Nordstrom Roundup: Quality Pieces

Here’s a small selection of items that worked well on my clients last week. The quality of the pieces blew me away, and some of the styles are seasonal repeats. Luxurious fabrics with weight and substance. Excellent drape and ease of movement. Beautiful workmanship, fabulous hardware, and gorgeous fits.

Unfortunately, most of the items are pricey, which makes stalking them until they go on sale an option if they tickle your fancy. Fortunately, the items have a high longevity factor because they aren’t overly trendy. Modern Classic and Modern Retro silhouettes definitely have their place in fashion.

  • Lafayette 148 New York Lucina Leather Jacket: An unusual leather jacket that looks amazing on a curvier body type. You'll wear the neckline well if you look great in V-necks. Stunning colour if you enjoy wearing warm sour greens or earth tones. The elastic waist is a gorgeous tailoring feature. Architectural drape. Incredible statement piece.
  • Helene Berman Stripe Collarless Zip Front Jacket: The diagonal striped trim makes this jacket special. Excellent over sheath dresses, or with trendy cropped pants. Sharp and professional. Fab on curvy body types.
  • Lafayette 148 New York Pria Coat: Ultra elegant and slimming despite the horizontal stripes. More WOW in person. Very, very sharp. Works over trousers, jeans, dresses and skirts. Works well on apple, pear, rectangle and hourglass body types. Amazing statement piece.
  • Trina Trina Turk A-Line Rain Jacket: Modern Retro MOD Fabness. Looks more A-line and fun in person. I was WOWED by this piece, and the bone is hanging in my closet, although the tomato red is just as fab. Water-repellent, roomy fit, and pristine gold hardware. (Warning: you have to be on Team Gold to love the hardware - which is what drew me in right away). Very comfy and looks Casually Chic & Polished. Removable hood with side entry pockets are great. Sleeves are long - even on very long armed me. But can be easily shortened. Has worked on some petites with sleeve alteration.
  • BILLY T Embroidered Denim Jacket: A tailored and short denim jacket with embellishment is a nice update for Team Denim Jacket. Although the embellishment is trendy, the fit is modern classic which makes the look go the distance. Works on various body types. Soft and stretchy. The embroidery is stitched with care and precision.
  • 'Cayanne' Leather Peep Toe Sandal (Women): If you can manage the heel height, this is one of the most comfortable sandal booties of all time. Works best on a regular and high volume foot. All the colours are nice. Well worth the glowing reviews.
  • Classiques Entier Zip Pocket Ankle Pants: Best black dressy ankle pants I've seen all year. Amazing fit and substantial fabric. Works for a curvier and straighter figure. Fun side zipper detailing and dainty slits at the ankle.
  • Classiques Entier Leather Trim Flare Leg Pants: Gorgeous tailored bootcut trousers in heavy drapey fabric. Fits both a curvier and straighter body type. Streamlined. Very long seams.
  • Nordstrom Collection Bateau Neck Gingham Sweater: The fabric is thick and crisp. It moulds to the body but does not cling. Very flattering. The neckline works surprisingly well for a larger bust and shorter neck. It has side vents that are revealing so you have to wear a camisole to prevent skin exposure at the office. It's ink blue - not black.
  • Nordstrom Collection Check Funnel Neck Swing Jacket: A boxy Modern Retro jacket that's super fun. Runs big and is best on those who can fill out the silhouette. It's ink blue - not black.
  • Theory 'Tolleree' Short Sleeve Cashmere Pullover: An amazingly simple stand-alone piece or layering item that hugs the body in a delicate and tailored way. You'll have to fit it on to feel the magic. Scrumptious cashmere. It's best on a long neck, smaller bust, and narrow arms. Not suited to apple shaped body types or very broad shoulders. I bought two of these last year - in black and bone - and they are wardrobe essentials and work horses. You know you're wearing quality when you put these on. I have my eye on the navy.
  • Theory Meenara Knit Tank: A fun fringed piece in a heavy knit. Nice closed fit under the armholes. Modern Retro, festive, and looks a lot better in person.
  • Hispanitas 'Omega' Pump: Best low-heeled classic pump of them all. Killer comfort and very well made. Looks better on the foot. The shape moulds to an assortment of food shapes. I vote navy blue, and wish it came in a solid white.
  • Paul Green Molly Lace-Up Pump: A trendier choice of pump with a surprisingly unfussy ankle tie. Streamlined and flattering on the foot. Fits a lower and higher volume foot. Size down for low volume feet.
  • AGL Block Heel Pump: The Chanel copy that's BETTER than the Chanel because it's a LOT more comfortable. AMAZING classic pump. Nice pointy toe, and fun colour blocked heel. Fits a lower and higher volume foot. Size down for low volume feet.
  • Emerson Rose Bell Sleeve Sheath Dress: The fit of this dress is amazing, and it's comfortable too. Very nice navy. The fabric is thick and quite forgiving of lumpage and bumpage. Tailored but not clingy despite the stretch. Good on a curvier or straighter figure. And can we please bless the thigh-covering length. The V-neck works well on a larger bust and broader shoulder line, and isn't too low. Elegant.
  • SARTO By Franco Sarto 'Jolette' Penny Loafer: Every so often, the more affordable Franco Sarto brand makes a high-quality and comfortable shoe that puts designer footwear to shame. These loafers in the SOLID LEATHER - not the perforated leather - give Salvatore Ferragamo loafers a run for their money. Low volume feet need to size down half a size. Elegant and chic on the foot. I have them in white and tomato red.

