Sit-Down Tests To Ensure Good Fit

I’ve mentioned the importance of doing sit-down tests before you commit to an item of clothing, and it bears repeating. It’s top of mind for me because it was the reason I passed on a potentially fabulous pair of red tartan pants last week.

I was excited to try on these fully lined wool-rich tartan pants from J.Crew after ordering them because they’re just what I want to wear as everyday pants right now. I popped them on as soon as they arrived, and loved them. They fit and felt really good. The waistband fit the small of my back extremely well, which was surprising and no alterations needed. I began prancing around in the pants in front of the mirror — always a good sign — and grabbed tops from my wardrobe to pattern mix with the tartan. I was having fun creating multiple outfits and about to pull off the tags.

Then I remembered to do the sit-down test to ensure that the crotch point, thigh area and waist was comfortable. In less than a nanosecond the fit problem was clear. The high front rise was fine as long as I was standing and striding, but poufed out making the zipper buckle as soon as I sat down. There were multiple creases across my crotch point and belly area due to too much fabric in the rise. When I stood back up, the creases did not go away and looked awful. A little pant creasing is fine, but this was excessive. Unfortunately they were not nearly as good a fit as my other checked J.Crew pants, which have a slightly lower rise. Back they went.

Remember to sit down and move around a bit in clothing before you pull off the tags. Make sure you can drive in outerwear, that necklines aren’t too low, that hemlines aren’t too high, and that the buttons of shirts and blouses don’t gape.

Fab Finds: Winter Warmth

If you’re in the Northern hemisphere, the days are shorter and the temperature a whole lot colder. It’s staying that way until Spring creeps through, so best we wrap up and make the most of it. Here are some tried-and-tested items that will keep you insulated and go the distance. Many are repeat styles that have been winners on my clients and friends over the years, and I own a few of the items too. Browse the colour and size options, and read the reviews. Some of the items are on sale.

1. Uniqlo Heattech Items

Uniqlo has been making Heattech items for years, and they are extremely effective. The brand keeps on expanding the assortment because it’s very popular and wears like iron. The items are made of fibres that are bio-warming, insulating, moisture-wicking, anti-microbial and moisture-retaining. Items come in varying levels of warmth.

Uniqlo Heattech is available as underwear, layering pieces, or as regular tops and bottoms, so be careful when you purchase and style the items into outfits. Don’t purchase Heattech underwear expecting it to be worn as pants and a regular tee because you’ll be disappointed. Conversely, don’t purchase Heattech T-shirts to wear under blouses, shirts and knitwear and expect them to have a smooth and lightweight appearance and feeling. Buy the right item for the right purpose.

Heattech undies and casual pieces can be worn whenever you feel cold or expect to feel cold. They work well on cold Winter walks in the woods, snow, mountains, or at the beach. They are fab for working from home when you get cold at your desk, in cold office and retail settings, camping, or relaxing at home.

I have long Heattech underwear that I layer under my clothes when I’m feeling cold. The same leggings, long sleeve T-shirts and camisoles have been in rotation for ten years. They are extremely thin, smooth, warm, comfortable and unobtrusive. They fit like a glove and feel like a second skin. The tees are fabulous to put under shirts, blouses and dresses when I don’t feel like wearing knitwear. The leggings are great under long skirts and roomier pants and jeans. Sometimes I pop Heattech under my loungewear when I’m feeling cold at home. Many possibilities!

2. J.Crew Oversized Cashmere Wrap

These work equally well as big scarves as they do as wraps draped around your shoulders. They are wonderful to have at your desk for when you feel the chill, and are an ideal travel blanket. They work over sleeveless tops when things cool down at night on warmer days, and are fab to layer over tops with exuberant sleeves that don’t fit into jackets and coats. They make for a great Zoom meeting accessory too.

3. Quilted Puffer Jackets and Coats

Puffer jackets and coats have a signature quilted design with sections that are “puffy” between the stitching. The insulation comes in an assortment of weights and thickness so that you can choose a version to suit your climate. They are filled with feathered insulation or synthetic fibres, both of which can provide a high level of warmth depending on how well they are made and the quality of the synthetic fibres. Fabric fillings vary from goose down and polyester, to recycled polyester.

