My Formal Wear Shopping Strategy

It’s been ages since I shopped for the dressiest items in my wardrobe, but that’s what I’m doing this year. I’ve budgeted for it, and will add it to my style goals. My formal frocks and skirts are either too short, impractical to wear, or have bitten the dust. It’s high time I refreshed my formal wear capsule, which is in itself a refreshing process after years of focussing on smart casual wear.

We don’t have formal occasions on our calendar so far, but I’m shopping for the items now because I seldom find KILLER right formal wear at the right price when I need it urgently for an occasion. I almost always compromise in some way with the silhouette, colour, quality, or price when I’m forced to find something under pressure. By taking my time this way, I can relax into the process, enjoy it, browse and experiment to my heart’s content, and most importantly, not compromise. When I see items that are more than what I want to spend, I can wait till they go on sale. Sometimes patience is all important when it comes to wardrobe and style.

I’ve already had great luck with this formal wear shopping strategy. I nabbed the perfect-for-me navy lace-embellished shirt dress from Rebecca Taylor at a very good price last month. It’s more relaxed than the formal wear that I usually wear, more fluid and A-line in person, a great length, beautifully refined and dainty, covered yet sheer, and very comfortable. It fits perfectly, and looks fab with my old block-heeled gold loafers and big vintage Yorkie brooch. I don’t have plans to wear the dress soon, but it’s a versatile item that I can pull out when I need it.

I’m also on the lookout for items like a big swooshy tulle skirt, a white or navy tuxedo of sorts, a long formal gown, a bright cocktail dress, and a dressy gold bag. These items will find me when they’re dead right, just like the lace dress. In the meantime, I’ve ordered the navy tulle P.A.R.O.S.H. skirt, which has potential. If it works, I can dress it down with a casual top, sneakers, denim jacket, and wear it more frequently.

There is some risk to minimize with this strategy. It’s important not to shop for an imaginary lifestyle. Instead, I’m purchasing ahead of time so that I’m optimally and calmly prepared for the occasions that I know will crop up in future. My sartorial preferences for formal wear are quite stable, so the items will have longevity. But I do need to make sure that I choose silhouettes and colours that I won’t tire of quickly.

Trend: Bucket Hats

A bucket hat is a hat with a narrow, downward-sloping brim. They were traditionally made of unwashed raw wool and worn by Irish farmers and fishermen in 1900 as protection from the rain. The lanolin from the unwashed wool made the hats naturally waterproof, and therefore ideal for Irish weather. Over the years, these lightweight hats became popular as fishing hats, for sun protection, for warmth, or as a fashion accessory. In the ‘60s, the look was popular with the Mod subculture. In the ‘80s and ‘90s, the Kangol bucket hat was popular in the hip-hop scene.

We see a sprinkling of solid and patterned bucket hats every season because they are an iconic classic. But recently they’ve gained momentum and are having their fashion moment. Bucket hats can be worn year round across a range of weather-appropriate fabrics. Wool, shearling, tweed, sherpa, leather, pleather, corduroy and flannel for cold weather. Cotton, crochet, straw, canvas, and cotton blends for hot weather. Weatherproof fabric for rain, and recycled fabric is popular too. Here are some examples.

Some of the brims are wider and floppier than the more traditional stiff and narrow brim. Most of the fits are structured but some are oversized. Some of the shapes are round, and others more square. Some versions are reversible. Most bucket hats are easily folded and washed, which means you can pop them into a bag or large coat pocket, or travel with them. They are handy to have in weatherproof nylon in rainy Seattle when you don’t have a hood or umbrella. The narrow brims don’t offer a lot of sun protection, but they do offer some protection. In the right fabric, they will keep your head quite insulated too.

I don’t have a bucket hat, but I like them. If I came across one that I liked, fit well, and didn’t blow off my head, I’d wear it as a warm-weather hat. How about you?

Elegant Skirt and Art Print Sweater

A new outfit from Greetje Kamminga of No Fear of Fashion, whom we introduced to YLF in October 2017.

Greetje’s one-of-a-kind sweater with the rose stem print looks like a work of art, and steals the show. She’s semi-tucked the sweater into a full midi skirt that drapes beautifully. The skirt has a subtle self-pattern that, together with the sheen of the silky sweater, adds luxe lustre. A bright red belt picks up the vibrant rose colour, and accentuates our blogger’s waistline. Tucking the top and turning back the sleeves tempers the volume of the oversized sweater. Greetje pairs her elegant dressy outfit with chunky white lug-soled booties; an on-trend casual juxtaposition. The white footwear echoes the light sweater, and bookends Greetje’s blonde hair. The red bucket bag matches her belt, as do the statement drop earrings and Greetje’s sassy red lipstick.

