The Good and Bad of Wrap Tops

Wrap tops are a classic we see every season. This season they are abundant, because the waist definition works well with oh-so trendy wide cropped pants, culottes, flares, and fuller skirts. The versions that are defined at the waist complement the high rise trend because the waists are in the same place.

I think of the wrap top as a ‘70s star although it featured well before that decade too. There are four types of wrap tops, three of which define the waist:

  1. Classic wrap tops that are hip bone length or longer with a tie at the waist.
  2. Cropped ballet wrap tops that sit on or above the waist. Fits can be body-con, tailored or fluid.
  3. Faux wrap tops that are usually fitted, and sometimes fluid.
  4. Wrap-front tops that are very fluid and surrender the waist.

The collection below showcases the four versions across assorted fabrics, colours, patterns and sleeve lengths.

On to to the pros and cons.

Good

  • Most wrap tops create a sensational V-neckline that works well on shorter necks, fuller bustlines, and broader shoulders
  • They define the waist and streamline the body thereby creating traditionally flattering proportions
  • They are fab on curvy body types
  • They elongate petites
  • They shorten a very long waist
  • They are worn over bottoms so there is no need to tuck or semi-tuck
  • Faux wraps are handy to layer under jackets and cardigans
  • Cropped ballet versions are a slam dunk combination with flared skirts
  • Fluid wrap-front versions have architectural appeal and are a good look for those who are short-waisted and/or want to conceal midsection bits
  • They can look gorgeously soft and pretty

Bad

  • Wrap tops can create an unflattering, impractical and uncomfortable fit over the bust when they’re not cut exactly right
  • V-necklines can be too low and fall open, although you could try a cami or adding a snap
  • V-necklines can be wide and unflattering on those who don’t wear them well
  • The ties of real wraps can be fussy, too long, and get in the way of toppers
  • The tie can accentuate a short waist
  • Wrap-front versions can overwhelm a small frame and narrow shoulders, and slide around the body
  • They sometimes look overly classic

Generally, the wrap top is like the little girl with the curl. When it’s good, it’s VERY good. But when it’s bad, it’s horrid. And that’s exactly how my clients feel about it. The intermittent reinforcement of finding an absolutely fabulous wrap top once in a while keeps the silhouette on their radar.

I don’t wear V-necks well unless the V-shape is created by a collared shirt or blouse, so that keeps me away from most wrap tops. Sometimes the V’s are very shallow or raised at the shoulder neck points which improves proportions for my body type. I also like some of the newer versions with high necklines. I fancy the structure of the tie at the waist and don’t find it fussy. I used to have gorgeous wraps with shallow V-necks made of mesh, and have worn cropped body-con ballet wrap tops with skirts.

When the right wrap top comes my way, I love it. How about you?

Fashion News Roundup: April 2019

Rent the Runway expands into children’s clothing, several new initiatives from H&M, and other style news that caught our attention this month.

Interesting Fashion Quote

I like what Katie Sturino of The 12ish Style says in her Week of Outfits post on Cup of Jo:

“As you can see, I like my colors BRIGHT. Fashion often pushes women — especially plus-size women — to wear black. Like we’re supposed to hide inside that lack of color. I have plenty of friends who do prefer to wear all black or all grey, but that’s just not my vibe. There is no destination when it comes to size. So often women live as if life will start when they lose 10 pounds or if they achieve a certain pant size. The truth is that if you don’t accept your body as you are, you will never get off the merry go round. I just wear what makes me happy.”

Outfit Formula: Light Blue, Black and White

Combining light blue with black and white reminds me of the ‘90s. At least that’s when I wore the palette after the very bright ‘80s. I like how light blue adds a soft, pretty, and unexpected touch to a black and white look. The white adds crispness to the light blue, and the black toughens the vibe.

Think of any way to combine light blue with black and white. Light wash denim and chambray count as light blue, and dark blue can be your black if you don’t wear black. Any shade of white will work. Here are four outfit ideas to get you started.

1. Business Casual

Combine a light blue jacket with a black dress and finish off the look with white footwear. Feel free to create the column of black with a top and pants or skirt if dresses aren’t your thing. Here, the white buttons of the blazer pick up the white of the shoes, which is visually interesting. I’d throw in a white bag too.

Veronica Beard Miller Dickey Jacket

2. Tough Trendy Classic

This is the easiest combination to create because it’s made up of timeless essentials with a good dose of tough spunk. Combine black pants or jeans with a black and white striped top. Add black or white footwear, and top things off with a light wash denim jacket. This denim jacket is oversized and trendy, but feel free to sub it for a fitted silhouette. Add a white, black or light blue bag.

3. Dressing Up Black Bottoms

Combine a pair of dressy black pants with a dressy light blue top and finish things off with black or white shoes. If you wear black shoes, add white through a bag or/and white jewellery. Sub the trousers for a black skirt if that’s more your thing. Or turn things upside down by combining dressy light blue bottoms with a dressy black top.

4. Relaxed Suiting

Combine a light blue suit with a white top and open-toe black footwear. Feel free to add a black belt to pick up more of the black. I’m not sure I’d like this outfit as much with closed black shoes, or on someone who did not have black hair because the bookending is brilliantly effective. Add jewellery, eyewear and watch as desired.

Massimo Dutti Slim Fit Linen and Cotton Denim Trousers

Light blue is a lot more versatile than you think so don’t rule it out as a colour you can wear with just about anything. I wear my light blue bags with a rainbow of non-neutrals and neutrals, and it always works to my eye. That’s why light blue outerwear is versatile, and it’s on my radar.

One of my clients wears light blue footwear to perfection because they bookend her beautiful light blue eyes. It’s and amazing and unique way to pull together an outfit. I chose a pair of chunky light blue specs for another client because she wears a lot of black and white. It’s a flop proof colour palette.

