but wouldn’t say no if a tempting item at a reasonable price should cross my way. I think I would prefer a pastel or bright.

Years ago, I owned a black linen skirt and black linen pants, but I didn’t enjoy wearing them, as both items looked bad after only a couple of hours. They were not lined, and I wonder whether this was part of the problem. Anyway, I guess there are various linen qualities. Some seem to crease more than others.

I am torn. July and August is humid and only linen and cotton is wearable. The wrinkles can look ugly. Maybe I will go for cotton over linen in future.

When all of the linen comes out each year I need to remind myself that I like the *idea* of linen but not the reality! I go through phases of buying it and then remember the creases and get rid of them.

That said, I did just buy a pair of Athleta flowy linen pants that are a dusty blue and came in tall. I figured it may show creases less. But like you, Angie, when I see something is linen I will skip it usually. I’m looking for the perfect casual sundress but not in linen!

I like the casual linen look, a little rumpled. There aren’t enough opportunities for me to wear it, though; it’s good for only those weeks that we have heat waves, which is usually 2 times a summer, maybe 3, so I’m not looking for more of it.

I love linen on top, and for a dress- but unlined linen pants or skirts seem to jiggle/bounce along with my backside- so those have been excused from my closet. Otherwise, I welcome 100% linen tops, wrinkled or crisp.

I love linen. I’m an even bigger fan of linen blends as long as they are very rich in linen. I especially love linen with a touch of viscose, which seems to preserve the drape and lightness of the linen but helps a lot with the creasing. Marks and Spencer’s linen rich garments have been real winners for me.

I’m always a bit rumpled, so the inevitable creasing of linen isn’t an issue for me. More recently, I’ve purchased linen/viscose or linen/cotton items.

It’s a remarkable fabric, my favorite use, for which I think it’s irreplaceable, is in the kitchen, as dishtowels. Fast drying, almost non stainable, durable and long lasting.

I have some cotton/linen knits I like very much but no 100% linen items. It’s not even the wrinkles that bother me, as much as the kind of overall lack of definition of un-ironed linen and I am not currently regularly ironing my daily wear.

Love linen – the feel, the look, the ability to wear long sleeves in hot weather are all such pros for me. And the sustainability. Linen is one of the most sustainable fabrics, whereas many other summer fabrics – cotton, rayon, viscose, etc – are some of the least sustainable. Trying hard to make my closet work for me and for the environment.

I have a black linen jacket which is lined so it doesn’t crease except the sleeves which I wear scrunched up. I also have a long black linen mix dress which is also lined which doesn’t crease at all. I recently bought back linen trousers and I like how casual they look. Really I don’t need linen as it’s not very warm in Ireland but it’s a nice change and makes me feel summery. I agree that itchy rough linen is very uncomfortable and I wouldn’t wear it. I would love a white linen jacket but haven’t found one I like yet.

Thumbs down on woven linen fabrics for me, as I’m also not at peace with the crease nor am I fond of ironing.

Two enthusiastic thumbs up on high-quality linen knit tops, sweaters, and dresses. They have a great sheen to them, are much less wrinkly than woven linen, and are super breathable in oppressive heat. One can also typically gentle-machine-wash and line dry linen knits to good effect. I wish there were more linen knit items available at retail!

I do have a few linen items, some are 100% linen, others are a blend. I don’t love all the wrinkles, so I tend to wear my linen only on the most hottest, humid days.

Love linen, whether 100% or a blend. I have a few linen shirts which are new summer essentials for me as I prefer more coverage the last few years. My favourite is from Australian brand Assembly Label. I should have bought five rather than just one! Not bothered by wrinkles here although I do usually iron before wearing so I at least start off unwrinkled

Seems linen fans are in the minority but I like it for summer. I have linen dresses, tops, shorts, and wouldn’t say no to the right pair of pants. I think the wrinkles bring a casualness to my summer outfits which brings my dressiness more in line with my environmental norms.

I quite like linen myself. I have a really lovely-quality navy linen dress and is aging so beautifully and soft. It was a spendy purchase at an art fair 7-8 years ago. That said, I purchased a bright green Old Navy “boyfriend” linen shirt last year on sale for a song and it’s been worn a million times!

Like many here, I don’t like linen pants for the creasing.

Love Linen and don’t mind the relaxed wrinkled look at all. I have been happy to see much more 100% Linen AND Cotton in Retail these days and I am scooping it up! Seems to me like its been a scarcity of these fabrics over the past several years. I have grown tired of the blends that don’t seem to be quality or wear for long.

I had lots of Talbots Irish linen when I was working. I felt very elegant in their trousers and jackets. I never minded the wrinkles, and I actually enjoy ironing. I find it very zen.

It seems to me that cheaper linen is not worth it. I bought two linen tops (Quince and Boden) last summer and they both feel scratchy after a few hours. I find cotton gauze more comfortable now.

