Mom on the Go Ensemble: Cardigan, Jeans & Booties

Combining jeans with a long sleeved T-shirt, tunic cardigan, booties and crossbody bag is a winning Fall outfit formula for my Mum on the Go clients because it’s casual, practical and comfortable. Some add a belt, eyewear, scarf and headgear for extra pizzazz, but these bells and whistles are not essential. Keeping the look simple is just as fab.

It is, however, important to update the components of the outfit formula so that the combination looks fashionable and feels fresh. In this case the most important fashion pieces to get right are the cardigan, bag and booties. The tee and scarf can be classic. The haute baseball cap is the fashion forward cherry on top.

I’ve created three neutral renditions to get the ball rolling, each with a different vibe. An earthy and rich version on the left, a graphic look in the middle, and a hard-edged version on the right.

Here are the components:

Long Cardigan: Make sure the style is current. You’re after a tunic length in a fluid or oversized fit. The volume of the silhouette can be created by round arty flounces that drape like a waterfall. Or by straighter lines that fall away from the body thereby creating a more angular drape. Cocoon shapes that taper at the hem are excellent, as are swing or trapeze styles. The toffee style here is extra long, angular and masculine. The grey is cocoon shaped. And the black is a little more flouncy and swingy.

Layering Piece: A tailored or slouchy tee is ideal. A button-down shirt or knitted top is another way to go. Or even a lightweight pullover for added insulation. Leave the layering piece untucked, or partially tuck the front and add a belt.

Jeans: Choose relaxed skinnies, skinnies, boyfriend jeans or straight leg jeans. Blue, black and grey jeans are the most practical for Mums on the go. White jeans can work for gals on the go who don’t have dear little dirty hands to deal with when out and about with kids. Leave the hems rolled or unrolled.

Booties: Wear current casual booties to amp up the fashionable integrity of the outfit. Flat or heeled is fab. Go with a slightly pointier toe, almond toe, or longer round toe. Combine an all black rendition with non-black booties. I’ve chosen simple styles that are fairly refined, but chunkier, more ornate, and tougher styles will work well too.

Accessories: Belts, eyewear, watch, headgear, jewellery and scarves are optional. Scarves add outfit interest, and hats are always eye-catching. I vote the Sporty Luxe haute baseball cap in tweed, wool or leather for the most trendy look. But beanies, newsboys and wool fedoras are fun too. Bags need to be extra practical for Mums on the go, so think crossbody, shoulder bag or upscale backpack.

Build an entire MOTG Fall Capsule around this outfit formula, and wear a daily “uniform” if you want to keep your look super simple and easy to manage. Make sure you have a fabulous assortment of jeans, current cardigans, layering tees, and booties across the colours that tickle your fancy. Change up the look with scarves, hats and bags, and Bob’s your uncle. Top the lot off with a roomy coat for colder temperatures.

New: Live Prices in YLF Finds

We launched Finds just over 5 months ago and since then YLF members have been collecting up a storm. We have expanded support to more than 100 stores, and more than ten thousand unique products have been collected. We have added features that allow you to recommend finds, organize them using folders, and create collections of finds, like ensembles and capsules.

Today we’re adding another feature and we call it “live prices”. Over the last couple of months I’ve been working on connecting the products you collect to retailer databases in order to provide updated pricing for all the items. To start with we are connected to six of the most popular retailers, Nordstrom, J.Crew, Zappos, Shopbop, Banana Republic and Anthropologie, and we will be adding more over time. The order that we connect retailers will be based on their popularity in your Finds collections.

You can see the live prices in action on the screen clipping of Angie’s finds below this paragraph. First, you can see that the Burberry Brit coat on the left is currently marked down because there is a yellow sale sticker on the item. Second, I was hovering over the Smythe jacket on the right when I made the clipping and you can see that the price is visible under the name of the item (if you are using a phone or tablet you can tap the info icon and the price will also be available in the pop-up.)

Live Prices Example

The Finds features are available to any YLF member. If you aren’t yet a member, you can sign up and start collecting within minutes. If you would like to read more about the Finds feature and how it works, here is a help page to get you started.

That’s it for now, but there’s more in the pipeline. Aside from adding support for more retailers, we will be enabling optional email updates so you can receive notifications when the prices drop on items in your wardrobe.

Please let us know if you see anything strange with this new feature. Start a thread in the technical support forum category, or send me a private message.

Weekly Roundup: Casual Items

One of the best aspects of today’s fashion is that we can remix casual pieces with dressier items to create all sorts of fashionable juxtapositions. So both casual (and dressy) wear has become a lot more versatile and cost-effective than it was five years ago.

