Talbots is an East Coast clothing brand that is very size inclusive. It offers petite, regular, plus, and plus petite sizing across many of its items. Unfortunately this is not reflected in the body shapes of the models who showcase the merchandise, so you need to click and search for the items in your size. For example, the stock photo of a top is shown in a regular size model (which Talbots calls “misses”), but on the product page you’ll see the availability across a large range of sizes under the headings, “petite,” “plus,” and “plus petite.”
Several of my clients have had an extremely good run with Talbots, so I’m sharing some of the winners below. The merchandise is generally fabulous quality, and fabrics are quite luxe. The inside of the garments are fabulously finished. Knitted tops and tees are particularly lovely quality and launder well. Lots of items are on sale now too.
1. Talbots Tops
As some of my clients say, “Talbots gets my body.” Their tops seem to find a fabulous balance between being sufficiently fluid in the right places so that they don’t cling to the midsection, and sufficiently tapered in the right places so that they don’t hang like tents. They can be worn untucked with some structure. There is plenty of room in the shoulders and bust, and armholes aren’t cut too low. Necklines aren’t always high and constricting. There are also lots of small interesting design details on cuffs, hemlines, and necklines that denote quality and add that bit of punchy extra. You might need to size down on tops. Lots of patterns, colours, and size options when you click through the links.
2. Talbots Bottoms
Talbots pants and jeans tend to be a good fit on those who like room in the thighs and seat, and on the midsection. They can work as well for pear-shaped body types as they do for apple-shaped body types. Rises are generally in a good spot, and fabrics are substantial. Talbots skirts are equally great and come in a range of silhouettes. Their knitted skirts are particularly comfortable and drape well. Like tops, you might need to size down. Lots of patterns, colours, and size options when you click through the links.
