Fashion at the 2009 Emmy Awards

September 21st, 2009

My favourite red carpet frocks are usually the ones with strong, sleek, simple and retro lines. I don’t fancy the looks that are overly revealing, ruffle-y, shiny, voluminous or ornate nearly as much. But picking red carpet favourites is a subjective thing and I wouldn’t be surprised if we had completely different lists.

This year, Emmy’s style belonged to the gents because they generally dazzled more than the ladies. A first! Just for kicks, here are my lists:

Blokes:

  • Jon Hamm could not be beat. Classic, immaculate, clean cut and very movie star handsome. A sight for sore eyes.
  • John Krasinski looked fabulous in his satin trimmed tux and skinny black tie. Utterly adorable.
  • Steve Carell was wearing a similar satin piped tux and looked just as dashing. He’s a scream.
  • Seal’s all black suit ensemble with straggly polka dot tie was dark and edgy. He pulls this look off like no one else can.
  • Kevin Bacon was delicious in his mod tux, messy hairdo and geeky black framed specs. So cute.
  • Alec Baldwin looked distinguished in his tux with broad lavender tie which matched the colour of his hair and eyes. Very fab.

Lasses:

  • Debra Messing in a magnificent one-shouldered electric red gown was my favorite of the evening. A redhead in tomato red is pure perfection.
  • Heidi Klum was flawless in a classic strapless, beaded black fish tail gown. It’s easy to make the best dressed list if you can look like that when you’re 8 months pregnant. Seal accessorized her ensemble perfectly.
  • Sandra Oh in a vintage gold strapless gown was stunning from head to toe. The corded low slung belt was an elegant touch and I loved how the clutch matched her hair.
  • Jamie-Lynn Sigler was beautiful in a cowl front halter-necked metallic gown. A superb take on modern retro glam.

Did you see the show? If so, let’s hear your favourites for the night.

I did not watch the award show, but I did see the red carpet pictures. I agree that the above ladies looked stunning. I also loved Chloe Sevigny’s dress, and Ginnifer Goodwin’s haircut. I didn’t see the gentlemen, but I like that Alec Baldwin looked good. He reminds me of my dad. :-)

Danja, you have a handsome Dad :-)

I liked the cut of Chloe Sevigny’s dress too. But I felt that the pattern washed her out. I’d have loved to see it in another colour.

I too, really liked Chloe Sevigny’s dress but to Angie’s point, it did wash her out. Sandra Oh looked fantastic. I find Jamie Lynn to look good no matter what she is wearing. She carries herself wonderfully, I think. John Hamm looked immaculate and so did John Krasinski. So sleek and handsome. I’ve nursed a secret crush on Kevin Bacon since I was a teenager so naturally I found him dashing as usual :-) As also Seal and Neil Patrick Harris.

I am interested in the lengths of the pant legs on both of the men pictured above. Both are very long and the fabric breaks over the shoe. George Clooney, on the other hand, usually has his pants hemmed so that there isn’t a break and, to my eyes, it looks cleaner. Angie, what is better for the guys? Hemmed for a break or no break? Is this something that goes in and out of style?

I missed the show. But HM was poring over photos last night and quipped, “Is Heidi Klum ALWAYS pregnant?” Hee.

I didn’t see the show, but my first reaction was that the dresses are rather plain. After flipping through all the pictures, I agree with your picks, Angie. The men definitely stole the show although I can’t help rooting for Heidi Klum. She does look great. At 2 months behind her, my belly is definitely *not* as large as hers and I’m already getting comments and looks that expect me to be popping any minute. Sigh.

I didn’t see the show, darn it! I am still looking through pictures online. I just want to say that I am so happy for John Cryer for winninng finally! He is so cute and funny. I see his striped vest is getting flack online this morning, but it suits his personality.

I agree with you, I also thought the men looked great, I also like the simple elegance of the dresses you chose,

Debra Messing always seems to do a good job of dressing her body, I like how she has not been augmented, or over tanned.:)

Oh boy, I don’t care for Mila Kunis’ dress ending at her ankles with the heavy looking shoes. I don’t like Kim Kardasian’s huge earrings either.
I do like the purple dress with the red flowers on the hip, worn by Padma Lakshmi. The colors look lovely with her skin tone. I also think Christina Applegate looks beautiful. I love her dress.
The guys do look great.

Nobody does the baby bump as beautifully as Heidi. No wonder she’s “always” pregnant. ;-)

I had the awards on but kept getting distracted with phone calls. If I could have any of the dresses, it would be the lovely lady-like off-white gown worn by Kara DioGuardi. Jamie-Lynn Sigler’s is a close second. It’s interesting to see so many bright colors, although Tina Fey looked good in her black dress.

Heidi Klum looks fantastic. What’s that say if I often felt better in my body while pregnant (four times) than not pregnant?

Abbie, the breaklines on the men’s slacks in these pictures are quite pronounced. It’s a style. I actually quite like a break line. I prefer a cleaner look (sans the breakline) when the pants are very tapered at the hem. Otherwise, I think a bold breakline looks luxurious.

I really thought the dress Jennifer Carpenter wore was just stunning. It really stands out! Of course I would love to be able to look that great in that dress!
