Party Outfit Formula: Dressed Up Jeans

Dressing up a pair of jeans for the holidays or for an occasion is quite popular with my clients, although non-denim items like dresses, skirts, trousers, and suits are more popular. The great part about this type of outfit is the ease, casual factor, and comfort level when you enjoy wearing jeans. It won’t break the bank when the items are in your closet already.

The most important components are the dressier top, and the optional topper. This collection shows some examples.

On to the components of the outfit. Choose any colour palette.

Formula

Jeans + Festive Top + Dressy Topper + Dressy Shoes + Dressy Bag + Bling

Jeans: They can be dressier or more casual. Dark uniform washes without rips and tears are the dressiest type of blue jeans. Trouser jeans are great too. Black jeans or coated jeans are another way to go. Choose them in a silhouette that works for you.

Festive Top: Choose a blouse, sweater, or knitted top depending on how cold or warm you need to dress. Keep it DRESSY if you are not going to layer it under a dressy jacket. If the topper is the dressy part, you can wear a basic top underneath it, or even a tee.

Dressy Topper (OPTIONAL): If the top is dressy and insulating and you’re not into wearing jackets, leave off this layer. If the jacket is the star of the show, wear something simple underneath to let it shine. Or double up and wear a dressy top with a dressy jacket.

Layering a sparkly cardigan over a sleeveless blouse is an option if you find jackets restrictive.

Dressy Shoes: Complete the outfit with dressy shoes that can be any type of heel, boot, or flat. Metallic and patent are favourites. It sounds counter-intuitive but I’ve seen sequined sneakers and metallic cowboy boots work well with the vibe too. Add socks and knee-highs for warmth. Wear festive socks if they make a visual statement in the outfit.

Dressy Bag: Choose any type of fancy small bag to match the outfit. Shoulder, crossbody, satchel, bucket, clutch, clutch with a strap, belt bag, or wristlet.

Bling: Keep the extras subtle or pile on the bling. Think sparkly hair accessories, brooches, belts, shimmery make-up and nail art too. All good.

Here’s a gorgeous example of the outfit formula in neutrals. Dark and cropped relaxed straight jeans are combined with a simple black pullover. A sparkly tan jacket that tops it is the dressier part. Black embellished pumps match the black of the top and bookend the model’s hair. I see a small black, red or gold bag. Gold earrings and red lipstick are the festive finishing touch.

Slouchy Sweater Dress

A new outfit from Elle of Elle Blogs, whom we introduced to YLF in April 2015.

Elle has built this minimal and casual Fall outfit around a midaxi sweater dress in on-trend mocha brown. The calf length and relaxed fit create a modern slouchy silhouette without overwhelming her 5’2” frame. The vertical ribbed knit and subtle side slits draw the eye up and down and create vertical integrity. Elle has paired the cosy dress with white high-top platform Converse sneakers that add a sporty touch. The stripe on the sneaks cleverly echoes the stripe in the blue and white striped sweater nonchalantly draped over her shoulders. The neutral brown palette is continued in the straw tote with its dark brown handles. Oversized sunnies and Elle’s trademark red lipstick add glam polish.

Weekly Roundup: Pants, Tops and Toppers

These items have been winners on my clients and some of our forum members. Noticeably, the high comfort factor and good fit of Liverpool Los Angeles bottoms is going down well with clients who enjoy ease and some stretch in their bottoms. The fits tend to effectively skim over curves, have room in the midsection, and are winners to Zoom or travel in all day. The rises aren’t that high either. Click through the colour and size options, and some items are on sale.

