Gaudy Gladiators

May 28th, 2008

Gladiator thong sandals are all over Paris right now. Although I can’t wear them myself, I love the look of a pretty metallic sandal with dainty straps. Add a polished pedicure and you are set for just about any Summer outfit. But the gladiator sandals below are over the top. Fine for designer cat walk appeal and Russell Crowe in “the Gladiator” (without the heels), but a little silly for every day. I’m all for adding an edge to an ensemble, but not like this. A gladiator thong sandal has got to be pretty.

These are absolutely ugly! However, I do like much simpler styles.

This is one fad that will not be in my wardrobe this season. While I can see the appeal for the serious fashionista, this fashion was around last season and is now mainstream. Won’t be around next season so I cannot see the need to invest.

The first two, yucky! However, the last one really caughty my eye, and I think I like it. I would have to see how it looked on my foot.

All of these look like I’d see them over leggings or similar tight/layering garmets in the Haight [SF] or at a Ren Faire-type gathering. They’re so bulky they don’t seem like spring/summer footwear at all. Or maybe it’s just me.

ha ha! These amuse me. They’re silly, odd looking, and DEFINATELY remind me of Russle Crowe’s footwear in “the gladiator”.
forgive me if I pass on this trend. =D

Any tips for people like me that don’t have the most prettiest toes but still wants to wear sandals.

I like Gladiator sandals in general but these over the top styles are for over the top type people. I’d find it very interesting (and slightly scary) to see someone wearing these. It takes all kinds to make the world interesting.

These might look interesting on other people but I’m just not into the S & M look myself, so I’ll pass on these!

Forgettable – e’ll be seeing these on the sale racks soon. Maybe for a great Ben Hur halloween costume?

I just spent several days in L.A., where I saw quite a few gladiatoresses. Often–too often, alas–the sandals were accompanied by extremely short shorts. The only word to describe this look: hoochie.

Don’t like the first two, but I actually very much like the last pair. Wouldn’t wear them myself (no such heels for me) but I can see them looking quite fab!

Victoria’s Secret has some even uglier/gaudier ones–if you can believe it. The gladiator style has been around for at least the past 3 summers. It can go away any time as far as I’m concerned. Yucky.

I don’t like those either. Not only are they ugly, I bet they’d give you HORRID blisters! Ouch!

I bought the trend two years ago at Target. The sandals have a kind of metal type chain mail across the foot which I like a lot but have not worn in public much. It’s scary because people hate them but I have great feet and sandals are my thing. I even took a picture of my feet in them on my camera phone and would never erase it because it is so good. I think the key to the gladiator is simple straps and details, though I do think they are probably wrong for most people…. especially suburbanites!! ha ha jk.

I love the first one! It’s over-the-top and great. Would be perfect come Carnival time. : ) Can’t stand the latter two.

I saw someone wearing the first pair of gladiator sandals above a couple of years ago in NYC! Can’t say I would wear any of the ones above. A simpler version might be interesting though.
