Dressing Up My Apple Watch

I got an Apple watch three years ago, and to my husband’s surprise, haven’t looked back. I wear it all day and every day because I LOVE its features and functions. I’m a dressy dresser who used to wear a formal gold watch every day. I don’t have a sporty style, and I’m not a sporty person, yet I’ve gotten used to the casual and sporty aesthetic of my Apple Watch. That said, I dress it up to work with my outfits.

Here’s how I temper the sporty vibe of my watch.

1. Add a Fancy Strap

I have a rose gold Apple Watch because I bat for Team Gold and do not mix metals. At this year’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, I bought a dressy Michele strap in white silicone and rose gold to give my sporty watch a more formal look. I chose white to match my workhorse white pearls. White also works best with the palette of my wardrobe.

The fancy strap was one of my best purchases of 2022. The Michele silicone is much better quality than the Apple Watch silicone I’ve had in the past. I’ve worn it non-stop for six months and it hasn’t stained, discoloured, or needed a clean. It looks brand new. It’s extremely robust, seems to repel dirt, and is very comfortable.

2. Adorn With Arm Candy

I wear my watch on my left hand, along with one of my white pearl wedding rings and an assortment of pearl bracelets. I like the way the white and gold of the watch neatly matches my pearl rings and bracelets. I wear either one of these combinations daily, and it does not change. No more, and no less. I don’t wear nail polish so my fingers always look the same too. To my eye it’s a versatile combination that works with every one of my casual and dressy outfits. And I don’t tire of the look.

Over to you. Do you also dress up your smart watch? If so, what’s your strategy?

Review of My Style in 2022

Before finalizing my style goals for 2023 I like to check in on how well I did with my goals for 2022. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, 2022 was a great year of style and shopping. Fashion and style is a stress-free and fun component of my life. My style needs are satisfied, my wardrobe is in tip-top shape, and I’m a lucky fish.

I’ve fine-tuned my shopping strategy by purchasing most items online. That way I can get exactly what I want from retailers who understand my needs and deserve my business. I’ve focussed on brands that tend to work for me, and re-introduced others that went off my radar. I’d forgotten how well Elie Tahari works for me, how beautifully made their items are, and am thrilled to have the brand represented in my wardrobe again. I’ve also become better at pouncing on items on my wishlist when the price breaks and flash sales hit. If I manage to get my size and colour on sale, bonus. If I miss out, it doesn’t matter. There will be something else as good or better at some point.

As I go down my list of general goals for 2022, it struck me how many of them have become second nature at this point. For example, the following are all things that I do automatically now. There’s no need to remind myself to stick to them.

  • Amp up Authenticity
  • Stay True to my Style Aspirations
  • Make Manageable Sustainable and Ethical Wardrobe Decisions
  • Express my Style Through my Favourite Colours and Patterns
  • Explore the World of Fun and Practical Pants
  • Milk my Signature Style

There were two general goals that could do with a little discussion:

#6. Adding Elegant-to-Me Touches to my Style

I’ve thought long and hard about how outfits create elegance to my eye, and developed a loose checklist that I’ve applied to my own looks. On some days I felt sufficiently elegant, and other days quite the opposite.

I realized that my short, sharp, dramatic, and very neat and tidy pixie that showcased my ears attributed greatly to my feeling elegant in an outfit. I feel attractive when I expose my ears, and miss seeing them covered with longer hair. I’ve been growing out my pixie for a year because I desperately wanted a big change, and I’m sticking with the decision. It’s been a slow and frustrating grow-out. Lots of awkward layers, many bad hair days, and far from a neat and tidy ‘do. My hair has finally grown into a less awkward style, but the length isn’t that flattering for my face shape. It’s also a tad too short to tuck comfortably behind my ears. It needs to grow another four inches for it to be where I want it to be. I’m hoping that I’ll feel more elegant in my outfits when I’ve reached my longer hair goals. Time will tell. Here’s what it looks like now. On to another year of growing my hair!

