I usually like the Gap for socks, but this season the roll top boot sock from Hue is my favourite. I look for fairly thin, wool-free socks that stay up the whole day and these socks pretty much fit the bill. I like to wear them with oxfords, boots and Converse. I also wear them over hose when wearing boots with skirts for extra snuggly comfort.
The pairs that I purchased are not available online, but the Hue tweed roll top socks shown below are close enough. Mine are black with a grey tipped roll top and described as the “jeans sock”. They are also available in grey, brown and burgundy. Nordstrom is offering them at a discount right now. The original price of 3 for $15 is down to $11. A fab deal, so I stocked up.
Remember to give your sock wardrobe some attention (it’s easy to neglect inexpensive basics like these). Socks make fabulous stocking stuffers even though the gift has become clichéd.

Sock preferences vary. Some like them thick, long and woolly; others prefer them thin, short and cotton-rich. What’s your sock preference and why?

Great timing for this post. I can actually see through my socks right now! It seems my whole family needs socks weekly.

I’m a big sock fan. I am a firm beleiver in the right sock for the right occassion. WHich is why my sock draw overfloweth. Nothing drives me battier than a pair of socks that just wont stay up.
I like thin no show socks for exercising. Less chance of rubbing inside my athletic shoe.
I like medium thickness soft fluffy socks for boots and fashion sneakers.
I like trouser socks for shoes.

I have a slight foot deformity, while it’s not noticeable from the outside at all, it affects my gait.
My gait means that heavy, thick male athletic socks last two wearings and are then completely destroyed with holes. Thin dress socks I wear only once before they have to be thrown away. What am I to do?

i desperately need sock suggestions — something not sheer but still thin and warm enough to wear with t-straps or mary janes. i just realized that outside of a pair of boots and a pair of wellingtons, all my shoes reveal some of my foot, makes socks urgent. everything i buy seems too sheer/tears easily or is too thick/sporty/masculine.

How funny. I bought about 10 pairs of these very socks last winter because I just ADORE them!

I have not tried these yet, but they sound intriguing.
Similar to Nicole, I like to have an assortment of different types of socks:
For fall/winter, I like thick fluffy blends with at least some cashmere, very warm. A have just gotten 8 new pairs a few weeks ago, since the old ones were in bad shape. I also have a couple of pair of knee highs from the same material, they work great over skinnies when tucking them into boots.
For normal shoes, I like thin trouser socks in neutral colors.
For spring and any sneakers, I like thinner socks made of cotton blend, such as these BR ones:

In any case, I really love argyle designs on my socks.
Finally, not technically socks, but for summer I have a big assortment of footies/peds to wear with my ballet flats.

I also don’t like wool socks (itchy!). I like medium weight to thin cotton ones to wear with boots or sneakers. I can’t wear the very thick men’s athletic ones because they would make my shoes fit too tight. But my sock drawer needs a thorough overhaul. I’ve got socks in there that are faded, threadbare, have holes, or that are missing a partner.

I think socks are a great stocking stuffer. I usually get my husband a few pairs so we can go through his sock drawer and get rid of the ones with holes. He’d never do it otherwise.
I don’t have a brand of socks that I prefer but I like thinner trouser sock styles. I also LOVE pattern on socks. I think it’s a great place to add a touch of sophisticated whimsy. I don’t mean that I run around with Santa’s on my socks but patterns that add texture like argyle or herringbone.
I also like to layer tights and socks with skirts.

good suggestion-I’ll have to try them out!

Tanya-referring to the footies or peds that you wear with flats, have you found ones that cover the whole bottom of the foot, but cut off low enough on the sides so that they do not show at the top of the flat?

My Southern California days have left me wanting to remain sockless. With the exception of when I have riding boots on, then I go for a thin, tall sporting sock. Yes, even my tennis shoes are generally worn without socks. Need to break the habit so I don’t freeze in the Pacific Northwest.

My sock drawer is pretty sad. I generally prefer trouser socks for just about everything that I wear socks with i.e. boots and tennis shoes. I’ve tried those little short, thick athletic socks to wear with tennis shoes for working out, but they somehow give me blisters. During the summer I live in ballet flats, sandals, and canvas skimmers, all with no socks. During the winter, I alternate between my 3 pairs of boots (two pairs of ankle boots, one brown and one black, and one black knee-high pair) with socks and/or hose under them. Occasionally I’ll pull out my regular heels, but the high for the day has to be in the 50s at least, which isn’t happening much this time of year. The reason I say I have a sad sock drawer is that most of my socks are white and really old. Few have holes, but most have lost their elasticity and don’t stay up well. I tried footies for a while with ballet flats, but they put a lot of pressure on my heel where the top of the footy had elastic or something to hold it up, so I gave up on those. I love Hue tights and have just discovered them this winter. I have one pair in black and another in a funky black and grey pattern. As soon as I have some spare cash, I’m getting another black pair and some in a bright color.

I got some nice socks from The Gap recently. I love wearing socks in bright colors and stripes with my ankle boots. No one else can see them, but I have fun wearing them.

I have a fetish for argyle socks. I have all sorts of socks though. . .way too many, recently did a clean-up actually. It really depends on the purpose. I wear hose-like socks with dress pants; thick, snuggly socks with pjs or cords; knee socks with dresses or skirts AROUND THE HOUSE ONLY!!
; recently got several pairs of bamboo socks which are nice and thin and comfy, and wear those with just regular slacks.

Especially in the winter my feet get so cold that I need lots and lots of socks, especially thinner wool ones. To keep my feet warm I need to change socks 2 or 3 times a day.

I LOVE woolly comfy socks… anywhere I am.

Violet, that’s a cute idea.
Sal, glad you feel these are great too. I bought 6 pairs and am thrilled. My feet are happiest in shoes and boots when I can wear comfy socks. Socks are VERY important and an area of our wardrobe that deserves attention.
Linda, We HAVE to get you into the swing of wearing socks!!!
Sarah, I’m sorry to hear that white athletic socks give you blisters. I hope you replace your sad socks soon. Keeping our feet happy is SO important.
Athena, what are bamboo socks? Joy, it’s interesting that you need to change your socks a few times a day. Why is that?
Megan, post your question on the forum and we’ll help you out.

Angie, my diabetic feet get soooo cold. I friend whose husband is diabetic was advised to change socks. He always carries extras in the car and to work. I tried it when my feet were cold and it really helps warm them up again. I’m amazed at how damp my socks become. This is probably too much information but it maybe it will help someone else like it helped me.

I am always on the hunt for the perfect, thin, mostly soft wool, sock. Marshall Field’s carried some from Ralph Lauren several years ago that I just loved. I affectionately called them my grandpa socks. They stopped making them and, of course, mine are getting very thin even though I have at least 20 pair. I love wearing them over my tights inside my knee-high boots. Protects my tights from getting worn out at the toes from rubbing on the boots.
Why the no-wool? I am seriously looking for socks to replace these wonderful socks. If anyone has a suggestion, please drop me a line!
I love this blog Angie! Where is the forum?

Oh wait! I think I found the forum!

Thanks for the info, Joy. That’s interesting and I’m always happy to hear about happy feet. Perhaps you’ve helped someone else solve their cold feet problem.
Deborah, I’m allergic to wool which is why I do not prefer it directly on my skin. I get itchy and uncomfortable, and my eczema flairs up. (Glad you found the forum).

For wool fans – smartwool! Cute, comfy and they don’t stay wet if your feet sweat a lot, so your feet stay warmer.
