A Versatile Blush Complement For Spring & Summer

A “complement” is a group of wardrobe items that match in colour, pattern or vibe. Having a complement in an outfit makes it look more cohesive and pulled together. I create colour complements with footwear, bags, scarves, belts and sometimes eyewear.

The tomato red, white and blush items in my wardrobe create the most versatile complements. Blush is surprisingly versatile, especially when you repeat it as an accent in an outfit. My blush complements have grown over time. Here are the exact items from my wardrobe.

There are four blush items that I’ve been enjoying most this Spring, and they create two very effective 3-piece “shoes-bag-belt” complements. The belt and the loafers are from last season, while the ballet flats and Furla bag are new.

I’ve been adding my favourite blush complements to citron and white outfits, to tomato red looks, all sorts of blue outfits, and to black & white combinations. And therein lies the versatility. Blush can be remixed with pastels, light neutrals, dark neutrals, and brights — across solids and patterns. Blush can function like a neutral. It’s light, making it more Spring and Summery. It’s less bright than optical white or a metallic. It’s also easier to wear blush as an accessory or pair of shoes, instead of as a solid against your face. That way it won’t make you feel washed out. I finish off my look with nude or a soft pink lipstick which brings out the blush components of the outfit further.

Below is one of the ways I’ve been wearing my blush complement recently, and it’s become a favourite Spring outfit. The exact items are shown in the collection. I combine a slubby citron pullover with a lightweight citron cocoon topper to create a tonal twinset effect. I wear that with white jeans and add the blush shoes-bag-belt complement. For extra warmth I add a camisole and nude knee-highs. I finish things off with chunky white pearls and specs. This colour combination creates my own sunshine on a rainy Spring day.

Eight Colourful Fab Finds

There has been an amazing assortment of colours to choose from this season, and I’m not complaining. You can count on retail to supply us with neutrals, but non-neutrals are the luck of the draw. Sometimes you like the colours on offer, and sometimes you don’t. That’s why having a diverse range is best. There’s something for everyone.

The items here have been winners on my clients. I’m rooting for the colourful options, but you’ll find neutrals too. Pay careful attention to sizing because it’s inconsistent. Read the rave reviews online.

1. Dansko Maci Mule Sandal

These are extremely comfortable and work well for wider, higher volume feet. They can work for lower volume feet if you size down. The raspberry was surprisingly versatile in an outfit creation session with a client. The shoes are casual but polished, supportive and well made.

2. Boden Tie Waist Shirt Dress

A stunningly elegant casual dress that makes you look pulled together on a hot Summer’s day. It’s a very well made, quality item that drapes with heft and chic. It works well on a hourglass and pear-shaped body type with a larger bust, but the silhouette works equally well on a straighter figure with a smaller bust and a narrower lower half — the cut is that good. The frock can work without the tie, and is available in longer lengths. My 5ft 8 size US10 client bought it in a long in green. I gasped after she tried it on. She looked stunning and elegant. It’s breezy, covered and comfortable too. If I wasn’t sorted with Summer dresses, the red would be mine. Looks fabulous with flats, sandals, slides and mules. Not for petites.

3. Loft Pastel Denim Jacket

The best non-neutral denim jacket of the season. Extremely good fit, great fabric, and very comfortable. Tailored and flattering. Available in petites, plus and tall. Size down a size because it runs big. Not as polished, but available in blue denim if that’s your preference.

4. Loft Pointelle Blouson Sleeve Sweater

Exuberant sleeves can be very annoying when they’re long, but the cuff on this style gives it ample structure and stays put. I bought it in citron and I LOVE it. The fabric is gorgeously slubbly and drapey. It’s ever so pretty and looks quite elegant. A fab warm-weather pullover that makes me feel a lot more pulled together than wearing a T-shirt. The welt is wide and doesn’t taper back to the body so I don’t think it looks polished unless you give it a semi-tuck. I wear it with a cami, but it’s sufficiently opaque to wear without one. Must size down a size.

5. WHBM High-Low Dresses

Forum member Janet modelled the first floral dress for us, and took my breath away. It’s sublime on her curvy body type with larger bust, shorter waist, and long legs. It fits like a dream, moves beautifully in motion, has plenty of length, is sufficiently breezy, covered and tailored in all the right places, comfortable, and machine washable. Elegant and pulled together on a hot day. Looks fabulous with flats, sandals, slides and mules. The second solid dress is very romantic and drapes like a dream (comes in black and white polka dots). Size down a size in both dresses.

6. 1901 Crew Neck Sweater

A very simple yet refined and delicate fine gauge pullover that works on a range of body types. Feels gorgeous against the skin, and is dressier than a T-shirt. Great to layer under jackets or wear on its own with a scarf or statement necklace. It’s long so not good on short torsos or petites. The yellow earned a place in my wardrobe and works well with my lemon jeans.

7. Sanctuary Tiered Linen Tees

A popular Summery style of top because it’s cool, covered, comfortable, and better than a basic tee. Works well on a larger bust and/or shorter neck. The fluid fit is forgiving on the midsection. The V-neck is not too low. The darker colours are not see-through. The lighter colours might need a camisole. The sleeve ties are not as fussy as they look.

