Joanna Mastroianni’s Tribute to Iris Apfel

Interior designer and fashion icon Iris Apfel was the inspiration for this designer’s collection. Iris herself sat front row and I had to do a double take when I realized it was her. WOW. This is such a meaningful message. We live in a fashion and style world that is obsessed with youth. Yet a designer who shows at New York Fashion Week makes a 91 year old fashionista her style muse. That’s brilliant.

Joanna Mastroianni’s designs are based on Iris Apfel’s flamboyant, colourful and theatrical style. If you’ve seen photos of Iris, you’ll instantly pick up on the similarities. For example, Iris wears a lot of black with brights like red, emerald green and peacock blue. She also wears metallics like copper, bronze, gold and pewter, all of which we saw in the collection.

The first thing that pops into my head when I think of Iris’s style are her oversized specs. After that, I think of A-line high-necked smock-type toppers with kimono sleeves and turned back cuffs in luxurious fabrications. She often pairs these arty jackets with slim cut brocade trousers and extremely dramatic shoes. So it was fun to see the designer’s interpretation of this style of jacket and cigarette pant on the runway.

Iris’s style is also very texture rich. Feathers often feature in her outfits as a trim as do fabrics like organza, embossed leather and crushed velvet. Mastroianni used these signature Iris looks in her collection and the result was effective.

My favourite outfit of the range was a pair of bright red, slim cut brocade trousers matched with a halter neck tunic. I’m really enjoying the idea of wearing a bright colour from head to toe instead of breaking it up with a neutral or alternative colour. I have a yearning for a brightly coloured trouser suit.

What also struck me about the collection was Mastroianni’s accessory-free approach to her outfits. Iris Apfel wears many, many accessories at once. Lots of colourful layered necklaces, bangles and cocktail rings, along with her gigantic geek chic specs. Models sported a pair of dramatic gloves from time to time but that was it. I enjoyed the more refined and minimal approach of the collection.

The end of this show was very moving. One of the models was holding a Pomeranian as they all came back onto the catwalk for the finale. This may have been Iris’s little doggie, but I’m not sure. The audience applauded heavily as the models walked off the runway. Joanna Mastroianni walked on and headed straight for Iris in the front row. Iris stood up and with the help of a cane walked onto the catwalk with the designer. By this time the models and the cute Pomeranian had returned to the runway, and they backed Iris and the designer like a protective army. The whole audience was on their feet and photographers were going crazy as Mastroianni and Iris slowly walked arm in arm to the runway entrance, followed by their army of models. The whole sequence was accompanied by a roar of applause. I reached for my tissues.

Joanna Mastroianni’s Tribute to Iris Apfel

OMG, I have been fascinated by this total individualist for ages…talk about marching to the beat of your own drummer! Thanks for reminding us about her, Angie

Wow, I love this whole collection! That red jacket and the black dress with green scarf are my favorites! What a stylish lady–I hope to still be fashionable when I get to be 90! That collection is a touching tribute to an amazing style icon…thanks Angie and Greg for sharing the story and pics!

Angie, what a lovely write up for this show. I love the dramatic styles, textures and rich colors . The last sky blue gown is just stunning but the fur baby must have stolen the show. I love how this designers inspirational icon was made an intregal part of the show. Touching and so very meaningful.

Oh my! Such a fabulous idea, this tribute to a ‘vintage’ fashion-forward fashionista (is that too politically incorrect to say? it’s meant as a compliment!). Iris looks so stunning there — and most importantly, like she’s had fun putting on her clothes and big, big jewellery this morning. Such an inspiration, so humbling for those of us still struggling to ‘get it right and get it together’.

As for the collection, I love that shade of blue, that darling black dress right up top, and I’m going to go to sleep dreaming of kimono-sleeved leopard-print jackets with a flash of colour in the cuff!

What a gorgeous looking collection dedicated to a style icon! How wonderful for you and Greg to be a part of it! As usual Greg, your photos are amazing. I could see you rockin’ those red trousers Angie!

(Thanks, Shannon).

Manidipa, you hit the nail on the head. We can have fun with fashion and style at ANY age, and people like Iris remind us of that. Rock on, Iris!

That deep red leather trench coat is quite spectacular, isn’t it?

I love her style so much–who can rock an armful of bangles or a pair of statement specs better?–and this is such a moving, lovely tribute. I love the bright tomato red pieces. I think every fashion show should end with one or two adorable pups :) . Beautiful photos, as usual, Greg!

*swoon*

This is super duper awesome on every level!!

What an amazing show!!! I am nuts for Iris Apfel. Thanks for this report, Angie!

What a beautiful collection and a wonderful tribute! I can bearly contain my tears just reading about this amazing show.

I was hoping to convey some of the emotion that I felt during the show, modgrl :)

Jonesy, I also think that each collection should end with one or two pups!

Gorgeous collection, and so cool that it was inspired by Iris Apfel! Now here is someone who really has fun with fashion!

My favorite is the black and white outfit.

Gorgeous collection and touching tribute. I wish there was more appreciation for style as we age instead of always seeing style showcased on the younger population. The white dress with black details was my favorite of the collection.

What a gorgeous collection and what a beautiful moment you got to be a part of. I’m misty reading about it. :)

WOW! Love this collection! The colors, the textures, so rich and chic!