Huge linen fan here! I had a lot of thrifted and hand-me-down linen in the late 90s/early 00s and I love seeing it get popular again. The way linen softens, fades and relaxes over time makes it one of my favorite fabrics; I love garments that improve with age, looking lived-in rather than ratty.

I’m devoted to a handful of small artisan brands who source very high quality linen fabrics, and this makes all the difference. Many are based in the Baltic region but there are some great US and Canadian labels making amazing garments out of imported linen textiles. A lot of mainstream linen is very thin, which means it’s sheer in light colors, wrinkles easily and doesn’t drape nicely. Shopping from a handful of makers I trust, along with in-person thrifting where I can assess the quality, has given me pretty good results.

I run cold so I don’t wear a lot of linen (or cotton for that matter) during the winter months, but it’s definitely the cornerstone of my warm-weather wardrobe.

Yes to linen. I need to wear long sleeves and long pants often for sun and bug protection in summer, and only linen is cool enough for me to do that. So most of my linen is in jackets or pants. I don’t mind a blend at all.

I’m a big “yay.” That being said most of my linen pieces are tops. I do have 2 pairs of pants that I mostly use for casual beach wear and I don’t worry about the creases.
My favorite is 100% cotton!

I am a yay. Although I am potentially close to saturation point! It is not great for some situations – especially car travel where you need to look good at the end of it.

I also have two sets of linen sheets… Love them.

Add me to Team Ambivalent! I really love the look and feel of linen–but don’t love the extreme creasing that some is subject to. I own several linen shirts, and I would absolutely buy a skirt or pants in a cotton/linen or silk/ linen or high quality viscose/ linen blend. My Paul Smith jacket is an unusual wool -linen blend and is unlined except for the sleeves. I cannot believe how lovely that jacket is to wear in a wide range of warm-ish to hot temperatures. And how little it wrinkles.

I’m a linen fan but I run cold, and where I live it’s not humid and rarely gets hot. When I travel to hotter climes, I hesitate to stuff linen in my suitcase, much less travel in it knowing that I will arrive as a rumpled mess.

I like linen but I don’t find it a lot and when I do it is often in a very unstructured cut that doesn’t work for me. But I am always interested in a linen blend in a more structured cut.

I’m a nay. I don’t love the creasing or the rough texture of so much of today’s linen. I used to wear linen back in the 80s and 90s, and the linen had a harder, smoother texture, which I loved.

For me now, it’s cotton all the way. I’m also a fan of rayon. Uniqlo used to do 100% rayon blouses that had a lovely hand. I still have a quartet of those blouses that I enjoy wearing.

I live in Florida and have actually been adding more linen to my wardrobe this past year because I adore how it feels in our long, humid summers. I’m surprised to find myself among a limited number of fans!

I already owned 2 pairs of 100% linen pants from Athleta, which don’t wrinkle much and I recently bought a pair of linen-cotton blend pants at TJ Maxx, which have turned into a total workhorse and garnered lots of compliments. I’ve also just purchased a heavily-embroidered linen tank and 2 pairs of Petal & Pup linen-cotton blend paper-waist shorts from Nordstrom. I haven’t worn them yet, so can’t comment on the wrinkles of those.

I do feel at ease with some creasing though – I tend to wear linen in casual settings, and with a top that stays pristine through wear, and it’s worth the trade-off to me.

I’ve been afraid to buy anything with viscose in it, even though I know it feels lovely, because I’m afraid of it shrinking. I’d love to hear others comments on washing viscose.

Definite yay – as GenX who came of age in the 90s I didn’t even realize linen was trending so much as an essential I expected would always be around. It makes even more sense now in a warming climate (sigh), and at age 50 when I’m often running hot. I’m particularly happy that natural linen tones are back in force and I have a blazer, jumpsuit and pants acquired last year.

I love linen and have some in all kinds of clothing items. It just nothing screams more summer for me than a good linen. That been said I also preffer blends as 100% linen grows like crazy after a day of wear.
I bought me a shirt dress which fitted in my correct size so well when in the shop, but after wearing it a day at work (of course, it was mostly sitting at my desk) it grew 2 sizes bigger on me, at least- I was so frustrated I had to exchange it for one of 2 sizes smaller-I just couldn’t believe!
Then again, back in the past it was the problem of being available only in that natural flax color-which I always loved-but how many pieces a girl needs in that one shade?? I couldn’t buy more of it-when all other fabrics were available in all the colors of the world!
During the Covid ages with all the leisure neutral/natural/pastel color trend and found out I am again in love in those flaxy creamy taupey-beige pastel shades especially a lightest sage/mint green is my fave for 2 seasons already now-and trying to stock up on it.
Another true love is black linen for a summer date dress -always great and ageless- a must to have for me.

I’ll chime in too, I am more of a crisp cotton person. I don’t like how linen sits on me (although I appreciate how breathable it is!), I feel that it looses its shape fairly quickly and I end up looking very… shapeless if that makes sense.
It also has a very distinct summery vibe I feel, and it’s not matching very well with my style.
Denim, cotton poplin, cotton twill are my favourites for summer.
