Rocking black leather pants

Like many, many other people, I ached to be a rock star in another life. I can’t sing or dance, but the thought of being able to do so like the best rock stars of our generation seems magical. I’d sport these leather pants in a heartbeat if the fit, quality and price was right. I’d match them up with something soft, silky and drapey like a blouse or item of knitwear to create a contrast with the hash sleekness of the leather. A pair of killer booties and piles of pearls to finish of the look and there you go. Quite delicious.

Leather pants are a fringe trend. They’re awfully expensive and probably a devil to wear, but strangely appealing. Would you wear them?

Rocking black leather pants

haha- nope, and you would probably be one of the first to tell me not to ;-)

Nope, definitely not me. Besides, they look awesome but they also look hot and sweaty. I can’t get the image of Ross Geller out of my head (anybody remember?!)

bethw: Ross was so funny and very realistic! Love it!
Leather pants look killer on those of us who don´t eat…..

A whole lot of no for me! I’ve been lurking around the boards for quite awhile and I’d be willing to try a lot of new things (skinny jeans, day dresses) but leather pants are just too far from me.
Bethw…I just love that episode of Friends! Poor Ross!

I think leather pants can be tres chic. I’ve always admired them on women who pull off the look. But somehow this is an item that seems to work best on tall and slim hipped women – and I’ve never been tempted to try them myself.
I would, however, wear a leather pencil skirt and have in fact tried a few over the years!

I agree with Antje. I don’t dislike the look, but it is not made for curvy women so I’m out.

If money was out of the equation I would be in, they would have to be skinny and black. I would wear them with a voluminous blouse.

I would rock them in a heartbeat if my current lifestyle included a calendar chock full of fabulous events, places to wear. But, as a stay at home mom (with nowhere fabulous to go in the foreseeable future!) I would feel ridiculous wearing leather pants to PTO meetings, etc. so will admire them from afar…

Beth – That Friends episode is the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this post. Too funny!

I would wear a pair if the leather was either distressed or suede. I would not like a shiny look but for the right occasion would try a matte version. I think jeans are the best cut of pants for me. I do not often that cut in anything non-denim. I remember wearing a suede black pencil skirt in the 80′s.

hell yes I would! Those are hot!

I’d totally rock a leather pencil skirt – but the skinny pants do not flatter me, and even if they made bootcut/trouser cut leather pants, that just seems to defeat the purpose…

I agree with Erin… hell yes I would! THey ARE hot!

Not in a million years.

That said, I inherited a luscious buttery-soft Ann Taylor leather pencil skirt from Shopping Friend that I am dying to wear. Just have to get closer to goal weight, then look out!

So I guess I’ll need to grow another four inches and stop snacking.

just got 3 pairs…black skinny, black skinny snap ankle and straight leg red leather…LOVE ém!

they look great with dressy heels, ballerina flats and sneakers…

crop white or grey T with wedge sneakers….YUM! plus they are sooo comfortable!

Lived in them when I was a lot younger, along with a purple mohawk and a leather moto jacket in black ‘natch! I didn’t look like the girl you’d bring home to mom or looked like she’d ever be someone’s mother. I wish I had pictures from then! Now, I am someone’s mom and a wife and sooooo suburban, much to my chagrin sometimes. No, I wouldn’t be wearing them now. A leather pencil skirt, maybe! I have a black leather car coat with turn lock “buttons” like on a Coach bag that I love and wear when I I want to be edgier (for my town that is edgier!)

I would totally wear a slim pair if money wasn’t the object, for going out only. I do actually own a sort of a substitute – a pair of black skinnies that has a shiny finish, thy look a little wet and almost lather-like.

Oh! I like the idea of a leather pencil skirt too. But leather skinnies would be my first choice.

No way would I wear this. For a woman of a certain age to wear leather skinnies is to look like you are trying too hard unless she really has the over-the-top personality or a lifestyle to pull it off.

I bought a pair of black leather pants @ a consignment shop. Not only do they fit me like a glove, they were onlu $40. I feeland look very sexy in them

Nope, not for me! I’m intrigued by the idea of a leather pencil skirt, though.