Wow – how inspiring! I had seen Iris in the Bill Cunnigham movie and been very curious about her. What a moving tribute. I love some of the outfits – the black and white gown and the gloves are my favorites – I could have those in my closet and on my body TODAY! Interestingly, I have recently been craving a bright yellow suit. Then talking myself down from it – of course assuming I would even find something like that.

I just read your post Angie and then noticed this at the web about another fashionista in her 90′s who was at this very show and what happened to hear afterwards. What a way to go!

What a memorable looking show! This definitely seems to encapsulate the flamboyance, artistry, and creativity of the fashion world. How wonderful to have such an unconventional and accomplished woman as muse, too!

Sihaya, we had heard that a lady in her 90s had fainted inside the venue after the show but nothing after that. How very tragic. May Zelda rest in peace.

Angie, what an inspired collection! Every piece is creative and wonderful. So many textures and colors and details….very organic and natural looking. It reminds me of the variety in nature and how it all works together somehow. I expecially like the black and green dress with the feathers and the black/grey/white dress next to it.

Iris was certainly a worthwhile muse!

I love the A-line smock and cigarette pant.

But so… where do New Yorkers get those big round glasses?

Fashion is ageless as is the love of fashion and this tribute to Iris Apfel is touching. You have a very caring and sensitive heart, Angie, and I always feel gratitude when you recognize and honor women of all ages. Thank you.

The copper and metallic fashions were interesting and eye-catching. As for a bright monochromatic suit, I know you can wear it beautifully when you find that special one.

What a fabulous show! And how great that Iris Apfel was the inspiration. Love the metallics (especially the copper) and the kimono toppers over cigarette pants.

A Pomeranian won “best in show” this week at the Westminster dog show…do you think the Pom at the end was a nod to that? :)

A few years ago Peabody-Essex Museum had a huge exhibit on Iris and a sizeable sampling of her wardrobe, which is how I first heard of her. She has always been on the cutting edge (as a teenaged girl, she had to beg someone to sell her a pair of denim jeans–at that time only male laborers were wearing them!). She is really a blaze of color, a connoisseur of world style and unforgettable combinations–what a unique spirit!

Swooning – what a gorgeous collection. I’m loving all of it – especially the little doggy!

What a gorgeous collection. Loved the story behind it too.

This is stellar, both for the fab clothing and the equally fab inspiration behind them. Another big thumbs up!

Wow!! For you and Greg to actually see this unfold would have made the entire nyfw well worth it!! The collection is beautiful and I love how the models hair all look so neat and ladylike ! This is just fabulous all round!! Being a part of something this big would be amazing!!!

Was this the show she died at?!

Shelby, Iris Apfel did not pass away at this show. Tragically, someone else did and Sihaya linked to an article that clarifies the story further up in the comments section. I believe the lady’s name was Zelda. Our condolences to her family.

Vicki and Taylor, thanks for your extra touching comments.

How wonderful for Iris Apfel to have inspired this collection. I love your coverage of the show, Angie, and Greg’s photography is superb. My word, I would have been so starstruck had I been there!

I adore the red trench, and I’d wear that blue glown on stage in a heartbeat (with an, ahem, mild alteration to the bodice). The collections seem very ladylike this year, which gets a huge thumbs up from me!

I love the fabrics, textures and embellishments! So gorgeous. I’m particularly mesmerized by the blonde model’s short hair. Very cute!

Such interesting pieces! I love the red coat, and boy would I ever like to wear that white & black gown!

Wow! I love this collection!!!!

Iris is so inspirational! She seems to have no fear and is living every moment embracing her own unique style. What a great tribute to a deserving muse!

Wonderful coverage of the tribute show. I also find Iris incredibly inspirational. My favorite piece here is the animal print smock in the second row. I also love the texture of the red trench next to it.

Taylor, the hair of the models was really pretty. This was also one of the few shows that showcased models with short hair.

I see that the black and white dress is a favourite.

If you have any more detail shots of the short-haired blonde in that stunning dress in the first picture, I would take them to my hairstylist next week and get that intriguing cut. It’s time to jazz it up a little.

This is purely brilliant! I love the designs…all very wearable and gorgeous. I also love the fact that is dedicated to an amazing woman. I need to read more about Iris Apfel!

Iris Apfel is such an icon. She inspires me to remember to have fun and go bold.

So many beautiful textures and colors here. I’m loving the shapes and colors in ALL of the pics. Every single outfit featured here is an inspiration and my eyes can’t stop feasting. I’m coming back again tomorrow. The metallic colors surprised me – I didn’t expect to like them so much I mean. Greg’s stunning pics may have something to do with it, too ;-)

Hee, count me as another fan of the blonde model’s short hair. I’m going to look for more pics.

You did a great job conveying the mood at the show, Angie. The last paragraph especially is very moving, too.

Rachylou, one place to look for dramatic (and round) sunglasses is Karen Walker. Killer sunglasses.

Such wonderful pictures of Iris and amazingly scrumptious fabrics. Gosh those jackets are divine.

How wonderful to make Iris Apfel a muse! and kudos to Joanna Mastroianni for leaving off all the heavy accessories. I want the red leather trench!!! I’d also wear those kimono toppers with slim pants.

Angie-
I have been searching for the designer of Iris’s trademark glasses. Her current collaboration with eyebobs are not as large as the frames she sports. Any ideas where she had them made or if they were made for her by another designer?

Lynn, I’m afraid I don’t know. Perhaps try the eyebobs specs anyway. They might look stunning despite the smaller size.