Weekly Roundup: Not So Casual

Many of my clients are adding dressier items to their wardrobes as they refresh their styles. Generally, people seem to have an abundance of casual wear, workout wear, loungewear, and wardrobe basics at this point, and are in the mood for a change. As they resume their travel plans, attend events, and work back in the office, wardrobe purchases are following a new set of priorities.

This resonates with me as I refresh with dressier items and replace some formal wear. On that note, this week’s list of top picks are a little dressier, although I’ve thrown in some casual items too. Be sure to browse the colour and size options.

  • Rebecca Taylor Lace Shirtdress: This interesting navy lace beauty made it into my wardrobe as a more relaxed formal piece. It looks fitted, but it's fluid and A-line in person. VERY comfortable. It's also longer on me, which is my preference. The straps of the slip dress can be adjusted, which means you can wear it with a regular black bra. It has the daintiest and most refined lace collar, and pretty rouleau loop buttons on the sleeves. I shorten the straps of the slip dress so that there is a broader sheer lace edge at the bottom. I wear it with low-heeled gold loafers and big gold vintage Yorkie brooch. I LOVE it, and know it will come in handy when I need a dressy dress that isn't that formal.
  • Tommy Bahama Ella Twill High Waist Denim Miniskirt: A fab casual and polished denim skirt that looks particularly good on petites. Works well on a curvier body type.
  • Fuzzi Tulle Mesh Flower Print Boat Neck Sleeveless Drape Front Flounce Hem Dress: A beautifully fitted frock with a fab bit of flounce. Gorgeous in motion. Comfy stretchy mesh. Moulds to the contour of the body working as well on a curvier and straighter body type. Forgiving front waterfall drape detailing. Size up.
  • P.A.R.O.S.H. Nullex Pleated Tulle Skirt - Farfetch: A fun navy tulle skirt that does not pouf out too much. Great length that is easily hackable. Great drape, and delicious swoosh factor. It's on its way to me. It might be THE one.
  • Boden Oversized Linen Sweater: An easy and elegant linen sweater that is fluid, versatile and comfy. The sleeves are a unique elbow length and flare in a very subtle way. Comes in red, navy, and a green stripe.
  • Boden Cuffed Tapered Pants: These drapey paisley beach pants have a fab tropical vibe. Relaxed in an elegant way. Very comfy. They are 100% viscose which usually gives me pause, but their crinkled texture makes them more robust and crease-resistant. Comes in red and air-dry. Better after a press too.
  • Knot Front Pleated Skirt Dress: I was blown away by how STUNNING my client looked in this dress. Goddess Fabness. Plenty of length for Team Tall, works on a larger bust, and comes in four solids. Comfy and pretty. Might need to size up.
  • Ron White Kadesha Leather Loafer: Fably refined with lots of pizzazz. Best on a wider foot. Comfy and chic.
  • JAGGAR Leaf Print Midi A-Line Skirt: Botanical Midaxi Skirt Fabness. Easily hemmed, very soft, lovely drape, and lightweight.
  • Anne Klein Floral-Print V-Neck Midi Dress: A fantastic dress for Team Curvy who enjoys blue and V-necks. POCKETS.
  • Vince Ribbed Midi Skirt: A ribbed tube skirt that is gently A-line and substantial in a warm shade of olive. Comes in black and cream.
  • Ted Baker London Lizzbel Quilted Joggers: If you like to wear joggers, keep these quilted ones on your radar. They look polished, interesting, have a cute sweatshirt to match, and can be remixed with dressier jackets.
  • Sam Edelman Lue Lug Sole Combat Boot: Lilac Weatherproof Stompy Boot Fabness. Comfy, and comes in grey with a grey lug sole.
  • Donna Karan New York Handkerchief Skirt: Shark Bite Black Midi Skirt Fabness. Dress it up or down. Might run big.
  • M&S Collection Pure Cotton Midi Shirt Dress: A tiered frock with a shirt dress integrity makes for an interesting hybrid for Team Shocking Pink. This is 100% cotton, machine washable, and relatively inexpensive. I'm stalking my size.
  • Banana Republic Essential Trench Coat: Cobalt Trench Coat Fabness. The lining is 100% cotton too.
  • Ted Baker London Satrice Zebra Stripe Cotton Blend Top: An on-trend tee with poufy sleeves in a greyed shade of lilac. The sleeves stay put when scrunched. Substantial fabric.
  • Reiss Tia Pintuck Pleat Pants: Trousers that are gorgeously drapey and luxe with on-trend front vents. The rise is quite long, but that is offset by the fluid trouser silhouette. The back elastic adds comfort and creates a good fit. Particularly good on curvier figures.
  • Polo Ralph Lauren Slim Fit Cable Cropped Polo Shirt: If you like to wear very fitted polo shirts, this sleeveless one with cable detailing and side vents might be of interest. 100% cotton. It's cheeky, short, and runs small. Lovely quality. Fab on petites. Comes in navy. The citron is not as bright. More of a butter yellow.
  • French Connection Lilly Mozart Cotton Sweater: A fab cotton sweater that is pretty lightweight, neat and tidy, launders easily, and a little shorter than regular length. Comes in bubblegum pink.
  • Hobbs Myla Floral Dress: A pretty sleeveless midi for Team Navy and Lilac. Beautifully made and tailored. Timeless and versatile to pull out when you need a dressy frock. Make sure you like to wear high necklines if you try the dress.
  • AllSaints Rita Devore Semisheer Blouse: An oversized sheer blouse that looks smashing with a black tank, bra, crop top, or bra top underneath. Very boxy, and looks good semi-tucked.
  • AVEC LES FILLES Shrunken Nylon Bomber Jacket: If you're looking for a short and very pristine black bomber jacket, try this one. Gorgeous fabric and fab tapering fit at the hem.
  • DKNY Women's Brook Messenger Crossbody: Sporty, practical, well-made, polished, and for Team Silver Hardware. Comes in solid black.
  • AllSaints Brooke Puffer Bomber Jacket: A slouchy bomber for Team Lilac. It has a high-low hem and fun side vents if you click the links. Lovely quality.

