Outfit Formula: Spring Cobalt

Cobalt blue is a favourite with some of my clients and friends, who are delighted to see more of it this year. It’s a strong blue that has been in short supply for years. If you like it, nab it when you see it. It could disappear before we’re ready to see it go.

If you like to wear cobalt in the Spring here’s some outfit inspiration.

1. Black and White

One of the easiest ways to wear cobalt is to combine it with black and white. Or choose black OR white. Here’s a version with black. Pair a cobalt top with a black support act and you’re done. Add a black or white bag to this look, and a topper if you need it. Or wear cobalt as a bottom with a black or white top. Add black or white shoes and a bag to match.

Here are more examples:

2. Green and Light Blue

Cobalt looks lovely with greens and light blue. Here, an avocado blouse is tied at the waist over a cobalt midi skirt. The look is completed with light blue sandals and a bag to match. Emerald, lime, or olive green can work instead of avocado if that’s more to your taste.

3. Cinnamon

Cobalt looks fresh with an earthy cinnamon or toffee. Here a column of cobalt is created with cobalt pants, and a patterned cobalt blouse. A cinnamon sleeveless trench coat tops the lot, allowing more cobalt to come through by exposing the sleeves of the blouse. A cinnamon bag matches the trench coat. White sneakers add a Sporty Luxe touch. Add brown shoes if that’s more your thing.

On the right is an example of cinnamon pants paired with a cobalt blouse, and completed with brown sandals.

4. Pattern Mixed

The outfit speaks for itself. A cobalt patterned blouse and skirt are worn together to create a two-piece dress. They are the same pattern. A scarf in a sister pattern is added to the look. A colour-blocked bag that matches the palette completes the outfit, along with ivory slides that pick up the ivory in the pattern. Punchy!

And this one made her laugh. She adds: “I bought an orange one for DS#2 (he uses it all the time). FWIW, he wanted one because he was getting hip/back discomfort from carrying a wallet in his back pocket. I got a navy one for myself this spring!”

Make It Personal

What looks good on you and makes you feel fabulous is always in style. If certain items and outfit combinations work for your lifestyle, climate, sartorial preferences, and current state of mind, then wear them regardless of the trends.

Style is About You

It is natural to consider the audience for your outfits. But you should focus more on your own feelings than what other people think. Select a few people from your life whose opinions matter to you and seek their input when you need it.

Fashion and style influencers can be great sources of ideas and inspiration, but their opinions matter less than your own. Feel so great in your outfit that you can forget you’re wearing it, and happily get on with what life has to offer.

Technicolour and Statement Kicks

Style enthusiast and boutique owner Melodie Stewart documents her outfits on Instagram. Her style is fashion-forward, quirky, and exuberantly joyful. Melodie loves dressing in technicolour, and has an amazing collection of playful socks, eye-catching specs, and kicky kicks.

Melodie Stewart - 1

This is a fab example of Angie’s Flared Skirt and Sweatshirt Outfit Formula. Melodie has combined a full, pleated midi skirt with an oversized sweatshirt with abstract art print. Wearing the longer welted top untucked over the skirt creates a dropped-waist effect. The vibrant red of the skirt is subtly echoed in the art print, while the blue in the print is picked up in our blogger’s quirky oversized circular sunnies. Black chunky-soled booties add Hard Edge and bookend Melodie’s sassy short ‘do. A tiny bag that matches the footwear completes the look.

Melodie Stewart - 2

Melodie dresses down a spiffy Kelly green pantsuit with a bright patterned sweater and multi-coloured sneakers. The tailored blazer adds structure and juxtaposes cleverly with the playful vibe of the chequers-patterned crew-neck sweater. The neon green in the sweater doesn’t match the Kelly green but does tie the colour palette together. Nonchalantly cuffing the straight leg trousers adds a casual touch, and showcases all the colours in the sporty sneaks. The lilac parts echo the purples in the sweater. Melodie’s small structured black bag makes a second appearance, and also ties in with the sweater. Finally, peach-rimmed sunnies match the peach streak in our blogger’s hair.

Melodie Stewart - 3

Even when dressing in black, Melodie throws in a pair of colourful statement kicks. She has tucked a fitted button-down into a tiered and flared midaxi skirt with polka-dot tulle overlay. The polka dots add a playful touch, while the tulle adds a bit of romantic dressiness. The strong shoulder on the on-trend long-line blazer creates structure, while the longer length draws the eye up and down. Our blogger amps up the playfulness with casual colourful sneakers and eye-catching neon socks. A silver studded clutch, stud earrings, and white futuristic statement sunnies finish off the look.