8. Loft Plus Tops

Three cheers for the Loft for extending their size curves this season. They have an excellent assortment of tops across sizes US16 to US26 that are well worth a look. A good variety of silhouettes, fabrics and colours. Affordable prices, especially on discount day. The quality has greatly improved too.

Your Hair Grooming Regimen

Hair grooming regimens differ based on the texture of your hair, the way it’s styled, how long it takes to style, the time you have available to style it, your workout routine, and whether your hair is a statement component of your look.

I view my “pixie and specs” combination as an important part of my style. So I have it cut and highlighted every six weeks, and invest time in styling it every day. When my hair feels off, my outfit feels off, so it’s worth the investment to me.

My hair is fine, wispy, soft and wavy. It looks best when it’s very clean. It is easiest to style when it’s just been washed, so I shampoo and condition my hair daily. It’s especially necessary because I do hot yoga regularly. There’s no way my hair could look fab unwashed on the morning after an evening yoga class. Another reason to wash daily is that I use styling products, and I don’t like the look or feel of day-old-product in my hair. It’s also harder to style.

My hair is in good condition because it’s cut regularly, and I use salon shampoo and conditioner that is gentle and moisturizing.

I wear my pixie straight, wavy, or slicked back. I blow and straighten my hair for the straight and slicked-back looks, but leave it to dry naturally with product for the wavy look. Although I wash and style my hair every day, this is quick thanks to a good cut, and willing hair that is easy to style and quick to dry.

Greg has gorgeous salt and pepper hair that’s very different to mine. It’s also an integral part of his look with a pair of statement specs. His hair is extremely thick and quite curly. It’s coarser and drier than my hair, and absorbs product much better. It grows fast and he has it cut every four to five weeks. It works well for him to shampoo his hair twice a week and use conditioner one of those times. He does wet and style it with product daily to keep it looking neat and polished. Greg’s hair air dries, never looks dirty, and is always in place. The curls work beautifully with the cut and moisturizing product, and he never has a bad hair day. When his hair gets wet in the Seattle rain, it flounces perfectly back into place as it dries. I want to patent Greg’s hair.

Greg and I both have very short statement hair, but our hair washing frequency and grooming regimens are different. Over to you. What’s your hair washing frequency and is your hairstyle an integral part of your look? Do you put in the time to style it every day?

Outfit Formula : Business Casual & Black Mules

This outfit formula was inspired by looks I’ve been helping some clients put together for Spring business casual. Sandals are usually not part of the work dress code, but dressier mules are a fun and trendy way to do “sandals-lite”. Mules are generally okay with work dress codes because the toes are covered.

Black mules come in a variety of silhouettes. Heeled, flat, casual, dressy, sueded, with hardware, and in all sorts of vamp lengths and toe shapes. Take your pick.

Black mules are a slam dunk for those who like to wear black bottoms and black footwear to work. The good news is that the two look great together, and are a good way to refresh your style for the office. The point is to show some ankle and leg when wearing mules. Covering up the back of the mule hides the main feature of the style. If you get the right shape and size for your feet, mules fit extremely well and feel secure and comfortable. They can look polished and pulled together if you choose a dressier version.

The outfit formula:

Black Bottoms + Business Casual Top + Business Casual Topper + Black Mules

Here are four renditions to get you started. I’ve chosen a black, white and grey palette with a pop of colour. Feel free to choose any colour palette, although the point here is to keep the bottoms and footwear black.

1. Cropped Pants, Mules & Blazer

Combine black cropped straights or flares with a layering top and non-black blazer. Cropped pants can hover between two to six inches above the ankle bone. Ankle pants that finish two to three inches above the ankle bone are usually best for the office. Finish off the look with black heeled or flat mules and a structured bag.

Mango Cropped Button Pants

2. Skirt, Mules & Jacket

Combine a black skirt with a layering top and a jacket that works with the length of the skirt. Tuck or semi-tuck the top. Or leave it out. A flared skirt is shown here, but a pencil skirt will work just fine. Finish off the look with black heeled or flat mules and a structured bag. You can absolutely wear flat mules with a skirt or dress, so please don’t think that you have to wear heels — that’s a dated style concept. Pointy toes will elongate the leg line, as will tucking or semi-tucking the top to showcase or hint at the waist.

3. Slim Ankle Pants, Mules & Long Topper

Combine slim black ankle pants with a layering top and a solid or patterned long topper like a cocoon jacket, duster coat, long blazer or maxi cardigan. Leave it open in front to create an elongating vertical line down the centre front of the body. Finish off the look with black heeled or flat mules and a structured bag.

4. Roomy Pants, Mules & Statement Blouse

Combine black culottes, wide crops or cropped flares with a dressy statement top that looks professional and dressy without a jacket. It does not need to be tucked or semi-tucked unless you want to lengthen the leg line from the hips upwards. A wrap top is a great idea. Create a low contrast between the top and bottom if you don’t want a horizontally cutting line across the body. Finish off the look with black heeled or flat mules and a structured bag. Add jewellery, eyewear and watch as desired.

If they’re not having fun with fashion, I don’t know who is. I liked that within the strict rules about what is cool now — judges are often within the same esthetic and might even be wearing the same exact sneaker model — each stays true to his own style image.”