On top of growing out my hair, I stopped adding platinum highlights. I’m back to my natural colour which is a dark honey blonde. No grey yet. I’m adjusting to the darker blonde, and not entirely sure how I feel about it yet. Forgoing chemical treatment for a year has drastically improved the condition of my hair, and I’m enormously enjoying that side of it. Hubs Greg loves the natural colour, which helps me like it more too.

#9. Rebuild my Formal Wear Capsule

My old formal frocks, tops, and skirts were either too short, impractical to wear, uncomfortable, or have bitten the dust. So I added a refresh of my formal wear capsule to my list of style goals. After years of casual and smart casual, this was in itself a refreshing thing to do. I’m thrilled with what I’ve bought so far (collection below). I’ve worn the red velvet pants and loafers quite a bit. I’ve worn the navy tulle skirt, silk horsey cardigan, and sparkly sweater a few times too. These items make me very happy and I LOVE them. I’m looking forward to wearing my navy lace dress and white polka dot blouse when the weather warms up.

As far as my specific goals went (#8 on my list for 2022) I managed to achieve all of them, except embellishing my blush capsule. Instead, I embellished my shocking pink capsule, which was a better idea anyway! Some of the same shopping goals will go back onto my 2023 list because I could do with more of some of the items. I’m prepping that list now, and will share it soon.

Happy New Year!

2023 sounds awfully futuristic! Or maybe I’ve seen too many sci-fi shows. It’s been twenty-three years since we welcomed the new millennium. This year marks my thirtieth year in the rag trade. Hubs Greg and I celebrated twenty-six years of marriage. And twenty years ago we moved to the US, and settled in Seattle. Time flies when you’re having fun.

Fun is the operative word, and that’s my wish for our style journeys this year. The fun we can have with fashion and style is not to be underestimated. It can be a welcome distraction when we’re stressed, a therapeutic hug when we’re sad, and a confidence boost when we’re down. Whatever it is that makes fashion and style fun, light-hearted, and meaningful for you, I wish you busloads of it for 2023. Along with lots of laughter, good health, interesting adventures, and countless mornings of waking up with joy in your heart.

Happy Holidays!

Greg, Sam, Jo and I will be spending Christmas and New Year’s at home in Seattle. Sam and Jo start getting excited when the tree goes up the day after Thanksgiving. When the decorations are up and the lights go on, they play, shout, and tear around the loft, spreading even more good cheer than normal. They are extremely curious about the presents under the tree. They check in on them daily, making sure nothing has happened. Surprisingly, they resist the urge to tear them open. So far, all of the presents are intact, albeit shuffled around by nosy noses.

Like most people, we have little holiday traditions. We take Sam and Jo on long city walks to see the lights and festivities. We get dressed up and go to our favorite Japanese restaurant on Christmas Eve, and come back early to watch Christmas movies. We’ve been invited to spend Christmas Day with dear friends. Things get rowdy and rambunctious at the Cox Castle as Sam and Jo play with their new toys relentlessly. Our quiet Christmas is over.

For the rest of the week the music is blaring while the oven is baking with all sorts of yummies that I only make once a year. We potter around at home, puzzle, tackle some home projects, catch up with friends and family abroad, take Sam and Jo out for outdoorsy adventures, relax, slow down, and try to not think about work and the usual stresses. We so look forward to the end of the year!

We at YLF wish you happy holidays, safe travel, peace in your hearts, slick style, good eats, fun festivities, memorable moments, alone time if you need it, and lots of laughter. We will be taking a break until the new year. Regular blog posting will resume January 3.

Six Festive Holiday Outfits

We checked in with our bloggers to see what they are wearing for special occasions and holiday festivities this year. The answer: all kinds of amazing outfits, of course! From lustrous velvet to the traditional Christmas red worn in unexpected ways, here are six of our favourite looks.