Outfit Formula: Relaxed Tulle Skirt

I’ve been trying to find the right navy tulle mesh skirt that won’t break the bank for years. I saw a great one at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale five or six years ago, but passed because I prioritized other purchases. I wish I’d got it because it’s the type of item that is hard to find when you actually need it. I hope I find a fab tulle skirt this year because I LOVE the way full skirts swoosh and move as you stride. Here are some lovely ones.

Tulle mesh skirts are dressy, and can be combined with a dressy support act for a formal occasion. But they can also be worn more casually by styling them with relaxed items like a graphic tee, moto jacket, denim jacket, tie-front shirt, cropped sweater, fashion sweatshirt, hoodie, combat boots, cowboy boots, flat boots, riding boots, loafers, gladiators, and sneakers. I intend to wear my tulle skirt in a relaxed way when I eventually get one. I’m excited about twirling around it already.

On to some creative tulle skirt looks with a relaxed integrity. Choose any colour palette.

1. Moto Jacket, Knitted Top, and Heels

Combine a tulle skirt with a matching fitted or fluid knitted top in a pattern or solid. Tuck or semi-tuck the top, or leave it out if you prefer those proportions. Add dressy shoes like pumps, sandals, or tailored boots. Top off the look with a tailored moto jacket that works with the palette. Personally, I like short motos combined with full skirts, but feel free to wear a longer one.

2. Skirt and Sneakers

Combine a tulle skirt with a fluid shirt or blouse. Tuck it in or knot the front to create a waistline. Scrunch or roll the sleeves. Add sneakers that work with the colours of the skirt. Here, the white sneakers match the white of the top. The pink in the sneakers matches the pink of the skirt. The pink baseball cap playfully matches the skirt. I’d add a light blue denim jacket as a topper if needed.

3. Graphic Tee, Suspenders, and Sandals

Combine a tulle skirt with a tucked solid tee, or graphic tee. Add a decorative pair of suspenders that work with the palette of the outfit. Here, the skirt has detachable straps, but you can add suspenders instead. The on-trend platform sandals add drama and a bit of height. Boots can work well too. I can see a pile of pearls adding a fab touch.

4. Fluid Cardigan and Dressy Shoes

And last, a slightly collegiate vibe. Combine a tulle skirt with a solid or patterned tee or knitted top. Tuck or semi-tuck the top for a bit of structure. Layer a boxy and longer cardigan over the top. Leave it open to showcase the top. Scrunch the sleeves if you like. The low contrast between the three clothing items creates an elongated effect. Finish off the look with dressy shoes like these ankle-strap wedges. The dark shoes bookend the model’s hair and add a little shine. Add jewellery, watch, and eyewear as desired.