I did *give* my daughter this pair of zipper knee motorcycle pants with leather trim for Christmas. She found them for a song at the Charlotte Ronson sample sale. I was skeptical at first, but loved the edginess once I saw them on her.

When I loose that last 5 lbs I will be rocking my black leather pants again …. I would love to see (I’m so visual) a few suggestions on what to pair them with – do we have any pictures?

I used to wear leather clothing — pants, skirt, bodice top. I can’t fit any of these anymore! Would I revisit? My heart says “Yes!” but my mind says “Get Real.” I’m not sure leather pants are a practical part of a MOTG uniform :)

Unless you are younger than 25, or actually a rock star, I am not a fan of this look. I have seen older women wear it, and it just does not look fab. Sorry!!

And yes, I remember Ross’s hilarious scene with leather pants. Hee hee!!

I’m also going to be the voice of dissent! I don’t think you need to be tall and skinny to look hot in leather skinnies. Petite Eva Longoria would rock this look and so would the beautifully curvy Beyoncé :-)

I wanted to wear these when I was a young rocker wanna be, I did have a faux leather skirt, even in my 40′s. I don’t know about the pants though. They do not look comfortable so I never went there with my rocker fantasy.

Ummm … no. There is no way I would feel good wearing these. I guess I’ve never wanted to be a rocker either though. :)

I don’t even want to wear these, vegan or not. Wore a pair of faux leather pants when I was 16. I have had my fill for one lifetime. It is just too much leather for one outfit and once you add leather shoes and a leather bag…forget it.

I’ve worn them for years-but in a bitter chocolate. Whenever they come back in style I just pull my classic leather pants out of the closet and wear them in whatever way is chic at the moment. They never look dated. They cost a fortune at the time, even on sale, but have been worth it. If you’re going to get a pair, they MUST be lined with a slippery fabric so you don’t end up like Ross!

Okay, I found myself on YouTube catching up onRoss Geller’s leather pants. . .

I am so not built for this sort of look, but if I was and if I was a few decades younger, I might try it. But as-is, I’m another one that I know Angie would give the thumbs down!

I got a buttery soft, fully lined black leather pencil skirt at the Salvation Army recently–for $7. It fits like a glove and hits me right in the middle of the knee. I’ve worn it three times so far: twice in the evening (once dressed up for an elegant restaurant with a velvet top and heels) and once by day (with tights, boots, a t-shirt, and a denim jacket).

I think the modest length and classic cut keeps the skirt from edging over into trashy. I am not sure I would have spent retail, but I am loving the look at thrift-store prices!

It is a rare thing for Angie to give something a firm hands-down! I’m surprised so many people think this would be the case.

While I expressed my distaste for these already, I can’t imagine why they would be any different from wearing regular skinnies in terms of styling them.

No, not for me. I’m an animal lover, so the thought of wearing a hide kind of freaks me out. I do have a leather jacket, but only bought it for safety when riding a motorcycle. I do appreciate the rocker vibe, so I might consider it in a good quality pleather if there is such a thing.

Actually, I used to own/wear a pair of black leather pants when I was much younger. They are not that hot or painful to wear-being a natural skin. I also had a black leather skirt which was great…., I gave it to the Salvation Army. I’m small and thin…got the figure for both..but would this look be something a late forties gal could pull off? I guess for me…I would be afraid I’d look silly with the black leather pants and those heels…but, I would wear the skirt with a top that added a touch of classic and shoes or boots toned down.

Yes, I would love a pair of leather pants, not so much for the skinny rocker look as for the hip motorcycle look. But I would try skinnies.

Recently I saw a petite Japanese woman wearing black leather pants that fit more like leather trousers, and they looked fabulous on her. (That’s for the women who think they have to be tall to wear them.)

OK, that Ross episode of Friends is one of my favorites!!
I never envisioned myself wearing leather pants. I do like bits of rockerish pieces like belts, bracelets, purses but that’s all I can take for myself. I like the look on other women who wear it with confidence. Just not something I ever desired for myself.

