Casual Outfit with Wide Cropped Pants

There’s a lot of resistance to wide cropped pants, but I’m not giving up just yet. They can be the answer to a range of style needs, like wearing jeans less frequently, wearing pants casually, creating a silhouette that is neither body-con nor voluminous, and wearing comfortable shoes with trousers in a flattering way.

The way the black wide cropped pants are styled below is an easy casual look that can be worn by most. Combine wide cropped pants with a T-shirt, and finish off the look with sneakers and a cute bag. Add jewellery, eyewear and watch as desired. Comfortable, on trend, fresh and casual.

A few suggestions about the outfit proportions:

  • Choose a T-shirt silhouette that works for you, which might mean a V-neck, scoop neck or boat neck, instead of a crew. Select your favourite sleeve length too.
  • Keep the tee relatively short to visually lengthen the leg from the hips upward. Semi-tucking the tee is a great way to achieve a shorter length and add structure to the outfit.
  • Keep the length of the pants as short as you see on the model, which is two to four inches above the ankle bone.
  • Keep the silhouette of the pants narrower rather than wider if you prefer a streamlined silhouette.
  • A white tee works well with white sneakers, but a low-contrast darker tee will accentuate the visual integrity of the outfit and offset horizontally cutting lines.
  • Substitute the sneakers with flats like oxfords, d’Orsay flats, sandals or loafers if that’s more your cup of tea.

For my own version of this outfit, I’d wear a cropped white cotton pullover instead of a tee, white hi-tops or loafers instead of regular white sneakers, add a denim jacket and pearls, and throw in a bright bag.

I have a hunch that in many cases, it’s simply a question of getting used to seeing and wearing the shorter and wider pants silhouette. I bet more of you will be wearing wide cropped pants next season!

Ensemble: Tee, Blazer & Trendy Bottoms

Combining a graphic T-shirt with a blazer, pair of trousers or jeans, fun footwear and hip handbag is a timeless combination. The items that evolve the fastest with the trends are the silhouettes of the bottoms and the style of the footwear. You can also choose a tailored or boxy jacket silhouette. The trendier those items are, the more you’ll change up the vibe of the outfit formula.

GUCCI Cropped Stretch-jersey Flared Pants

The outfit on the model combines cropped flared pants with printed tee, checked blazer, and platform boots. I’ve used a Spring palette, but feel free to choose any colours. The tops and bottoms of the ensemble can be mixed and matched with each other, with either blazer, with either bag, and with any of the shoes. You can create anything from a neutral outfit with one pattern, right through to a colourful outfit with several patterns. Take your pick.

Here are the components of the ensemble:

Trendy Bottoms: Think wide cropped jeans or trousers, flared or straight crops, embroidered jeans, culottes, bell-bottoms, boyfriend jeans, slouchy trousers, or ankle pants. Choose a solid or a pattern. If the trendy bottoms aren’t your cup of tea, go with a modem classic like bootcut jeans, skinnies, straight legs, or throw in a tube or pencil skirt.

Graphic T-Shirt: Choose a fun graphic tee with a pattern, panel print, or slogan. The point here is to NOT wear a solid top.

Blazer: Choose a solid or patterned blazer in a tailored, fluid or oversized fit. Choose neutrals or colours. Think checks, florals, stripes or pinstripes for the pattern.

Footwear: Choose a pair of shoes that works with the silhouette of the bottoms. Go neutral, metallic, or throw in red shoes

Accessories: Finish off the look with a bag that works with the outfit. A colour blocked bag is a fun addition. A solid or patterned scarf is optional. Add jewellery, eyewear and watch as desired.

Weekly Roundup: Shoes in Wide & Narrow Widths

With low volume feet, I usually need a narrow size in sandals and sandal booties to get a good fit. Otherwise my toes fall through the front of the sandals and there’s too much space between the vamp of the shoe and the top of my foot. Sometimes, I need to order half a size down. Closed footwear is a lot easier to manage because I can add insoles and seldom have a problem with a toe box that’s too snug. Pointy-toed footwear works well for low volume feet.

High volume feet tend to fill out sandals and sandal booties more effectively, making most closed shoes the challenge because of a tight toe box. Pointy-toed footwear and wide feet are generally a hard match, although wide sizes can work. Order half or a whole size up if you need to insert a custom orthotic.

Here’s a roundup of comfortable current footwear that’s available in wide, regular and narrow widths. Some of the styles offer extra wide widths. There are many colour options per style so be sure to browse the options.