  • M&S Collection Striped Sparkly Blouson Sleeve Jumper: If you like to wear silver, stripes, and grey, this dressier jumper might be of interest. It's a repeat style that went down well with clients last year. It's fluidly tailored, short, and works well with higher waist bottoms, skirts, and petites. Elegant and comfortable. Comes in blues.
  • COACH Rivington Waterproof Chelsea Rain Boot: I have these in cream and they are AWESOME. They are the most polished, chic, and dressy rubber rain boots I've had. They run narrow and short so size up. Super soft and comfy for low-volume feet. They don't slide around my heels either. Puddle proof. Comes in colours and are on sale.
  • Treasure&Bond Faux Fur Pom Beanie: This hat is amazing for SMALL heads, so if you have a child's size head like I do, and battle greatly to find a beanie that fits in the adult department - try this one. It comes in two more neutrals. I have the cream. I adore wearing gigantic pom-poms on my head. Feels festive and fun.
  • Lauren Ralph Lauren Faux Leather Trim Quilted Coat: This is a beautifully polished quilted casual coat with an equestrian vibe that Ralph Lauren does so well. It's crisp and amps up a relaxed look. It's a rich shade of wine which makes it more unique than black. Fluid, yet streamlined, and has side entry pockets.
  • The Office Of Angela Scott Miss Button Derby: Dressy Heeled Oxford Fabness. Impeccable quality and a rich shade of brown. A little stiff to begin with, but does soften after a bit. Comes in black.
  • Boden Cashmere Puff Shoulder Sweater: This comes in eight colours and is offered at a discount fairly regularly so watch for the price break. It's gently fluid, not clingy, awfully pretty, on-trend, very polished and versatile. Feels gorgeous against the skin. I have the neon orange, and like wearing it with shocking pink, blues, and all sorts of reds.
  • Boden Smocked Yoke Detail Top: Draped Voluminous Fabness. It's swingy in a charming way. Dressy yet relaxed. Super easy and comfy to wear over fitted jeans, pants, or a pencil skirt. Comes in teal.
  • Boden Dart Detail Satin Fitted Shirt: The satin of this blouse is thick, warm, and substantial. At first I thought it was fleece-lined, because it's unexpectedly cosy. It's semi-fitted, and has a retro '70s pointy collar. Comes in red.
  • LIVERPOOL LOS ANGELES The Real Boyfriend Roll Cuff Jeans: Comfy relaxed boyfriend jeans that work well on a wider waist.
  • LIVERPOOL LOS ANGELES Microprint Pull-On Ankle Straight Leg Knit Pants: Super cute pull-on pants that are KNITTED but look woven. Very comfy. Fab for those who like to wear lower rises and elastic waists.
  • LIVERPOOL LOS ANGELES Kelsey Plaid Ponte Trousers: These are a rare pair of chocolate and black plaid pants in a substantial knit that comfortably glides over curves. Rise not too high. Comes in a charcoal plaid too. Size down.
  • Zara Kaia X Zara Coated Jacket: A collarless coated black denim jacket with sheen that does a good job of adding the tough to an outfit. Not too long, not too boxy, and versatile if you wear a lot of black. Party at the back too. Click the link to see it.
  • Loft Paisley Tie Neck Swing Dress: It you like to wear berry tones and cool colours in a paisley pattern, this might be of interest as a tunic worn over bootcuts or as a dress. Comes in petites. Great on a larger bust and/or broader shoulder line.
  • Dansko Bel: A supportive clog with a penny loafer integrity. Very comfy, works for wider feet, and comes in black.
  • White House Black Market Mid-Rise Everyday Soft Denim Bootcut Jeans: These jeans have worked on a range of body types because they create a flattering fit that glides over the contour of the body in substantial fabric. Rise is not too high.
  • DKNY Women's Cold Shoulder Mock Neck Sweater: Cold Shoulder Sweater Fabness. The cut-outs on the shoulder are in an interesting position, and generally the sweater does not feel as bare. Comes in red and white.
  • White House Black Market WHBM Velvet Editor Blazer: A fab velvet blazer that works well on a curvier figure. It's more grape in person than in the photo. The red and pink rose lining is GORGEOUS so the blazer can be worn with a fun turned-back sleeve to showcase the lining. It has SHARP shoulders with biggish shoulder pads so pass if that is not your cup of tea.
  • BCBGeneration Plus Size Double-Breasted Bouclé Walker Coat, Created for Macy's: A fab coat that comes in five colours. Gently cocoon in silhouette, and lots of room in the sleeves. Versatile in length, and sleeves are fairly easy to shorten.
  • Talbots Wool Bouclé Long Coat: This is a gorgeous classic coat with practical side entry pockets. Works well on a larger bust and broad shoulder line. Runs a size big. The turquoise is less bright in person. The coat is NOT scratchy, but it's not soft and smooth either because it's bouclé. A little less bright in person.
  • White House Black Market Faux Fur + Knotted Pearl Scarf: I got this because it's fun, pretty, warm, super soft, does not irritate my nasal passages, and I had a cream scarf on my shopping list. You don't need to thread the scarf end through the pearl detailing because there is another loop that works even better to secure the scarf in place. For that reason, I might cut off the pearl decoration, but am unsure.

Outfit Formula: Orange Crush

I read the results of a research paper that showed how orange was the least liked colour in the world. Personally, I love a bright, rich, Dutch and almost luminous orange. I find it mood-lifting, versatile, and flattering against my complexion. I love eating oranges, the smell of oranges, and enjoy orange-flavoured food. Marmalade is by far my favourite jam. I bat for Team Orange.

If you bat for the same team, here are some outfit ideas. Feel free to use burnt orange or a rusty cinnamon instead of bold and bright orange.

