This vibe is about wearing a hoodie under a jacket or coat, taking the hood out from under the topper, and featuring it quite prominently in the outfit. The visual effect creates a statement collar of sorts.
The hoodies can be of the very casual sweatshirt and T-shirt variety, or a little dressier in a wool blend or cashmere. Hoodie fits can be anything from oversized to gently fluid. The toppers can be jackets or coats, dressy or casual, and in any colour or pattern. Some jackets have built-in hoodies, or dickey hoodies that are detachable. The combinations are endless. Here are some good examples.
You can wear a thicker hoodie under a roomy coat, but need to keep the hoodie streamlined under dressier jackets. A hooded T-shirt can work too. Fluid-fit hoodies in substantial but not too thick fabrics are versatile. Creating a high contrast between hoodie and topper is the usual way to go, because it makes the hoodie stand out. But feel free to create a lower contrast.
I love this look and vote YAY. I think it’s interesting, sporty in a less casual way if you wear dressier toppers, and is comfortable to boot. I like all renditions from super casual to smart casual, and the interesting Sporty Luxe juxtapositions you can throw together too.
I have a few sweatshirt loungewear hoodies, but those aren’t used to create this look. Instead I prefer to add a dressier touch with two more refined hoodies. One is a cashmere stripe, and the other is a funnel neck that gives the impression of a hoodie. Both have very neat necklines that keep the look polished. I wear them under my dressy and casual coats and jackets and add my pearls. I wear jeans, dressy pants, and a few skirts for bottoms. I’d like to wear a hoodie under a suit with fashion sneakers, but don’t have the right components yet.
I see a lot of very casual hoodies layered under casual toppers on the streets of Seattle. It’s like a uniform for many people, including hubs Greg. I see the dressier and Sporty Luxe versions less frequently, but they make their way to the streets too.
Over to you. Are you a yay or a nay for wearing hoodies under toppers?