Puffers are extremely practical, and look fun and fab to my eye. Some are lightweight and packable, while others need their own suitcase. Some versions are more athletic and sporty than others. These days they’ve become a trendy fashion statement, and can be worn with anything.

Puffers can be tailored and come in many lengths. Versions with diagonal and chevron stitching visually narrow the waist and streamline the silhouette. Boxier puffer jackets and coats can make an avant-garde statement. I’ve seen most of these in person, and my clients rock many of the styles. Some of them run big, and others true to size. Make sure you’re wearing the right layers underneath the jacket or coat when determining the correct size. Make sure you can move, walk and drive comfortably too.

4. LINEA PAOLO Velore Colorblock Bootie

I committed to these in white because they are extremely comfortable for feet like mine, which are low volume, bony, quite narrow, with long toes and narrow ankles. They fit so well that I didn’t need to modify them with cushioning insoles. The leather around the ankle is super soft, and the snip toe is on-trend. The low block heel is architectural and NOT black on the white pair, which is hard to find. Click both styles to see the unique colour-blocked effect at the back. Awfully refined, and dressy in a relaxed way.

Outfit Formula: Easy Winter Skirt

Here are some comfortable outfits for those who enjoy wearing skirts in colder weather. Some of the looks are for those who experience milder winters. Also, editorials don’t always show how to layer up and stay warm in an outfit. Use these looks as a base and add items like hosiery, HEATTECH undies, coats, puffer jackets, scarves, and headgear for insulation.

Some of the outfits are dressier than others. Choose a colour palette that works for you.

1. Relaxed Casual Flare

Combine a casual patterned flared midi skirt with a fluid pullover that picks up a colour in the pattern. Semi-tuck the pullover, or leave it out. A short cardigan that’s buttoned all the way through works well as a pullover too. Add casual flat booties or tall boots. Feel free to add fun visible socks that are in the same palette to the short boots option. Pop an easy coat, jacket or coatigan over the top. Here I particularly like the addition of the slate grey boots, pattern mixed scarf, and crossbody bag.

Seasalt Lysbeth Coat

2. Sassy Black Sandwich

Sandwiching an outfit together with black top and footwear is an effective styling strategy for most solid skirts. Pick any colour and “sandwich” it with black. It also works well when there is a black component in the pattern of the skirt. Here, the electric blue is marvelous with the black support act and black hair of the model. Try sandwiching with navy, grey, white, tan and shades of brown if black is not your thing. I see sheer black hosiery and taller black boots too.

Eloquii Velvet Column Skirt

3. Plaid, Tights and Sneakers

Shorter checked and plaid Winter skirts in straight and A-line silhouettes are a classic. My petite clients and friends wear them particularly well. They are often worn with black opaque tights, boots, and pullover, which is a slam dunk (more black sandwiching.) But here, I like the addition of the rusty red opaques and black sneakers to change things up. Hi-tops are another option, or wear boots. Matching the colour of the opaques with a top is another way to go.

Uniqlo Wool Blend Mini Skirt

4. Cosy Sequins

Create a fun juxtaposition by combining a dressy sequin skirt with a cosy and roomy pullover. A pullover with a high-low hemline tends to add a little structure. Finish off the look with dressy and tailored footwear that works with the palette. Choose another type of dressy skirt if sequins aren’t your thing. Add jewellery, watch and eyewear as desired.

Layered Dainty Necklaces

I barely wear jewellery, but love this look. The individual necklaces are dainty, mostly metal (any type) and neutral in colour. Some of them have refined pendants, and some don’t. To my eye, this is an interesting, pretty, minimally-maximal, and fresh way to wear jewellery. It also ensures that you wear your jewellery.

Sometimes the layering is achieved by a single necklace comprised of multiple strands, so the layering and remixing is done for you. So easy, like Kozakh shows when you hover over their necklace sets. Alternatively, you can layer multiple necklaces yourself. Find between two and five daintier necklaces at staggered lengths and arrange them to your liking. I’ve found that I prefer the vibe when at least one of the necklaces has a pendant because it visually anchors the look and creates a bit of structural dimension. A variation in link shape looks really good too, and by all means mix metals.