Playful & Chic in LA

Los Angeles-based Kristine Thompson started her blog TrendyCurvy as a tribute to “all full-figured fashionistas with impeccable style and taste”. Kristine’s style is beautifully polished, on trend and Modern Classic. She adores a quirky pattern and fun footwear, enjoys sporting cardigans and loves colour. From the brightest of brights to soft pastels and soothing neutrals, Kristine wears colours with exuberant pizzazz.

A classic curve-hugging pencil skirt creates a completely different vibe if you go with an unusual colour. Kristine paired her eye-catching yellow skirt with a sheer black and white grid print blouse. The graphic pattern adds a playful element and plays off the yellow perfectly. Knotting the blouse emphasizes our blogger’s waistline. Black sandals bookend the top. Kristine has kept accessories to a minimum to let her outfit do all the talking. An architectural cuff bracelet, and black clutch with gold piping that echoes the blouse’s pattern are all that’s required. Bright red lipstick and nail polish match the colour intensity of the skirt.

Kristine Thompson - 2

Light grey with blush and white is a colour combination that’s often more associated with Spring and Summer, but you can sport it year round. For this Cali Winter look, Kristine is wearing ankle-length white skinny jeans and a light grey cowl-neck sweater with great drape. The cowl neck elongates the neck, while the medium gauge knit creates textural interest. The low-contrast cropped moto jacket adds spunk and the shorter length works well over the hip-length sweater. Dove grey pointy toe pumps complement the outfit colours, so does the chain strap crossbody. Kristine’s wavy ‘do further emphasizes the soft integrity of this look.

Kristine Thompson - 3

Two easy pieces are the base of this stylish, on trend outfit. Kristine dresses up a versatile turtleneck jersey dress with a toffee-coloured poncho. The earthy toffee looks luxe against the black, while the satin-y material provides subtle sheen. A fedora in a complementary shade of brown adds extra flair. Tailored black high-heeled sock booties create structure. A gold cuff bracelet and black clutch with gold piping are the chic accessories of choice. Kristine’s trademark red lipstick and wavy hair are the perfect polished finishing touches.