I knew a woman in her late? thirties who wore leather pants like no one else i’d ever seen – classy and sure of herself. if i could look like that, i would wear them in a heartbeat. they’d just have to be the right style & fit (probably more like trousers than skinny jeans)

Kristine, as someone who wore pleather pants in the past: Be aware of sweaty legs! Pleather doesn’t breathe. I do not recommend it, although they can at least be warm in winter. A nice alternative is what Tanya mentioned: coated denim.

A leather skirt is something I didn’t consider before…That is a look that I would love to rock!

I would wear them in a heartbeat if:
- they looked flattering on me
- I could make them look sophisticated and classy
- they’d be comfortable (I imagine you might get a little sweaty in them;-)
- if I knew when to wear them (I don’t see myself going grocery shopping in leather pants;-)

I love the leather skinny pants look with booties or edgy pumps, a feminine voluminous blouse or oversized cowl neck sweater (saw that look on DVF this Winter) and, yep, lots of pearls.

And Angie: no need to stop snacking at all:-) You would totally rock them this very second!!

Oh yes girls, believe it or not, I totally rocked leather pants back in the 90s. And I would rock them again :) You gotta pay the price though, literally: cheap leather will bag out in the seat.

I could never wear this look. Even if I lost 100 pounds, I still wouldn’t feel comfortable. That said, I think someone as lovely and edgy as Angie could wear leather pants and look marvelous, but I never could! As with most trends — good for some, bad for others.

Hmmm…I actually have two pair in a box somewhere – a jean-style pair in black and a sleeker style in chocolate brown. I loved them both; they were sleek and comfortable (warm, but not sticky since they’re lined in satin). They’d fit again now, too. Hmm….maybe I should get them out of the box, although I don’t know when I’d actually wear them – I don’t think they’d really fit the “mom on the go” formula.

I bought a pait of streatch leather skinnies in Vegas a few years a go….Angie you would love them…a little scrunch at the ankle. They are adorable and I LOVE them…they don’t look biker at all..Should send a photo:)

YES, YES, AND MORE YES!!!

But you probably could have guessed that. ;-)

I’d be the mom rocking them at the PTO meeting – hee hee hee!

YES! But only if someone purchased them for me, I’ve got other things to spend my money on right now, like shoes! Love those grey ones.

I always think of leather for winter.

I would love to rock some leather pants! Especially like those in the left pic. Those look perfect. But as is my usual lament – they are just WAY too expensive. I shop thrift stores. I have actually tried on a few pairs at some thrifts, but they are always too short. (A common problem with pants, since I’m 5’10″.) I nearly bought a lovely camel-colored buttery leather skirt with nice zip pocket detailing, but the color looked really weird against my pale skin and I wasn’t sure about the fit. It was so beautiful though.

Add me to the list of those who rocked the leather pants in the late 90′s. I remember wearing them to holiday parties with a soft angora cream cowl neck sweater circa 1998. Mine were bootcut with denim styling (5-pocket) and still look fantastic (yes, I’m a hoarder – they are still in my closet). I am not sure if I’d wear them now but I do with it’s a pretty cool look!

I am in.

I have a black leather pencil skirt, which I adore.

Angie and other YLF posters have convinced me that shorter girls could make these pants work. But I suppose the cut and quality of the leather is everything.

I will let you know if I find a pair will post a pic ;)

I have one personal axiom for dressing at my age : if I have to take a running jump to get into it, then I probably shouldn’t wear it :)

For my lifestyle and personality, I can’t imagine wearing them. I recently saw Lauren Hutton, who is 65, at an event wearing them . Boy did she look amazing !!!!!

I’m not such a pants person myself, but in support of Angie, I recently saw Sally at Already Pretty rock a pair of these. She is beautiful, but not tall and hipless, and she looked amazing. It was a similar look to her wearing over the knee boots. Very sleek. Even though I’m pretty tall and have slender hips/legs, I don’t do pants that don’t have any stretch, so I will admire them from afar.

