Trend: Mermaidcore

Mermaidcore is a micro or fringe trend that probably took some inspiration from the new movie, The Little Mermaid. The trend is well suited to high Summer because of its beachy themes, water vibes, and under-the-sea aesthetic. The palette of the trend covers all sorts of pastel, mid-tone, and bright blues, greens, pinks and purples. There are plenty of neutral metallics, whites, sandy creams, and beiges. There’s a bit of peach, citrus, teal and black too.

Body-con and fitted mermaid dress and skirt silhouettes, and fishtail hems are undoubtedly a big part of the trend. So are all sorts of crochet, sequin, shimmery, iridescent, rope, raffia, fringe, beading, and pleated items. Also ruffles, tulle, bikini top bodices, boob tubes, strapless styles, halter necks, liquid satin, sheer chiffons, and all sorts of mesh fabrics. Swirly patterns that remind you of water, and seaside patterns and accessories of fish, dolphins, seaweed, starfish, shells, oysters, anemones, mermaid tails, and coral are there too. Items like sarong skirts, sarong pants, glittery denim, slip skirts, slip dresses, and trumpet skirts are a nod to the fringe trend. Pearls are the gem of choice, and beachy waves in your hair is another part of the look.

To interpret the trend literally might not be your cup of tea, because the silhouettes can be tight, skimpy, sheer, and revealing. But remember that sheer fabrics, and open-weave crochet and mesh tops and skirts can be layered to create interesting effects. Vests can be layered over tees, blouses, and shirts. Slip dresses can be worn over tight tops or under jackets. And beach wear can be saved for beach, pool and resort wear settings.

Or alternatively, like me, you can focus on parts of the colour palette and wear it in ANY silhouette and pattern that tickles your fancy. Wear seaside jewellery like pearls, coral, shell necklaces, and beachy waves in your hair your way.

J. Crew and Elie Tahari did a marvelous job of interpreting Mermaidcore in a more relatable, casual, smart casual, and less revealing way. Here are some examples in the dead right palette.

In the first, a sequined vest is worn as a top over a liquid satin skirt. It’s completed with white wedge slides and a rope tote. A white bag to match the shoes would be fab too.

In the second example a crochet shell top is accompanied by a shell necklace and starfish bracelet. You can wear the combination with shorts, jeans, chinos, utility pants, or skirts.

Finally, a shiny ombré blazer is worn with a matching blouse to create a delicious twinset effect. It graces slim wide cropped jeans, and is completed with silver sandals and a shiny belt.

Spotlight: BLANKNYC Jackets

BLANKNYC is a Manhattan-born casual brand with an urban attitude. It offers a range of tops, bottoms and toppers across regular sizes, and sometimes plus sizes. Their jackets, and particularly their faux leather and faux suede jackets are particularly good and on the more affordable side. Items go for a song at sale time.

Here are examples of their jackets.

Over the years, my clients have greatly enjoyed their BLANKNYC jackets, which have worked well on petites. Unfortunately, I’ve found sizing a bit inconsistent. Sometimes small, sometimes true to size, and sometimes large, depending on the silhouette.

I unexpectedly fell in love with a faux leather BLANKNYC moto jacket in an unusual peachy-toffee colour at last year’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. It has unique gold hardware, which is not the norm for motos, and is my choice of metal. It’s extremely well made, super soft, and the best faux leather quality I’ve seen. The appearance is polished and crisp. It was $49 and became a wardrobe workhorse.

Wildly impressed with my earthy moto, I filled a wardrobe hole with a boxy bone faux leather jacket by the same brand almost a year later. It’s the Short Story Jacket, which has a fun ‘60s and ‘80s vibe. It’s as well made, super soft, a great architectural fit, and versatile for my style. Despite our warm and hot, Summer weather, I’ve worn it a few times on chilly mornings, evenings and a few June-uary days.

I’ve packed the toffee jacket for a trip, and worn it for air travel. It’s very comfy and hasn’t creased, which is VERY important for faux leather because you can’t press it. If the aesthetic appeals to you, keep the BLANKNYC brand on your radar.