Kristine Thompson - 4

A statement piece like this marigold and bright blue patterned kimono creates instant drama. Kristine uses the breezy and arty topper as a third piece to dress up a simple tank and jeans outfit. The mid-wash skinnies work great with the cognac accessories and the marigold. The white tank adds polished crispness. Our blogger also has an excellent eye for detail. The cognac tote matches the wide leather strap on the sandals and the skinny belt. The chain strap on the sandals is an interesting design detail that complements Kristine’s oversized sunnies, watch and hoop earrings. A slightly darker red lip is a great finishing accent.

Kristine Thompson - 5

A fun stretchy skirt, fashion-forward footwear and on point accessories amp up the style factor of this super simple Summer look. Kristine has tucked a white scoop-neck tank into an olive midi pencil skirt with ruched sides. The ruching provides subtle camouflaging and textural interest. The cognac booties with their open lace detailing show the skin of the foot, thereby lengthening the leg line. Kristine accessorizes this breezy outfit with oversized hoop earrings, a shiny cuff bracelet, and a cognac clutch. Her flamboyant floppy hat offers stylish sun protection. Bright red lipstick and toenail polish finish off the look.

Kristine Thompson - 6

Another fab take on a blush with white ensemble. This time, Kristine has paired the drapey white tank with light-wash ripped girlfriend jeans for a casual night out. She’s left the tank untucked to show the curved hemline and wears it under a balloon-shaped jersey cardigan with elbow-length sleeves. A great layering piece for warmer weather! Rolling the jeans shows the entirety of our blogger’s fun taupe peep-toe booties with side laces. The suedette fabric adds subtle textural interest. By wearing them with the blush cardigan they seem to take on a mauvish tinge that complements the outfit’s colour palette. A bamboo cuff and fuzzy clutch are playful accessories. Soft pink lipstick, bright red nails, and the warm colours streaking through our blogger’s straight hair all go together beautifully.

Wardrobe Items That Lift My Spirits

As a fan of organized emotional shopping, I deliberately choose to buy a new wardrobe item because it lifts my spirits. I also often choose to wear a particular outfit because it lifts my spirits.

The attributes and sensibility of the items that I buy and wear that continually spark joy are consistent, and it’s mainly a visual thing. I’m taking it as a given that the fit is fabulous, flattering or just flattering enough, and comfortable.

Bright Colours

My mood is VERY positively affected by the colour of wardrobe items. It doesn’t matter how incredible the item looks and feels, it won’t make me happy if it’s the wrong colour. Colours that make me happy are my usual sour brights: tomato red, citron,  apple green, neon green, chartreuse, shocking pink, coral, watermelon, Dutch orange, and bright turquoise.

I have an assortment of bright coats, jackets, bags, knitwear and blouses because they lift my mood in our grey and rainy Seattle weather. My bright green specs and citron wallet lift my mood daily, and add a happy touch to neutral outfits.

White & Cream

I love sour brights, but items in shades of white also make me very happy. Of all the neutrals, white is the brightest and most crisp, which is probably why it lifts my mood. I have coats, jackets, jeans, skirts, tops, footwear, belts and bags in white, bone and cream. I wear them year round. Some of the items are wardrobe essentials, and many are wardrobe workhorses.

Sparkle & Shine

Sparkly things are bright (there’s a pattern here.) I love gold shoes, watches, hardware, AND white pearls. White pearls add a bright and shiny component to my outfit without fail. I also like sparkly knitwear.

Classic Patterns

I tire of patterns that aren’t classics, so I stick to polka dots, stripes, florals, checks and animal prints. My spirits are especially lifted when I wear florals and stripes in the Spring and Summer, and checks in the colder months.

Lace

I love lace because it’s Modern Retro, romantic and pretty. All my underwear is lacy, which makes a difference to how I feel in my outfit despite its lack of public visibility. I have an assortment of lace dresses, tops, and adore lace trim.

Impeccable Quality

There’s something about wearing impeccable quality that lifts my spirits, and it’s as simple as that. Quite magical.

Dressy

I’m happiest wearing dressier clothes and polished outfits, full stop. My casual outfits are “dressed up” because it lifts my spirits. I can be working from home, cooking all day for a dinner party, or having a quiet day with Greg and Sam – and I wear a regular casual or smart casual outfit with pearls and make-up.