Weekly Roundup: Better than Basic

These items have been winners on my casual and smart casual clients recently. They are simple, but with design detailing that makes them more interesting than a simple essential. Most of the items are neutral, but some offer colour options.

  • &.LAYERED Tie Front Sweatshirt: This knit top looks cuter in person. Better than a simple tee, and less sporty than a sweatshirt. A little flirty and very comfortable. Available in neutrals and stripes. Might run a little big.
  • Frye Women's Billy 70750 Shootie: A fab Spring shootie to lighten and brighten outfits. Great quality and comfy for regular volume feet. After a little breaking in, your feet will thank you.
  • Karen Kane Asymmetrical Twist Front Dress: A flattering and very comfy dress on those who can fill it out. Easy to launder and fab in motion. Comes in black and plus sizes.
  • Rag & Bone Mason Stripe Top: A nice ribbed pullover for cobalt lovers. Despite the stripes and high neckline, it works well on a larger bust. Lovely quality and fab under jackets. Comes in another colourway.
  • Finn Comfort Ikebukuro: An extremely well made and comfortable sneaker for high-volume feet and bunions that need arch support. The chunkiness has a '90s integrity. Available in colours and patterns.
  • Boden Arabella Sweatshirt: A crisp and dressier sweatshirt with a rainbow party on the back as well as on the sleeves. Check out the back! Lovely fluid fit with a curved back hem. Better than basic. It earned a place in my wardrobe because it's quite structured and crisp. It became an instant wardrobe workhorse with my tomato red jeans for very casual days. Comes in other neutrals and a polka dot.
  • Boden Sara Denim Dress: Dress this beauty up with heels and ballet flats, or down with sneakers and slides. Works on a straighter and curvier figure. Elegant length. It's 100% cotton denim with no give or stretch, but it IS quite soft. Runs a size big, so might need to size down.
  • Boden Leonie Ponte Midi Dress: Super soft and traditionally flattering. Gorgeous on a curvy body type. I saw this dress on a US18 with a large bust, and it took my breath away. Elegant and playful. Comes in green. Easy to launder.
  • Boden Wren Biker Jacket: This item was restocked up to a US16 because it flew off the shelves the first time round. It's a 100% cotton moto in a tailored fit with subtle hardware and BLUE. Unique, versatile, well made and flattering. Replaces a denim jacket. Runs a size big.
  • Caslon Luna Pointy Toe Flat: A classic flat with rave reviews that can work on a higher volume foot. Lots of colours and patterns, of which the suede versions are the most comfortable.
  • Everlane The Chore Jacket: A trendy chore jacket with a good fit and at a good price. It's more refined than the average workwear topper, thanks to fab fabric, flat patch pockets and streamlined fit. Comes in neutrals. Read the rave reviews.
  • Donald J Pliner Britini Sandal: A comfy '90s sandal for regular volume feet. If you wear a lot of black and want a Summer update - try this sandal.
  • Madewell Flower Statement Earrings: Flower Power Statement Earring Fabness.
  • Madewell The Brady Block Heel Bootie: These are a repeat style because they're very comfortable, hip, and look great on the foot. Best on regular volume feet. A great way to update for Spring and Summer.
  • Madewell Gingham Peplum Button Down Shirt: A masculine shirt with frilly charm. Lovely quality, fluid fit, and best on a straighter body type. Fun with white bottoms.
  • Topshop Tortoiseshell Long Sleeve Mesh Midi Dress: Mesh dresses are crease-resistant, lightweight, easy to launder, comfortable, and great for travel. This silhouette is structured yet fluid. Quite fitted on the torso and sleeves so you have to be okay with that. A little earthier in person. The lining does not go all the way down the dress, which makes it quite breezy, Might need to size up.
  • Madewell Hillside Daisies Peekaboo Sleeve Midi Dress: A fab '90s inspired dress that works well on a curvier body type. Add combat boots, tough topper or long cardi, and Bob's your uncle.
  • Boden Ayla Jersey Top: Super cute boho-lite jersey top that's 100% cotton and super breezy, easy to wear, and pretty. Dressier and more interesting than a basic tee.
  • SCOTCH & SODA Scotch & Soda Smocked Shirt | Nordstrom: This is the best tie-front top I've seen and fitted so far. The fabric is gorgeous, and the fit is flattering on most body types. Substantial, and a quality piece. The diagonal sleeves work well on a larger bust. Great with skirts. Comes in white on the Scotch & Soda website.
  • SCOTCH & SODA Ruffle Sleeve Tie Front Cotton Dress: Emerald Green Shirt Dressy Fabness. The exuberant sleeves and front yoke detailing make it more than basic. Fab length and nice gently curved hem. 100% cotton.

  • Loft Peplum Open Hoodie: Super cute open hoodie with a peplum party at the back. Comes in olive and grey.
  • Loft Floral Embroidered Sweater: Chilly Spring Sweater Fabness. Runs a size big.
  • Boden Arabella Sweatshirt: A well made and ultra crisp sweatshirt that can be worn as a fun casual top with jeans. It has a longer, curved back that's flattering.
  • Boden Isabella Lace Back Top: Much more interesting than a basic tee, if you enjoy wearing a pretty top. Check out the eyelet party at the back. Comes in colours on the Boden website. White is quite opaque.
  • J.Crew Garment-dyed hoodie sweatshirt: The tapered hem on this hoodie makes it look a lot more crisp and tidy than a regular sweatshirt. I styled it with white pearls, a pastel floral raincoat, cropped jeans and pink sneaks for a client last week, and she loved her refreshed look. We pulled the hood out and draped it over the collar of the raincoat. Looking casually swish in 2019.
