Mum-on-the-Go in Red, White and Blue

A new outfit from Amber McNaught of Forever Amber, whom we introduced to YLF in July 2014.

A casual, put-together outfit with nautical influences. New Mum Amber paired distressed skinny jeans with a boat neck Breton long-sleeved tee and Modern Classic Converse sneakers. The zipped cuffs on the jeans are a fun design detail that add a little extra something. Her white lightweight blazer adds polish and effectively dresses up a jeans and tee outfit. So does the tomato red satchel that matches our blogger’s go-to red lipstick. Cat-eye sunnies and Amber’s signature red locks finish off the look.

Nordstrom Roundup: Comfy Closed-Toe Spring Shoes

Closed-toe footwear is great for mild Spring weather, and the collection below showcases some of my favourites in Nordstrom right now. I’ve included a few boots and boot hybrids too. Many of these were recently winners on clients, and the online reviews are excellent. Most of the shoes are very comfortable. Be sure to browse the abundant colour options, because you might like the shoe more in another colour.

  • Ron White Nell Slip-On Sneaker: Beautifully made sturdy slip-on wedge sneakers with fab texture. The patterned versions are great too. Best on higher volume feet, a quality item, and super comfy. More supportive than expected.
  • Ecco 'Soft 7' Cap Toe Sneaker: A repeat style and ongoing favourite with clients across a spectrum of colours. Works best on regular and higher volume feet, and can fit an orthotic. Loving the gentle earth tones for Spring. Extremely comfy.
  • Paul Green Roxy Espadrille: If ballet flats slip off your feet - try these. Quite supportive, well made, and works on higher volume feet. Size down half a size for lower volume feet. The white looks particularly fresh.
  • Hispanitas Yakira Mule: A dainty and pretty mule in a delicate lilac (or tan), that fits a regular volume foot. Made in Spain and a quality piece. Very comfy. Buttery leather.
  • SARTO By Franco Sarto Ayers Loafer Flat: A loafer-sneaker hybrid with extremely good reviews. Fun streamlined sporty vibe. Runs big so size down.
  • Paul Green Sheri Ballet Flat: Elegant and classic ballet flats that stay on your feet because of the subtle elasticated top. Quite supportive and very well made. Works on higher and lower volume feet. Lover volume feet size down half a size.
  • Hispanitas Mariel Slingback Pump: Dainty slingback with a hard edge, so quite unique. Elegant on the foot, made in Spain, and best on lower volume feet. A quality item and very comfy if your feet are narrow.
  • Linea Paolo Waylon Western Mule: Fun and very trendy cowboy mules that add pizzazz to outfits. Works best on higher volume feet.
  • LEWIT Cara Mule: Buttery soft mules that work on a variety of feet. Good on high insteps. Comes in neutrals too. Quite maximal on the feet, so consider yourself warned. Lower volume feet can try sizing down.
  • Leith Gillis Stretch Bootie: Fun refined floral boots for low volume feet and narrow ankles only. Higher volume feet - stay away. Quite comfy if you can manage the heel height.
  • Aquatalia Emmaline Embroidered Loafer: Beautifully made white loafers with asymmetrical embroidery detailing. A little jarring on the feet at first, but stunning after five seconds. Works on an range of feet. Comfortable.
  • Loeffler Randall Lulu Block Heel Mule: Flattering on the foot, unique metallics, and read the rave reviews.
  • Me Too Zara Block Heel Mule: A fab substantial casual mule that works well with jeans and cropped pants. Good on regular and higher volume feet.
  • Topshop Jolly Flared Heel d'Orsay Pump: A synthetic and affordable white pump for lower volume feet. Read the rave reviews.
  • Free People Sienna Ruffle Mule: You have to get used to the exaggerated length of the mule because it completely covers the vamp of the foot. A little avant-garde and best on longer feet. Comfy.
  • Munro Durell Oxford: A very comfy chunky oxford that comes in a variety of widths and colours. The white soul and heel makes the shoe pretty and modern. The perforations are ventilating.
  • Pelle Moda Dezi Pump: An elegant and dainty classic that works on low and regular volume feet. I vote navy. Slam dunk with dark ankle pants.
  • COACH Bowery Tea Rose Cutout Chelsea Bootie: A bootie that's best on lower volume feet and narrow ankles. The shaft might cut into your shins depending on how you stride.
  • SARTO By Franco Sarto 'Jolette' Penny Loafer: A repeat style in its third or fourth season - they are THAT timeless, fab, comfy and quite affordable. I have four pairs: tomato red, blush and two pairs of white. They are my go-to shoe in Spring and Summer because they work with every outfit. Very comfy, dressy and a modern classic. Works on a variety of feet. Size down half a size, and read the rave reviews.
  • Hispanitas Mina Loafer Pump: Extremely elegant on the foot. Beautifully made in Spain, and a quality item. Comfortable. A tad maximal despite the soothing colours. Make sure you like the two-toned effect when you style the shoes in outfits. Works for both lower and higher volume feet.
  • MARC FISHER LTD Charly Western Bootie: Super cute Western shootie to wear with bootcuts, flares or ankle pants. Works on a range of feet.
  • PIKOLINOS Royal Water Resistant Derby: Extremely comfortable and quite playful. Less chunky than it looks in the photo. Works on both higher and lower volume feet. Both the blue and gold are fab.
  • Naturalizer Simonette Mule: The style of the mule encloses more of the foot which makes them feel more secure. They don’t “cluck," and are soft and cushioning. Elegant, refined and dressier than most mules. Available in WIDTHS, so low volume feet should order a narrow size. I have them in a narrow in white, and they are AMAZING. A quality item.
  • Naturalizer Emiline Flat Loafer: You can almost always count on Naturalizer to cover narrow, regular and wide shoe widths, and I’m thankful for that. These loafers are heavenly comfortable on the feet in the solids and metallics, and are well worth the rave reviews. The navy and blush metallic options are unique. If loafers fall off your feet - try these.
  • Madewell Brady Block Heel Bootie: Well-made cut-out booties for higher volume feet. Comfortable, crisp and polished.
  • Hispanitas Melanie Pointy Toe Pump: Very comfortable and well-made teal floral pumps. Quality item. Best on low-volume feet.
  • Hispanitas Carmela Loafer Pump: Beautifully made heeled loafer for regular and lower volume feet. Crisp and dressy. Looks cleaner than the ubiquitous Gucci to my eye.
  • MATISSE Half Moon Ankle Strap Loafer: Great backless ankle strap loafers for wider feet. Comfy and quite unique. They were too wide for me, but super cute on the foot.
  • Free People 'Royale' Pointy Toe Flat: A fun futuristic boho-lite style for high volume feet that comes in many colours. Read the rave reviews.
  • Naturalizer Blair Bootie: Clean, crisp, polished and comfortable. Comes in wide widths. Might be a little wide on the ankle in larger sizes, but not too bad.