In my younger days, I always coveted a pair, but couldn’t afford them. Now I think I’m a little too old to pull them off. Is age a factor in pulling off this look, Angie? Or is it all in the attitude? ;-)

And I do have a pair of butterscotch suede jeans that Angie has given the thumb up to, but it’s been too warm (and wet!) here in the PNW to really wear them this winter.

Hi – I wore black leather pants back in the mid 80′s – OMG, my boyfriend at the time, now my husband of 23 years loved loved loved them and he still likes to reminisce abouthow I looked in them. So I would totally not wear them myself now, as I would hate to damage the image my wonderful man has of me of back then. :D

I’ve worn pleather and what would translate as “fake pleather” pants in the past — mostly during the winters when I was still living in Shanghai, where such things were less odd. I can’t imagine wearing them now — Hong Kong is far too hot for such — but I do daydream of them when I see them on others~. I had pleather pants in blue (!) and “fake pleather” in black and would wear them with tunics, dresses, and slightly-snug sweaters. I don’t think that I could ever bring myself to wear proper leather pants (I admit that I loved the pairs that I tried on — I can’t even bring myself to wear leather shoes these days), but the look is gorgeous.

I would do leather pants in a heartbeat if I had the budget and somewhere to wear them. Angie, have you ever played one of those Guitar Hero/Rock Band games? It’s the perfect outlet for wannabe rock stars – all the fun but no skill necessary. I always get dressed in skinnies, glittery flowy tops and tough boots if I know I’m going to be playing one of those games at a friend’s house :)

I have owned a pair of leather pants. They looked decent, but I never wore them. I guess they were just too edgy for me. I still like the idea of rocking a pair of leather pants…but I just don’t feel the attitude to sport them to their best advantage…

I actually like the look, but living in a warm climate, the sweat factor alone means I would never consider a pair of these!!!

I don’t think leather pants have an age-limit. I’ve seen women in their 60s look fabulous in them.

If I had the body for it, I would love to rock a pair of brown leather pants. At a size 16, though, I just don’t think I’d ever find a pair that fit and even if I did, it probably wouldn’t be pretty. I saw a pair in vogue about 5 years ago paired with a soft silk blouse and a bit of classic gold jewellery. I’d also wear them with a cashmere turtleneck; I bet it would be nice and cozy during cold Canadian winters.

I prefer leather pants when they are styled a bit less as rock & roll — which seems too obvious for me — and a bit more uptown. For example, I’m love this look:
http://media.photobucket.com/i.....009/l1.jpg

I find them visually appealing, but that’s where my fantasy ends. I wonder about the comfort factor (is it possible to dance in them at all?), cost, cost per wear, etc. I did try a pair of faux leather leggings just for fun. They seemed ok, but for now I’ll stick to skinnies in a cool dark wash for those rare occasions.

When I want to feel like a rock star – I’m all over killer footwear.

When I was in high school (a decade ago) I badly wanted a pair of leather pants – not that I would have spent money on them at the time, but it just happened to be the item that I most craved. Why, I’m not sure – I was as far from a rocker chick as could be.

Now? Well, all I can think of is the Friends episode where Ross gets stuck in a pair of leather pants… and I’m pretty sure my rear would look much better in skinny denim as opposed to skinny leather.

On the comfort factor – they’re really actually very, very comfortable (warm definitely – I wouldn’t wear them outside of fall/winter here and not in a warm climate) but they’re really not any stiffer than thick denim. Mine were/are incredibly soft and just felt great to wear (I’m sure that satin lining really helped). Hmmm….I really out to get them out of that box – although hubby never did really like them.

I have 2 pairs from the early noughtie’s (00′s) but they are boot leg. I would not wear them now as is however if I could have the legs taken in to make them skinnies, I think that would breathe new life into them. I may have to research that option. Anyone know if I can have this done??

I would like more ideas on HOW to wear them though…

Did anyone else notice how weird the girl’s butt looks in the middle picture?? Poor photoshopping just to make her leg look thinner, at the expense of her derriere. For shame.