1. Orange, Aqua, Olive, Brown, Gold

This palette combines unexpected colours, and I find it beautifully creative. An aqua pullover is tucked into a pair of brown wide leg plaid trousers. The aqua stands alone and is not repeated. It’s adorned with a large olive and brown necklace. The brown is repeated in the pants and the olive is repeated with the gloves. A quilted orange coat tops off the outfit. Orange stands alone as a colour too. The outfit is completed with a gold bag and jewellery. I see brown or gold shoes in the mix.

I LOVE wearing orange with blues like turquoise, navy, and light blue. Here I’m wearing a column of orange with a turquoise bag that matches my specs. I finished off the outfit with white pearls, an oatmeal coat, and cream boots.

Orange, Aqua, Olive, Brown, Gold

2. Orange Pattern

If wearing solid orange feels too much, wear orange in a patterned dress, skirt, top or scarf. Here’s an orange patterned dress with reds, creams, and browns. It’s completed with red boots and bag that pick up the red in the pattern. Easy! Brown or cream boots and bag would work well too.

Orange Pattern

3. Orange, Shocking Pink, Red, Brown

My other favourite way to wear Dutch orange is to combine it with bright pink, all sorts of reds and burgundies, and a peachy toffee. I’ll finish off the outfit with white or cream boots and bag, or throw in an orange or shocking pink bag to match. Sometimes, I’ll wear red boots, and more recently, taupe boots. This collection shows ways to combine these colours.

This collection shows items from my own wardrobe that I combine in a similar way:

4. Orange with Brown

And last, orange is lovely with dark brown, which you can wear as a solid or in a pattern like a check, tartan or plaid. Here, a very fluid orange pullover is paired with brown wide leg pants. The pants have a chocolate brown side seam. Dark brown or taupe boots would have been my choice of footwear, and a dark brown coat to top things off. Add jewellery, eyewear, and watch as desired.

Trend: Loafers

Loafers in many styles and colours are a mainstream trend. Lug-soled, platformed, flatformed, wedged, block-heeled, pointy-toed, square-toed, round-toed, tasseled, fringed, dressy, casual, adorned, simple, metallic, sporty, embroidered, chunky, and refined, so take your pick. Iconic classics like Gucci horse-bit loafers, penny loafers, and slipper flats are also having their fashion moment.

Loafers are easy to wear, slip-on shoes, which makes them appealing. Their slip-on nature can make them harder to fit because they fall off your feet when the fit isn’t perfect. This is especially true when you have wider front feet and narrow heels. Some find loafers overly flat and dainty, but these days chunky styles and heeled versions are also in good supply. If the hardware across the vamp bothers you, choose a style without hardware.

Loafers are a transitional, high-vamped shoe. They are warmer than sandals, slides, clogs, and mules, but not as warm as boots. They offer similar insulation to low-top sneakers, Mary Janes, pumps, ballet flats, and oxfords. They can be worn with hosiery, knee-highs, socks, and leg warmers to prevent cold ankles.

They are gaining momentum with my clientele and friends because of the large assortment of styles and vibes. There’s a loafer style for everyone. The chunky styles are popular because they don’t look as classic, preppy, or flat. Flatformed, platformed, block-heeled, and wedged versions offer a bit of height, and support high arches.

Loafers are dressier than sneakers, and more substantial than ballet flats. The idea is to wear them with anything — much the same as a classic pair of low-top fashion sneakers. Combine them with casual and dressier pants, jeans, joggers, shorts, skirts and dresses. Some prefer to wear them with pants and jeans because of their high vamp.

I LOVE loafers. I’ve worn them my whole life and will continue wearing them whether they are on-trend or not. They are my shoe and, in light neutrals, a wardrobe essential for my personal style. I also wear them in brights. I find them very comfortable, versatile, supportive, and easy to wear. They are relatively easy to fit as long as they are narrow with high vamps. I prefer my loafers refined, classic, dressier, and with heels of up to an inch. My love for horses makes the horse-bit versions a must, so I have several pairs of those with gold hardware. I also have light blue slipper flats that I wish I had duplicated, old red pennies that are about to bite the dust and need to be replaced, and a very old heeled gold pair for dressy occasions. Here is my current loafer collection.

Where I might differ to most loafer lovers, is that they are warm and hot-weather shoes for me. My Summer style would not function without a pair of white loafers. Aside from the dressy gold version, I don’t typically wear them in transitional or cold weather. I like to wear them with bare feet, and very occasionally knee-highs and hosiery. I don’t wear them with socks.

Over to you. What do you think of the loafer trend, and do you wear loafers? If so, which types of loafers are your favourites?
