Summer headgear: the straw fedora

June 10th, 2009

A cool Summer hat is a great way to add a little attitude to your style. Casual, breezy, lightweight and super practical. It’s the perfect way to keep the sun off your face and the hair in place.

The straw fedora is particularly popular this season and I like it too. It’s edgier and more androgynous than the conventional floppy straw hat, which makes for a nice change. It looks sassy paired with just about any relaxed look, both in beach and city settings.

I don’t wear hats unless it’s bitterly cold and a necessity. And although I’ve seen gals with uber short crops pull off headgear with style, I like hats best on lasses with longer hair. It’s almost necessary for hair to peek through from underneath the hat to do the look justice. Either way, a hat is a fab idea if you’re looking for a fun and functional Summer accessory that won’t break the bank.

Beige toned straw fedoras are the obvious colour choice, but consider other shades too. Black, grey, cream and white make nice alternatives. Check out forum member Loulou who has her Summer hat look down.

I actually love this style hat on me. I only need hats for keeping sun out of my face usually though.

I think this style is so fun AND sophisticated.

Thanks for the suggestion Angie!

Oh, I love hats. I used to look great in them when I was younger, but for some reason that’s changed. I’m not sure if my face has changed as I’ve gotten older, or if it’s because I wear much “louder” specs than I used to, but they don’t work so well on me anymore. I used to have a black wool fedora, and I wore it all the time during my first year of university.

I do wish more people would wear hats these days. They can be funky, ladylike, androgynous, and can really punctuate an outfit. I think a lot of people feel silly in them, though- as if they’re in costume. Too bad, it’s such a fab look!

can’t say that I care for the look. I prefer a bit more feminine look myself.

I’m not really a hat person, but I like them on others. Loulou looks great in them!

Sarah, you look fabulous in hats just like Loulou. You’ve both got the right hair!

Debbie, go for it. Bet you’d rock the look too.

Ele, I find hats uncomfortable because of my specs actually. But I do love the look on others. Arty and fun.

You read my mind, Angie. A summer fedora is on my list. I’m totally a hat person. I wear them all the time. And I’m hoping to pull one off with my shorter hair. Challenge on!

I’m sold. Now to decide which one…

Alecia, you look fab in hats! You have just enough hair. Even though it’s short, it’s bobbed and the bits that peek through are adorable.

I like wearing hats when it is sunny out or very cold. I have a floppy straw hat and a couple of wool berets, but don’t know if a fedora would suit me. If I come across one I will definitely try it on.

I love hats, however they don’t look good on me with short hair. I tried many times, and it just looks wrong, not to mention the hat-hair once I take the hat off. Perhaps I have not come across the right hat. So the only head gear I sport are berets in the winter.

So cute! I don’t look good in hats but will live vicariously through others’ stylish headgear. This is a really fun new style.

The only way hats look good with my curls is if I’ve pulled my hair back into a ponytail or low chignon. I’d love to find a good straw hat though. Just as I enjoy winter more when properly and warmly dressed, I think I enjoy bright sun more when I’m not squinting.

They are very cute, but I do not wear hats in the summer at all. That is probably because I try to stay away from he sun as much as possible. But I can imagine them making quite a statemant on the right girl.

Target has some cute affordable straw fedoras! I considered them when I went to pick up a new hat for the beach. Ended up going home with a cowboy hat … it just feels more casualy & beachy than a fedora. I also have a couple of bucket hats that get some wear in the summer. I think a fedora would be cute too, but don’t think I would wear it enough to justify the purchase. My hair is similar to the girls pictured in the fedoras.

The hats look good on you Loulou. You’re very lucky as so many of us are just frusterated hat wearers.
There is nothing more fun than going into a great hat shop. When I was in Victoria BC 5 years ago there was an outragious hat store with everything from winter caps to very theatrical velvet and satin, with feathers. We had so much fun just looking around in there. I think it would be a blast to join a group who make these things. Anyone in the Puget sound area know of a group who does this?

I look far too boyish in this style, but love my big floppy straw sunhat!