  • Bella-Vita Isabelle Wedge Sandal: A sandal that looks very bold on the foot. I like this sandal best in gold, although all the colours are nice. Read the rave reviews.
  • VANELi Linsie Block Heel Sandal: A classic sandal with a dressy touch. Works well on wide feet in the wide size.
  • Naturalizer Faith Sandal: This sandal looks good on all sorts of foot shapes. Strong and simple. Pick the right width and Bob's your uncle.
  • Me Too Sienna Laser Cut Wedge Sandal: The laser cut creates a maximal look on the foot. Great in the wide widths, yet streamlined on the foot.
  • Trotters 'Candela' Pump: I like this pump best in the earthy cognac pattern. Interesting, and a good classic.
  • Naturalizer Marianne Sneaker: Easy slip-on sneaks for Team Ultra Casual.
  • Naturalizer Felicity Sandal: Light blue shoes are unique and these are best on a wider foot with a high instep. Maximal on the foot.
  • Bella-Vita Pacey Cage Sandal: A complex sandal for Team Strappy. It creates an interesting line on the foot. Excellent with ankle pants in a similar colour.
  • Earth 'Intrepid' Peep Toe Bootie: I like this style best on a petite with a wider foot and calf, and slimmer ankle.
  • Louise Et Cie Karisa Ankle Cuff Sandal: Super elegant, and suede is fab in Summer too. Best on a narrow ankle. Exposes quite a lot of the foot so consider yourself warned. Might not pass work dress codes.
  • BP Decker Lace-Up Sandal: Great price and especially suited to a broader foot and narrow heel.
  • Bella-Vita Fonda: Gladiator Fabness. I couldn't BELIEVE how well these fit a dainty foot and narrow ankle in a narrow size despite the chunkiness of the style. Soft leather that does not cut into your skin. I have these in gold.
  • VANELi Celie T-Strap Sandal: These look particularly good on a dainty foot and ankle in a narrow size.
  • David Tate Mint Wedge Slide Sandal: Graphic Mule Fabness.
  • Naturalizer Veronica Loafer: If loafers fall off your feet because your feet are narrow, try these in the narrow size. Conversely these come in a WW size if you need extra wide footwear.
  • Munro 'Cookie' Slingback Sandal: These are just about the most comfortable platform sandals for high insteps. They look better on the foot than in the photo. I was thrilled to see that they come in white this year.
  • Munro Lulu Slip-On Sneaker: The insoles come out of these sneaks so that you can insert a custom orthotic. Very streamlined on the foot.
  • Naturalizer Fae Sandal: Soft as butter and works for an assortment of ankle shapes. The narrow is not that narrow.
  • Earth Hydra Sandal: Great for wide feet and narrower heels. Read the rave reviews.
  • Rockport Cobb Hill Hollywood Sandal: Fab hard-edged casual sandal with ankle detailing in black. Great arch support and cushioning. Wide works really well for wide feet.
  • Munro Gabbie Sneaker: These look super cute on the foot and are VERY comfy. Modern and streamlined. The insoles come out so that you can easily insert a custom orthotic.

Now Ad-Free for Everyone

In October 2015 we took our first step away from being an ad-supported website by removing ads for logged in members. At the same time we added the option of supporting YLF by becoming a patron and making a monthly contribution. A few months later we added the option of an annual, non-recurring contribution

Today we’re making another tweak to the model. From now on YLF will be ad-free for all visitors, regardless of whether they are logged in or not.

Our reasoning is the same as it was when we turned off ads for logged in members. Ads slow down the site, are sometimes distracting, and do ever more sophisticated tracking in order to show you the most relevant ad they can. We’re just happier with YLF as an ad-free experience.

If you would like to support YLF, please consider becoming a patron. We would love to have you as a part of the team.

Eleven Years of YLF

It’s impossible to top last year’s MAGICAL 10th anniversary, and all the incredible generosity that went with it. But here we are, one year later on YLF’s eleventh anniversary. I’m still basking in the warmth and emotion of last year’s celebrations, so I’ll keep things short and sweet today.

YOU are what make the global YLF community exceptional. You graciously share your wit and wisdom in blog comments and forum posts. Your thoughtful, compassionate, helpful, intelligent and insightful contributions enrich my life, make me grow as a person, and provide me with daily inspiration. It blows me away when I think that some of you have been participating on YLF since its inception on 5 April 2006. WOW.

From the bottom of my heart thank you for eleven years of support, and for helping me to spread the word that you can have fun with fashion at any age.