Trend: Wrap Tops

The classic wrap top is back with a vengeance. They were very popular ten to twelve years ago, but fell away when fashion favoured the fluid and oversized vibe. The sisterly version that followed the wrap top was the draped blouse, or wrap-front top. Wrapped in front but voluminous on the midsection, creating a different look to the traditional tailored “ballerina” wrap top.

I’m happy to report that the tailored wrap top is on trend. I love when modern classic items make a trendy statement and become the hip contender. It sends a message that fashion fads are a dated concept, that trends have a higher longevity factor than they used to, and that it’s how you incorporate an item into an outfit that makes it look current and fabulous.

Wrap tops are tailored at the waist most of the time, thereby creating conventionally flattering outfit proportions. To my eye, this looks fresh amidst the sea of unstructured tops of our fashion era. The wrapped front can be real or “faux” depending on the style. Either way, the silhouette narrows at the waist creating a streamlined effect. Wrap tops can be woven or knitted, sleeved or sleeveless, long or short, and patterned or solid.

Here’s a collection of wrap top variations.

Sometimes, wrap tops aren’t tailored at the waist, as these examples show. Some do narrow at the hem with a welt or tie creating structure that way. Some look wide and straight. These tops are suited to those who don’t want to define the waist, but like the visual effect of the wrap.

Wrap tops that define the waist are a slam dunk on a curvy hourglass and pear-shaped body type. The wrapped fronts create a V-neckline that works extremely well on a larger bust and/or shorter neck and broader shoulder line. The tops work well with the high-rise bottoms trend because the waist tie and waistband are in the same position on the body.

Real and faux wrap tops can be slightly odd on the wrap section when they aren’t cut properly, thereby fighting with the bustline. But when the cut is good, a wrap top flatters the bustline and waist beautifully. The knitted versions fit particularly well over a larger bust because they stretch and mould to the contour of the body. They can also be quite forgiving of midsection “extra bits” when they don’t cling on that part of the body.

Simple and sleek faux wrap tops layer extremely well under blazers and jackets. The jersey versions are an easy item to travel with, especially for business wear capsules. The maximal versions with gigantic ties and bows on the waist make a fabulous statement on their own. They are hard to layer under a topper, but fun for Summer.

I generally steer away from wrap tops because the necklines are too wide for my body type. My narrow shoulders, long neck, and regular size bust battle to fill them out. That said, about twelve years ago I had a few AMAZING gauzy and delicate faux wrap tops that worked well for my body type. The neckline created a shawl collar effect on my shoulder neck points and the V-shape in front was very narrow. These specific design details provided ample structure around my shoulders, and shortened my neck. I wore them with a pretty lace camisole that peeked out from under the narrow V-neckline, and layered them under jackets. I am open to wearing that type of wrap top because it provides structure where I need it most. I also enjoy defining the waist.