Suzanne

This is a wonderful example of Angie’s Loud Plaid outfit formula. The cinnamon, black, and white plaid is a great take on the traditional plaid that never goes out of style, while the cut of the suit with its cropped kick flare trousers is completely on-trend. Suzanne has paired her suit with a black Modern Classic wool double-breasted maxi coat. The long coat over the cropped pants feels fresh and playful. The gold buttons echo the gold rim on the blazer’s oversized black buttons, and add a touch of shine. Black super chunky lug-soled Chelsea boots add a bit of hard edge that cleverly juxtaposes with the dressy elements and the frilly sweater collar peeking out over the blazer. Red nail polish and lipstick, and gold hoop earrings and cuff bracelet complete the look.

Julie

Now this is a party dress if I ever saw one! Julie went full-on formal glam with a show-stopping feather-and-tulle strapless gown in fire engine red. The fitted bodice reins in the volume of the full maxi skirt with delightful swoosh factor. Our blogger has layered a crisp white button-down underneath. The strictness of the fully buttoned-up shirt provides structure and interesting irregular outfit juxtaposition, while the short puffy sleeve adds back in some flirty fun. Gold block-heeled sandals bring dressy festive bling to the party. Julie repeats the gold with a wide cuff bracelet and big cocktail ring. Her pink ombré bag ties in perfectly with the textures of her dress, and her lippy also matches her dress perfectly.

Cathy

Velvet trousers are a classic for the holidays. Here Cathy puts her own spin on the look by going with an earthy colour palette that is striking with her beautiful red locks. The “Old Hollywood Glam” pleated full-length wide leg trousers flow elegantly and have a gorgeous lustrous shine. She’s combined them with a floral print blouse with ruffled collar and sleeves. The gold thread running through the black and brown floral print adds subtle shine, that is picked up by Cathy’s arty pendant necklace and the chain strap on her black quilted bag. Tucking the blouse lengthens the leg line from the hips up, while the black logo belt accentuates our blogger’s waist and adds structure. Peachy lipstick complements the colours in the outfit.

Susanne

This happy explosion of colour* reminded me so much of Angie’s recent Solid Simple Bright outfit. It radiates the same impactful exuberance that will make you the life of any party. Susanne is sporting an untucked slim-fit mustard turtleneck and magenta full-length wide legs. This colour combo alone is dynamite, but she ups the style quotient by pairing it with a luxe two-toned maxi coat in magenta and red. The coat is fully reversible, and here the magenta lapel and sleeve cuffs subtly match the trouser colour. Gold metallic sneakers add a Sporty Luxe element. Susanne’s trademark blunt ear-length boxie and red lipstick, statement square specs and red cuff bracelet are all that’s needed to finish off the look.

Kim

Hard Edge Meets Sparkly Glam in Kim’s festive skirt look. Our blogger has tucked a simple black top into a knee-length silver sequin pencil skirt that glimmers and sparkles in the light. Dressy, white pointy-toed pumps in combination with the black top form a strong graphic element that works well with the outfit’s vibe. The surprise piece here is Kim’s oversized collarless leather moto jacket. The taupe doesn’t match but works splendidly with the rest of the colour palette, while the studs on the front panels and shoulders are an unexpected way to add extra bling. Neutral lipstick and black sunnies, and Kim is ready to go.

Ola

This is a spectacular example of Angie’s Fun Holiday Pant Suit outfit formula! Ola is wearing red nylon tuxedo-stripe track pants under a crisp white button-down tunic that is left untucked. As a topper, she picked an on-trend long-line blazer in red faux leather. The sharp, tailored shoulder adds structure, while the matching reds of the jacket and pants create vertical integrity. White pointy-toed stiletto pumps lengthen the leg line and bookend the white shirt. Keeping the playful oversized earrings and pillow-quilted bag in the same red family adds even more impact. Ola’s gorgeous curls and smile are the icing on the cake.

Such a gorgeous set of varied holiday outfits. Each uniquely suited to the wearer and the occasion. What you are wearing this holiday season?
