Fashion News Roundup: August 2016

Sonia Rykiel has passed away, J.Crew is coming to Nordstrom, a documentary about Japanese denim, and more fashion news that caught our attention in August.

Fashion Fact

Sonia Rykiel, often dubbed the Queen of Knitwear, not only invented the “poor boy” sweater — a ribbed pullover with high cut arm holes and a shrunken fit — but also was one of the first designers to feature words and motifs on sweaters, inspiring generations of women to make a statement.

Chic Summer Boho in Denver

Carolina Hellal hails from Colombia and currently lives in Denver. She documents her fresh, chic and crisp style over at Chic Talk. She mixes up casual and dressier outfits with pizzazz and is currently loving boho looks. Our blogger also adores statement shoes, likes a dramatic sleeve, and is into bare-shoulder styles. Piles of arm candy and lots of rings are part of her signature look.

Crisp Romantic Boho. The elasticated smocked waist on Carolina’s dress complements her curves, and creates volume on the skirt part at the same time. It billows as she walks, which creates a kind of “bloomers” effect. Fun! The ruffle sleeves and collar, smocked waist and shadow-stripe provide textural interest. So do the animal print bag with gold chain detail and the suede lace-up sandals with stacked heel. Opting for khaki instead of black is more unexpected, and the colour complements Carolina’s olive skin fabulously. Our blogger’s wavy locks add to the romantic, carefree vibe of the look. The sandal laces tied in a pretty bow finish off this romantic boho Summer look to perfection.

Carolina adores a dramatic sleeve and fell hard for this blue and white bell-sleeved smock top. Aren’t the scalloped hems amazing! Flared jeans work well styled with a bohemian sensibility, so this pretty top with lace cutouts was just the ticket for this ‘70s vibe look. The jeans are fitted on the thigh, which balances out the voluminous top and flared hems. Nude high-heeled sandals elongate the leg line. Carolina’s white shoulder bag with black piping complements the colour palette beautifully. Her dark hair also creates a crisp contrast with the light blue. Fun finishing touch: our blogger loves to match her nail polish to the colours in her outfit, so she went with light blue for this occasion.

A Chic Boho look that shows petites can rock maxi dresses and large floral patterns. Bare forearms and the deep V-neck on Carolina’s beautiful kimono-sleeved wrap dress create structure. The self belt and asymmetrical hemline effect (created by the wrap style) also rein in the volume. The dress’s black background complements our blogger’s dark pulled back hair. Dainty gold necklaces fill in the V-neckline. Skin showing through low-contrast cream cage sandals helps to show more leg. The tall wood block heel gives our blogger a boost of height. Oversized sunnies, a two-toned crossbody, white watch, and dainty gold jewellery are the pretty finishing touches.

’70s Rocker Boho. Carolina found her airy woven blouse and black embroidered vest on two separate occasions. Both have glittery silver thread running through them, and have the same boho vibe, making them the perfect match! Semi-tucking the blouse with billowy sleeves tempers the volume and elongates the leg line. The circular embroidery on the beaded and sequined vest makes for fun pattern mixing with the stripes in the blouse. The long tassels provide tons of boho textural interest. Blue skinny jeans tucked into black suede block-heeled ankle boots streamline the look and also add length. A pile of arm candy and rings on several fingers is signature Carolina. Mirrored sunnies, a black crossbody and our blogger’s dark ombré locks are the finishing touches.

Carolina is loving bare-shoulder looks at the moment, and this strapless jumpsuit with pale blue leaf print fits her beautifully. The wide-leg style is playfully retro and glam. The low-contrast pattern and tailored fit up top keep it from not overwhelming our petite blogger. Wooden platform studded sandals play up the retro Summer vibe even more. Carolina’s two-toned mini crossbody picks up the nude colour of the footwear. The large tassel is a fun decorative touch. A dainty necklace and a mix of bracelets and rings in rose gold finish off this soft Summer look.

I call this one Boho Coco. The above-the-knee tweed dress in deliciously bold colours is undoubtedly the star of the show. The mix of vibrant colours looks very modern and makes the outfit pop. The boxy fit on this sheath dress with elbow-length sleeves makes it easy to move in. The long fringe paired with suede lace-up sandals and bare legs creates a chic boho vibe. The khaki sandals work as a neutral while adding extra interest at the same time. A light brown saddle bag adds a casual touch. The chain strap detailing and Carolina’s pearl bracelet are a fun nod back to Miss Chanel.

When One Item Catalyzes a New Style Direction

A new style direction can be inspired by all sorts of things. Runway shows, fashion magazines, trend reports, bloggers, an outfit we see on a mannequin at a retail store, a friend’s style, and street style, are all style influencers. The street style in my favourite cities tends to influence my style direction the most, as do trend reports, and what I see at retail.

Sometimes, a single item that I see in retail can be the catalyst for a new leg of my style journey. For example, seeing a red ruffle front blouse at Banana Republic made me want to add a more Romantic integrity into my style. After its purchase, I’ve added five more flouncy tops to my wardrobe, embraced flared bottoms wholeheartedly, and left my hair naturally wavy.

Seeing a ripple dot silk scarf at Nordstrom made me want to experiment with Graphic items. Since the scarf followed me home, I’ve added two pairs of jeans, a pair of trousers, a clutch, and a pair of booties with a graphic vibe to my wardrobe (half of these items were birthday gifts.)