Outfit Formula: Summer Black

As long as the fabrics are Summer weight, and the silhouettes are breezy, wearing black in the Summer can work well. I have a range of clients who enjoy doing just that. Wear dressy and casual black Summer outfits. Wear patterns with black backgrounds. Add black components to outfits. Or stick to black shoes, bags, and accessories.

Here are some outfit ideas to get you started.

1. Patterned Dress and Black Blazer

Combine a patterned dress with a lightweight and loose black blazer in cotton, rayon, silk or linen. Make sure that there is black in the pattern so that the items relate to one another. The blazer will feel more Summery and casual if it’s unlined. Wear it open, and scrunch the sleeves. Here, the mustard shoes match the yellow in the dress. The black bag matches the rest, and the model’s hair.

2. Dress Over Black Pants

Combine a black patterned dress over black wide leg trousers. Black in the pattern of the dress will help it match the bottoms. A tailored top portion of the dress adds structure to the outfit. The flared bottom portion of the dress allows it to move with the swoosh of the pants. If the dress buttons in front, unbutton the skirt portion so that the pants peek through. Add black shoes that work with the outfit, and a bag to match. A pink bag could work well here.

3. Summer Dresses, Skirts, and Jumpsuits

A summery dress or jumpsuit can work well in black, especially when it shows some skin. A two-piece dress or jumpsuit is another way to go. So is a subtle black pattern, crochet, and lace. Footwear can range from booties, sneakers and loafers, to sandals and slides. Most of it is black as a nod to ‘90s trends. Feel free to wear white, metallic, pastel, or bright shoes instead.

4. Black Top and Cargo Pants

Combine a pair of earthy cargo or parachute pants with a black top and black shoes. Finish off the look with a bag to match. Here, a black puffy, voluminous and ruffled blouse adds a pretty and dramatic touch to toffee cargo pants. Dressier black toe-loop sandals are the choice of shoe. I see a black or earth-toned bag.

5. White Pants and Black Support Act

Last, combine white pants or jeans with a black top, or black and white patterned top. Finish off the look with black sandals and a fun tote. Here, a pair of white pants is paired with a black and white tunic. Lug-soled sandals add a trendy edge. The colour-blocked tote adds a geometric touch and spot of colour. Love how the white in the outfit complements the silver grey hair of the model. Add jewellery, eyewear, and watch as desired.

Team Match or Team Mismatch

Today we’re discussing your preference for matching shoes and handbag. You are on Team Match if you tend to match the colour of your shoes and bag. You are on Team Mismatch if you don’t, or if it doesn’t matter.

I have light neutral, pastel, sour bright, gold, and burgundy handbags, that I switch out regularly and throughout the year. I have the footwear to match my colourful bags in the warmer months, so I tend to match more in the Spring and Summer. I enjoy the polished, pulled together, and “matchy-matchy” effect of matching the colour of shoes with bags.

Here are my matching shoe and bag sets. Note that the product photos don’t always have accurate colours, but these are all well-matching combinations.

That said, my Autumn and Winter footwear is white, cream, blush, taupe and burgundy, which I match with a bag in the same colour some of the time. But I happily mismatch the pairing by continuing to wear my bright and pastel bags with neutral shoes. I can’t pick a side, so I’m benched.

Over to you. Do you bat for Team Match or Team Mismatch. Tell us why, and no batting for both teams. If you can’t pick a side, join me on the bench where I’m serving caramelized coconut tofu curry with quinoa, brown rice, green beans, carrots, and a crunchy and sweet kale salad. Eaton mess with extra chewy French meringue for dessert.

Aging Is the Evidence of Life’s Miraculous Journey

Aging well is more about a positive state of mind than your physical appearance. Think holistically about aging. Don’t be overly critical. Recognize that style is about verve, confidence, happiness and grace. Find peace in your heart.

Style is Not an Age

Aging well is a journey of introspection and self-acceptance. The aging process might take your body further away from society’s benchmarks for beauty, but these changes are the evidence of an interesting and memorable life.

Aging is a privilege. With it comes wisdom, reflection, self-awareness, and confidence. Be more daring with your clothing, footwear, accessories and hairstyle. Enjoy your style, both process and results. Be a role model for younger generations.