  • Madewell Flannel Oversized Boyshirt in Bainbridge Plaid: A classic and cozy plaid shirt that's great semi-tucked into boyfriend jeans with a belt and a pair of booties. Runs small.
  • American Eagle AEO Factory Plaid Button Shirt: I just bought a darling very similar to this plaid shirt from American Eagle and love it to bits. It's extremely soft and drapes like a dream. Very casual and comfortable. Might run a little big.
  • L.L.Bean Scotch Plaid Shirt: I continue to be impressed with the quality from L.L Bean. Their flannel shirts are impeccably made, and for $40. They are better quality than most of the current designer plaid shirts for five times the price. Inge bought this one and looks like a million bucks. Runs large.
  • Old Navy Women's Plaid Flannel Shirts: A plaid in an unusual colour combination. Dark red, rust and lots of Winter white.
  • J.Crew Featherweight merino wool boyfriend turtleneck sweater: A brilliant stand-alone and layering piece for Team Turtleneck. Lightweight, non-itchy, and fashionably oversized. I will probably be getting this in ink blue and heathered bark.
  • Gap Merino turtleneck sweater: These fluid turtlenecks are excellent updated wardrobe essentials. Their fitted welt makes them more structured than the boyfriend silhouette from J.Crew, and the colours are versatile. I bought one in black and toffee.
  • Ann Taylor Textured Tee: A great little salt and pepper jumper to wear faux-tucked over flared jeans with a belt.
  • 1.State Digital Plaid Jacket: A fitted and lightweight plaid blazer for Team Burnt Orange.
  • Karen Millen Vintage wash skinny jean: Fashionable patched jeans that run small for Team Hard Edge.
  • Rag & Bone Rag & Bone Boyfriend Hammersmith Jean: I haven't seen these in person, but they look very interesting. Grey boyfriend jeans are hard to find, especially sans rips and tears. They could be a great piece for Fall and Winter.
  • 7 For All Mankind Raw Edge Pencil Skirt: A fancy casual denim pencil skirt with fun colour blocked piping.
  • Rag & Bone/JEAN 'Lira' Long Sleeve Top: A fashion forward hard edged piece with extra long sleeves and an oversized fit. Well made.
  • Seychelles Solitude: Brilliantly comfy and well-made pointy toe black Beatle booties. Versatile and on trend. Works well on high volume feet and wider ankles.
  • Luxury Rebel Dahlia Boot: Bring out your inner super hero with a rich red ankle boot with a higher shaft and brogue detailing. Great paired with cropped pants.
  • Gap Cargo jogger pants: You have to fit these on to feel their trendy Sporty Luxe magic. Match them with a semi-tucked pullover, slip-on sneakers, or booties. Add a blazer for structure. Super casual and fashionable.
  • Ann Taylor Cashmere Turtleneck Poncho: A comfy pull-on-and-go poncho that's fab over leather jeggings, or a pencil skirt with heels. Needs an oversized topper for extra insulation.
  • Club Monaco Cheyenne Sweater: A funnel neck shell top that's fun worn on its own or over a blouse or shirt.
  • J.Crew Pinstripe zip sweater: This sweater looks best layered over an untucked shirt or blouse with the zippers unzipped. Boxy fabness.
  • Zara Moleskin Blazer With Elbow Patches: A fitted sage green velvet blazer with elbow patches. Go Team '70s. Runs small.
  • Express Color Block Moto Jacket: A colour blocked moto with a Retro vibe. It's beautifully made and looks designer with bound inside seams. It's not supposed to be tailored so don't buy it too small. I keep on thinking about this piece because of its distinctive '80s flavour and tomato red trim. It might find a way into my wardrobe.
  • The Dre Skinny Boyfriend Jeans: Relaxed skinnies and streamlined boyfriend jeans are essentially the same item. These fit the bill and are winners with many clients. Curvy ladies may need to size up a size.
  • Zara Asymmetrical Sweater: A semi-fitted colour blocked pullover with flattering asymmetrical split hem. Great over upscale sweatpants, jeans, or tapered trousers.
  • Zara Short Padded Bomber Jacket: A quilted olive bomber with a jockey-esque vibe. Wear it unzipped and over a dress, skirt, jeans or pair of trousers.
  • Loft Windowpane Sweater: Inge bought this jumper and it's absolutely terrific layered over a white or ink shirt. Check out the cute back button detailing. No need to roll up the sleeves either. Fashionable and fun. Pair with fitted bootcuts or relaxed skinny jeans.

Remember to add structure to casual wear if the look feels too oversized and untailored. Structural outfit tweaks might mean semi-tucking the front of a top, rolling the cuffs of jeans, layering a fitted blazer over a boxy top, scrunching sleeves, adding a belt, or pairing the top with fitted bottoms.