Kozakh Madison + Serpent Necklace Set

Kozakh Locklyn Necklace

Layered dainty necklaces work well with a low neckline that showcases skin. But they can work as well inside an open shirt/blouse collar, or V-neckline. And over a crew neckline where the necklaces rest on fabric and not the skin.

At first, I thought that the vibe was for those who don’t wear earrings, or at least keep their earrings simple and small. After all, the necklaces should create a focal point and not compete with other accessories. But I changed my mind as soon as I saw clients and friends rock the combination of big earrings and layered necklaces. The layered necklaces can complement other accessories instead of fighting for the star spot.

I don’t wear earrings, but wear one of my short white pearl necklaces daily. Sometimes I layer them with my monogram “A” necklace or pearl pendant. The pearls are quite chunky, but somehow exude a dainty vibe. The pendant necklaces are very dainty. The exact items are shown in the collection. I wear the double layer of necklaces in open shirt collars, or over crew, boat and slash necklines. I also wear them with red specs, and don’t feel it’s too much going on.

G-Star, founded in 1989, was one of the first denim manufacturers to make ethical and sustainable production a priority. They committed to annual sustainability and responsibility milestones in 2006, which was way before most other retailers. They created a responsible supply chain, and regularly publish a detox report. G-Star is extremely transparent about where they source their materials and how items are produced. You can read about that in great detail.

G-Star is committed to the concept of “circularity” which means using sustainable materials, clean chemistry, turning waste back into resources, and ensuring that garments are designed for reuse. They haven’t figured it all out yet, but are getting there. For example, they are well on their way to creating biodegradable plastic. The brand also philanthropically empowers global communities by setting up and funding educational programmes, and creates partnerships with organizations that are aligned with their own sustainability milestones. G-Star regularly track their carbon footprint, which they’re constantly trying to improve.

Denim production is especially hard on the environment, which is why G-Star specializes in raw denim that is untreated, undyed and unwashed. They took the more eco-friendly denim process and made it into a unique, coveted and cool look. Fabulous! I’m much impressed with how aware the brand is of its potentially devastating impact on the environment, and its passion to minimize this impact.

Prices are competitive, especially on sale. Sizes run from XXXS to XXL across mens and ladies. Sizes US000 to US22 on the ladies’ side, and US26 to US40 on the men’s side. The brand offers a range of inseam lengths, especially for Team Tall (probably because the Netherlands is one of the tallest countries in the world). Fits run TTS. There is room to be more size inclusive by offering more larger sizes.

Hubs Greg is a G-Star die-hard and very big fan. It’s always our go-to store when we are in the Netherlands. It’s Greg’s look, colour palette, and the brand meets his needs for exceptional quality and comfort that goes the distance. Most of Greg’s extensive outerwear capsule is from G-Star, and they make his favourite hoodies. He does well with their jeans and cargo pants too. Sleek, tailored, interesting, neutral, sporty, edgy, and very comfortable. The items last and look pristine for ages.

I’m not a hard-edged, tough, neutral, or casual dresser, yet I’ve had my fair share of fun G-Star items over the years, which is a testament to the brand’s versatility. I thoroughly enjoy them when I’m in a neutral mood, and remix the look with my dressy, soft, colourful, retro and crisp wardrobe. The Dutch market adores dark blue so you’ll always find that in the brand’s assortment, which is fab when you prefer dark blue to black.

What I appreciate most about the sustainable brand, is the glorious quality of their hip outerwear, and the trendier design integrity of the jeans. They offer beyond basic jeans silhouettes — especially for menswear — which is unique when it comes to ethical and sustainable denim at the moment.

G-Star is always on my radar when I visit the Netherlands because of Greg. Since denim is the trendy part of my style, their silhouettes catch my eye, and every so often I see a dark blue jacket or coat I like too. I highly recommend their items if you see stuff that can work for you or others in your life. I’m also proud that they are a Dutch brand who was an ethical and sustainable retailer long before it was a thing.