I love the look of a fedora, but I’m still trying to find one that I really like.

Love, love hats! Loulou has got it going on! Almost anyone can wear a hat, it just takes patience to find the right shape for your face – kinda like specs – and a hat is perfect for those “bad hair days”!

The boyfriend and I went hunting for fedora hats yesterday. They are being peddled here by little boys on the streets. Sadly, we never found them. So I’m still fedora-less today.

I saw fedoras everywhere the other day when I went shopping, but most of them were not made of straw. Not that I specifically have a straw one on my list. I do love hats though, and might consider adding a fedora to the collection.

I love these fedoras, not so much on me, but on the right person w/ the right style they are adorable.

Amazing-I bought a straw Panama Jack hat recently that is a cross between a fedora and a Western look. A bit bigger brim than a fedora, but not quite as big as traditional Western cowboy hats. I love it! I want to replace the band with something else.

I like how hair can soften the look of a hat and make it a more feminine look. However, I find hats to be fussy because I am left with hat hair. I don’t know how to combat it unless I keep the hat on all day, because otherwise my hair is flat on top and voluminous on the bottom. Ick!

Problem with the Fedora as a summer hat is that the brim is not really wide enough to offer good protection from the sun, and often with a straw version the weave is not dense enough so too much sun is let through.

This gives people the feeling that they’re protected, but in fact are not.

It’s a better winter than summer hat.

Definitely agree about the hair thing. As you (and others) had observed, I was definitely a hat person when I had long hair, but not I’m not sure I pull the look off as well now. My floppy winter hat definitely didn’t look as good. For summer, I was thinking of trying something more along the lines of a straw cloche, which, combined with my bob, would hopefully make for a sweet 1920’s look. As usual though, I have a hard time with more “structured” hats. They are usually too big. This is why I stick to floppier, unstructured hats.

I am a milliner and agree hats can look super. Some suggestions for the forum members. Its all about fit. Factory hats come in one size, so before you reject the look make sure you have a good fit. Measure your head around above your ears. Typically factory hats are sized at 22inches. A better made hat is also blocked to fit an oval shaped head. Factory made hats are blocked round. Short hair can wear a hat as long as there are sideburns and hair in the nape showing. Putting the money into a better quality hat will pay off in the long run. Hand made hats have the trims sewn on, making it easier to change them. Cheaper hats glue them on. I am trying to convince the forum members to keep wearing hats but be better consumers.. It will pay off in the long run and keep us looking fab.

Interesting! I just bought a big floppy straw hat at Zellers. I’m not sure how I feel about it with my short hair but I do need it for the beach, if nothing else. If I see a fedora I’ll try it on, just out of curiousity!

Posted on June 10th, 2009 at 3:03 pm

Great! I’m glad that there are takers for the fab fedora look.

Adrienne, thanks for chiming in. Your expert suggestions are much appreciated.

Imogen, you’re absolutely right about the brim of a fedora being shallow which is why this might not work in an Australian Summer unless you’re in the shade. This is a great hat for a Western and Northern European or American Summer, where the sun is less harsh and certainly not as sunny if that makes sense. In Winter in this neck of the woods, we need very warm woolly hats. Nothing straw will work unless you live in Florida or Hawaii.

I think the fedoras are adorable, but not really my style. I picked up one of Urban Outfitters’ straw cloche hats a couple weeks ago & have been wearing it outside on sunny days. I’m still experimenting with how to wear it so that it doesn’t look too fussy or costume-like. I’ve received a lot of compliments on it, but I haven’t seen *anyone* else wearing hats so far.

I like the fedoras. I love hats, and admire them on almost anyone, but like Angie said, with my own super shorty hair, I myself just look awkward and not so good in them. I’ll be seeking other sources of shade for my face this summer!

Question about straw fedoras!

I have one, bought it last spring from UO. It’s adorable, but it came a little smooshed (and to me, fedoras are partly about their sleek, smooth lines) and I can’t figure out how to unwrinkle it. Any suggestions/recommendations?