I’d love to have a pair. Unfortunately, I live in a tropical country and they will be too warm for me. I keep imagining Ross’s leather pants fiasco. Haha

Yep, I’m all over this trend; in fact I’m waiting for the pair I ordered to arrive! I’m picturing them with a long-ish tunic and perhaps a drapey, belted boyfriend cardigan, plus some towering wedges or booties. I’ve never owned a pair of leather pants, so I’m excited to try out something that has come and gone over the years but is brand new to me.

Oooo! I want those gray leather pants on the far right!!! I have been craving leather skinny pants for a while now, but the cost is putting me off. Plus, I’m not sure they’re work appropriate at my job, and if they aren’t then there’s no where else for me to wear them really, as I don’t go out much. I’m 37 and I don’t think leather pants have an age limit (maybe that’s just wishful thinking!) But seriously, if you look good in skinny jeans and tone down the rock gorl look, why wouldn’t leather pants look great? With a super soft and drapey loose necked knit top? And a big gold cuff? Awesome. I used to have a gorgeous suede skirt from Ferragamo (thrift store purchase) that I so miss. Since I sew most of my own clothes now, at some point I’m going to sew a suede skirt and maybe someday make my own leather skinnies. And if I’m 80 at that point, so be it!

I have a pair from the early 00s. They are bootcut with a slit up the back of each leg. They don’t have a waistband, and they close with a hidden side zip. They’re a little higher in the rise. I used to wear them just like dress slacks in the Fall and Winter to work with sweaters and low heels. If I still fit into them I would probably be wearing them! One of my co-workers (in her 40s) has a peiced black leather A-line skirt that hits just below the knee that is very fabulous and not at all trashy looking. I would go for something like that in a hearbeat!

Hell yeah, leather pants are awesome. They’re so misunderstood, though, due to stereotypes and ignorance.

Here’s a short myth/truth list from someone who wears them, not simply who saw an episode of Friends.

Leather pants are:
- hot and sweaty: Not true at all, unless you wear them jogging.
- uncomfortable: Not true. God, so *not* true. Just think about it: people wear leather jackets and brag about how soft and comfortable they are. Leather pants are made of the same, or even softer, leather. You can’t compare pants made for motorcycling, which are heavy, with pants made for luxury wear.
- only for rockstars: True only insofar as that’s an image associated with them. it’s like saying a Ferrari is only for a rockstar. Bull$hit. If you can afford them, they’re for you – end of story.
- look cheap. Sure, if you buy cheap ones. Check out the ones from Ralph Lauren or Gucci. They look and feel “luxurious”, not “cheap”.

I agree with Hal, leather pants are not uncomfortable at all. I used to have a pair. Sadly, they do not fit anymore. Leather warms up with your body and moves with you. I have been thinking of getting another pair, I just have to find the right ones.

Heck yeah, if I could turn back the clock 20 years and 50 lbs!

I impulsively bought a $22 pair of faux leather pants with scrunched cuffs at F21. They are perfect for a trend fix without the steep price or the worry of ruining them. They are very comfortable and actually fit me really well (I’m 5’1″!), and look pretty darn authentic.

Being a guy, it often comes over as gay! But I have two pairs and I love them! I’m straight and don’t care what others think! In fact the times I’ve worn them to house parties and bars, I got really great compliments!

They are extremely comfortable and warm! Mine are satin lined which means they don’t sweat!

Definitly rocking these from a guys perspective! And I love seeing the ladies in them too!

I love leather pants! Wore them back in the 80s and I’m wearing them today. They’re my go-to wardrobe basic for a casual but sophisticated look, although I usually wear them more at night.

You can do far more with a quality pair of black leather pants than you can with skinny jeans or leggings – they are so versatile – chunky sweaters, wool blazers, silk blouses, heels, boots … dress them up, dress them down. Any way you do it, you feel just a bit edgy.

Anyway – yeah, I love ‘em!

[...] vote yay. I’d wear the right pair of leather pants in a heartbeat. I’d probably also wear a leather skirt but am past my prime for baggy leather short shorts, [...]
