Outfit Formula: Simple Knitwear Layers

Combining a pair of bottoms with a sweater is a super easy outfit combination, and one I’m fond of too. There are ways of making the easy pairing look more interesting and less minimal if that’s your cup of tea. Here are three examples to get you started.

1. Pullover Plus Shirt

Here a fluid shirt is layered under a fluid striped pullover. These types of top layers are easy to wear and style when the items are roomy. Otherwise there’s a lot of friction and pulling to get the layers in place and into a comfortable position. Layering a sweater over a slippery blouse is even easier. The cuffs and shirt hem are left peeking out to become a feature of the outfit. Sleeves are scrunched to offset the baggy layers. The layers are paired with wide cropped jeans and finished off with a classic pair of loafers. Hoop earrings add a glam and polished touch. Add a bag to match.

Pullover Plus Shirt

Here are more examples. One is a vest instead of a pullover, and some skirt looks too.

2. Cardigans

Cardigans have V or round necklines, come in shorter and longer lengths, and can be worn un-buttoned, or buttoned through. The examples below showcase the assortment, and are well worth a closer look. They’ve been worn over layering tees, and dresses. Paired with skirts, shorts, jeans, and casual pants across slim and wide silhouettes. And worn with buttoned and un-buttoned. Footwear ranges from dressy to casual.

This version layers a voluminous poncho-esque wrap cardigan over a blouse with a slit front neck. The shorter sleeves of the cardigan allow the long sleeves of the blouse to peek through. The blouse is tucked into wide leg jeans, although feel free to wear it out. White sneakers match the white blouse. I see a pink or black bag complete the look.

3. Twinset

Last, a less simple layered look which combines a co-ord patterned top and cardigan to create a complemented twinset effect. The volume of the top is belted to show a structured waistline, while the cardigan drapes over them. The structured waist further tempers the width of the wide leg trousers. Black and white shoes match the tops and black belt. Add jewellery, watch, bag, and eyewear as desired.

Bra Facts

Bras can be an important part of our style so I’m repeating a previous post about bra capsules with some small updates. Replenishing bras is not enjoyable, so sometimes we put it off. If that’s true for you then hopefully this post inspires you to do so.

Bras are no longer a style prerequisite, but wearing a supportive bra can make your clothes look better, smoothing out the silhouette and accentuating the female form in a sculptural way. Personally, I’m also more physically comfortable wearing one.

Bra fittings are tedious, and finding the perfect bra can be difficult. Sometimes you need to settle for a bra that is almost dead right just because you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, or your size is in short supply. But don’t give up. Fits and fabric technology improve over time so you’ll eventually find what you need.

Here are some facts about bras and bra fittings that bear repeating:

1. Bras Are Expensive For Good Reason

I’ve visited bra factories in Cape Town, Paris and Hong Kong, and it’s an absolute eye-opener. Bras are highly complex items made of many, many intricate pieces that are hard to sew together because they are small, delicate and stretchy. Skilled labour comes at a price.

2. Many Women Wear The Incorrect Bra Size

Most women go too wide in the band and too small in the cup. For example, they’re in a 36B, when they should be in a 32D. Most of a bra’s support comes from the band, so that needs to be snug, structured, sufficiently broad, and in the right position on your back so that it does not create “back muffin top”.

Also, don’t assume that you are an A-cup when you are small in the bust. Chances are high that you need a larger cup size and a smaller width in the band. Get a professional bra fitting and make sure you’re wearing the correct size bra.

3. Cup Size Increases With Band Size

The cup size is not the same across sizes. It increases as the band width increases. So the cup size on a 38D is larger than the cup size on a 30D. That’s why a person who wears a 30D looks like she has a regular size bust, while the person with a 38D looks like she has a larger bust.

4. Bra Sizes Are Not Created Equally

Like clothing, bras in the same size across various brands can fit very differently. Some fits run wide, while others run narrow. Some cups offer more coverage than others. Some silhouettes enhance the size of the bust, while others minimize. Since we carry the bulk of our breast tissue differently, this is GREAT news because it gives us a greater variety of fit.

5. Bras Can Be Altered To Fit

Bras, like clothing items, can be altered to fit more perfectly against the body. Women who have had breast surgery can have bras altered or made to fit their new bodies.