Over to you. What’s your take on wrap tops? Many of my clients are back to wearing the silhouette because they enjoy the streamlined effect.

Twelve Years of YLF

Today, it’s already two years since we celebrated a decade of YLF. On the one hand I can’t believe we’ve come so far. On the other, I can’t imagine doing anything else. Helping people find their personal style, solving style challenges, suggesting wardrobe management strategies, keeping up with an evolving fashion industry, and lifting people up when they are down about their style, all feels like a calling to me.

Husband Greg suggested I start a blog at the end of 2005. He created and designed our site — and all its frequent updates — as his labour of love to me. Greg is full of fabulous ideas and creating YLF was one of his best. I am forever grateful for his support and belief in me.

We launched on April 5 2006 and a small blog grew into a bustling social community with a very engaged forum and fabulous Finds section. Wonderful Inge joined our team seven years ago and became a very close friend. Precious Yorkies Jasmine and Rosie were our brilliant CEOs until they passed on the torch to sensational Sam. His Lordship is a blog and Instagram star and supports us in that special way that doggies do.

YLF is unique in many respects. First, there is fresh weekday content, and I haven’t missed a day of posting in twelve years. Second and most importantly, YLF is not about me and my style — it’s about YOU and YOUR style. It took me two years to show myself on YLF, and this was the post back in 2008 when it happened.

Anne Fontaine

I’m not an outfit blogger or writer. I’m a fashion stylist who talks about a subject that is both my profession and my passion. I don’t do product reviews, and I don’t accept free wardrobe items from retailers. These days we run an ad-free website, which you can choose to support by becoming a YLF Patron. I work with clients one-to-one in my wardrobe and style consulting business, which gives me a unique perspective. I see up close how fashion looks, fits and feels on a diverse set of people, and I pass that knowledge on to you.

Just for fun, here are some old YLF photos from posts you might remember from 2009 to 2011. It seems like such a long and short time ago.

My first New York Fashion Week in 2010:

My favourite photo on our site is Jasmine photo bombing a shoot for an accessory post, and I didn’t know she was standing right behind me.

Turning 40 eight years ago. I still have the dress but don’t wear it because I’m off sleeveless sheaths. Who knows, maybe I’ll wear it again someday. The Valentino bag in the second outfit was a gift from the YLF community and is a prized possession. I still have and wear my citron trench today.

White Docs and Purple in 2011. I don’t have any of the these items anymore.

Purple Jumper and White Docs

This is back when I wore three inch heels to holiday parties and events. The shoes are long gone, and the other items wore out.

Ball Gown and Biker Jacket

Enjoying bootcuts with blazers and vintage Chanel. These days I much prefer my dramatic bell-bottoms that are wider at the hems. But I’m never passing on my Chanel bag.

Bootcuts with Blazers

The Classics that don’t let me down. My love for white and sour brights continue. I still wear the citron peacoat very regularly.

One unique aspect of YLF is the engaged forum, which is in its tenth year. A few years after the forum, we added Finds, which is one of my favourite features on YLF. I love being able to use it to manage my shopping, and having my wardrobe represented digitally has become indispensable to me. I don’t know how I managed before that.

You are what makes YLF exceptional. You graciously share your wit and wisdom in blog comments and forum posts. Your thoughtful, compassionate, intelligent and insightful contributions enrich my life, make me grow as a person, and provide me with daily inspiration. It blows me away when I think that some of you have been participating on YLF since its inception twelve years ago. From the bottom of my heart THANK YOU for the support, and for helping me to spread the word that you can have fun with fashion at any age.

Team Silhouette or Team Colour

Changing up the silhouettes or the colours of an outfit are effective ways to create the variety that combats outfit boredom and prevent a style rut. You’re on Team Silhouette if you crave a change in silhouette before colour, and vice versa for team colour. Note that “colour” here can be both neutrals and non-neutrals.

I tend to crave a change in colour before I crave a change in silhouette. That’s why I have a wardrobe rich in many colours, including both light and dark neutrals. The neutrals range from all shades of white and denim blue, to dark blue and black. The colours vary from sour brights and neons, to pastels and earth tones. I can wear the same outfit formula or “uniform” throughout a season as long as I swap out the colours of the components. I tend to purchase the same silhouettes in tops especially — Winter turtlenecks and crew necks are a good example — but have a very wide assortment of colours. The same goes for jeans, blazers, dresses, loafers, booties and bags. The silhouettes are similar, but the variety and the way I combat outfit boredom comes through in the diverse set of colours (and patterns for that matter), and how the items are remixed in an outfit. I bat for Team Colour.

Over to you. Do you bat for Team Silhouette or Team Colour? You might find that you bat for both because you crave a change in silhouette as much as a change in colour. There are no right and wrong answers, but simply preferences that help us to build a style that satisfies our needs and helps us to navigate the overwhelming world of retail.