Judging by how I’ve refreshed my style for Spring and Summer, I’m very focussed on items that lift my spirits. I’m still working on the white tops, trousers and dresses, but here are the items:

This brings me to why Ann Taylor’s flared striped sweater did not work. I loved the way it felt, draped, moved, and fit. Luxurious, pretty, sufficiently dressy, interesting, fresh, romantic and tailored. The ink blue was fab, but the forest green did not make me happy as we head into Spring and Summer. I tried to brighten things up by combining it with white jeans, white footwear, pearls, green specs and a citron bag. But I couldn’t shake that the colour combination dampened my spirits. Back it went.

Over to you. Which types of wardrobe items lift your spirits, and why? How different are the attributes of those wardrobe items compared to mine?

Denim Jacket 101

When I started my style consulting business many years ago, I thought that everyone liked wearing denim jackets. After all, they’re a timeless item in a fluid or tailored fit, very versatile, an excellent topper option for dresses and skirts, a way to toughen a sweet or precious outfit, and one of the best ways to dress down an outfit. They’re excellent to travel with because they’re robust, can be stashed into a tote, and look as great layered under a wrap or cocoon coat.

Well, it turns out that denim jackets are far from being loved by all. Many women say they feel:

  • Stiff
  • Masculine
  • Boxy
  • Uncomfortable
  • Overly casual
  • Not age appropriate
  • Unflattering on a larger bust

And if you’re not into denim on denim, they are not the best topper to combine with jeans.

I understand the aversion to denim jackets much better these days. That said, most of my clients wear denim jackets, and some of them are complete denim jacket converts. Clients who are in their 70s and 80s wear denim jackets with panache. So do clients who have a larger bust, are very curvy all over, and plus sized. And wearing denim on denim can be done if you mismatch the washes (although keeping the washes the same is a fashionable look too).

Enjoying a denim jacket is about finding just the right one. Often it’s about making sure it satisfies four important criteria: stretch, fit, length and wash.

1. Stretch

It’s important to wear a denim jacket with a stretchy spandex content. The stretch makes the jacket soft, comfortable, and allows you to drive and commute with ease. The silhouette moulds to your natural silhouette so that it isn’t boxy, and you don’t feel bulky.

2. Fit

A tailored fit that nips in at the waist is a flop proof way to go. It offsets feelings of “looking too masculine”, overly casual, and streamlines the torso. A fluid fit can be just as fab, especially if you prefer to wear fluid tops. Denim jackets can be successfully altered to fit too.

3. Length

A denim jacket looks particularly good when it’s a bit shorter, especially when it’s paired with skirts and dresses. Beware of denim jackets with very curved hems because the style can look overly long and a little dated. More often than not, my client doesn’t like her denim jacket because it’s too long and boxy. As soon as we tailor the fit and crop the length, it’s a different animal. Buy a petite size if you’re not regular height or tall, and notice the enormous difference in proportions.

4. Wash

If you don’t like to wear denim on denim in the same wash as your jeans, choose a denim jacket in a different blue wash, or opt for a white or black denim jacket. For a dressier look that might feel more age appropriate to your eye, opt for a darker wash, a uniform blue wash, or stick to white.

Oversized denim jackets can make a trendy statement, but you have to embrace a look that is not traditionally flattering. I tried them, but didn’t like the visual effect on my narrow shoulder line (they were better in the ‘80s with my shoulder pads.) So I stick to fitted and fluid denim jackets in shades of blue. I have an assortment of lengths depending on how I want to incorporate the topper into outfits. Denim jackets are a wardrobe essential for my style, and I will absolutely wear denim on denim with mismatched washes. I just added a pretty statement piece with embroidery to my capsule, which you can see in the collection below.

Who likes to wear denim jackets? If you’re not a denim jacket wearer, have I convinced you to give them a try?