Melodie Stewart - 4

Melodie dresses up a pair of mid-thigh ripped denim shorts with a button-down tunic and long-line blazer. The white tunic shirt adds crispness, and ties the look together by matching the white in the sneaks and the frayed bits on the shorts. The tailored chartreuse blazer adds structure and cheerful colour. The tunic and blazer are the same length, and end at the shorts’ hemline, thus eliminating any cutting horizontal lines. Statement sneaks are Melodie’s trademark. Here she’s picked a pair with emerald laces and coordinated her socks with the laces, which creates visual harmony. Silver bracelets and necklaces, and a beautiful pair of transparent-rimmed specs are the accessories of choice.

Melodie Stewart - 5

I call this “paisley with a punch and a half“. You rarely see paisley tops in this particular colour combo, and it’s absolutely delightful. Melodie has buttoned her tailored shirt all the way up, which adds a touch of strictness that is in fun contrast with the vibrant reds, oranges, fuchsias, and purples. Tucking the shirt into the trendy high-waisted trousers lengthens the leg line from the waist down. The tapered trousers echo the red in the paisley pattern, and make this playfully polished outfit pop even more. Chunky-soled monk-strap loafers and patterned nylon socks ground the look and book-end Melodie’s dark hair. Mirrored black sunglasses, gold earrings, and neutral lippy are the perfect finishing touches.

Melodie Stewart - 6

With the mix of bright colours, patterned mini skirt and white booties, this entire outfit is a delightful nod to early ’90s fashion! Melodie has semi-tucked a relaxed-fit turtleneck sweater into a green and black checked mini pencil skirt that ends just above the knee. As a topper she’s picked a Modern Classic single-breasted wool midi coat in a neon green that clashes enthusiastically with the bright orange sweater. It doesn’t match the darker green of the skirt, but does relate to it in an on-trend way. The white pointy-toe booties that fit neatly on the leg add a crisp disco element to the look. Dark raspberry lipstick and a multi-coloured mini backpack also don’t match the rest of the colour palette but add eclectic visual interest.

I can’t wait to hear what you think of Melodie’s brilliant outfits! Let us know in the comments, and be sure to visit her Instagram for lots more outfit inspiration.

Three Reasons for a Regular Footwear Assessment

Here are three reasons to review your footwear twice a year or more. I do it for each of the two major seasons. It doesn’t take too long, because people tend to have fewer pairs of shoes than items of clothing.  Shoes are also easier to pop on and off as you try them on.

1. Comfort and Fit

This is the most important reason to do a regular assessment: comfort and fit. That includes rarely worn occasion shoes, footwear that has fallen out of favour, and shoes stashed away in other areas of your home. Shoes can become uncomfortable over time, because our feet change as we age. Even size and width.

The shoes themselves might have changed. It is common for shoes to stretch out into the wrong size. I recently passed on two pairs of boots that have stretched out at least a size, and are no longer wearable.

You also might incur foot injuries that permanently change the type of shoes you enjoy wearing. I fractured my pinky toe eight months ago. It’s fully heeled, but the injury has changed the tolerance levels of that one toe. I had to pass on two pairs of shoes that continued to aggravate it.

2. Spruce Up and Repair

The assessment is a good time to wash sneakers and laces, polish leather, remove scuffs, have heels resoled, respray with weatherproof spray, and fix damaged footwear. Some footwear will be beyond a spruce up and repair, and those pairs simply need to go. Dusting off rarely worn footwear that continues to hold a place in your wardrobe is satisfying too.

3. Fill Holes and Prevent Duplications

Taking stock helps you make more informed future purchasing decisions. It prevents unnecessary duplication and identifies potential wardrobe holes. If you love to wear on-trend shoes, like some of my clients and friends, it’s a time to ponder which footwear trends you’d like to add to your wardrobe, and which to pass on.

If you love footwear, you will thoroughly enjoy this process. Looking at and after these lovelies will spark joy and satisfaction. Those who are less interested in footwear might find it a chore. Either way, feet are important and deserve your care. That means making sure that your footwear capsule comfortably reflects your needs.
