Fab casual top for the heatwave: cotton ruffle tank

July 30th, 2009

I don’t often single out specific items, but I’m impressed with every inch of this ruffle tank from J. Crew and I highly recommend that you give it a try if the style is to your taste. It might not look very different to the average run of the mill knitted top at first glance, but fabrication and construction make it a cut above the rest.

The top is 100% cotton and machine washable, which is ideal in sweltering heat. It’s made of super soft, better-end knitted slub yarn that has body and drapes to perfection. The lawn ruffles that run down the front of the bodice and around the neckline are made of woven cotton. This is clever. It gets you double the textural interest and a crisper looking garment after laundering (woven ruffles generally hold their shape better than knitted ruffles).

The silhouette is flattering too. It’s not overly tight at all. Mine hangs looser than it does on the model, which is another plus in the heat and ideal for hiding those little extras around the mid riff. No clinging. But it’s tailored in all the right places so that you look and feel pulled together in a perfectly casual way. The neckline is high enough that you won’t need to wear a camisole, but low enough to work for bustier gals too.

Fab on its own, or as a layering piece under a waistcoat, jacket or cardigan. Unfortunately the style doesn’t come in petites and at $35 a pop it’s by no means cheap. But I’m tough to please when it comes to knits and this item passes my grade with flying colours. I’m duplicating.

I love the look of this tank on the model. I know you mentioned that the neckline could work for us busty gals, but does the ruffle detail add too much attention to the chest?

What color are you duplicating Angie?

Angie

Love it when you pick things like this for us. Do you think it would work on me or did we decide that neckline is not the best for me?

Thanks!

Debbie

I bought this from my local J.Crew. I agree with Angie that this is a fabulous shirt. However, it did seem to me they run a bit big. Georgia – as a fairly busty person myself I thought the vertical ruffles helped to elongate the body. Angie, that is a very interesting idea to duplicate in the same color!

I saw this in the store last week and will try it on when it goes on sale. It’s very cute in person.

I love the top, but then again I love anything from JCrew. They are all about ruffles this fall so you can definitely load up on blouses and tops with all sorts of ruffly embellishments. When I looked at the JCrew Fall catalog yesterday I knew why I didn’t get much at NAS.

This is such a beautiful top, and it looks perfect for layering.

I have the same question as Georgia – would it work on busty girls with the ruffle front?

I would like to add it to my list of items to look out for when I get to Boston at the end of August. What is the stock turnover like at JCrew? Is it fast or do they restock popular items?

love it. perhaps i’ll pop in there to check it out today–if only to take advantage of their air conditioning. ;-)

I have a similar version from this spring, with horizontal ruffles, in slate grey. I reach for it all the time! Mine also ran big — the XS is quite loose, and that’s one of the things I like best about it.

I noticed this tank when you did the sleeveless-under-vest post the other day and loved it! I’m super cheap though, so I’ll be waiting to see if it goes under $20. $10 would be more preferable. LOL. Plus I’d like one in 5 of the colors, and $35 x 5 is WAY too much money!

Stuff like this at JCrew tends to go quicker, unfortunately. But you never know.
I love this look (and another dress in the same catalog) but my only concern with JCrew knits is how much they stretch. My first graphic tee from JCrew was a M and I spent $50 for it. Within two wears it was stretched to an XL easily, and never shrunk back down even with washes. So after that I bought XS graphic tees that have all stretched to a M. So I’m just curious if you’ve noticed much stretch, Angie? Is the knit top cut on the biase?
It is quite pretty for sure.

This is the stuff from Jcrew that makes me love it so much(and their winter blazers which are amazing).I can usually only afford them on sale and the risk is them selling out.
I have a similar style top in a woven cotton from BR a few years ago and I LOVE it–it does dress up very easily or dress down to a smart casual. The neckline on this Jcrew one is a bit high for me but I’ll give it a shot :-)

Love it! Ruffles, pleats, gathers … these feminine details are right up my alley. I prefer a top like this to a plain tee shirt … it makes anything you thrown on just a little bit more special.

Very fun tank! I am loving ruffle detail lately. GAP is showing a lot of it in the pre-Fall new items as well.

That green colour is divine. No fair :(

It’s our very atypical 40 degree weather (105 in Farenheit) that encouraged this post!

Good question, Sarah. J.Crew’s goods have dipped in quality for sure, ever since their prices came down three of four years ago. On top of that, I’m always weary of knits anyway. But this top has held up really well so far. I think because it’s in a better-end fabrication (combed cotton slub yarn), AND because of the woven detailing (woven fabrics are more stable than knits). That being said, I don’t know what this top will look like in two years. Knits are generally dicey. Yet a woven blouse looks good for years and years.

Laura, this top *is* loose. But very fab. It’s just what we need in the heat. The fact that it’s sleeveless makes it even more feminine imo.