When thinking about how to add a Graphic integrity back into my style, I thought that I would only pursue it if I could keep the vibe of my outfits Soft and somewhat Modern Retro. It just so happens that having the Romantic support act in my wardrobe was just what I needed to achieve the look that I wanted. I christened the short side trip on my style journey “Romantic Graphic”, just for fun.

Over to you. Has a single item that you’ve seen and bought in retail been the catalyst for a new leg of your style journey? If so, what was the item and how did it evolve your style?

Romantic Graphic for Summer

I’ve softened my style considerably over the last eighteen months, which has felt right in every way. I’ve reduced the Tomboy, amped up the Pretty, thrown in the Retro, and rekindled my affection for Romance. More recently, I longed to bring back a smattering of Graphic without losing the soft vibe of my outfits, and it’s been a fun challenge. Blushing with black is one way I pulled together a more graphic look in a gentle and romantic way this Summer. I’ve worn this outfit to work with clients, and might wear it to an upcoming wedding rehearsal dinner.

Water

Water

I’ve been all over cropped straight and flared jeans because the silhouette has changed the landscape of my wardrobe. Most of my outfits look trendier and on point when I wear this style so it has become a wardrobe essential. Cropped flares and straights are practical year-round for a Seattle climate, making them all the more appealing. I’ve got the silhouette covered in denim, which meant that replicating it in dressier fabrics was in order.

Side

Full with Bag

Enter Derek Lam’s cropped flared trousers in black. I instantly fell in love with the fabric of these pants because they’re thick, rigid in a comfortable way, and glisten in the light. They were a perfect fit and length on the legs, but overly roomy on the hips and waist. An easy alteration made them fit perfectly, and was well worth the expense. I like the way the fabric and fit feel against my skin, and the high rise doesn’t cut into my waist. I can dress these pants up and down, so they’re versatile as well as dressy.

Side

Full

I have an army of blouses, pullovers, jackets, coats and shoes that work with these pants, they are that easy to style. For their first outing, and to create the romantic vibe, I chose Club Monaco’s ruffle back sweater in blush to pair with them. I LOVE this pretty top, which became an instant wardrobe workhorse. It’s gorgeously sheer and delicate, making it drape like a dream. The fabric feels luxurious and crisp. The swingy silhouette is fun in motion and breezy to wear on a warm day. The party of flounces at the back of the top pulls at my heart strings and makes the top look interesting from the back and side. And the high neckline and long sleeves are right up my alley. I chose a white tank to wear under the top because it makes the blush look richer. I scrunched the sleeves for a hot weather look.

Close

I like to include a bit of white in the outfit when I wear pastels with black, because it softens the harshness of the combination against my pale skin. Enter my two-toned black and white wedge pumps that I bought in Tokyo five years ago. I haven’t worn them for a while, but I never stopped loving them. Those awfully narrow low-vamped straps are unique and work well with my low-volume feet. The length of the pants at two and half inches above my ankle bone makes wearing low-vamped footwear with cropped pants sufficiently elongating to my eye. (The heel helps too, of course.) The pumps are great with cropped black pants because of the repeated black in the colour block. The white has the added advantage of bookending my hair and adding a little graphic touch.

An old black satchel with digital white pattern adds the third graphic touch, and picks up the white of the shoes. Retro Ray-Ban sunnies prevent me from squinting in the sun, but indoors I’m wearing my bright green specs all the way. Silver watch and wedding ring are all I need in the jewellery department as I save my pearls for another day.

Sky - Back

Sky

I’m thrilled with the outfit proportions and fashion trends over the last few seasons because there’s finally ample variety. There’s something for those who enjoy boyish dressing, classic style, rock ’n’ roll or hard edge, and there’s something for those who prefer to keep it soft and pretty, bohemian, sporty, arty, eclectic or theatrical. You can make your current sartorial preferences work no matter what they are because there is no one way to be stylish. As a result I’m happier with my wardrobe than ever.

Ensemble: Transitional Black, White & Grey

I was helping my client Karen prepare a capsule for an upcoming trip to Europe, and this outfit was my favourite. We combined a pair of white flared cropped jeans (that we cut to a shorter length at the start of the season), with a roomy black lightweight pullover, a grey maxi cardigan, black peep-toe booties, checked scarf and black bag. Here are very similar items in a collection. In fact, the cardigan and the shoes are the exact pieces.

The rendition on the left is what we put together for client Karen, while the rendition on the right is a version with blue jeans instead of white. Choose a neutral palette of black, white and grey. Note that silver or grey animal print can be your grey, and any shade of white will work.

Here are the components of the ensemble:

Trendy Jeans: Choose a style of trendy jeans in white or blue like straight or flared crops, cropped jeans with staggered hems, or a streamlined pair of culottes.

Top: Choose a tee, knit top, shirt, blouse or pullover in black or white that works with the jeans and wear it untucked.

Maxi Cardigan: Layer a straight and angular, or cocoon-shaped long cardigan in black or a shade of grey over the outfit. You’re after a longer length cardigan for a more dramatic effect.

Footwear: Choose peep-toe booties or regular ankle booties with high or low shafts in black, grey, snakeskin or silver.

Accessories: Finish off the look with a black, white or silver bag. Feel free too add a scarf in the palette of the outfit. Add jewellery, eyewear and watch as desired.

Ensemble: Transitional Black, White & Grey

You can substitute the jeans here for a pair in grey or black and work the rest of the outfit into the palette. Grey jeans, white top and black cardigan could work. Or black jeans, white top and grey cardi. Take your pick.
