Outfit Formula: Summery Sets

Co-ords — matching pants, skirt and shorts sets — are having an on-trend moment. They were fringe last season and are mainstream this year. Most sets are patterned, but solids are also coming through. The vibe is a nod to late ‘90s fashion, and a practical one at that. It’s super easy to have separates ready to wear as a set. No fuss, and good to go with the addition of shoes and a bag.

I love wearing co-ords! Their matchy-matchy vibe is fun and dramatic to my eye, and a super simple way to look pulled together and feel comfortable in hot weather. They were my favourite ‘90s look that I’m milking again today. In breathable 100% cotton and linen, shirt and pants co-ords form part of my Summer uniform.

I have four pants sets for hot Summer weather. They keep me cool, covered, and are ideal for my style. I also have a skirt and top co-ord. It’s not as breezy and covered as the pants co-ords but a goodie I wore lots last Summer nonetheless.

1. Top and Skirt Co-ord

A long-sleeved patterned shirt has a matching flared maxi skirt and is worn as a set. Instead of buttoning up the shirt and wearing it tucked or untucked with the skirt, it’s layered over a white tee and knotted in front as a tie-top. The white tee breaks up the expanse of the pattern. As a further nod to ’90s fashion, the look is completed with flat black slides and earthy straw tote. I’d have preferred to see brown or white slides, although the black is dramatic.

2. Blouse and Pants Co-Ord

Here’s a dressier match of patterned blouse and pants, with the blouse worn fluidly over wide pants. Gold heeled sandals and clutch add a dressy touch, and further match the gold snakes in the pattern. A chuncky shell necklace adds a tropical and beachy integrity.

3. Tunic and Pants Co-Ord

Here’s a patterned tunic worn with matching full-length pants. The sleeveless silhouette and vibrant floral look particularly Summery. Dressy tan pumps and big turquoise earrings complete the look. I see a tan bag to match. Or alternatively, white shoes and bag.

4. Top and Shorts Co-Ord

Last, there’s a matching top and shorts set in patterns and solids that looks particularly casual, and feels super breezy. Shorts are beach and resort friendly. They can also be worn in very casual settings, or at home if that’s more your preference. Here’s a solid lime version with the shirt tied at the waist. Comfy slides and a beach bag complete the look.

Link Love: Food-for-Thought Fashion Reads

From stylish television being all the rage to the pressure to dress a certain way when working out, today I’m sharing three articles on different style-related topics that are worth a read:

Fab Links from Our Members

Here’s some fun Kentucky Derby hat fashion. Angie likes the creative horse-y ones.

Angie also reports that a ticket to the Met Gala costs $75,000. And celebrities who attend do not pay for their tickets! They do make generous donations though.

Nuancedream read that thanks to Zendaya and the Challengers film, tenniscore is having a moment

April is attending a niece’s wedding and will wear sneakers with her dress (code is cocktail). So this article was of interest to her.

Jaime discovered that Vogue has been doing fun summaries of different decades in fashion. Here is the ’20s and they have gotten up through the ’60s so far.

Je Ne Sais Pas liked Liza Belmonte’s post about clothing quality diminishing over time: “This issue has been often discussed here, so maybe not a lot of new information, but interesting nonetheless.”

Suntiger says: “Everyone check your 2024 bingo cards… Nirvana is considered preppy now. As is Lululemon…”

She also came across this article that claims ankle socks make you look old.

Suz thought that Trinny does a fantastic department store shop for inspiration. She takes us from Cos to Maje to Hobbs to Theory (and so much more!) trying on items and discussing their merits and demerits as she goes. She adds: “It’s a great education in how to shop, especially for those who easily feel overwhelmed in a department store. It’s almost as good as shopping with Angie in that she transmits the same rich fund of fashion knowledge together with a genuine love for clothes.”

Build Your Collection of Statement Pieces

Statement pieces are eye-catching items of clothing, shoes or accessories that reflect your personality. Often unique, but not necessarily big, bright, shiny, or voluminous. People notice them and begin to associate them with your signature style.

Spectacular Statements

Statement pieces create energy and interest. Some are wardrobe workhorses. Wearing them frequently creates an honest and memorable reflection of your style. If a statement piece is expensive then frequent use whittles down the cost-per-wear.

Style is about creating a positively reinforcing feedback loop between the way we feel and the way we look. It connects our inner thoughts and feelings to the story we tell the rest of the world. Statement pieces are like the headlines in this story.

Six Style Themes with Staying Power

Six important themes have become a persistent part of fashion and style. So much so that they are more of a frame of reference than themes or trends. Representing a new normal, they have staying power and are getting stronger over time.

1. Sustainability and Ethics

Sustainability is extremely complex, with no easy solutions, and many compromises. That said, most designers, retailers, and brands are producing more sustainably and ethically than they used to. Some more than others, but generally the industry has come a long way.

There’s also a lot we can do as individuals. Reflect on what sustainable and ethical fashion means for you and your style. Try to purchase from sustainable brands. Purchase items with longevity. Take care of wardrobe items so that they last. Repair and upcycle when you can. Shop your wardrobe first, instead of the store. Rent, swap, donate and resell. Recycle to prevent items going to the landfill.