6. Fit Bras With Clothing

Before you commit to a new bra, try it with your tops. Make sure you like the shape, texture and feel when you wear clothes. Are they creating the smooth look that you want them to? If you wear a camisole often, make sure you fit your cami over the bra too.

7. Buy Bras Online When You Are An Uncommon Size

You can buy almost any bra size online, so that’s your best bet when you’re an uncommon size. You’ll also find a larger assortment of colours and silhouettes in your size online.

8. Buy Bras That You Can Return After Wear

This is especially important when you have a larger bust and find it hard to find a comfortable bra. Things feel great in the dressing room, but aren’t so great when you wear the bra longer. Rubbing, digging, sliding off, and creeping up is not so fab. The option of returning a worn bra so that you can find something more suitable is handy.

Generally, you’ll need at least six everyday bras across a range of colours that work for your skin tone and wardrobe. You’ll need sports bras if you work out, and perhaps a few special bras for a particular cut of clothing or for occasions.

I LOVE bras because wearing wonderful underwear boosts my body image and makes me feel better in my outfit. I would have a larger assortment if my size was more common, but feel fortunate to have found perfect bras from Simone Perele. I like them lacy and pretty, with no exceptions.

These are my current favourtites:

Like all wardrobe basics, bras require regular replenishment. And an update in size, style and fit when you gain or lose weight, or have had breast surgery. Make 2024 the year for getting wonderful bras, or bralettes, and feeling fabulous in them if you don’t already. It makes a visual, physical, and emotional difference. Feel free to post your bra buying challenges in the comments section, and let’s get them sorted.

Leave No Retail Stone Unturned

Wardrobe gems can be found in unexpected places. When your go-to options let you down, consider shopping in new and unlikely stores, departments and brands. You never know when or where you might find that perfect item for your style.

Shop With an Open Mind

We all have our favourite brands and retailers because they work for us. But sometimes they change their fits, quality or vibe, making them less suitable than before. At the same time other brands and retailers can evolve in ways that make them just right.

Your needs are also changing over time. So let brands and retailers start afresh at the beginning of every season. And if something catches your eye somewhere outside your normal shopping haunts, give it a try. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Make Shoes Comfortable with Moleskin Padding

Moleskin padding is a cushioning tape that you can cut into strips and stick on the inside of shoes, right on the spots where they rub your feet. Simply cut the Moleskin tape to the right size, remove the adhesive strip, and stick into position.

I find Moleskin particularly useful to stick on the inside of footwear tongues that rub the vamp of my foot. I recently did just that with two pairs of oxfords that would rub my skin raw in those two tiny spots on the tops of my feet. It eliminated the rubbing very effectively.

In the past I have placed Moleskin on the inside of the shafts of boots so that they don’t rub my shins as I stride. It has also saved my pinky toe from being rubbed red. Moleskin is a good shoe doctoring tool to have on hand.

Fringe Trend: Grommet Belts

A grommet belt is a belt with decorative eyelets, typically in leather or faux leather. I often call this an “eyelet belt” and some retailers do too. If you bat for Team Belt, you might enjoy wearing one.  The eyelets have see-through holes so the visual effect is different to a studded belt. They make a statement, adding shine and textural interest to an outfit. They mostly come in neutrals and the colour of the hardware varies.

Grommet belts vary in width and length. They can be narrow or wide, and positioned on the waist or lower on the hips. Some are long enough to double up around the waist. Or you can loop the end back through the belt with a knot at the buckle, ‘80s style. Wear them with pants, jeans, shorts or dresses.

I got a cream grommet belt last year from Anthropologie. It became an instant workhorse and it’s one of my favourite belts at the moment. I love the polished effect and finishing touch it adds to an outfit. It kicks many of my jeans and trouser outfits up a notch. So much so that I added the cinnamon one this year. Eventually, I’d like to get a pair of cinnamon loafers, boots, or flats to match.

Although grommet belts are having a fringe fashion moment, they are an iconic classic to my eye, much like a Western belt. They have stylish longevity, which is another reason I’m fond of them. I’ll wear my grommet belts until they fall apart.