Busty gals, it goes without saying that you look best in scooped necklines and V’s. But this cru neck is quite wide at the neck which makes a difference. The ruffles are delicate and lay flat. I see no problem with that aspect of the styling at all. I’ve had this top on busty gals and they look great. In fact, they felt it was a nice change.

Charlotte, I have the grey and am thinking of getting another grey, the white or the green.

Debbie, get the green! I think it will work just fine. Great for your Summer climate.

Melody, you are spot on. Ruffles like this offer dead simple textural interest to any outfit. It’s a win if you like ruffles.

Ele, we’ll send one over :-)

Oh lady, I’m so sorry you’ve been hit by the heat! You’ll look ravishing in this breezy top till it cools off, though. This many ruffles puts me right off, but I adore the look on others.

I like the top a lot, especially that delightful neckline. If I could, I’d snatch up the shadow one right away. It would also do double duty as a great layering piece during less treacherous times of the year.

Update: I just went to the U Village J Crew here in Seattle. They had only one of these tanks left. It was white and a tad too big for me.

They do have some things that are looking rather sharp for fall, however. I know you’re allergic to corduroy, but what do you think of their corduroy “matchstick” trousers for fall?

Posted on July 30th, 2009 at 11:09 am

You’re right, they’d be great for layering. The green one looks really lovely.

The Bay Area has been so cold (50s and 60s, with all-day fog) that I can’t imagine wearing a sleeveless top except under three or four layers of wool. I’m wearing an insulated [vest][waistcoat] inside my house right now!

I love it and am seriously considering it :) The only issue is which color to get : ivory, grey or pale lilac.

Tanya, get the pale lilac! :D I was just looking at all the new stuff at J. Crew coming out and realized that they have a LOT more color options that would suit you. Actually, not so many that would suit me. :( Oh well. I’d take advantage of it this fall/winter.

US weather patterns seem to be completely out of whack this Summer.

Hah, Marianna! Stacey London and I are on the same ruffle tank wavelength.

I’m glad you chimed in again, Meredith. Your experience poses as a good example. I wear a size or two smaller than you do and the smallest size in this style is very roomy on me too. In fact, it’s a voluminous top. I’m willing to bet that the style actually fits you the way it’s supposed to, but you’re not used to the silhouette. I say go for it. Bring it home and adjust your eyes to the look.

As for corduroy, the debate continues.

Grab it while you can! J. Crew has sold out of this top in most stores in the NW US.

Angie, question for you about sizing of this – I did find my normal size (size M) to run big and so have ordered the size S. I’m trying to wrap my head around the way this shirt is *supposed* to look – do you think it should look like an A-line? I do not have a thin frame and so things that look drapey and elegant on a thinner smaller chested person sometimes look sloppy on me. Anyone willing to post a picture of how this top fits them? That would be helpful. Thanks!

Angie,

Would this tee be too long on me (petite)? I have issues with some regular shirts just feeling too long.

Thanks!

great shirt though i don’t usually shop at jcrew. do you think it’s worth it to wait til a sale or will it likely be gone by then?

Posted on July 30th, 2009 at 9:05 pm

I should have gone to J.Crew yesterday, obviously. I was so hot, and it’s just too hot to have laundry going so I thought I’d treat myself to some new clothes, things that won’t be so awful in the heat, and I just couldn’t find anything. Last night I was laying in bed with the boyfriend and he looked over and goes “Where does she live? It’s hot there too?” and then I laughed a little and told him you live SO FAR AWAY! (We live in Edmonds)

That was rambling…It’s the heat. Stay cool!

These are great questions and I’ll try and answer them as best I can :

o Tanya should get the Lilac and Ana the green. They’ll match your eyes.

o Good to get the inside scoop from LE who works at J.Crew. Sounds like this tank is a hot item. It doesn’t sound like there will be much left at sale time.

o Agrace, this is not an A-line top. It’s tailored on the shoulders with good coverage under the arm. The side seams are cut straight down to the hip thereby causing volume around the mid riff. The style does not flare at the hem so it’s not A-line. The top shouldn’t look unpolished if it’s fitted at the shoulder and hip. I hope that helps.

o Lori, it’s hard to tell if this top will be too long for you. It is on the long side but that means you might be able to wear it as a tunic instead of a top. Also, you could have to hemmed.

o Mac, this top is long. Should work for you in a larger size.

I just bought one of these tops at Forever 21 in a white/ivory color. Almost wore it today but then changed my mind. I found two others in ivory and olive green last year at Target. Easy to dress up or down and good for many occasions.

I bought one and love it, but when you wash it the ruffles stick together (versus being splayed out as seen in the picture). Any thoughts on how to fix this?

I went ahead and bought one too in ivory, of course. I was a little concerned it wouldn’t be long enough to cover my belly, but it’s perfect. The stretchiness factor is a plus in this case. It’s everything Angie has said and more. The cut of the sleeveless shoulder is particularly wonderful.