Sustainability means different things for different people, and some can manage it more easily than others. It’s not a contest, so compare, but do not despair. If you’re making a point of being sustainable your way, you’re part of the solution.

2. Do Your Own Thing (DYOT)

Fashion these days is a melting pot of sartorial variety, and we are spoiled for choice. As a result, there is no one way to be stylish. Trends are no longer seasonal, and at some point they will be irrelevant. That’s why creating a signature style and personal stamp is one of the most important trends of all. Wear the trends, or don’t wear them. Remix them, repeat them, or reinvent them. It’s all good because you’re doing your own thing.

3. Practical Comfort

Our modern way of life demands practical comfort. Designers and retailers are finally understanding this important ingredient to style. That’s why it’s fashionable to wear sneakers with anything, and to throw on leggings or joggers with a blazer, dressy bag, and glam jewellery. Unstructured clothing, elastic waists, fabrics with stretch, fabrics that don’t crease, denim, crossbody bags, backpacks, dainty jewellery, cosy clothing, machine-washable workwear, clothing with hidden pockets, dressy flats, casual footwear, trendy puffer coats, easy layers, and the oh-so-popular juxtaposition of remixing casual with dressy pieces. These all make practical, comfortable statements in today’s fashion.

4. Celebrating Classics and Icons

Fashion repeats itself, and these days there is seldom anything that’s completely new. The newness lies in how items are combined rather than in the silhouettes themselves. Modern classics and iconic items continue to enjoy their fashionable moment season after season, which is comforting and refreshing. They are remixed in new ways to prevent boredom and showcase versatility, thereby promoting sustainability because wearing an old item in a new way can be better than buying something new.

5. Happy Tension

Today’s fashion is full of opposites that create tension in harmonious ways. Maximal outfits are as important and popular as minimal looks. Less is more, AND more is more. Oversized fits, slouch, surrendered waistlines, swooshy movement, and architectural volume live happily alongside structured looks, polished tailoring, body-con fits, and waist definition. Dressy pieces and casual items are equally on-trend, and work well juxtaposed in one outfit. Neutrals and earth tones are as popular as brights, pastels, and jewel tones. Pointy toes are as important as square toes, and stilettos are as on-trend as block and stacked heels. Flats are as fabulous as sky-scraping platforms. High necklines are as important as V-necks. Cropped pants are as on-trend as full lengths. Asymmetry shakes an uneven hand with symmetry. Dainty jewellery has its quiet, yet strong spot next to chunky statement pieces.

6. Personal Slogans

Designers and retailers continue to use their influential platforms to make statements that are important to them and their brand. Some of the messages are political, while others are light-hearted, funny, and take the mickey out of the ridiculous fashion industry. YLF is not a political blog, so the specifics of the messages are not the point. But the trend is something we can incorporate into our own styles by wearing slogans and outfit combinations that showcase a personal message. Subtle or bold, but worn with conviction.

Just about anything goes these days when you wear something with ease, intention and confidence. Themes like the six above make fashion and style more empowering, enjoyable, comfortable, manageable, and meaningful. Long may it last.

Outfit Formula: Crisp Blue and White

Personally, I love wearing all shades of white with all shades of blue in warm and hot weather, and it’s a go-to palette. Unlike the outfits here, I add brights like citron, shocking pink, lime green, orange, and tomato red shoes, belts, and bags to the look. But not all the time. I enjoy keeping the look neutral too.

Onto the outfits.

1. White Pants, Blue Top, Black Accents

Combine a pair of roomy white jeans or pants with a blue shirt or blouse. Button the shirt all the way to the top if you like. Tuck the top into the pants. Add black accents in the form of a belt, shoes, sunnies, and bag. Note how the length of the wide pants works well with the sandals. They are sufficiently short so that the hems don’t slide under your heels as you stride. Tucking the shirt lengthens the leg line from the hips upward. Gorgeous Trendy Classic look.

Conversely, sub the white pants for a straighter white skirt, and wear a blue top untucked with black shoes and bag.

2. Blue and White Patterned Dress

There is nothing as easy – at least, not for me! – as popping on a pretty dress with movement on a hot Summer’s day. Here’s a lovely fit ’n flare frock in a blue and white pattern that is fabulous on the model. It’s completed with dressier heeled cream slides, a straw bag, statement white earrings and dainty necklace.

3. Tunic and Cropped Skinnies

Here’s one for Team Skinnies. Combine a blue and white patterned tunic with cropped denim skinnies. Finish off the look with white shoes like these open-toe clogs. The white of the shoes effectively picks up the white in the pattern. Remember that too short dresses can be worn as tunics too.

4. Denim Shorts and a BIG white Shirt

Last, a classic. Combine a pair of denim shorts in a length that works for you, with an oversized white shirt. Semi-tuck the front of the shirt to showcase some waist, which adds structure to the outfit. Add a cognac belt and sandals to finish off the look. Add a bag that works with the palette, which can be neutral or non-neutral. Add jewellery, eyewear, and watch as desired.
